While generational crime drama ‘Peaky Blinders’ wrapped up its TV run in 2022 and movie ‘The Immortal Man’ effectively closed out one part of the story, creator Steven Knight still has more stories to tell.
And now, via Netflix, we have the first look at one of the main cast members, Jamie Bell, who takes over the role of Duke Shelby (as played by Barry Keoghan in the last couple of seasons and the movie).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Tim Roth and screenwriter Steven Knight about their work on ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’, developing the screenplay for the movie, how Roth got involved with the project, his take on his character, working with Cillian Murphy, how Thomas Shelby has changes since the series, and why Knight wants to thank the fans for their devotion.

Moviefone: To begin with, Steven, can you talk about developing the screenplay and did you always know that this film would be how the ‘Peaky Blinders’ story would end?
Steven Knight: Yeah, the actual details of the story were not set, but I always wanted it to end in the Second World War, and for it to end as a film. In fact, somebody showed me a clip of an interview I did just after the end of the first series, when it was a little BBC Two thing. For some reason, I’m very arrogantly saying, “What I want to do is take this all the way to World War II and I want it to be a feature film.” I’m thinking, “What are you going on about?” But here we are.

MF: Tim, were you a fan of the TV series and what was your first reaction to the screenplay for the movie?
Tim Roth: I hadn’t watched the series at all. I’d worked with Cillian back in the day, and then I’d known him over the years, and we’d given him an award in Cannes and stuff like that. I mean, I was a fan and I loved him, but I hadn’t seen the show. I’d bumped into him when he was filming it over the years, because I’d be in Liverpool, or I’d been in Birmingham or whatever. There was a joy there. Also, the series had a reputation within the acting world of, “Oh, you want to work on that. It’s such fun. The characters are great to play,” and so on. So that happened. But what happened was I texted Cillian after he got his Oscar and told him, “Just keep your head down and run for the hills.” He said, “Doing it. Do you want to do a film?” That was how it happened. He did the same with Barry and I think he got Rebecca on. So, he’s causing some kind of furor in the casting world because he’s actually taking over as a casting director.
MF: What was your first reaction to your character? Did you understand his point of view right away?
TR: I thought he was brilliant. When he was written, he had a different twist to him. He was in the upper classes. I asked these guys if I could flip it and make him more of a normal guy, because I felt If he’s coming out from what seems like a much more normal and regular place, when the mask comes off, its more terrifying. Also, he needs to be able to communicate with Peaky Blinders and they wouldn’t talk to a toff. They wouldn’t talk to an upper-class snob.
MF: Steven, can you talk about how Thomas Shelby has changed since the series and what it was like working Cillian Murphy again?
SK: Always great to work with Cillian, because he’s not only just a brilliant actor, but he leads the line. He’s such a professional, all those things, et cetera, et cetera, but all true with him. I wanted the character to have done something, because Tommy Shelby’s done some bad things over the years, but I wanted to find him, and he’s done something that he cannot forgive himself for, and it’s to do with his family. That guilt is a new thing. Then, I wanted to offer him the opportunity of redemption, the opportunity to be forgiven for what he’s done by doing something good. It’s something good for his son, but it’s also something good for the country. Both acts, both things are done by the same action, which is how the film ends. When you’ve got actors like this that are so good, you can be quite bold in the scope of the emotional territory you’re going for.

MF: Tim, what was your experience like working with Steven and director Tom Harper on this project?
TR: They gave us the space, which is a rarity nowadays, especially. Usually, all screen time is taken up with people speaking, or the music, or both. Cillian was talking about this this morning. You never get moments of silence to play. It’s a very rare thing now. I mean, there’s a history of that in the show and in the film. It rears its head well. So, we could watch each other without it being cut. We could just take the time. I think that makes it more cinematic, and a more beautifully told story. I wish it was in the cinemas longer, I must say. But there’s a community out there and they got it now. So, they get paid back and it’s lovely.
MF: Finally, Steven, as you know, fans of the series are very excited for this movie to finally be released. Have you felt that fan anticipation since the series ended?
SK: I mean, the fans have been the engine of this whole thing. They’ve been the energy behind it. It was not massively publicized when it first started. It wasn’t promoted heavily. Fans found it. I think when people find something for themselves, it increases the loyalty to it and people get evangelical about it. They want other people to know how good it is. So that’s what happened with this. We really wanted the energy of the fans to not diminish. So, we knew there was a timescale to this. We wanted to get the film out there. But what I have noticed is there was a lot of anticipation, people who wanted it. But something new has happened. There’s an increasing amount of energy and fandom going on with the film. Like back home in England, you can’t get a ticket. It’s sold out everywhere and in Birmingham, there’s a cinema that’s doing four shows a day, starting at 8:00 AM, and you still can’t get a ticket. So, what we wanted to do from the very beginning was reward the fans with a film that’s in theaters where people can go and watch it together. They can dress accordingly if they wish but share the emotion at the end. That’s what’s happening, so there’s a new level now.

