Coming to theaters on April 1, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘ is a follow-up to the box office hit, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘, and is based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel. The film features the returning voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach.

Mario and Luigi are back with a few new friends in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. It doesn’t take long to realize that this sequel is even better than the first movie, which felt like more of a set-up than anything else. There are infinite worlds and characters to explore now, and with the addition of fan favorites Rosalina, Yoshi, and Bowser Jr., things have been leveled up.

Everything seems better this time around, which isn’t to say ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ wasn’t good, because it was, but this time Illumination knows what they are doing and they lean into it. Now that viewers know these characters, they can deliver more action, funnier jokes, and a lot of Easter Eggs that fans will love to point out.

    Story and Direction

Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

When it comes to the story, admittedly, there is not much of one. It is a fairly simple premise, much like the video games. A princess is kidnapped. Chaos ensues. Said princess is rescued. Illumination knows how to keep viewers entertained throughout the film, however, thanks to gorgeous animation, Nintendo Easter Egg cameos and references, and a whole lot of action.

(L to R) Bowser Junior and Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Thanks to those action sequences, the movie moves very quickly. It never takes a breather or slows down, which makes it the perfect film to take kids to. It is funny and sharp witted, as nearly every joke lands. The story itself is geared towards a younger audience, but gamer parents will be thrilled with all of the references that are packed into it.

    Cast and Performances

(Center) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Just as with the first film, the cast never feels as if they are doing impressions of the video game characters. They make them their own, which is what helps this movie to work as well as it does. If that was not the case, the voices would get old very quickly, and it would distract from the story and action.

(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

The new cast members stick to this as well. Honestly, because of all the action and chaos happening, there is not a whole lot of dialogue, and when there is, it is pretty basic. Still, the cast all does a great job making these characters lovable and entertaining for kids and adults alike.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Luigi (Charlie Day) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

There was never a question as to whether or not ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ would end up getting a sequel, and the same is true about a third movie in the trilogy. Considering ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ not only sets up for more surprises in the end-credit scenes, but is also more entertaining than its predecessor, we shouldn’t have long to wait for the next movie to be announced.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ recieves a score of 78 out of 100.

  • Movie Review: ‘Marty Supreme’

In theaters on December 25 from A24 is ‘Marty Supreme,’ the latest film from director Josh Safdie and loosely inspired by real-life ping pong players who struggled with their own ambition and their sport’s viability in the 1950s.

    RwNquYXbAGoW8nTlpSIS17

The movie stars Timothée Chalamet (‘Dune: Part Two’), Gwyneth Paltrow (‘Shakespeare in Love’), Odessa A’zion (‘Fam’), Kevin O’Leary (‘Shark Tank’) and Fran Drescher (‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’).

Since deciding to go their separate ways after making the likes of stress-inducing dramas ‘Good Time’ and ‘Uncut Gems,’ who can say they expected the Safdie siblings to both put out sports-connected dramas months apart?

On the heels of Benny Safdie’s bio-drama ‘The Smashing Machine,’ here comes brother Josh’s ‘Marty Supreme’ which is more of a fictional screwball effort, albeit inspired by real-world ping pong players. But can it find more of an audience than ‘Smashing,’ which has struggled to connect?

Safdie, working with longtime collaborator Ronald Bronstein (‘Daddy Longlegs’) here brings a similar level of intensity to his latest, albeit the hysteria even further cut with comedy. It’s certainly made for a watchable movie full of great lines and outrageous moments, though it really will ignite debate over the central character, who is clearly talented but also treats people like dirt on his way to find sporting glory.

Safdie continues his ability to find interesting people to cast in both lead and minor roles and he imbues the whole affair with real energy.

Chalamet is the big draw here, and he’s all quirky power charisma and greed, and manages to make you root for Marty even when he’s being an absolute monster to those he claims to love and beyond.

But there are also great performances littering the film, including Gwyneth Paltrow as a former movie star grasping back towards success, ‘Shark Tank’ veteran Kevin O’Leary as an odious business type who spots an opportunity in Marty.

