  • BAFTA Nominees 2022 Announced

    As awards season trundles onwards, today was the turn of the BAFTAs to announce their nominations. And the likes of Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’, Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog’ and Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ all scored well.

    ‘Dune’ in particular seemed to be a favourite of the British academy’s voters, with 11 nominations in total (though in keeping with its other awards season appearances, more for film, craft, and Villeneuve than in any of the acting categories.

    Jane Campion’s ranch-set ‘The Power of the Dog, meanwhile, grabbed 8 nominations, and did show up in the acting section, with stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kodi Smit-McPhee popping up on more lists and co-star Jesse Plemons also making an appearance.

    On the performing front, Will Smith scored his first BAFTA nomination ever for ‘King Richard’, while ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’s Denzel Washington didn’t make the cut (Joel Coen’s film, in fact, only appears in one category – for Bruno Delbonnel’s memorable cinematography).

    There are other surprising omissions too – neither ‘The Lost Daughter’s Olivia Colman (a perennial BAFTA nominee) nor ‘Being the Ricardos’ Nicole Kidman made the Best Actress categories, while the biggest cold shoulder went to ‘Spencer’, which received nothing. It’s truly not a great sign for star Kristen Stewart’s Oscar chances, and perhaps represents some pushback from Brits against her portrayal of Princess Diana.

    It’s sad to see ‘Cyrano’ left out of acting consideration (though it is up for five trophies and reassuring to spot ‘Mass’ among the films nominated (even if it is just for Ann Dowd as a potential Best Supporting Actress).

    As to whether BAFTA nominees tell us much about who might be up for Oscars? It’s harder to pinpoint, though historically around two-thirds of BAFTA nominees go on to scoop corresponding Academy Award nominations. And, of course, there is a focus on British filmmaking talent.

    The BAFTA awards event will take place on Sunday, March 13 in London, at an event hosted by Rebel Wilson. Here is the full list of nominees:

  • 2022 SAG Awards Nominations Announced

    The 2022 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens via Instagram Live and there were many surprises.

    In the film categories, Oscar frontrunner ‘Power of the Dog’ tied ‘House of Gucci’ for the most nominations with three each, however it was surprisingly left off the list for Best Cast, which is basically SAG’s Best Picture category. On the other hand, ‘Gucci,’ which had essentially left the Oscar race till now with only Lady Gaga still in the hunt for Best Actress, has seen a resurrection of sorts with it’s Best Cast nomination and now has a better shot at multiple nominations at the Academy Awards. Rounding out the Best Cast category are ‘Don’t Look Up,’ ‘Belfast,’ ‘CODA’ and ‘King Richard.’

    Other surprises in the film categories include Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress, Kristen Stewart being left off of the list for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in ‘Spencer.’ As well as actor Peter Dinklage, who will likely be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Cyrano,’ but was unfortunately snubbed by his fellow actors.

    There were also some unexpected nominations, as Javier Bardem scored an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in ‘Being the Ricardos,’ and Jennifer Hudson was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in ‘Respect.’

    In the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category, both Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper managed to receive nominations for their work in ‘The Tender Bar’ and ‘Licorice Pizza,’ respectively, putting both actors squarely in the Oscar race. Likewise, Ruth Negga’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nomination for her work in ‘Passing,’ also makes her an Oscar contender.

    On the television side, nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series include ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘Yellowstone.’ Nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are ‘The Great,’ ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Kominsky Method,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ and ‘Ted Lasso.’

    As previously announced, receiving the Life Achievement Award at the 28th annual ceremony will be Oscar winning actress, Helen Mirren. Last year’s ceremony was held virtual due to the pandemic, but this year it will be live again from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, airing on TNT and TBS at 5pm PST on Sunday, February 27th.

    ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Begins Filming in Northern Ireland

    Fans who were unsatisfied with last month’s “Game of Thrones” series finale have a fresh opportunity to explore the world of Westeros, thanks to a new prequel series that’s been ordered to pilot at HBO. And now comes word that that episode has finally started filming, in a location that should look plenty familiar to “Thrones” devotees.

    According to Entertainment Weekly, the pilot for prequel “The Long Night” (the show’s current working title, which was also the name of an episode of the final season of “Thrones”) just began production in Northern Ireland. That’s the same country that served as home base for “Thrones” throughout the show’s entire eight-season run, and we can’t help but think that the creative team is planning on re-using some of the same locations for this new show.

    Of course, if that happens, the setting won’t look completely the same: “The Long Night” takes place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” in a version of Westeros that is “a different and older world,” according to “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin. And there’s still the possibility that the series could shoot in other countries, too, though that has not yet been confirmed yet, EW reports.

    “The Long Night,” created by Jane Goldman (“X-Men: First Class”) from a story by Martin, features headliner and Oscar nominee Naomi Watts, and a sprawling cast that includes Miranda Richardson in a key role, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.

    If ordered to series, the prequel is expected to debut on HBO sometime in late 2020 or early 2021. Stay tuned.
