    • Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are in talks to handle the next two ‘Avengers’ movies.
    • Marvel wants them for an untitled 2026 effort and 20207’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
    • They have yet to officially commit.

It has been a few years of swings and roundabouts for Marvel, both in general and in particular when it comes to plans for the company’s next two giant team-up movies under the ‘Avengers’ banner.

The new movies, which are still going through a tricky development process, will gather various characters (both legacy and newer) to tackle giant threats. And they’d be compared to the massively (think $4 billion dollars combined massively) successful ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

So, who is the Marvel team looking to recruit to take on that not-miniscule challenge? How about the directors of, er, ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’?

Yes, take a bow Joe and Anthony Russo, who are now in early talks to make both movies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

To say the road to the new ‘Avengers’ films has been problematic is to say the ocean can be a tad damp.

Originally announced as part of a big reveal by studio boss Kevin Feige at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con about future “phase” developments, the new movies were called ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

‘The Kang Dynasty’ has been the real sticking point here. Though the plan had presumably been to build to a confrontation with Jonathan Majors’ multiversal villain, Majors found himself cut by Marvel after accusations (and, later a guilty result) of harassment.

While ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton boarded the film shortly after it was announced, he’s since stepped away. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy has reportedly offered been the gig since then, but reports about the Russos’ potential input means he seemingly passed on the idea.

And on the writing front, veteran Marvel scribe Michael Waldron, creator of the ‘Loki’ series, was the most recent person hired to work on the script for the movie, which is currently without a title, likely so Marvel can find a fresh focus.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

‘Secret Wars’ has been more of a mystery on the filmmaking front.

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars?

    Marvel Studios' 'Avengers: Secret Wars.'
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

‘Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom. We’ll have to wait and see whether that actually happens, though some of Hickman’s run has been referenced on screen in ‘Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness’.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars’, so you can certainly see the appeal for them. We’d be shocked if they didn’t look to collaborate again with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote most of their previous Marvel output.

What have the Russo brothers worked on since ‘Endgame’?

Since their Marvel stint, the pair have become powerhouse producers, backing the likes of Prime Video’s ‘Citadel’ series and Netflix’s Chris Hemsworth-starring action movie franchise ‘Extraction’. They also helped shepherd Oscar winner ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

And on the directorial front, the brothers made Apple movie ‘Cherry’ starring Tom Holland (no stranger to the Russos’ work) and Netflix action thriller ‘The Gray Man’, starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.

Upcoming, they have Netflix sci-fi ‘The Electric State’, which finished shooting last year and has been going through post-production. That should be with us later this year.

The directors had talked about more from the world of ‘The Gray Man’, but if the take the chance to return to Marvel, that will go strictly on the backburner (unless they hand off another movie to someone else).

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

Marvel is planning to have the first –– still without an official title as of writing –– in theaters on May 1st, 2026, with ‘Secret Wars’ following on May 7th, 2027.

A safe pair of hands, then, but clearly a pair Marvel is hoping will return.

    • Jonathan Majors has been found guilty of Misdemeanor Assault.
    • Marvel has announced that the actor is no longer working on its projects.
    • The trial even before the verdict has had a negative impact on his career.

There was a time when Jonathan Majors was a rising star who looked to be the Next Big Thing. He had been praised for his work in movies such as 2019’s ‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’, 2020’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and had serious buzz off indie movie ‘Magazine Dreams’, which scored praise at Sundance this year.

And then there was the tag-team kudos from his role as Kang (and variants) in Marvel shows and movies such as ‘Loki’ Season 1 and ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’, with the studio betting big on his character for future projects, and his performance in ‘Creed III’.

Now? All seems to have gone very wrong for the actor.

Majors was arrested back in March on several assault and harassment charges. In the complaint, his accuser claims the defendant “struck her about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.” She also claims he “put his hand on her neck, causing bruising and substantial pain.”

He was charged with several counts of assault in the third degree, three counts of attempted assault in the third degree, one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree, and one count harassment in the second degree.

Neither he nor his accuser testified during the nearly two-week trial, and he was today convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. A Manhattan jury found the actor guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault but acquitted him on two other counts.