    Final Thoughts

‘Marty Supreme’s rhythms (and indeed its main character’s behavior) definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste. But it’s still a fascinating look at someone who puts their own needs over everyone else’s until they can’t.

    • Taylor Swift’s ‘The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ topped the box office.
    • The album release party movie earned $33 million.
    • MMA biopic ‘The Smashing Machine’ was third.

Taylor Swift has proved once again that she has the power. Even though her latest cinematic offering, ‘The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ isn’t a concert film like ‘The Eras Tour’ a couple of years ago, fans flocked to see it on release this weekend.

It’s even more impressive when you consider that Swift dropped word of it around two weeks ago via her (albeit mighty) social channels and there has been little other promotion beyond backers AMC Theaters, who scored another exclusive deal with the singer.

‘Showgirl,’ an 89-minute listening party that offers fans a look at a new music video and behind-the-scenes footage for her 12th studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ took in an impressive $33 million this weekend on a three-day limited run. And with Swift bypassing studios, she and AMC enjoy a bigger cut of any profits.

Internationally, the new Swift release earned $13 million, for a $46 million global haul so far. As mentioned, it won’t be sticking around theaters (we’re sure studios and filmmakers will breathe a sigh of relief) and will likely now head to home entertainment channels.

It’s all in support of her latest album, which itself has been breaking records itself despite some mixed reviews.

Here’s AMC’s CEO Adam Aron in a statement about the latest Swift cinema release:

“On behalf of AMC Theatres and the entire theatrical exhibition industry, I extend our sincerest appreciation to the iconic Taylor Swift for bringing her brilliance and magic to movie theatres this weekend. Her vision to add a cinematic element to her incredible album debut was nothing less than a triumph.”

There was bad news for Dwayne Johnson, whose much-hyped A24 title, ‘The Smashing Machine,’ failed to make much of an impact. Directed by Benny Safdie and co-starring Emily Blunt, it follows a chunk of the life of 1990s MMA fighter Mark Kerr.

The movie, which cost $50 million to produce (and more to market), earned a disappointing third place launch. A24 will likely still be pinning its hopes on this one being an awards contender, and it remains to be seen whether the lackluster financial performance hurts those chances.

Second place went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another,’ the anarchic comedic action epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. With $41 million earned to date in the US, it is now PTA’s most successful movie, but with a $130 million-plus price tag, faces a steep climb to breaking even.

Fourth was ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’, the movie adaptation of the kids’ show sinking further. And fifth was horror sequel ‘The Conjuring: The Last Rites’.

    Initial Thoughts

Not nearly as pleasurably anxiety-inducing as his previous films with brother Josh, Benny Safdie’s solo directing debut finds the filmmaker enabling star Dwayne Johnson’s push into the realm of ‘serious actor’ – and on that level, ‘The Smashing Machine’ is a success. The Rock rises to the occasion here with his measured, compelling, and complex portrayal of real-life UFC fighter Mark Kerr, showing vulnerability and humanity that he has largely not explored in his action-heavy resume to date.

As a film overall, ‘The Smashing Machine’ – based extensively on the 2002 HBO documentary of the same name – is less effective. It lacks context for Kerr’s story, which may leave viewers not familiar with the UFC or MMA bewildered, and it’s episodic in nature, weaving the highs and lows of Kerr’s career from 1997 to 2000 around his fraught, co-dependent relationship with girlfriend (and eventual wife, then ex-wife) Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt). Take away Johnson’s absorbing performance, and it’s a standard sports biopic with a weirdly muted energy.

    Story and Direction

(L to R) Director Benny Safdie and Dwayne Johnson and on the set of 'The Smashing Machine'. Photo: A24.
(L to R) Director Benny Safdie and Dwayne Johnson and on the set of ‘The Smashing Machine’. Photo: A24.

Safdie seems to take a lot of incidents and even lines of dialogue from ‘The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr,’ the HBO documentary, and his tendency to film in a cinema-verité style brings this film even closer aesthetically to the 2002 doc. The main difference, of course, is that this version features Dwayne Johnson as Kerr, and while we don’t get a lot of backstory on either him or his chosen field, we are nevertheless drawn into his struggle.

