We never thought it’d happen … but “Bad Boys for Life,” the third film in the over-the-top action franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, is finally coming out. And you know how we know? Because there’s an official trailer to prove it!

The third “Bad Boys” feature has been caught in a cycle of false starts and dead ends, with development officially beginning more than 10 years ago in August 2009 when the first screenwriter was hired to write the script. In the course of those ten years, at least two directors have dropped out (franchise mastermind Michael Bay, who was too expensive, and Joe Carnahan, who clashed with star Will Smith but still retains a screenwriting credit) and countless iterations of the script commissioned. Filming finally took place this year, from January to June, under the direction of Belgian filmmaking team Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and leadership of franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

And honestly … the trailer looks pretty great. It’s got all the hallmarks of the franchise (explosions, macho posturing, F-bombs) in a less expansive Michael Bay-sized package. In other words: we’re in!

“Bad Boys for Life” hits theaters (yes actually) on January 17, 2020.

Joey Pants is one of the “Bad Boys For Life.”

Emmy-winning “Sopranos” actor Joe Pantoliano will reprise his role as Captain Howard in the third installment of the buddy-cop franchise, joining stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, according to Deadline.

The long-awaited movie has been in the works for many years. The original movie came out in 1995 and the sequel in 2003. Original director Michael Bay first talking about making “Bad Boys 3” back in 2008.

The project has experienced a revolving door of directors, until Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah came on board earlier this year. Smith was able to find time in his busy schedule and finally, filming began in November.

Pantoliano’s Captain Howard worked at the Miami Police Department and oversaw Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence).

The plot of the third installment is rumored to find Marcus as a private investigator, with Mike still a police officer. But they team up once again when a bounty is placed on their heads by an Albanian mercenary whose brother was killed by the former partners.

“Bad Boys for Life” is slated for release January 17, 2020.

Martin Lawrence is a Bad Boy for life.

The actor confirmed, via Instagram post, that he is on board for “Bad Boys 3,” the long-in-the-works sequel to the hit 1995 and 2003 films co-starring Will Smith.

Earlier this year, Sony slated the the movie, titled “Bad Boys For Life,” for January 17, 2020. Up-and-coming directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Snowfall”) were hired.  But while Smith was confirmed to reprise his role, it was unclear if Lawrence would return.

Now, he’s made it official. Miami detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey are back in the business of catching criminals.

The sequel has gone through the “will this actually happen?” roller coaster, mostly due to Smith’s very busy schedule. Then, there was a revolving door of directors. Finally, the stars have aligned and Smith has an opening to shoot the movie next year.

The plot is rumored to find Marcus as a private investigator, with Mike still a police officer. But they team up once again when a bounty is placed on their heads by an Albanian mercenary whose brother was killed by the former partners.

‘Bad Boys 3’ Production Could Be on Track to Start in Early 2019: Report

    Bad Boys
    Columbia Pictures

Dare we say the will they, won’t they of “Bad Boys 3” seems to be moving in the direction fans want?

The long-awaited sequel is likely to get a green light soon, Variety reports. Now, to be fair, we’ve heard that before — Will Smith said in December 2016 that the film was “very, very, very close” — yet this time, there may be good reason to hope it really is. Word is that Will Smith is already on board, Martin Lawrence is in talks, and production could start as soon as early 2019.

Sony declined to comment on the news, as Variety reported, so nothing is official. Nonetheless, we’re cautiously optimistic. “Bad Boys 3” was previously set for a January 2020 release date, and production kicking off in early 2019 seems to be in line with keeping that scheduled date.

There have been a lot of starts and stops for “Bad Boys” fans over the years, but we just keep hoping the sequel is eventually going to come for us.

  • ‘Bad Boys 3’ Is Back, Now With a 2020 Release Date

    Here we go again!

It feels like every year “Bad Boys 3” gets a new departure date, only to be delayed again like it’s stuck in perpetual airport limbo.

But at least they’re still trying. And this time — nine months after it was removed from Sony’s previous release calendar — “Bad Boys III” is scheduled for January 17, 2020.

