  • 9 Things to Expect in the Epic ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’ Crossover Event

The lines between “Arrow” and “The Flash” have blurred before, but this week’s CW crossover event is bigger, bolder, and better integrated than ever.

Moviefone previewed the massive superhero merger, which sets the stage for the network’s upcoming spinoff “Legends of Tomorrow” and will air over two nights this week. The story follows Teams Flash and Arrow as they try to protect two new heroes, Hawkgirl and Hawkman, from a brand new villain in Vandal Savage.

According to the showrunners who answered questions after the screening, putting it all together was one hell of a challenge.

“I don’t think its possible to overstate the incredible amount of difficulty it was for just about everyone involved,” Marc Guggenheim, executive producer of “Arrow” and “Legends of Tomorrow” told Moviefone.

“We love that kind of challenge,” Greg Berlanti, co-creator of all three series, added. “You can try and guess how large it’s going to be, but you don’t really know until you’re in it.”

“It was an acting marathon,” Falk Hentschel, who makes his first appearance Tuesday as Hawkman, said.

In the end, everyone’s hard work on “The Flash”/”Arrow”/”Legends of Tomorrow” crossover event paid off. The action in the two-part episode is riveting, the effects are spectacular, and the danger is palpable. There are tears, laughs, and oh so many sets of sprouting wings. Here are nine things to look forward to when you watch the episodes, titled “Legends of Today” and “Legends of Yesterday,” respectively.

    1. Vandal Savage is a timeless, totally cool villain.
Move over, Damien Darhk -– there’s a new magical badass in town.

Vandal Savage (Casper Crump), an immortal, knife-wielding assassin, shows up in Central City hot on the trail of Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) new girlfriend Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renée). When Team Flarrow tries to shelter Kendra from Vandal’s 4,000 year old storm, they get more than they bargained for. Far more than competent villain, he is also a dryly funny dude who won’t hesitate to boast about prior encounters with folks like Harry Houdini and Robin Hood. Did we mention he’s destined to become the main bad guy on “Legends?”

    2. Hawkman and Hawkgirl have arrived!
Vandal Savage isn’t the only “Legends of Tomorrow” mainstay introduced on this week’s two-parter. We also get the debut of Carter (Falk Hentschel), aka Hawkman, as well as Kendra’s first emergence as Hawkgirl. What’s their relationship like?

“They come as a team,” Hentschel explained. “In my mind they’re like a bickering old couple. He’s gone through 4,000 years of loving her and having him loving him back… but he’s terrified always of losing her.”

Two new superheroes also means two new superhero costumes. Putting on Hawkman’s outfit was “like a dream come true,” Hentschel revealed. “It was awesome.” But sadly that means…

    3. Cisco finds himself neck deep in an Ancient Egyptian love triangle.
“The Flash” hasn’t had a bonafide love triangle since Eddie was killed off at the end of last season, but all of that changes when Hawkman crashes the party and gets between Kendra and Cisco, who had quietly become the show’s cutest couple. We won’t spoil what happens, but considering Kendra and Carter have been soul mates for over 4,000 years and will soon be flying off to join “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” it’s safe to say Cisco is fighting an uphill battle.

    4. The crossover will give us unexpected character pairings.
One of the best things about these crossovers is that they allow the showrunners to mix and match characters who don’t often share the screen. Barry and Felicity, for example, haven’t interacted much since their Season 1 date, but the crossover reunites them and allows fans to see how their relationship has evolved after so much time apart.

    5. And Team Arrow’s perfect reaction to the existence of a multiverse.
Another natural consequence of these intertwining stories is an exchange of information between Team Arrow and Team Flash, as the two groups spend time catching each other up on what they’ve been doing. Watching old friends reminisce might not be entertaining in real life, but when you’re dealing with superheroes, magical villains, and alternate dimensions it actually makes for great TV. Can you guess which character learned about the multiverse then immediately wondered whether Oliver’s doppelganger might be potbellied and bald?

