  • ‘Barbie’ Adds More to Cast

Barbie’ is one of those movies that it’s hard to get a handle on. When you know that Mattel is working with Warner Bros. to adapt the iconic toy, your first thought might be of a cheap animated cash-in designed to sell more of the plastic princess.

Instead, the idea – even before it arrived at Warners – appears to be looking to make a more interesting live-action version that explores the character in different ways.

Especially given that ‘Little Women’s Greta Gerwig, not a name associated with cash-ins, is directing, and that she wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. Yes, ‘Marriage Story’ and ‘Frances Ha’s Baumbach, who probably came closest to what people expect from a ‘Barbie’ movie when he penned ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’.

And the casting for the new movie has been, shall we say, eclectic, with the latest crop including ‘One Night in Miami’s Kingsley Ben-Adir, ‘Cheers’ veteran Rhea Perlman, ‘Sex Education’ scene-stealer Ncuti Gatwa, and ‘Promising Young Woman’ Oscar winner Emerald Fennell (here acting as opposed to her ‘Promising’ work behind the camera).

The ensemble, though, is anchored by Margot Robbie, who jumped aboard as star and producer, ready to play the Malibu favorite who, according to the actor “comes with a lot of baggage, and a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”

And attack it she has, teaming up with Gerwig and Baumbach to figure out something that, for now at least, is shrouded in mystery.

Even most of the roles are being kept quiet for now, though we do know that Ryan Gosling (yet another actor not traditionally associated with blockbuster money grabs) is playing Ken.

Since the core duo was attached, ‘Barbie’ has slowly been building its cast, and has certainly kept us all guessing with the people jumping aboard. America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon and ‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu were among the first group.

They were soon joined by trailblazing trans performer Hari Nef and Alexandra Shipp, most recently seen in the Oscar-nominated ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’. Also on the list? Ariana Greenblatt and Will Ferrell, who unlike many of the others, actually has a potential role – he’s rumored to play a toy company CEO (wonder if he’ll be anything like ‘The Lego Movie’s President Business?)

Among the most recent additions to the cast are Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, and ‘The Afterparty’s Jamie Demetriou.

And Gatwa isn’t the only person from Netflix hit series ‘Sex Education’; his co-stars Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells are also on board.

Before it was at Warners, ‘Barbie’ was in development at Sony, where Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were attached at different times to play the lead, while ‘Juno’s Diablo Cody wrote at least one draft of the script.

Gerwig has been shooting the movie since early this year at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios just outside of London. ‘Barbie’ doesn’t have a set release date yet but should be in theaters next year.

  • Margot Robbie ‘Barbie’ Movie Taps Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach to Write Script

Margot Robbie ‘Barbie’ Movie Taps Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach to Write Script

    A24

The upcoming “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie as the iconic plastic doll is getting a major dose of indie cred, with celebrated filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach joining the production to write the script. Gerwig may also direct the project.

While Gerwig and Baumbach have made some lauded films — Gerwig was nominated for the Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Oscars for 2017’s “Lady Bird,” while Baumbach received a Best Original Screenplay nod for 2006’s “The Squid and the Whale” — they’re not exactly known for product-driven, blockbuster fare. So why, then, would Warner Bros. hire the indie darling duo for such a big brand name flick?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the unlikely pairing makes sense precisely because it’s so odd. Now, not only will audience interest be piqued, but “Barbie” is much more likely to have a distinct voice — and set itself apart from similar fare — with such notable talent behind the scenes.

It also seems likely that “Barbie” courted Gerwig specifically thanks to her talent for telling female-driven stories. Earlier this year, Robbie noted that the Barbie brand was an empowering one that celebrated creativity, and encouraged kids to pursue their dreams. Gerwig’s particular point of view dovetails nicely with that sentiment, and with her and Baumbach guiding the character’s onscreen presence, we’re hopeful that “Barbie” won’t be just another empty box office cash grab.

Recent reports indicated that “Barbie” would be hitting theaters in 2020. Stay tuned to see if that release schedule sticks.

  • Margot Robbie Confirmed to Star in ‘Barbie’ Movie

Margot Robbie Confirmed to Star in ‘Barbie’ Movie

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

After years in limbo, a movie about the world’s most famous doll, Barbie, is finally coming to the big screen. And it’s got the perfect star attached.

According to Variety, Margot Robbie has been confirmed to headline “Barbie,” portraying the titular toy that’s been a staple of childhood play for generations. Robbie — who will also produce the project — had been rumored to be in consideration for the part last year, after several other high-profile attempts to bring the doll to the big screen (including versions where she was played by Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway) failed to come together.