The six-person jury found Majors not guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree. He’ll be sentenced on February 6th, with the potential of up to a year in jail, which could be reduced to probation.

Marvel, via a spokesperson has announced that it is severing ties with the actor following the verdict, which means plans for him to feature in ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ have been scrubbed.

What exactly Marvel will do about the movie remains to be seen, though it’s worth noting that it’s in need of a director after ‘Shang-Chi’ filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton stepped away to focus on other projects.

As for Kang, whether the character will simply disappear, or the company plans to re-cast the role remains to be seen for now.

Disney’s Searchlight arm had picked up ‘Magazine Dreams’ at Sundance for a sizeable (though not officially disclosed) sum and was planning to release it this month. But the movie is now off the schedule for the foreseeable future.

As the trial continued, Majors was fired by his manager 360 Entertainment and publicist The Lede Company. The actor was also let go from myriad projects including Protagonist Pictures‘ feature adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel, ‘The Man in My Basement’, ad campaigns for the Texas Rangers MLB team and the U.S. Army. Several other projects involving Majors — including Spike Lee’s ‘Da Understudy’ for Amazon and the Dennis Rodman film ‘48 Hours in Vegas’ for Lionsgate — remain in limbo.

    • Destin Daniel Cretton recently dropped out of directing ‘The Kang Dynasty’.

Michael Waldron is quickly becoming a go-to writer for Marvel. Which isn’t too surprising, since he launched and ran (alongside director Kate Herron) the first season of ‘Loki’, which became one of the most successful Marvel/Disney+ series to hit small screens.

For his latest assignment, he’s going to write the script for the company’s ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ (assuming it keeps that title; more on that below).

While Waldron mostly stepped away from ‘Loki’s second season to focus on other projects, he’s also worked on other Marvel projects.

He stepped in to re-write the script for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, working alongside director Sam Raimi to develop the movie when previous filmmaker Scott Derrickson stepped aside because of creative differences with Marvel.

That, in turn led to the company hiring Waldron to write ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which is following ‘The Kang Dynasty’.

In addition to his MCU duties, he’s also set up a wealth of other projects (all being kept quiet for now) via a big deal between Marvel/20th Television and his production company, Anomaly Pictures.

Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.’

At San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced a swath of new Marvel movies and shows, outlining much of Phases 5 and 6 for his company.

With ‘Loki’s first season dropping the first breadcrumbs about the multiverse-spanning villain Kang (played by Jonathan Majors in the show and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’), the plan was to build him up as the next big bad to follow Thanos.

That whole connected storyline was to have concluded in ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ in 2025 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2026.

It wasn’t long after that that Destin Daniel Cretton was announced as director for ‘The Kang Dynasty’ as part of his big overall Disney/Marvel deal in the wake of ‘Shang-Chi’ doing well.

Now, though, after some release date shifts for both ‘The Kang Dynasty’ (to 2026) and’ Secret Wars’ (moving to 2027), Cretton has stepped away from the director’s chair for the former movie.

Cretton will focus on other projects in the pipeline, including an in-the-works ‘Wonder Man’ TV series for Marvel and Disney+ and a potential ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel.

    Will Kang Be Dropped?

Marvel has been wrangling over how to deal with the Jonathan Majors situation. With the actor involved in a thorny legal issue, he’s not exactly someone the company’s parent Disney is looking to be in business with.

Jeff Loveness, who had been on board to write ‘Kang Dynasty’ was reportedly let go from the company at some point before Cretton left the movie.

Thanks to the multiverse idea, there is scope for the studio to pivot away from him, while there are plenty of other villains who could conceivably threaten the group of heroes. And with Waldron aboard, it appears that Kevin Feige and co. are looking for consistency between the two giant movies that wrap up Phase 6.

Marvel clearly seems to be in a licking its wounds phase right now, particularly on the heels of poor box office results for ‘The Marvels’.

And it appears the company may be looking for a change in direction on a future project if the news about it is anything to go by.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who jumped from more of an indie movie world to huge MCU success with ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ (which was a big box office hit in 2021), is no longer aboard to direct future team-up film ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.