1) Cillian Murphy Says The Film Needed To Justify Itself If They Were Going To Make It

Fans are thrilled to see Tommy Shelby return to the screen, but star Cillian Murphy says he was not going to come back unless the movie was justified.
Cillian Murphy: The luxury of having played him for so long is that all the research is kind of done. You’ve got 13 years of it there. You’ve lived alongside him and you’ve aged alongside him. I’ll never experience that again; it’s really unique. But like the lads were saying, we wanted to make something that would justify its existence. The TV show was so successful and became deeper as it went, so the film needed to justify itself. When we figured out the thematic drive was “family”—a father and son story introducing Duke—we knew we were on the right track.

‘Peaky Blinders’ writer and producer admits that his plan was always to end with a movie, during this time period, telling this story.
Steven Knight: I’ve discovered recently that I did an interview after the first series where I said confidently, “We’re going to end this in the Second World War and it’s going to be a movie.” And here we are. I mean, it was very arrogant of me to imagine that would happen, but it’s happened. I always wanted to end it this way—always wanted to end it in Birmingham as the bombs drop. And I think that what we have done is ended this part of the story in a quite magnificent way.
3) Barry Keoghan Has Wanted To Be A Part Of ‘Peaky Blinders’ For Years
Actor Barry Keoghan joins the cast of ‘Peaky Blinders’ in this film, but this is something he has wanted for years.
Barry Keoghan: Yeah, it was mad. I remember the screen test, seeing Cillian as Tommy Shelby. It was the first time I’d seen him in person as Tommy Shelby, just looking at me. I was like, “Look at me, I’m new to this!” It’s iconic. I’ve wanted to be part of the TV show or movie for years. I’ve had the “haircut” for about 10 years in my personal life, and I get mistaken that I’m in it already! It’s ironic, isn’t it? But it’s such an honor. It is nerve-wracking and exciting, and there is this anticipation… you just hope you do well.
4) Tim Roth Did Not Watch ‘Peaky Blinders’ Before Filming ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’

Tim Roth also joins the cast in the new film, but he approached the role by purposefully not watching the series.
Tim Roth: When I was asked to do it, I hadn’t seen it, but I’d heard about it. I bumped into them when they were filming once and they looked like they were having a lot more fun than I was at the time! But I made the decision not to watch it before joining. I think I would have been more nervous if I’d seen it, to be honest. I came in completely fresh and you walk through this “family door.” More importantly to me, it felt like they were taking it seriously—what Tom and Steve were up to was making a real movie. Full on. The only green screen you saw was to keep the skyscrapers out of the background.
5) Rebecca Ferguson Was Drawn To This Film For Several Reasons

When asked what it was about ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ that pulled Rebecca Ferguson in, she admits it was not just one thing, but many.
Rebecca Ferguson: It’s never one thing. It’s how they all tie together. Steven’s script was so dynamic and challenging. Anything disruptive is interesting in an established environment. My character comes from the outside; she sounds different, she acts differently, but there is a thematic connection. She’s another hurdle for them.