Kerr fights on several fronts even when he’s not in the ring. He’s a soft-spoken, gentle, kind man with a vulnerable center – he won’t even go on certain amusement park rides because they’ll hurt his ‘tummy’ – yet he’s also possessed of a deep inner rage that will explode out of nowhere and result in a bedroom door smashed to splinters on the floor. He doesn’t know how to handle defeat because he’s ‘never lost,’ even saying so in an interview before a match in Japan (where he frequently fought). Yet this is also a man who grudgingly realizes that he can’t win all the time, a realization borne out in the film’s final scenes.

Opioids and Dawn are what Kerr battles the most, the former for the pain and wear of his profession and the latter for the pain and wear of co-dependency. In several instances, Dawn comes out into their living room to find him sitting in a stupor, staring at the TV. She’s no angel herself when it comes to substances, with Kerr stunned late in the film when she refuses to stay away from the goodies herself in support of his emergence from rehab. ‘You’re no fun anymore!’ she shrieks at him with almost deliberate cruelty, despite Kerr’s earlier descent into addiction being nothing less than harrowing.

(L to R) Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson and director Benny Safdie on the set of 'The Smashing Machine'. Photo: A24.
(L to R) Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson and director Benny Safdie on the set of ‘The Smashing Machine’. Photo: A24.

The brawls inside the ring are less emotionally fraught but more physically brutal. Boxing may be the ‘sweet science,’ but UFC fighting is frankly nothing less than barbaric. Yet the fighters themselves are respectful to each other outside the ring, even friends, which provides its own touching moments.

Safdie shoots all this, as mentioned earlier, in a somewhat detached documentary style, but the compilation of incidents from Kerr’s life and career never take on an organic momentum of their own. That may be Safdie in part trying to avoid the usual rise-fall-return of most sports biopics (and biopics in general), which is commendable. But he still can’t avoid a number of the tropes and the film almost fights itself, trying to show a documentary restraint yet not quite reaching any real emotional heights – except in Johnson’s raw performance.

    Cast and Performances

(L to R) Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in 'The Smashing Machine'. Photo: A24.
(L to R) Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in ‘The Smashing Machine’. Photo: A24.

‘Raw’ is really the right word for Dwayne Johnson’s performance (which does bring to mind the Safdies’ reinvention of Adam Sandler in ‘Uncut Gems’), and fans may be unnerved to see him sobbing at several points in the film. Wearing prosthetics to bury himself more in the role, Johnson visibly digs deep and delivers, even if the viewer is aware that he’s also thinking about his award-season run.

Emily Blunt’s Dawn Staples is a problematic and not especially sympathetic character; while Blunt throws herself into the part (their biggest fight, climaxing in a bathroom, is intense and even frightening), the character is difficult because she’s either subservient to Kerr or selfishly manipulative toward him. Dawn is both exasperating and the typical ‘girlfriend/wife’ we see in sports biopics, but the movie never quite burrows under her skin.

Much of the rest of the film – in keeping with Safdie’s seeming desire to replicate as much of the documentary as possible – is cast with real people from the world of MMA and UFC playing either themselves or fictionalized versions of other real people. Ryan Bader in particular is quite good as Kerr’s former friend Mark Coleman, bringing sensitivity, decency, and honesty to a character whose loyalty Kerr constantly tests.

    Final Thoughts

As we said at the top of this review, the main focus of ‘The Smashing Machine’ – Dwayne Johnson’s transformative performance – is what works best. Which is a good thing, both for him and the movie, although no doubt debates will rage over whether this is a shameless bid for awards recognition from an actor whose chops – like those of fellow wrestlers-turned-actors John Cena and Dave Bautista – have not always been taken seriously.

Still, Johnson does step up, although in the end ‘The Smashing Machine’ itself is serviceable, occasionally fascinating, and intermittently moving. We’re not sure what the film says in the end: Mark Kerr was a UFC and MMA pioneer before they became cultural behemoths, and in a sense he was passed by as a result. But since that has been chronicled already in a documentary, does a narrative version have a point? That’s the barrier ‘The Smashing Machine’ struggles to break through.