Between this news and rumblings about the future of Kang as a whole, it’s looking increasingly likely that Marvel might be moving away from the character altogether.

Talking on the House of R podcast, writer Joanna Robinson (who has plenty of Marvel sources having written a huge book on Marvel’s movies to date), mentioned that ‘Quantumania’ screenwriter Jeff Loveness, who had been on board to write ‘The Kang Dynasty’ was no longer working for the studio? The reason –– he’d been deep in planning the Kang storyline, but the studio appeared to be moving away from the whole idea.

It’s far from a giant shock, though, since Marvel has been wrangling over how to deal with the Jonathan Majors situation. With the actor involved in a thorny legal issue, he’s not exactly someone the company’s parent Disney is looking to be in business with.

    • Marvel is reportedly considering a return for some beloved Avengers stars.
    • Jonathan Majors’ ongoing legal problems are proving a headache.
    • The studio has faced issues with newer movies such as ‘Blade’ and others.

There was a time when Marvel was on top of the Hollywood tree –– its movies were almost always guaranteed hits, people were loving the interconnected storylines and there was hope that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could stretch its Hydra-like tentacles into the world of streaming, providing a wealth of content for Disney+.

These days, there is more trouble than an assault from Doctor Doom (who we’ll have to wait to see on screen). Recent releases aside from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ have failed to set the box office alight and there have been quality concerns about visual effects on screens big and small, a key element of making the stories work.

So, how does it plan to try and right the ship? According to a new report from Variety, the studio could look to its past to help its future.

Could the original Avengers actors return?

Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. in 'The Avengers.'
(L to R) Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. in ‘The Avengers.’ Photo: Courtesy of Marvel Studios.

While this is far from a concrete possibility, the Variety story cites sources saying there have been discussions about bringing back the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson to reprise their roles as fan-favorite Avengers characters.

Of course, all that would depend on whether the actors would even want to return at this point, and perhaps more crucially, the realization that the budget to pay the salaries of the likes of RDJ would require breaking several piggy banks.

Still, the idea of the Avengers as a selling point would help assuage issues with someone who was planned to be the big bad of future team-up films. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

Yes, one of the biggest problems currently facing Marvel is Jonathan Majors, who appeared as different variations of the multiversal character Kang in ‘Loki’ Season 1 (he’s back as another version for Season 2) and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’.

But Majors is embroiled in a huge domestic violence legal case with a trial set for later this month. And that is a giant headache for both Marvel and parent company Disney (which pulled the planned release of his Sundance movie ‘Magazine Dreams’ from the release slate amid all the legal worries).

The MCU team has yet to specify how it’ll address the issue going forward –– but it needs to figure it out quickly as the first of the new ‘Avengers’ movies was supposed to be shooting next year (though that could also be delayed thanks to the knock-on effect of the actors’ strike). There’s a chance the studio could recast the role or pivot to some other villain.

    ‘Blade’s blunted path to screens

    Marvel Studios' 'Blade.'
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade.’

Blade’ was supposed to be one title that got fans particularly excited. Marvel boss Kevin Feige announced Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as the new version of the vampire-battling vigilante once portrayed by Wesley Snipes.

Yet that has faced its own issues – two directors so far, several writers, innumerable drafts of the script (including, reportedly, one where Blade was the fourth lead in his own movie) and a shutdown six weeks before shooting was to begin.

Michael Green, who wrote ‘Logan’, is the latest writer aboard and the aim is to shoot the movie on a cheaper budget next year.

Now, according to Cumberbatch himself, we might have more of an idea when we’ll see the good –– and not always so good –– Doctor, as talking during a long interview for the JW3 Speaker series, he said, “there are some Marvel capers in the making next year.”

    Intriguing!

At the end of 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, Strange, freshly returned from his trip to parallel worlds and a battle against Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff (who was looking to harness the power of the multiverse to be reunited with her children), is insisting to Wong (Benedict Wong) that he hasn’t been affected by the dark magic of the tome known as the Darkhold.

But moments later, as he walks down the street he collapses to his knees in pain, screaming as a third eye (similar to one used by his “dark” alternate self in another universe) opens on his forehead.