Who is in the cast of ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’?
Ever since Tommy Shelby rode off into the sunset to start a new life in ‘Peaky Blinders‘ fans have been asking for more. This is certainly one of Cillian Murphy’s most memorable roles and so seeing him return to the franchise for one last hurrah is nothing short of exciting. With a title as well loved as this one, it was important for ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ to fit into this world and feel warranted, rather than a cash grab. Thankfully, from just the first few minutes, it was clear this film was made to complete the story – and it does just that.
Director Tom Harper worked on the first season of ‘Peaky Blinders’ so it was only fitting to see him return to direct ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’. He knew this world already, even if it had been a while since he was immersed in it, and he does a brilliant job weaving in new characters and celebrating the old ones.
Storywise, this movie is brilliant. Even though the series felt wrapped up enough, there were certainly some unanswered questions and longing to know what happened down the line for Tommy Shelby. ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ does a great job of not only providing these answers, but delivering an interesting, entertaining, and action-packed story. It is important to mention that the emotional moments are always allowed to breath. They are never overshadowed by the action.
Cillian Murphy was born to play Tommy Shelby. Fans of the series already know this but for those that were not convinced yet, ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ solidifies it. He is absolutely brilliant in this film. He knows this character inside and out, and is a natural on screen.
Barry Keoghan, who plays Tommy’s gypsy son Duke, is a great addition to this world. He is a talented actor who always gives one hundred and ten percent to his roles, and this is no exception. He fits into this world perfectly, and his scenes opposite Cillian Murphy ooze with chemistry. The two of them are brilliant together.
Then there is Rebecca Ferguson. Another fantastic actor who never phones in a performance. She also fits into this world well. We meet her early on and it is impossible not to relate to her from that very moment.
‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ is sure to make fans of the series very happy. It continues Tommy Shelby’s story, picking up a few years down the road from the series finale, in a way that, simpy put, just makes sense. Everything comes back around to the beginning, bringing this story full circle. It is well acted, well shot, and will have viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

‘Crime 101’ really wants to be Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ (and maybe some of his ‘Thief’ as well). Not that there’s anything wrong with that; epic crime thrillers are few and far between these days, and writer-director Bart Layton’s 140-minute L.A.-based drama has a lot of the scope and a glittering cast to make a run at it.
Based on gritty genre writer Don Winslow’s 2020 novella of the same name, ‘Crime 101’ doesn’t quite hit the heights of Mann’s 31-year-old masterpiece – it’s patterned almost too closely on that film’s narrative, for one thing, and it takes far too long to set itself up and finally get to the good stuff. But when it does work – thanks to some terrific work from some of that cast – ‘Crime 101’ can be suspenseful and absorbing.
Story and Direction

A mysterious man named Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is committing a series of flawlessly executed heists – mainly of precious jewels — up and down the length of California’s 101 freeway, from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. Careful not to harm a single person during his crimes, Davis is also lonely, isolated, and socially awkward, with his only goal to reach a certain sum of money and his past shrouded in shadows.
While most of the LAPD squad assigned to the robberies just wants to close them out, Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) sees a pattern in them and is convinced it’s one man, annoying his superiors. His investigation brings him into the orbit of Sharon Coombs (Halle Berry), a claims adjuster whose insurance firm handles the kind of high-end clients who are taking a hit from Davis’ heists.
When Davis targets another of Coombs’ clients for what he hopes is his final job, that puts Coombs on his radar as well – but unbeknownst to Davis, his own benefactor (Nick Nolte) has put a second operator on the job, a psychotic, violent man-child named Ormon (Barry Keoghan) who does not share Davis’ moral code or any hesitation to hurt and kill.

‘Crime 101,’ as with Winslow’s other works and the films that Layton emulates, walks the well-worn gray area of many a crime film where the lines between the criminals and the ‘good guys’ are often blurry and where thieves often have codes of honor that are tested to the breaking point by other forces. But a problem here that hampers ‘Crime 101’ is that it never creates a consistently rising sense of tension for a good portion of the film. Setup takes up a large chunk of its first half, and the narrative finds itself going down more than one blind alley.
There is more attention paid to character development, but only selectively, and often in ways that seem incongruous. But the movie does come to life in fits and starts, including a pulse-pounding car and motorcycle chase involving Davis and Ormon, some other scenes involving the latter, and almost all of the third act, as Davis, Lubesnick, Ormon and others are all drawn into Davis’ carefully calibrated plan. Layton also makes good use of real Los Angeles locations, from downtown to Malibu, effectively making the city very much a character itself, although Blanck Mass’ heavy-handed score, all synths and thunderous drums, works too hard to add extra gravitas.
Cast and Performances