In a statement, Robbie noted that the iconic toy represented more than just a doll.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” Robbie said. “I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”

According to Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, the studio plans to “bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences.” There’s no word yet on who may direct, but if the rumor about Patty Jenkins circling the project also comes true, this film will definitely be a must-see.

“Barbie” had previously been due for a 2020 release date at old studio Sony. Stay tuned to see when Warner Bros. and Robbie plan to debut the feature.

  • Now Margot Robbie Is in Talks for the ‘Barbie’ Movie … Directed by Patty Jenkins?

Now Margot Robbie Is in Talks for the ‘Barbie’ Movie … Directed by Patty Jenkins?

    Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie
    Warner Bros.

First Amy Schumer. Then Anne Hathaway. Now Margot Robbie is reportedly in talks for the “Barbie” movie.

It feels like they’re really getting close to the holy grail of castings. Just one more new announcement and they should arrive at Betty White.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros. for a movie based on the doll, with WB’s Harley Quinn herself — Margot Robbie — in early talks to star.

THR‘s sources added that “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins was “circling the Warners project but indicate there are no substantive talks or offers that have taken place.”

This is either an elaborate troll … or already a better “Barbie” movie than Barbie could ever dream of — even from the best room of her dreamhouse.

The “Barbie” rights reverted back to Mattel earlier this year, after a Barbie movie was in development at Sony for years.

Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    Sony Pictures Entertainment

A Sony/Mattel movie was first announced in 2014, attached Amy Schumer in 2016, and then lost her but added Anne Hathaway in 2017. At that point, Sony also gave the film a June 2018 release date. Earlier this year Sony moved the movie to May 8, 2020.

But now … apparently Hathaway is out and Robbie is in? Will the release date move too?

Whatever happens from here, as long as Robbie does sign on, it’s a big step up all around. No offense to Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, or Amy Schumer, but Oscar nominee Margot Robbie is currently on a hot streak and it’s a coup to get her on board. Plus, she already looks like a Barbie doll.

    Suggestion: Bradley Cooper as Ken?

Or nab Leonardo DiCaprio for a third movie with Margot Robbie, after “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“?

Or maybe get Chris Pine back for another project with Patty Jenkins, if she does direct?

  • Anne Hathaway Heads Off ‘Fat Shame’ by Explaining Her Weight Gain Is for a Movie

    Don’t even bother, Hathahaters.

Anne Hathaway knows the drill. If she shows up in a paparazzi or premiere photo looking a bit thicker, people are going to have a lot to say. So she’s getting ahead of that conversation by providing some context in advance — she’s filming a movie that requires body transformation. (Can we call all weight changes for movies Pulling a Bale? It’s fun.)

It appears that the role isn’t just eating junk food, which is our current life role. She’s clearly putting on some muscle, since she shared her weight gain intel with a workout montage video:

Hathaway, 35, didn’t reveal the movie she’s working on. She’s in the “Ocean’s 8” movie opening June 8, but that completed filming. She also has post-production credits for movies “The Hustle” and “Serenity.” Maybe it’s for the “Barbie” movie? But that doesn’t really make a lot of sense — especially since that release date was pushed back to 2020.

It’s possible she’s slipping in another movie between the completed projects and “Barbie.” Until she announces the movie, or a production company release more details, we’ll just have to stay mildly curious. But not so curious that we can’t just leave her to it for a while.

  • Anne Hathaway’s ‘Barbie’ Movie Release Date Pushed Back Two Years

Life in plastic is looking less fantastic – for “Barbie” and several other rescheduled films.

You remember the live-action “Barbie” movie, yes? Amy Schumer was first attached in 2016, and then Anne Hathaway stepped in last summer. The movie, directed by Alethea Jones, was supposed to open in June 2018, and then August 2018. Well, now it’s opening on May 8 … 2020.

That’s the news from Sony, which shared some updates from its reshuffled schedule.

    According to Entertainment Weekly:

    • The “Superfly” reboot just got itself release date, and it’s June 15.
    • An as-yet-untitled animated movie from “The LEGO Movie” and former “Solo” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is scheduled to open February 7, 2020.
    • The “Slender Man” opening has been pushed back three months to August 24, 2018.
    • Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s Holmes and Watson was pushed back six weeks to December 21.
    • The thriller “Cadaver” has been removed from the release schedule.
    • And “Barbie” will now come out on May 8, 2020. Unless they move it again.

Thankfully, Anne Hathaway’s next film, “Ocean’s 8,” doesn’t seem to be budging from its release date of June 8, 2018.