In the first post-credits scene for the movie, we learn what happens next, more or less. Jumping forward in time, the scene follows Strange out for another walk with a scarf on, only to find himself confronted by a purple-costumed woman who appears from another dimension.

Her name is Clea, and she has a bone to pick with Strange. “You caused an incursion, and we’re gonna fix it,” she tells him. This calls back to a threat mentioned in the main body of the film, where multiversal travel is noted to risk “incursions” where two universes collide, and one is destroyed.

Insisting he’s not afraid, Strange transforms his scarf into his usual cloak and he heads off with Clea.

(L to R) Charlize Theron and Benedict Cumberbatch in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’

Naturally, since this involves Marvel, there is very little to go on besides Cumberbatch’s statement since the studio is notoriously tricky in what it reveals ahead of time.

We don’t, therefore, know whether this will be a new stand-alone Strange adventure or point to him teaming up for the new ‘Avengers’ movies planned for the future.

While Disney/Marvel’s release calendar is full for the next couple of years, there are some “untitled” slots that a new Strange movie could fill.

And according to ‘Multiverse of Madness’ writer Michael Waldron, that could well include Clea.

    Here’s what he told Gizmodo:

“We knew that we wanted to introduce Clea. She’s Strange’s great love in the comics and it was felt to me like Strange wasn’t at the point at the start of our movie where he was ready to meet the love of his life. It felt like we had to close the loop with he and Christine Palmer. And so, after she gives him her wisdom to not be afraid of loving someone, then it felt like we were right to tease what could be eventually with he and Clea.”

But then there are also the Avengers movies –– ‘The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars’, which are scheduled for 2026 and 2027. There’s a fair chance that Cumberbatch will be back in action besides other Marvel characters, even if those movies have recently been pushed back by the ongoing writers’ strike and potential actors’ industrial action.

Marvel, of course, has been delaying some of its films’ production and that is having a domino effect for the highly connected cinematic universe, which relies on films to set up the next entries. Lest the tapestry all unravel, that means moving some movies back.

Captain America: Brave New World’ is moving to August 26th next year, which pushes ‘Thunderbolts’ to December 20th, 2024, ‘Blade’ to February 14th, 2025, and the still in-development ‘Fantastic Four’ to May 2nd, 2025.

And because there is only so much space on the calendar (and Disney seemingly already takes up a third of it), that means the next giant, phase-ending team-up movies are also on the move. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ will be bumped back a year, to May 1st, 2026, inheriting the release date for follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which itself is headed to May 7th, 2027.

It’s not all delays for the MCU, though; ‘Deadpool 3’, which is in production, will move up from its original November 8th, 2024, date to May 3rd of that year.

    More ‘Avatar’ delays

'Avatar: The Way of Water' will be available exclusively to purchase on Digital March 28th.
‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will be available exclusively to purchase on Digital March 28th.

Though James Cameron’s movies would seemingly not be impacted by a writers’ strike since their scripts are essentially finished, the series can’t avoid the release date shuffle.

That means ‘Avatar’ fans, already well used to the waiting game, will see their patience tested further, since ‘Avatar 3’ has moved to December 19th, 2025, ‘Avatar 4’ to December 21st, 2029, and ‘Avatar 5’ all the way to December 19th, 2031! which means the apparent final movie will land 22 years after the original 2009 film.

If you were starting to wonder when we might ever see a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, then there’s good news.

2026 will see two movies set in that galaxy far, far away from Lucasfilm, one on May 22nd, 2026 (not the fourth?) and another set for the more traditional recent slot of December 18th that year.

A third film is reportedly headed our way on December 17th, 2027. Disney has yet to clarify any details of which of its in-development movies are taking those berths, but we can assume one is the Rey follow-up starring Daisy Ridley which has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in the director’s chair and was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration. On the basis of that, we can also predict that Dave Filoni’s film and possibly James Mangold‘s movie might be in the other two slots.