Strangely enough, the weakest component of the all-star cast here may be its leading man. Hemsworth’s Davis is a curiously flat character – and while much of his background is intentionally left murky, there’s not enough for Hemsworth to work with, rendering him kind of a blank. Also unhelpful is his almost complete lack of chemistry with Berry and especially Monica Barbaro, who shows up in the Amy Brenneman role from ‘Heat’ – the love interest who changes the thief’s perspective – and brings her own considerable magnetism in spades, even in a typically underwritten and stock role.
Despite looking like he just came right from the ‘Task’ set to this film – his rumpled, exhausted cops are virtually indistinguishable – Mark Ruffalo brings his usual wounded dignity and innate decency to the role of Lou, who you can’t help but love thanks to his dogged determination and, uh, attempts at yoga (too bad Jennifer Jason Leigh is wasted completely and barely seen as his estranged wife).
The film’s MVPs, however, are Berry and Keoghan. The former is electric as a hard-working, quick-witted woman pushed to the brink by her obnoxious, sexist bosses, while the latter is genuinely frightening and unpredictable as the wild card psycho Ormon. Even though we’ve pretty much had enough Joker in recent Batman movies, Keoghan almost makes us want to see his cameoing Clown Prince of Crime from ‘The Batman’ show up again in Matt Reeves’ upcoming sequel.

Bart Layton definitely gets an ‘A’ for effort with ‘Crime 101’ – he really wants to make the kind of complex, morally ambivalent, tense, adult-oriented thriller that is harder to glimpse at the multiplex these days than an influencer staying off their phone for the entire length of a movie.
Yet Layton makes his melodrama almost too complicated; careful pruning of some subplots and sequences – he apparently likes one slowly rotating opening shot of the title motorway so much that he does it again later in the film – might have jacked up the pace and added more urgency to the proceedings. Still, while ‘Crime 101’ is not the epic crime drama the director-writer may have had in mind, it still manages to generate enough heat of its own to keep one interested.

As an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) mystifies police with a string of heists along the 101 freeway in Los Angeles, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. As the thief plans one final heist, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher for all three.

Moviefone: To begin with, Chris, what would you say to audiences sitting down right now in a theater to watch this movie to prepare them for the theatrical experiences they are about to have?
Chris Hemsworth: Propulsive. Sophisticated. Relevant. Thought provoking. There’s a beautiful momentum in the film, and continuity from the action and the intensity there through the dramatic scenes. I think we’ve, and (director) Bart Layton speaks of this a lot, prioritized the action as the most important, impressive part. But the action means nothing if you’re not invested in those characters. Every time we cut to an action scene, right before that, you’re invested in the emotional content and then the interplay between the people that are about to collide. So, it’s fun.
MF: Halle, what would you say to moviegoers to get them excited for this film?
Halle Berry: Gritty. Sexy. Character driven. Action. We’ve got some chases you haven’t seen before. It’s a love letter to LA. You see it in a brand-new way. We haven’t seen the city like that in a very long time.

MF: Halle, can you expand on that? What do you mean by a “love letter to LA”?
HB: Well, because you see all of what the city encompasses. You see the glamour and the glitz, but you see the underbelly, you see the real. I think there is beauty in the real. Anything that’s real and true, I think people see beauty and truth in. He captured it in a beautiful way and the cinematography highlights it in the best way.
MF: Chris, you just used the word “Relevant” to describe the film. What did you mean by that?
CH: Well, we didn’t write the script, Bart Layton wrote the script. It’s based on a short story. He talks about wanting to have it entertaining, but if you could smuggle in questions that we’re asking ourselves about, I suppose “relevant” now being the system being unfair and people breaking out of the social expectations or what we’re being told is the good and what we’re being told is evil and provoking more of the conversation around the ambiguity of things, the humanity in all of us, and how whatever side of the fence you may sit on, you’re going to find good and bad people. It’s not as clean cut as like, “Well, you’re from there. That means I can put you in that box.” It’s a lot more, open for discussion. The tropes that maybe you walk into a film and expect within these characters, I do feel we break out of those and there’s some unexpected turns. I think when I watch those movies, it certainly provokes a second discussion with yourself around, “Oh, I’ve met people like that and I assumed that in a second, and how wrong I was.” They’re going through something; they’re doing their best. Nothing’s as simple as we’d like to think.