    6. There will be double the funny.
“The Flash” has relied heavily upon comedy since its inception and more recently “Arrow” has made strides along those lines, too. So, it shouldn’t come as much surprise that this week’s two-parter is filled with jokes -– and these are some of the funniest yet. From Cisco trying to rename one of the Team Arrow heroes to Oliver complaining about how everything looks brighter in Central City, the humor (and meta-humor) is on point.

    7. And pop-culture references aplenty (even an “Avengers” one!).
By now “Flash” fans know Cisco has never been one to shy away from a good pop-culture reference, but this week he’s joined by Felicity and even Thea as they name drop more movies and TV shows than ever before. From Indiana Jones to “Highlander” to “Game of Thrones” to “Lord of the Rings,” they pay homage to all the classics, new and old. Most shocking is a perfectly timed “Avengers: Age of Ultron” shout-out, which seemingly serves as proof that Marvel movies do indeed exist in this version of the DC universe.

    8. Oliver will be asked to keep a secret from Felicity, and will eventually find comfort in the arms of another.
Green Arrow has been all about honesty and transparency this season, so when an unexpected character asks him to keep a secret from everyone, including his lady love Felicity, his resolve is put to the test. What does he do? We’re not going to ruin that surprise for you, but we will say that he’s lucky to be surrounded by so many supportive friends and family. One of them even gives him the most awkward hug ever during the episode, which made us laugh out loud.

    9. The mother of all flashbacks.
“Arrow” is no stranger to exotic flashbacks, but this week takes us further back and perhaps farther away than we’ve ever gone before. If you’ve seen the trailer you probably noticed Hawkgirl, Hawkman, and Vandal Savage butting heads in Ancient Egypt, where their sad and twisted story begins. The production design for the flashbacks is exceptional.

That’s great news considering time travel and period-set stories may be a central component of “Legends of Tomorrow.”

“Part of the fun of ‘Legends’ is that it takes place all throughout history, future, and past.” Guggenheim said.

The CW crossover event begins Tuesday at 8 p.m. with “The Flash” and concludes on Wednesday at 8 p.m. with “Arrow.”

  • ‘Flash’ EP and Danielle Panabaker Talk Firestorm 2.0, Killer Frost, and More

the flash season 2 firestorm previewIf you’ve seen trailers for Tuesday’s all new episode of The CW’s “The Flash,” then you already know the flame-spewing superhero Firestorm is getting a sizzling makeover.

When Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) falls ill, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his S.T.A.R. Labs scientists must find a replacement for his metahuman partner Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), who died last season saving the city.

After a screening of the flame-filled, emotionally charged episode -– titled “The Fury of Firestorm” –- Moviefone spoke to “Flash” co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg and star Arrow” crossover, and the return of everyone’s favorite villain -– Grodd.

    1. Firestorm 2.0 Will Be Hilarious
When Ronnie died saving Central City, he left behind a grieving bride in Snow and an incomplete superhero in Dr. Stein. This week, Stein’s needs are more pressing as his health fails him and we learn he must “merge” with another metahuman to survive. Flash and friends sift through several candidates to replace Ronnie, including an ambitious scientist Henry Hewitt (Demore Barnes) and a former athlete Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh).

Mild spoiler alert that has already been widely reported: Jax will win the job.

Dr. Stein and Jax have zero in common, but as Kreisberg explains, that’s by design. Juxtaposing the “radically different” characters “leaves more room for comedy with the Firestorm character,” he said. Now we can look forward to more quip-based humor from Firestorm, especially after the character migrates over to The CW’s upcoming spinoff “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”

    2. What Does Ronnie Getting Replaced Mean for Caitlin?
Dr. Snow is a focal point of Tuesday’s episode because the search for a new Firestorm is essentially a quest to close the book on Ronnie. As sad as that sounds, Panabaker believes it could be an important step forward for her character.

“What’s especially hard for Caitlin, and maybe ultimately cathartic about this experience, is that she’s connected to Stein and she cares deeply about him because he is her last connection to Ronnie,” she explained. “So she’s particularly invested in taking care of Stein… and making sure his next partner is… just as good if not better than Ronnie.”