The first “Bad Boys” movie came out in 1995, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami detectives. The sequel, “Bad Boys II,” came out in 2003. Lawrence and Smith have been talking about “Bad Boys III” since at least 2010. Then it was officially announced back in 2015, with Joe Carnahan as director, and a release date set for February 2017.

Then the film was delayed again to January 12, 2018 — but with the threequel getting the official title “Bad Boys for Life” and Sony even adding the hopeful note to EW that “Bad Boys 4” was still in the works with a release date of July 3, 2019.

But forget all of that now. Joe Carnahan left as director in early 2017 due to scheduling conflicts, and Sony removed the third movie from its schedule this past August. After many years, it looked like “Bad Boys III” might never be made at all. Whatcha gonna do?

But now, TheWrap reports, “Bad Boys III” — still called “Bad Boys for Life” — is back on the calendar for January 17, 2020.

We’ll stay cautiously optimistic, but until the stars show up at the movie premiere, the date will stay in pencil not ink.

  • Will Smith Updates on ‘Bad Boys 3’: ‘It Is Very Close’

“Bad Boys 3” is becoming the new “Groundhog Day.” Every few months, we’ll get a new tease. Each tease is nearly identical to the last one, promising that the third movie is really going to happen. This has been going on for years, and each time the stars say the movie is coming soon, it feels like they’re just perfecting the promise, until one day we’ll wake up and the movie will magically appear.

“It is very, very, very close,” Will Smith told Jimmy Kimmel on last night’s show. “It is very close. It is very close.”

Smith didn’t get a chance to explain what in heaven’s name is taking so long, since he was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to talk about his new movie “Collateral Beauty” and Kimmel only saved about 20 seconds to talk about “Bad Boys 3.” (And Kimmel used those seconds to do most of the talking himself.)

Kimmel mentioned that Martin Lawrence had been on his show in October and said they’d “maybe” start production on “Bad Boys 3” in March 2017. The audience cheered when Kimmel brought that up, but it sounds like it was more hope than reality. Smith didn’t confirm March, he just said the movie was “close,” and expressed his affection for Martin Lawrence. “Let me tell you, I love that dude. One of the best times I’ve ever had making movies, so I’m looking forward [to the new movie].”The first “Bad Boys” movie came out in 1995, followed by “Bad Boys II” in 2003. Back in August, it was revealed that the third movie had a title, if nothing else: “Bad Boys For Life,” borrowing its name from a line from Smith to Lawrence in the second film. The third film also has a new release date — January 12, 2018, rescheduled from the previous date of February 17, 2017. No idea if January 2018 is still the plan, but there’s also still supposedly a “Bad Boys 4” scheduled for 2019.

“We do one a decade,” Smith joked to Kimmel, who in turn joked that they’ll eventually get to “Bad Old Men.” Let’s just hope fans live to see it happen.

  • ‘Bad Boys 3’ Gets New Title and 2018 Release Date

Stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have been teasing us for more than six years now that “Bad Boys 3” is on its way, yet with each passing year, there’s been no real news about its release. Sony got fans’ hopes up last year when they announced 2017 release dates for not one but two sequels to the action franchise, only to see no additional details about those flicks materialize. But now, it seems that “Bad Boys 3” at the very least is finally back on track, with the studio announcing a new release date and a new title for the flick.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the threequel is now called “Bad Boys For Life,” and is slated for release on January 12, 2018. That’s almost a full year later than the flick’s initially announced release date of February 17, 2017, but at least Sony is still updating fans on the project, which Smith had insisted as recently as this past February was still happening.

As EW notes, the new title is a reference to a line from “Bad Boys II,” where Smith tells Lawrence, “We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life.”

One Bad Boy who didn’t sign on for life is Michael Bay, who’s sitting out the proceedings this time after directing the first two films in 1995 and 2003. Now, Joe Carnahan (“The Grey,” “Smokin’ Aces”) will be taking the helm.

According to EW, “Bad Boys 4” is still slated to happen, and also has a new release date: July 3, 2019. It’s likely to get a new title, too. Stay tuned for more intel as it becomes available.
