  • ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ to Land on Disney+

    Preview:

    • Taylor Swift’s hugely successful ‘Eras Tour’ film is headed to Disney+.
    • It’ll include five songs not heard on previous versions.
    • The movie will start streaming exclusively on the service from next month.

It might not feature a 13 anywhere, but Taylor Swift has still found an impactful date for the news to break that her ‘Eras Tour’ concert film has found a new permanent home on streaming.

Actually, it’s more Disney’s schedule than Swift, since the entertainment behemoth used the day of its investors’ earning call to announce that ‘The Eras Tour’ will be streaming exclusively on Disney+ from next month.

Still, it marks the same day that Swift re-starts the tour, this time in Japan.

    What was The Eras Tour?

It’s more accurate to say, “what *is* The Eras Tour?” given that it’s continuing around the world.

After kicking off last year on March 17th in Glendale Arizona and taking in huge chunks of the States, the tour wrapped up its 2023 run in São Paulo, Brazil on November 26th.

According to data from live music trade publication Pollstar, the tour has become the highest-grossing concert tour in history, becoming the first ever to make $1 billion. So successful was it that it earned more than the next two-highest ranked tours of the time combined (that would be Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen).

The previous record holder was Elton John’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ tour, which took years to accomplish that. So it’s less “goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and more, “Goodbye Elton John”…

As for the movie, it has also been a big hit for Swift, earning $261.1 million worldwide since its release in theaters on October 13th last year. The singer-songwriter chose to bypass the studios for the theatrical release, striking a deal with theatre chain AMC that saw her pocket more of the profit.

What will be new for the Disney+ release of ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’?

The new, Disney+ cut of the movie will feature five songs that didn’t show up in either the theatrical or video on demand release. We already know that “Cardigan” is one of them, but all involved are staying quiet as to the others.

It’ll likely prove a boost for Disney’s streaming service, which saw a 1.3 million subscriber loss after it raised prices in the last year.

Here’s what Disney boss Bob Iger had to say about the new release:

“‘The Eras Tour’ has been a true phenomenon that has and continues to thrill fans around the world, and we are very excited to bring this electrifying concert to audiences wherever they are, exclusively on Disney+.”

When will ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ land on Disney+

Swifties (and anyone else who is interested) will be able to see the movie on Disney+ from March 15th.

  • Beyoncé to Release ‘Renaissance’ Concert Film

If there’s one person who could claim as much cultural impact via their music and their life as Taylor Swift at the moment, it’s Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

So, somewhat naturally after having seen the success that Swift is enjoying with her ‘Eras Tour’ concert film even before it hits theaters, Beyoncé is readying ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’, a concert film based on her ‘Renaissance’ tour, and is taking on the same deal with AMC that Swift received.

To give her credit, however, this is something that Beyoncé, who has a history of impressive concert films, has been cooking up for a while –– it’s the distribution plan that’s new.

    What is the Renaissance Tour?

‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 1st.

The Renaissance World Tour is the ninth concert tour by Beyoncé. Her highest grossing tour to date, it was announced on February 1, 2023, in support of her seventh studio album, ‘Renaissance’.

The all-stadium concert run began on May 10, 2023, in Stockholm, Sweden, and has just concluded this weekend in Kansas City, Missouri.

The concert lasts between two and a half and three hours and is split into six or seven acts, with Beyoncé performing the tracks of ‘Renaissance’ in order, interspersed with songs from across her discography (much like Taylor’s tour). The stage consists of a giant screen with a large “portal” in its center, and features sculptures, robotic arms and ultraviolet technology.

The tour broke ticket sales records worldwide and became the highest grossing tour ever by a female artist, achieving the two highest monthly tour-grosses in history.

Primarily filmed at Beyoncé’s Houston hometown, ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ will also feature highlights of the tour and, in true Beyoncé, snippets of more personal footage, including time with her family.

“When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” Beyoncé says in the trailer over a montage of images from the road. “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free, and no one is judged.”

As with the Eras Tour, ‘Renaissance’ was offered up on auction to studios and streamers but has ended up striking a deal with cinema chain AMC.

It’s something of a win-win for Beyoncé and the company, since the singer self-financed the film and will receive 50% of the worldwide profits when the movie is released.

‘Renaissance’ is currently lining up a December 1st release in theaters. Right now, its main competition is Jeff Nichols’ ‘The Bikeriders’ and the first film in years from John Woo, ‘Silent Night’. We’d be shocked if they didn’t move off the spot the same way ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ blinked when faced with the power of Swift.

The experience will air Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, for a minimum of four weeks, with multiple showtimes programmed throughout the day. Tickets in the US for all standard showtimes will start at $22 plus tax; ‘Renaissance’ will also be available in IMAX at AMC and Dolby Cinema at AMC, and other branded premium large format screens.

You can buy tickets from today at AMC’s site and globally from its sister companies.

Watch the trailer for Beyoncé’s latest film ‘Black Is King’

Disney+ just released a new trailer for Beyoncé’s upcoming film ‘Black Is King,’ which will be available on the streaming service on July 31. This new film (also called a “visual album”) is based on last year’s album “The Lion King: The Gift,” a studio album curated by Beyoncé that was inspired by music from the 2019 film. The album featured appearances from her husband Jay-Z, daughter Blue Ivy Carter, as well as guest spots from Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and Pharrell Williams, among others.

Jay-Z and Williams will appear in this upcoming film, as will some other big stars, such as Naomi Campbell and Lupita Nyong’o.

The new movie will update the 2019 version of ‘The Lion King’ for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns,” according to the official synopsis.

‘Black Is King’ will be available on Disney+ on July 31.