There are also dates on the calendar now for films that didn’t have them previously –– the live-action ‘Moana’ is set to surface on June 27th, 2025, while Fede Álvarez’ movie set in the ‘Alien’ universe is arriving on August 16th next year. Espionage thriller ‘The Amateur’, starring Rami Malek, is set for November next year.

  • Director Matt Shakman Gives An Update on ‘Fantastic Four’ Timeline

    Marvel Studio’s ‘Fantastic Four.'
    Marvel Studio’s ‘Fantastic Four.’

Ever since the announcement of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga (well… maybe even beforehand, let’s be honest), fans have indulged in MCU parlor games of speculation, where even non-news can, in its own perverse way, be considered news.

Castings deferred, production dates moved or extended, and theatrical release dates shifted — these are all clues from the beyond, tea leaves or puzzle pieces (depending on your metaphor of choice) to be sifted through.

Of course, several Phase Four films (most notably ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’) have offered up big hints about the unfolding direction of the MCU’s sprawling, multi-film narrative canvas.

But with things officially shifting into Phase Five with the impending release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ what can fans reasonably expect, looking out further on the horizon, with regards to the hotly anticipated return of the MCU’s first family, the Fantastic Four?

Director Matt Shakman Confirms ‘Fantastic Four’ Shooting Timeline

Director Matt Shakman, who turned in superlative, Emmy-nominated worked on ‘WandaVision,’ gave a bit of insight on things in a conversation with Collider, noting that filming on ‘Fantastic Four’ wouldn’t commence until “Early next year.”

In and of itself, in a vacuum, that might not seem like a big deal. But, along with 2024’s ‘Deadpool 3,’ Shakman’s film will not only be tasked with reintroducing beloved comic characters within the context of the MCU, but also feeding into 2025’s ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and the following year’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

The former, set to be helmed by Shawn Levy, made news for confirming Hugh Jackman’s return as James “Logan” Howlett/Wolverine. And, of course, stars Ryan Reynolds and Jackman have continued to stoke the embers of that free media with a goodnatured online rivalry/bro-fest.

The casting of ‘Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm (last embodied on the big screen by Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell, respectively, in director Josh Trank’s 2015 effort) would therefore seem to require some significant star power. Shakman, in his chat with Collider, noted that nothing was yet firm and that any casting rumors circulating online were just that — rumors.

The ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ casting of John Krasinski as an Earth-838 version of Richards seemed, in its own way, a savvy potential trial balloon of sorts. Social media buzzed in advance of the film’s release (some fans weighing in positively, others crying foul, unable to see beyond Krasinski’s role of Jim Halpert), and the specifics of the Earth-838 revelation garnered big in-theater reactions with opening weekend audiences.

Multiverse Saga Allows Producer Kevin Feige a Multitude of Casting Options

Producer Kevin Feige is a masterful showman and public face for the record-smashing Marvel Studios productions. And with the Multiverse Saga, he has a story series custom-built for sleight of hand and media puppet-mastery. In this sense, Marvel seems poised to potentially have its cake and eat it too.

With Jonathan Majors locked in as multiversal adversary Kang the Conqueror and making his debut in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ it seems a safe bet that, whatever exact source material Feige and company choose to most lean into for the aforementioned ‘The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ it will embrace maximum (controlled) chaos.

One wouldn’t be surprised, necessarily, to see Krasinski pop up as Richards — or even Teller. Opposite and in addition to, of course, another performer. So when Shakman says casting rumors are gossip, he’s not lying. Just expect that statement to also remain evergreen for the next couple years.

  • Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery Back For ‘Wonder Man’ Series

Ben Kingsley became a somewhat divisive part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2013 when he first appeared as Trevor Slattery in ‘Iron Man 3’. While plenty of fans embraced the drunken, slapstick actor who had been hired by true villain Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to pose as the Mandarin and lead a terrorist group, some were upset at the twist.

Yet Slattery has since been more favorably embraced, especially after he popped up in a Marvel One-Shot called ‘All Hail the King’, written and directed by ‘Iron Man 3’ co-writer Drew Pearce.

And then came last year’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ where it was revealed that the true Mandarin, Wenwu (played in that movie by Tony Leung) had sprung Slattery from prison and was keeping him around as a sort of court jester. With the help of Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Trevor escaped and helped in the fight against Wenwu.