MF: Halle, how would you describe your character in your own words and how she connects to Chris’ character?
HB: Well, I think what we discovered about our characters, they both come from meager beginnings, right? That connected us as characters in the movie. But my character has worked hard as a woman of color to get where she got to in her insurance company. Rightfully so, she’s expecting the rightful promotion and the rightful place within that system. She gets painfully made aware that she has aged out and that and she’s no longer useful. That is the moment that I think she feared, always knew could come, but somehow thought she was different and realized she’s not. So, she got presented with a moral question about what will you do when you realize the system is unfair? How will you mitigate that? And she makes a choice.
MF: Chris, how would you describe your character and why he teams up with Halle’s character?
CH: There’s this crisis of identity, I think. I’m not going to speak for her, but with my character, what he thought was going to bring fulfillment and happiness, it was material wealth. He literally has a number of which if he gets to that number, it’ll solve all his problems. There’s this beautiful line that her character says, “Those who come from chaos, crave order.” I think that speaks volumes with many people’s experiences, especially if you’re in your formative years and there’s abuse and neglect and you don’t have that foundation to fall back upon. You seek it in all the wrong places, or you attempt to build structure and safety through outside acknowledgement or status or material wealth. We all know that that doesn’t hold true. What is important and what they need is love, connection, support, and to be seen by people who also have had similar experiences. That’s a true connection that they are both seeking.

MF: Finally, Chris, obviously you grew up differently than your character but how did you tap into his intensity for this film?
CH: I mean, I grew up in a beautiful household, but we had very little money and were certainly aware of the financial burden my parents were under. It was week to week paychecks to pay for food and bills. I’d see and feel the stress that was on them. I literally was like, “Oh, I could become an actor and I could pay the house off finally.” I remember asking my dad, “When will you pay it off?” He was like, “Oh, never mate.” My dad worked as a social worker in child protection and was doing one of the most important jobs, protecting those who were the most vulnerable of us, that being children. Yet, he was tied to the bank in that way and was never going to escape it. So, I empathized or connected with the idea of that financial burden, if I could solve that thing, that will fix it. Then I did that, and then you arrive at an existential crisis of, “Well, now what?” It brings you happiness for a period, but then it’s about something else. Then you go into your second mountain of life. It’s like there’s something deeper, there’s some other burning inner desire. Your psyche stops speaking up, and your soul wants something else. None of that I have answered yet, but it’s been around my brain a lot in the recent times.

What is the plot of ‘Crime 101’?
A jewel thief named Mike Davis’ (Chris Hemsworth) heists along the 101 freeway have left police baffled. When he sets his sights on the ultimate score, his plans intersect with those of insurance broker Sharon Colvin (Halle Berry). A detective named Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) believes he has cracked Mike’s pattern and is determined to bring him down before the next job.

Sam Mendes is busy making linked movies under the banner The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.
The movies will be released in 2028.
The cameras have already been rolling on Sam Mendes’ ambitious aim to chronicle a particular period in the life of musical sensations The Beatles, known as ‘The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event.’

With the backing of Sony Pictures Classics –– not to mention being granted full life story and music rights by Beatles holding company Apple Corps Ltd. (not the iPhone gang), surviving members McCartney and Starr and the families of deceased colleagues Lennon and Harrison –– Mendes will make four different biopics, covering each Beatles’ experiences during the band’s rise to massive popularity.
Though a strict time period for what the movies will cover has yet to be announced, the idea is for the stories to (naturally intersect), looking to get a fuller, clearer picture of their time than any one movie could hope to accomplish.

When will ‘The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event’ be in theaters?

The current plan is for all four movies to land in April 2028.

As with Johansson, Stan’s casting is neither confirmed, nor do we know what role he might play. Though if you ask us, he’s a possible candidate for Harvey Dent/Two-Face, assuming Reeves is even including the character.
Little is known officially about what Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will tackle, but we do know that Colin Farrell is likely to return as Oz Cobb, the villainous gangster nicknamed “The Penguin” while ‘The Batman’ actors Andy Serkis (Alfred) and Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon) are also predicted to be back.
We can probably expect to see Batman tackle another menace from his rogues’ gallery, with Barry Keoghan teased as a potential Joker at the end of the original movie, but nothing confirmed about him actually playing the role.
And there had been chatter about Clayface, but with the character set to get his own movie within the main DC Studios universe (as opposed to ‘The Batman’, which falls under the ‘Elseworlds’ banner of movies/TV that don’t fit there), we’d expect someone else to threaten our hero.
Following a variety of release date shifts as Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin honed the script, the movie is currently set to land on screens on October 1, 2027.