‘The Smashing Machine’ receives a score of 75 out of 100.

Pinkwater’s book is the story of a boy who is left to his own devices. When he stumbles upon a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music, a hidden door to the extraordinary swings open. His search for answers leads him to the eccentric and whimsical Chicken Man and his beloved companion, a 70-year-old chicken named Claudia — two kindred spirits who have also glimpsed the impossible.

Safdie aims to write the adaptation and direct, while Johnson would look to stretch himself once more to play to play Chicken Man. The pair will also produce the movie.

The next step is to find a distributor for the film, which certainly sounds like it could be a tough sell –– but ‘The Smashing Machine’ is certainly generating hefty positive buzz and we’d be surprised if the duo hasn’t already started discussions with that movie’s backers, A24.

When will ‘Lizard Music’ be in theaters?

With no distribution deal yet, there isn’t a release date to relate as of now.

‘Happy Gilmore 2’, the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1996 Adam Sandler film is a funny and satisfying follow up for fans, although it does rely heavy on nostalgia for the original. Sandler successfully returns to one of his most iconic roles, and while the character has grown since the first film, he’s still as funny and unpredictable as ever.

Christopher McDonald also triumphantly returns as Happy’s rival, Shooter McGavin, and his onscreen chemistry with Sandler is one of the highlights of the movie. The story is strong and mostly works but takes a little time to get going and drags a bit in the third act, and when focusing too much on subplots that don’t affect the main story. But fans of the original or Sandler’s work in general will be very “Happy” with the new sequel for the most part.

    Story and Direction

The film begins by catching us up on Happy Gilmore’s (Adam Sandler) life since the original movie, and we learn that he went on to win the PGA tour, marry Virginia (Julie Bowen), have five children, and become a golf legend. But after Happy experiences a personal tragedy in his own life, he loses his grandmother’s house, turns to alcohol, quits golf forever, and must raise his children on his own.

Now, 30 years later, his four sons are all grown up (and have their father’s anger issues), and Happy is living with his teenage daughter Vienna (Sunny Sandler), who wants to go to an expensive dance school in Paris that he can’t afford. Gilmore is soon approached by a billionaire (Benny Safdie) who wants to start an extreme golfing league to rival the PGA and wants to recruit Happy. While Happy refuses, it does inspire him to return to professional golfing, but he soon finds that he is a bit rusty on the course.

Eventually, along with his new caddy Oscar (Bad Bunny), Happy joins a tournament between the PGA and the extreme golfing league, where the losing league will be disbanded forever. To make matters worse, while Happy is dealing with his own alcoholism and his new extreme golfing rival played by Haley Joel Osment, his old rival, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) returns from a long time away and wants his revenge. Now, Happy must fight his own demons, new rivals and old, and win the tournament to save golf and earn enough money to get his grandmother’s house back and send his daughter to dance school.

The script by Tim Herlihy and Sandler works exceedingly well, even though it relies heavily on nostalgia for the first movie. The script allows a lot of growth for the title character, while never losing the anger and intensity Happy had in the original. This is an older and slightly wiser version of the character, and it fits Sandler well. The rival extreme golf league plot was very clever, even if it loses its some of its steam towards the end, but the sub-plot featuring Ben Stiller didn’t work for me at all.

Kyle Newcheck who worked with Sandler on ‘Murder Mystery’ takes over director duties from Dennis Dugan, who still returns as Doug Thompson from the first movie. Newcheck does a very good job with the pacing, direction and style of the movie. While it does feel like a proper sequel, it also has a very modern vibe with great music that works well in 2025.

There are many great cameos and Easter eggs from the first movie, and they all work, even if Newcheck might go to the well one too many times. The director also gets very good performances out of non-actors like golfers John Daly and Rory McIlroy, Football player Travis Kelce, and sportscaster Stephen A. Smith, and even incorporates social media personalities like Alix Earle.