“This was really the episode where [Caitlin] kind of dealt with [Ronnie’s death]. She can grieve through wanting to protect her dead husband’s co-superhero,” Kreisberg added. “This episode makes me cry.”

    3. Does This Have Anything to Do With Her Killer Frost Transition?
Panabaker owned the Internet last week after The CW revealed the first image of her playing the villain Killer Frost. But clearly something has to happen for Dr. Snow to become a cold-hearted baddie, because right now she’s one of “The Flash’s” warmest characters (all puns intended).

So, will she suffer another tragedy? Is Killer Frost actually Caitlin Snow’s doppelganger from the alternate universe that has come into play this season? Universe? Or is there some other explanation? Kreisberg wouldn’t say for certain, but he did imply that he and co-showrunner Greg Berlanti has been laying a foundation for Killer Frost’s arc for quite some time:

“We knew we [the show was] going to be on for a few years, [so] we were able to play the slow con on some of these things,” Kreisberg said. “It’s only in hindsight that you look back and go, ‘Oh, that thing in episode whatever from early Season 2, that tied into the thing that led into the other thing.”

    Hmmm. Mystery still unsolved.

    4. Dr. Stein Gets a Weird ‘Vibe’ From Cisco
Last season Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdez) was revealed to be Vibe, a metahuman who sees visions of alternate universes. He has been trying to hide his powers from Barry and Dr. Snow, but on Tuesday’s episode Dr. Stein discovers his big secret and advises Cisco to share it with the group. But will he listen?

“[Cisco] has seen what happens to the other metahumans,” Kreisberg said. “Good or bad intentions, they all go nuts and get locked up. So Cisco is really scared.”

Furthermore, Cisco must deal with his disappointment over the nature of his vague powers: “It’s not like he woke up and can fly,” Kreisberg said. “So he feels like he drew the short straw. ‘Barry gets super-speed, Ronnie gets to fly, and I get these blinding headache and nightmare visions of people being killed?’ It’s not, at first blush, the most heroic way to step into the world.”

    5. Looking Ahead… Is Jaytlin Really a Thing?
Dr. Snow’s heart was broken after Ronnie sacrificed himself at the end of last season, but over six months have passed since his heroic death and already we’re seeing signs that she may soon be ready to move on. We’ve seen sparks between her and newcomer/alternate universe Flash Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) – could there be a legitimate romance in their future? All signs point to yes.

“Obviously there’s something going on there,” Kreisberg said.

Panabaker is shipping Jaytlin, too: “He’s a fellow science nerd. What could be better for Caitlin?”

    6. The Mother of All ‘Arrow’/’Flash’ Crossovers Is Coming
When “Arrow” and “The Flash” crossover this winter, they won’t just be trading characters for a week, they’ll be setting the stage for “Legends of Tomorrow.”

Panabaker revealed that, because of the new show, this season’s crossover episodes would be “exponentially bigger.” Kreisberg agreed: “We looked back and thought those ‘Flash’/’Arrow’ episodes were the biggest things we’d ever done, but now we have more heroes, more villains, more mouths to feed – it’s really exciting.”

It won’t just be the character pool that changes, either -– fans can also expect a shift in tone. “The ‘Flash’ episode plays more like an episode of ‘Arrow,’ and the ‘Arrow’ episode plays more like an episode of ‘Flash,’” Kreisberg added.

    7. Grodd’s Return: Caitlin Will Be His Fay Wray
Gorilla Grodd, a fan favorite villain from “The Flash’s” freshman season, is coming back this year in a big way. According to Kreisberg and Panabaker, the telepathic primate’s return may inspire comparisons to the 1933 film “King Kong“.

“Caitlin plays [‘King Kong’ starlet] Fay Wray to Grodd’s Kong,” he explained.

“[Grodd] has some unfinished business with her,” Panabaker added.