  • Anne Hathaway as Barbie Draws Strong Response From Amy Schumer, Twitter

Anne Hathaway Visits 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'Amy Schumer‘s departure from “Barbie” left the starring role available for Anne Hathaway to step in, and the comedian had a strong reaction to her replacement.

No, this isn’t the start of a new feud. There’s no need to proclaim yourself Team Schumer or Team Hathaway, because it sounds like the previous would-be star of the movie is Team Hathaway herself. Schumer commented on reports that Hathaway is in talks for the role, and she had good things to say after first being jokingly dismissive.

“Hathaway smathaway,” she wrote, alongside an Instagram photo of herself, “jkjk she’s perfect!! Can’t wait to see it!”

There were some people who had the same mindset as Schumer and were equally excited about the news.

However, that wasn’t the case for everyone. A lot of people were very adamant that Hathaway was not right for the part.

Hathaway shouldn’t let the haters get her down, though, because life in plastic, it’s fantastic. She’ll show us when the movie hits theaters in 2018.

  • Amy Schumer Is No Longer Starring in the ‘Barbie’ Movie

GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2016 - Red Carpet ArrivalsThe “Barbie” movie just suffered a big loss.

Amy Schumer has bowed out of the comedy, citing scheduling conflicts, Variety reports. The goal had been for production to start in late June, but the comedian couldn’t fit it in with everything else on her plate. She’s set to shoot the dramedy “She Came to Me” with Steve Carell and Nicole Kidman, and she also has to promote her upcoming Fox comedy “Snatched” ahead of its May theatrical release.

It sounds like Schumer was disappointed to leave the project, but the studio couldn’t push back its June 29, 2018 release date, according to Variety sources.

“The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners,” she said in a statement. “I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Whoever fills Schumer’s shoes will play a character banished from Barbieland for not being perfect enough. In the real world, she’ll have new adventures and probably — we’re just guessing here, but come on — discover that everyone is perfect in their own way. Even without the comedian, it’s bound to be cute.

  • Amy Schumer Responds to Critics of Her Grammy Nods & ‘Barbie’ Casting

Amy Schumer feels sorry for the trolls out there “who are in more pain than we will ever understand.” She also thanked them for making it clear with their comments that she was a good choice for her two Grammy nominations and new “Barbie” movie.

Yep, she’s going for a Kill Them With Patronizing Kindness approach!

Schumer is a magnet for both praise and criticism, but like many people on social media, she tends to have the strongest reaction to the criticism. She was just nominated for two Grammys — one for Best Spoken Word album for “The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo,” and the other for Best Comedy Album for “Live At the Apollo” — and she’s currently in talks to play the lead and co-write the script for a live-action “Barbie” movie.

In an inspiring new Instagram post, she thanked her supporters for their positive responses, and dismissed the “trolls” who insist on letting her know that they don’t think she’s attractive or funny:

A photo posted by @amyschumer on

“Very very honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys and to be considered to play an important and evolving icon. Is it fat shaming if you know you’re not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don’t think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love. Where’s the shame? It’s not there. It’s an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. Im a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I’m a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making tv and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I’m fearless like you can be. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support and again my deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It’s that kind of response that let’s you know something’s wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it. Anyone who has ever been bullied or felt bad about yourself I am out there fighting for you, for us. And I want you to fight for yourself too! We need to laugh at the haters and sympathize with them. They can scream as loud as they want. We can’t hear them because we are getting sh*t done. I am proud to lead by example. ‘I say if I’m beautiful, I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story. I will’ #thegirlwiththelowerbacktattoo”

Her post has earned a lot of positive feedback, so hopefully she sees that her fans have her back and appreciate that she is leading by example. No one should be holding out for universal popularity — heck, even Betty White probably has a “hater” out there — and some criticism is worth considering for its merits. But, you should never let it crowd out the praise.

  • Amy Schumer in Talks to Star in and Co-Write ‘Barbie’ Movie

People<a href=Amy Schumer might be a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world.

The comedian and actress is in talks to star in and co-write the script of Sony’s live-action “Barbie” movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie is described as a “a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.”

Sony and Mattel have been developing the project for some time. Last year, they hired three writers to turn in scripts, and ended up choosing Hilary Winston’s. Schumer and sister Kim Caramele are expected to rewrite it. A director has yet to be hired.

The story begins with a woman in a land of perfect Barbies who realizes she doesn’t fit in. She journeys to the real world, where she finds being unique is an asset. Schumer’s casting seems to indicate Mattel wants to shake up Barbie’s image of stick-thin beauty.