    Cast and Performances

In recent years Adam Sandler has given some very good dramatic performances in films like ‘Uncut Gems’, ‘Hustle’, and ‘Spaceman’, but returns to comedic form in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’. In fact, I would go as far to say that Sandler’s dramatic work has made his comedic skills even stronger. Sandler is terrific as the older, down on his luck Happy, and is very believable in both the comedic and dramatic moments of the film.

But it wouldn’t be a “Happy Gilmore’ movie without Shooter McGavin played by the great Christopher McDonald. This is easily the actor’s signature role, and he is a force of nature in this sequel. He has fantastic chemistry with Sandler and seeing them together is one of the strongest elements of the film. I won’t say too much about his storyline, but it is very believable to the character from the first film and very funny.

Julie Bowen also returns as Happy’s now wife Virginia, and without revealing spoilers, I’ll just say that it’s unfortunate that the way the storyline unfolds that it does not give the actress more to do. Ben Stiller also returns as Hal L. and has a bigger role than in the first film. But his character is not my favorite, and I found his story arc to be unnecessary.

Joining the cast is musician Bad Bunny, who gives a shockingly funny performance as Happy’s new caddy Oscar and has a very relaxed and fun chemistry with Sandler. Actress Sunny Sandler, Adam’s daughter, also joins the cast as Happy’s daughter, Vienna, and gives a sweet and emotional performance.

Finally, I was very impressed with the performances from non-actors like golfer John Daly, who plays a version of himself living in Happy’s garage. There are also a few unforgettable cameos, which we won’t spoil here.

    Final Thoughts

As far as legacy sequels go, especially with comedies, ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is a very funny and compelling film. Adam Sandler brings energy, passion, emotion and a lot of humor to his character, and Christopher McDonald is fantastic as Shooter, and it’s a joy to see the two actors together again. While the movie does lean heavy on your nostalgia for the original, it still feels fresh and like a reunion with some old friends.

    • Dwayne Johnson is taking a role in new thriller ‘Breakthrough.’
    • Zeke Goodman wrote the script about a potentially risky motivational guru.
    • A24 is backing the movie.

Dwayne Johnson has been through a few phases in his career. He kicked off with supporting, action-focused roles in the likes of ‘The Mummy Returns,’ moved through the kid-friendly likes of ‘Tooth Fairy’ and slowly built himself into a movie-opening, franchise-launching, big-name machine.

But more recently, he’s revisited his attempts to branch out from the usual ‘Fast & Furious’ and ‘Jumanji material. Back in the day, he tried to stretch himself in the likes of ‘Southland Tales,’ but he’s been aiming for more success with the upcoming MMA biopic ‘The Smashing Machine.’

And he’s clearly had a good time working with ‘Smashing Machine’ studio A24 as Deadline reports that Johnson is looking to get back in business with the company for new psychological thriller ‘Breakthrough.’ So interested is the actor, he’s jumping aboard to produce and play a supporting role rather than the lead.

The new script comes courtesy of up-and-coming talent Zeke Goodman.

Set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, the movie follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness.

Johnson will play the role of the guru, with casting still underway for the lead role and other characters.

Goodman’s CV includes acting work on series such as ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ ‘Cruel Intentions’ and ‘The Hunting Party.’ He’s also worked as a writer, director, producer and actor on a number of short films, and will be seen in upcoming mystery comedy movie ‘All That Glisters.’

A24 is financing the movie, while Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions will produce alongside Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions.

Johnson continues to be a filmmaking powerhouse, in addition to keeping on down the movie star route of heading up a number of other businesses (a sports gear line, a tequila brand and a male grooming products company among them).

He’s attached as a producer to a variety of projects and is still looking for lead roles that challenge him.

Earlier this year, he set up ‘Ripped,’ an adaptation of the short story by Joe Ballarini, at 20th Century Studios, with an eye to produce via Seven Bucks and potentially star. He’s also set to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt in an untitled Hawaiian crime pic to be directed by Martin Scorsese.

On the bigger scale front, he’s still attached to the franchise-extending likes of the  ‘Jungle Cruise’ sequel, ‘Fast X: Part 2,’ and Disney’s live-action version of ‘Moana,’ in which he reprises the role of Maui that he voiced in the animated original.