Can you feel the love tonight (and all nights and days) for Beyoncé? Yes, from the rapturous reception the superstar singer got for the music video for her new “Lion King” original song, “Spirit.”

The video, which debuted during an ABC primetime special Tuesday night, features stunning visuals — and a buzzy cameo by Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy.

“Spirit” is the first track from the compilation album “The Lion King: The Gift,” which was produced and curated by Beyoncé. It features songs by Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Pharrell, and more, and will be released Friday, July 19.

“Each song was written to reflect the film’s storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery, while listening to a new contemporary interpretation,” Beyoncé said in a statement about the album.

As for “Spirit,” Beyoncé wrote and produced the song along with IIya Salmanzadeh and Timothy McKenzie.

All hail Queen Bey, Grammy winner … and maybe future Oscar winner?

Beyoncé not only is starring in Disney’s upcoming remake of “The Lion King” as Nala, she created a new song for the movie.

Last night, the singer/actress release that song, “Spirit.” And that’s not all! It is the first single from a new album, “The Lion King: The Gift,” which will drop alongside the movie next week.

(This album is separate from the film soundtrack.)

The album was produced and curated by Beyoncé, who said in a statement: “Each song was written to reflect the film’s storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery, while listening to a new contemporary interpretation.”

As for “Spirit,” Beyoncé wrote and produced the song along with IIya Salmanzadeh and Timothy McKenzie. It carries both melodic and lyrical themes from the original 1994 movie, including talking winds, gathering stars and opening heavens.

It’s only July and the Best Original Song Oscar race may already be in the bag.

“The Lion King” — which is already receiving rave reviews — opens July 19.

Disney fans have already seen the impressive trailers, heard some of the soaring songs, and geeked out over the A-list cast of the upcoming live-action remake of “The Lion King.” And now, audiences can ogle some gorgeous new character portraits from the film, featuring the stars alongside their onscreen animated alter egos.

Director Jon Favreau shared the images on social media on Tuesday, with the photos serving as yet another reminder of both the flick’s beautiful animation, as well as its insanely famous ensemble.

The featured actors and their characters are: Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala; Donald Glover as Simba; Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Oliver as Pumbaa, Timon, and Zazu; Alfre Woodard as Sarabi; Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar; Keegan-Michael Key, Florence Kasumba, and Eric André as Kamari, Shenzi, and Azizi; and JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph as Young Simba and Young Nala. (Curiously, only James Earl Jones, who’s reprising his role as Mufasa, is missing from the lineup.)

Favreau led off his post with the Beyoncé portrait, and it’s not hard to see why: Queen Bey looks positively regal as the lioness; as her own self, she’s even more resplendent.

  • ‘Lion King’ Soundtrack Revealed, With Two New Surprises

‘Lion King’ Soundtrack Revealed, With Two New Surprises

    Disney

With the upcoming “Lion King” remake just weeks away from opening, Disney is further stoking anticipation by unveiling the soundtrack listing.

The original animated classic boasted some of the most memorable movie musical tunes of all time, including several songs written by Elton John, like “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” That song will now be remade with stars Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter in the roles of Simba and Nala.

The new soundtrack — which drops July 11 — features a new original song by Elton John and Tim Rice, titled “Never Too Late.” Since John performs it himself, it seems likely it will play over the end credits and vie for the Best Original Song Oscar.

There is also mystery around Track 14, which simply reads “TBA.” There was a rumor that Beyonce would since “Shadowland,” a soaring anthem sung by Nala in the Broadway version of “The Lion King.”

Director Jon Favreau told Fandango, “There’s a song that [Beyonce] performed and wrote in the spirit of the production along with working with Lebo M., who’s part of it with Hans Zimmer. They were all collaborating with her and helping to bring this new piece of music into a film where there’s already a very established musical personality to the piece.”

Here’s the full track list for “The Lion King.” The movie opens in theaters July 19.

Hear Beyoncé as Nala in New ‘Lion King’ Teaser

    Disney

Queen Bey is set to become Queen Nala in the upcoming remake of Disney animated classic “The Lion King,” and now, audiences have their first clear look — and listen — at the superstar in action.

A new teaser for the flick, released this week, features the first extended footage of Beyoncé (billed as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter) playing the role of Nala, the fierce lioness who was once Simba’s (Donald Glover) childhood BFF. While other clips and trailers have shown snippets of the character, this is the first time we hear her speak — and Bey is, in a word, flawless.

Beyoncé’s commanding delivery is a natural fit with Nala’s impassioned plea for Simba to return to Pride Rock, and “take [his] place as king.” By the time the clip ends with her imploring Simba to “come home,” you’ll be ready to get in formation with her, too.

The rest of the teaser offers another look at Billy Eichner‘s Timon and Seth Rogen‘s Pumbaa (who also seem perfectly cast in the roles), as well as a glimpse of Simba’s climactic showdown with Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor). We seriously can’t wait to see this entire movie.

“The Lion King” roars into theaters on July 19.

    All hail the new king.

Disney released a new, full-length trailer for its “live action” remake of “The Lion King.” It shows off more of the incredible photorealistic CGI that director Jon Favreau uses to update the 1994 classic.

The trailer’s footage confirms that the new version will recreate scenes from the original, including the Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Simba (Donald Glover) surveying their savannah kingdom; the stampede engineer by scheming Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor); and Simba embarking on his coming-of-age journey.

We also get a glimpse of Nala (Beyoncé) and even hear Pumbaa the warthog (Seth Rogen) and meerkat Timon (Billy Eichner) starting to sing the “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

“The Lion King” opens in theaters July 19.
