Things go bump in the night, but in “Midsommar,” even greater evils await in the bright daylight.

The new horror movie from “Hereditary” director Ari Aster doesn’t hide its monsters in the shadows; they exist in the sun-kissed, flower-strewn beauty of a summer festival in Sweden.

In what Aster has described as a breakup movie, Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor) are a young American couple whose relationship is crumbling. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani joins Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village.

But what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into a violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

“It’s very macabre,” Aster told fans earlier this year. “But people shouldn’t go in expecting ‘Hereditary.’ It’s a ‘Wizard of Oz’ for perverts.”

“Midsommar” opens in theaters July 3.

The upcoming horror film “Midsommar” is coming to theaters sooner than originally scheduled.

A24 has moved the Ari Aster-directed movie’s release date to July 3, pushing it up more than a month from its Aug. 9 date, Deadline reports. That means some early summer scares for horror fans. The film is Aster’s follow-up to the chilling “Hereditary.”

While the footage released so far looks bright and flowery at first, the plot is absolutely not. The story follows a woman named Dani (Florence Pugh) as she travels to a small Swedish village with her boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), for a nine-day festival that only takes place every 90 years. As she spends time there, she realizes there is very something dark and dangerous going on.

Aster wrote the script in addition to directing. The film’s cast also includes William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter, Archie Madekwe, and Ellora Torchia.

“Midsommar” opens July 3, so update your calendar accordingly.

The mastermind behind “Hereditary” is here to scare the living daylights out of you.

Writer and director Ari Aster already stunned us with his evil genius with last year’s horror hit. Now he’s back with “Midsommar,” and while the trailer looks like sunshine and flowers, something dark and terrifying is lurking beneath.

Described as a “Scandinavian folk horror” tale, the movie follows a couple (Florence Pugh, Jack Raynor) visiting a summer festival in rural Sweden. But what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into a violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

The trailer’s initial dreamy, sunlit, colorful vibe provides a stark contrast to the disturbing imagery seen later, like a bear with its guts hanging out.

    “Midsommar” opens August 9.