    8. The Big Regret Form Season One
“The Flash” scored big with both audiences and critics last season, but Kreisberg admitted there’s still one thing he wishes he could go back and change: “The one thing we didn’t do last year on ‘ The Flash,’ and I keep kicking myself for it, is when Oliver got exposed as the Arrow. There was no mention of Flash for all those episodes about everything Oliver Queen was going through,” he said. “For me, it’s like they’re all friends, they all know each other’s secret identities, and they all care for each other – you’d think somebody would’ve said something about it.”

However, this season the writers have been more vigilant about “honoring the fact that they’re all in each other’s life.” “That’s why we acknowledged Oliver’s change into Green Arrow on ‘The Flash,’” he said.

    9. Batman Who?
Green Arrow and the Flash are a part of the Justice League, a crime-fighting super group that includes Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. DC Comics fans are naturally fond of speculating when and where those other big named heroes might rear their heads, but Kreisberg says the writers aren’t focused on shoehorning them into their shows.

“We’ve gotten to do Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, the League of Assassins, Deathstroke, Flash, Killer Frost, and Vibe; now we’re doing ‘Legends’ and Rip Hunter; we have Constantine coming on to ‘Arrow’; and we have ‘Supergirl.’” he said with a laugh. “So it’s not like we’re sitting there saying, ‘God dammit, why won’t they give us Batman?’”

In fact, he said the writers prefer developing lesser-known characters: “It’s a lot more fun to show people that [viewers] haven’t constantly seen.”

“The Flash” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

  • ‘Arrow’ Showrunners Reveal How Oliver Queen Suddenly Became Hilarious

When “Arrow” kicks off its new season Wednesday, fans will undoubtedly notice that Star City’s crime-fighting archer has turned over a brand new leaf — an emerald one, to be precise.

Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) spent the first three seasons of his successful CW series battling his inner demons by shooting holes in them with arrows, but after screening the superb Season 4 premiere, Moviefone is happy to report our hero has finally learned healthier ways to cope.

Last season ended with Ollie jumping into a convertible with his ladylove Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) as the two of them quite literally took the long and windy road toward happily ever after. A few months have passed by the time Season 4 picks up, but Oliver’s shiny new disposition still holds strong. He eventually winds his way back to Star City, of course, but not before rebranding himself as the Green Arrow, complete with his greenest suit yet.

Oliver is “trying to be more of an inspiration and less of the judge, jury, and executioner we’ve seen in the past,” Wendy Mericle, “Arrow’s” newly anointed co-showrunner, explained after a screening of the premiere episode.

But Oliver’s sunny new disposition isn’t the only big change in store. From a fantastically funny new villain to a drastic increase in metahuman and mystical occurrences, here are a few more things to expect from Wednesday’s game-changing “Arrow” opener and the season ahead:

Oliver Is Funny Ha Ha, and the Tone Is Light
The “Arrow” return is filled with twists and turns aplenty, but for our money the biggest shocker is the drastic shift in tone. Whereas last season was dark and gritty (think “The Wire,” Nirvana, or Picasso’s Blue Period), this one seems light and playful (think “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” Weezer, or Bob Ross).

Specifically, the show is hilariously funny at times. Perhaps funnier than it has ever been. Sure, Felicity has always been good at cracking wise, but for the first time Speedy, Diggle, and Oliver — yes, that Oliver -– are also joining in on the fun.

“It’s coming from where Oliver is as a character,” explained Mericle. “He’s happier now. He’s in love with Felicity. He’s no longer the post-traumatic stress disorder suffering soldier he was in the first three seasons.”

Did we mention the new villain is hilarious, too? Speaking of which…

New Blood, Bad Blood, Nerd Blood
Two new recurring characters will cross paths with Team Arrow this season: Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), Season 4’s unapologetically evil “Big Bad,” and Mr. Terrific (Echo Kellum), a brand new good guy who eventually befriends Felicity. Of the two, only Damien appears on Wednesday’s episode. Revealing the “Big Bad” in the season premiere is actually a new approach for showrunners. “One of the things we really wanted to explore this year was seeing a Big Bad from the get go and giving him a lot of room to play,” Mericle said.