That movie will be on screen July 10th next year.

And, of course, up next for the actor is the aforementioned ‘Smashing Machine,’ a biopic of fighter Mark Kerr, which is being seen a possible awards contender from director Benny Safdie, slated for release October 3rd.

When will ‘Breakthrough’ be on screens?

While the movie is listed as in pre-production, the fact that there’s no director on board yet, not to mention Johnson’s busy schedule, means we could be waiting a while for this –– unless the actor manages to squeeze it in among other gigs (and his many, many workouts).

Right now, A24 does not have a release date on the books.

Happy Gilmore (Sandler) has long aspired to be a hockey player. Despite a powerful slapshot, Happy’s inability to skate and his volatile behavior excludes him from being accepted by any hockey team. Furthermore, Happy’s grandma is being evicted from her home after failing to pay her taxes.

After playing with some golf clubs and learning he can shoot golf balls far distances, he decides to join the PGA Tour in an effort to win money to buy back his grandmother’s home. Happy’s bad-boy image attracts a loyal following, but also attracts the attention of Shooter McGavin, the favorite to win the PGA Tour who is worried that Happy’s rise to stardom will undermine his shot to win.

Along the way, he’s helped by Carl Weathers’ one-armed mentor, Chubbs and trades blows with ‘The Price is Right’ host Bob Barker.

New this time are comedian Nick Swardson, filmmaker Benny Safdie (who has directed Sandler in the past), musician Bad Bunny, actor Margaret Qualley and NFL star Travis Kelce.

“The movie itself picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he’s different. He’s a bit of a mess. And then we try to get his life cooking again.”

Appearing on ‘The Tonight Show’, Sandler talked up the schedule for the new movie:

“We’re going to do ‘Happy Gilmore.’ This is happening. We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple weeks. It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.”

And thanks to efforts from Kelce himself (a dedicated fan of the original) and fans of the player, he’ll have a role.

Here’s what Sandler said on that front:

“Travis… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis. He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

As for Safdie, who has been known for a dual career directing movies alongside brother Josh (though they’re both currently focused on solo projects) and acting, he’ll also crop up, with Sandler telling Indiewire that he’ll “have a juicy part” in the movie.

Where else will we see Travis Kelce?

(L to R) Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Photo: Travis Kelce's Instagram Account.
(L to R) Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Photo: Travis Kelce’s Instagram Account.

Kelce has been busy trying to spin his NFL and Swift-adjacent celebrity into a showbiz career, even as he continues to see success on the field (his Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year).

He already has one established gig as the host of Prime Video’s ‘Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?’ quiz show and executive produced dark comedy ‘My Dead Friend Zoe,’ which premiered at SXSW and will be in theaters this coming November.

Now he’s expanding into acting roles. He has one in the can already, ‘Grotesquerie,’ the new horror drama from Ryan Murphy, which premieres on FX on September 25th.

The show focuses on a series of heinous crimes that have unsettled a small community and Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts), who feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone — or something — is taunting her.

Kelce’s role in that is as yet unknown.

But he’s also now looking to take a leading role, snagging the star part in a new action comedy that has some solid backing, according to reporter Jeff Sneider.

‘Loose Cannons’ is the latest production from ‘John Wick’ overseer Chad Stahelski. While he isn’t likely to direct it, the fact that his 87Eleven company is involved means the set pieces should at least be inventive and impressive.

And there’s also a Sandler connection to this one too, albeit a loose one: Timothy Dowling, who has worked with the comedy star on several movies, wrote the ‘Loose Canons’ script, which is being kept under wraps for now.

But if we were to shove our speculation hat on, that title could refer to wayward guns gone missing, or possibly an out-of-control law enforcement officer.

Whatever the story, it’s in development at Lionsgate, but will likely have to cool its heels until Kelce’s schedule opens back up; an expanded cameo in a Sandler film is one thing –– the Kansas City Chiefs are kicking off the 2024 NFL regular season on September 5th.