Now, according to Variety’s sources, Kingsley’s Slattery will be back on our screens, albeit this time on TV via developing Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’.

It’ll see him working again with Destin Daniel Cretton, who is acting as a producer on the show. The bulk of the creative heavy lifting, though, will be carried by Andrew Guest, who has Marvel experience himself thanks to a consulting producer (essentially a writer) on ‘Hawkeye’.

Wonder Man, for those who haven’t heard of him, was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first arrived on Marvel’s pages in ‘Avengers #9’, which was published in 1964. The character’s real name is Simon Williams, son of a rich industrialist whose company runs into trouble after competition from Tony Stark.

Angered by how Stark has affected his family, Williams accepts an offer from Baron Zemo that grants him super strength and durability. He battles the Avengers several times, before joining them.

His comics runs have also included stunts as a stunt man and actor, so Slattery’s addition to the show points towards something that could spoof Hollywood.

James Gunn had Nathan Fillion lined up to cameo as the character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ (in a series of film festival posters featuring Williams’ work) but that scene ultimately didn’t make the final cut of the movie.

Marvel, naturally, is not commenting on the Slattery news, but we’re happy to see Kingsley will have the chance to bring the character back once more. Will ‘Shang-Chi’s Morris have a cameo? Only time will tell.

Kingsley will next crop up in ‘Dalíland’ and Netflix’s ‘The School for Good and Evil’.

As for Cretton, the ‘Wonder Man’ show is just one project he has cooking away under his deal with Marvel. He’s also on to direct a ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel and recently scored an even bigger job, making ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.

  • Destin Daniel Cretton to Direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

Marvel Studios' 'Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.'
Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.’

Marvel appears to be wasting no time putting the creative pieces in place now that it has announced plans for the next two “Phases” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following the Disney-owned Studio’s big San Diego Comic-Con presentation this past weekend, news arrives that ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ director Destin Daniel Cretton will take the reins for ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’, currently due in theaters on May 2nd, 2025.

Little is known about ‘The Kang Dynasty’ yet beyond that title, release date and now, director. But the title clearly points to a clash with Multiverse-spanning villain Kang (Jonathan Majors), a variant of whom was introduced in last year’s MCU series ‘Loki’.

Kang – or versions of him, at least – is scheduled to pop back up again in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, due in theaters on February 17th next year. He’ll be a threat throughout much of the future movies, since Phases 4 (which is already underway, and ends with November 11’th’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), 5 and 6 together represent ‘The Multiverse Saga’.

    aXFp9rDtBnSVoN1v6TNuF7

Together with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ (planned for theaters on November 7th, 2025), the movie will wrap Phase 6 and cap off the next saga. There is no indication yet as to who will direct ‘Secret Wars’.

    Marvel Studios' 'Avengers: Secret Wars.'

As for who might be representing the heroic side of the story once ‘The Kang Dynasty’ rolls around is still up in the air at this point and depends on which of the remaining classic characters (such as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Anthony Mackie‘s Captain America) are utilized alongside the younger likes of Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and, likely America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) introduced in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

    0hrMmXt2gI633ZOCaR36h7

We’d be shocked if Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu wasn’t back, and given their long working relationship, we firmly expect to see Brie Larson as Captain Marvel (she popped up in a post-credits scene for ‘Shang-Chi’).

While some had speculated that Marvel might look to bring ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo back for the next ‘Avengers’ movies, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has gone on record as saying they’re not involved – and the sibling filmmakers are busy with their own projects anyway, such as expanding upon Netflix movie ‘The Gray Man’.

Cretton though, sounds like a solid pair of hands for an ‘Avengers’ outing – he proved he could handle quieter character beats, drama and comedy, plus worked well with the effects teams to deliver some spectacle.

Before he made a splash with ‘Shang-Chi’, Cretton was better known for his indie fare, including ‘Short Term 12’, ‘The Glass Castle’ and ‘Just Mercy’. He’s currently developing or working on a few other projects, including series ‘American Born Chinese’ for Disney+ and a ‘Wonder Man’ show under his Marvel deal.