The approach paid off, with McDonough absolutely stealing every scene in which he appears. “There’s a real glimmer in his eye whenever he’s putting the screws to somebody,” co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim explained. “It is something we haven’t seen on the show before.”

Mr. Terrific, meanwhile, will eventually fill a Ray Palmer-shaped hole in the hearts of the Scooby Gang. From the sound of it, he won’t be cracking skulls in the street with Oliver, John Diggle (David Ramsey), Black Canary (Katie Cassidy), and Speedy (Willa Holland), but will instead stay glued to the computers in Team Arrow’s lair, which means he and Felicity will have a lot of opportunity to interact.

Kellum’s character “has a strong tech background and is somebody for Felicity to talk to, to have scenes with,” Mericle revealed. “It’s very magical. They are great together.” But their new relationship isn’t the only magic in store this season…

    Magical Mystical Tour
“Arrow” dabbled in the unexplained last season with the growing inclusion of super-powered metahumans and the reanimating waters of the Lazarus Pit, but that wasn’t always the case. There was a time when The CW series featured the most realistic superheroes around. But that was before Barry Allen came a-knocking.

“We started out with the clear intention of doing a grounded show: no superheroes, no metahumans, no powers, no magic,” Guggenheim said. “But then Warner Bros. and The CW said they really wanted us to spinoff Flash — so we said, ‘Okay, I guess we’re doing superpowers now!’”

This season, the showrunners have doubled down on the mysticism with Damien Darhk, who promises to be “Arrow’s” most magically delicious character yet. The show’s previous villains, like Slade Wilson, Malcolm Merlyn, and Ra’s al Ghul, were mostly super-charged fighters, but Darhk is different species of evil. He isn’t physically imposing and he doesn’t need to be, as he can wave away arrows with his hand and drain the life out of a man with one touch.

Relying heavily upon sorcery and superpowers is, of course, a gamble, but Guggenheim believes his show can stay grounded “as long as the characters’ reactions are realistic.” “If they react how we would react, it makes the fantastical less fantastic,” he added.

“Arrow” returns to The CW for Season 4 on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

  • 21 Best TV Shows Based on Comic Books, Ranked by Awesomeness

    %Slideshow-325519%
Comic books are kind of a big deal.

No longer for just the neck-bearded crowd at Comic-Con, comics have become mainstream on both the big and small screen. Studios are constantly searching for intellectual property that can get them the next “Walking Dead.” The genre has a very deep bench of hits and misses — both animated and live-action — and there are more shows based on comics on the air now than ever before.

With “The Flash” and “Arrow” returning with new seasons, we’ve decided to rank and file the best TV series based on comic books — ranked by story quality, rewatchability, and, you know, overall awesomeness.

  • 6 Things You Need to Know About ‘Arrow’ Season 4

The fourth season of “Arrow” (which premieres October 7 on The CW) is all about resurrection as Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) reinvents his superhero persona, Thea (Willa Holland) deals with the after-effects of The Lazarus Pit, and a character from a canceled TV show is back to help in resurrecting someone else.

Here are six things you need to know about the new season of “Arrow.”

    1. Arrow Is Dead! Long Live the New Arrow!
Everyone thinks Arrow was Roy (Colton Haynes) and Oliver Queen is not about to resurrect his alter ego. As Amell told TV Line. “Roy outed himself as the Arrow, so if I were to recreate the suit and go out, it would undo all of the sacrifice that he made. So the Arrow persona, for better or for worse, it can’t exist anymore.” However, Queen (as Green Arrow?) is back with a bitchin’ new outfit because he’s still got a city to save. He also has a spiffy new lair to accommodate the growing Team Arrow, per EW.

    2. There’s a New Bad Guy in Town
Neal McDonough (“Public Morals,” “Justified”) is playing Damien Darhk, who producers tell TV Line, isa mysterious and sophisticated villain, and an adversary of the late Ra’s Al Ghul. Now the leader of his own clandestine group, this cunning foe will prove to be one of the Arrow’s greatest challenges.” As executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW, “He’s really pure evil, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his ends.” What are his powers? Guggenheim, won’t say exactly, telling TVLine, “He can definitely kick your ass, but he can do it in a different way than Arrow’s other foes.

    3. Constantine, Back From the Dead!
Matt Ryan will reprise his role as the trench-coated, chain-smoking exorcist from NBC’s short-lived “Constantine” for one episode, CW announced at the Television Critics Association in August. He’ll appear in the fifth episode of the show’s fourth season, titled “Haunted,” in which he provides critical “critical support to Oliver when arrows aren’t enough,” EW reports.

    4. Olicity 4Eva!
Now that Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Oliver have finally gotten together, you’ll be seeing a lot happier, relaxed Oliver. Says Guggenheim to EW, “Oliver’s got a new outlook on life…We played him as a guy who was returning home from war with PTSD for the first three years. Now he’s put those demons to rest, or so he thinks, and there’s a lightness to him as a result of all the things he learned last year.”

    5. Diggle and Arrow Make Up
“Their reconciliation, how they get there, is going to be a bumpy ride. It’s not going to be fully resolved,” executive producer Wendy Mericle tells TVLine. Diggle (David Ramsay) also gets a new crime-fighting look. Not everyone was digging Digs’ new helmet though, with fans thinking it looked too much like Magneto. “I know there’s a lot of criticism that it looks like the Magneto helmet. But by the time you see Diggle in action –- we also get into what the helmet can do -– you won’t be thinking of the X-Men at all,” he told TV Guide.

    6. Thea Is Now the Troubled Superhero
With Oliver temporarily out of the picture, his little sister has donned a hood and mask of her own as arrow-slinging avenger Speedy. Amell tweeted that the reaction to the premiere will be “What’s wrong Speedy?” since Thea’s not the same person after dying and being brought back to life.

  • Here’s Your First Look at Hawkman & Hawkgirl in ‘Legends of Tomorrow’

hawkman, hawkgirl, dc, legends of tomorrowDC has released the first image of Hawkman and Hawkgirl from its upcoming “Arrow” and “The Flash” spinoff, “Legends of Tomorrow,” and the characters look just as cool as you’d hoped.

The photo, featuring newcomer actress Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) and actor Falk Hentschel as Carter Hall (Hawkman), shows off the two heroes’ sleek leather costumes and funky bird-like masks, which evoke both a sense of mystery and a hint of whimsy — exactly what a comic book adaptation should do. But don’t be fooled by Hawkgirl’s small smile on display here: this twosome is tough, and ready to spring into action. (Hawkman’s mace is certainly menacing.)

Here’s the official synopsis for the series, per the DC Comics site:

With powers derived from the ancient Egyptian hawk god, Horus, Kendra and Carter are destined to reincarnate through time as winged, helmeted warriors. On DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Hawkgirl and Hawkman will fight alongside the Atom, Firestorm, White Canary, Captain Cold and Heat Wave against the immortal Vandal Savage. Look for them to initially debut in this season’s Arrow and The Flash crossover episode before moving on to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

  • Ciara Renee to Play Hawkgirl in ‘The Flash’ & ‘Arrow’ Spinoff

The CW’s developing “The Flash” and “Arrow” spinoff has added a new leading lady.

Deadline reports that Ciara Renee will play Hawkgirl — whose real name is Kendra Saunders — in the still-untitled series, which will bring together the casts of the above superhero series as well as some new characters. Per the trade:

In the new series, Saunders is a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.

… Renée joins Brandon Routh (Arrow’s Ray Palmer/The Atom), Wentworth Miller (The Flash’s Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (The Flash’s Mick Rory/Heat Wave), Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein) and Caity Lotz whose role is still TBD.

Renee, a relative newcomer, is currently best-known for her work on Broadway, where she’s appeared in shows including “Pippin” and “Big Fish.” She also made a guest turn on “Law & Order: SVU” last fall.

According to Deadline, the spinoff is still looking to cast three lead roles — two males and a female — of DC superheroes that have never been portrayed on television before (Hawkgirl made a previous appearance on The WB’s “Smallville”). Stay tuned to see who else will join Renee in the series.
