  • ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ has Undergone More Reshoots

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ already had some pressure attached to it. As the sequel to 2018’s ‘Aquaman’ it had to live up to an original movie that earned more than $1.1 billion.

Which for someone like director James Wan, who is also responsible for giant horror franchises such as the ‘Saw’ films and particularly the ‘Conjuring’ franchise, might not be quite as daunting as for others.

But there were lots of other factors in play around the new movie –– it was greenlit by a former Warner Bros./DC regime (to be specific, Toby Emmerich and Walter Hamada) back when the DC Extended Universe originated by movies such as ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Justice League’ was still a going concern and Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa was one of its big breakout stars.

But with principal photography completed in January 2022, the rough waters for the movie were just beginning to swirl.

What happened with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’?

According to a new story in The Hollywood Reporter, the movie started to face issues almost immediately. The initial test screenings for the movie indicated that audiences weren’t reacting well to the movie.

The studio authorized two rounds of reshoots, but it appears that nothing produced was helping the test scores. Incoming Warner Bros. bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy got involved, and Abdy led a new cut, but that tested even less successfully.

Yet with a lot invested in the movie, Warners kept moving on, authorizing an unprecedented third round of reshoots –– which reportedly went very well, Wan able to complete what was needed in less time than planned.

A big issue for the film’s process were several delays, including work traffic jams at VFX companies requiring that ‘The Lost Kingdom’ jump around the schedules.

Not helping matters was a killer combo of changing fortunes for DC movies –– Hamada would be gone before the movie ever saw screens and DC Studios changed hands to James Gunn and Peter Safran.

But both were committed to helping Aquaman keep swimming; Safran in particular because he’s a producer on the film.

And then, there’s the Batman issue.

    How does Batman fit in?

While the movie largely sees Momoa’s Arthur Curry struggling with a new threat to his underwater kingdom (one that will force him to team up with half-brother and former rival Orm, played by Patrick Wilson), there was supposed to be a cameo from Batman.

But which Bruce Wayne? When ‘The Flash’ looked to be kickstarting a universe where Michael Keaton’s Bruce is sort of a Nick Fury-style connective character between other heroes, a cameo for his Batman was filmed. When those plans changed, Ben Affleck’s Wayne was subbed in (that reshoot was “accidentally” revealed by Momoa to a studio tour group).

And now? ‘The Flash’ is a flop and other Keaton-featuring projects such as ‘Batgirl’ have been shelved. Gunn and Safran are reportedly nervous about connecting the film to a movie universe that is effectively over or making promises about crossovers that may never come to pass now that Gunn has his own big plans for the future.

The mood is still positive around ‘The Lost Kingdom’, though, but we’ll see how it performs when it lands in theaters on December 20th.

  • James Gunn Says He Has a 10-year plan for DC Studios

After a lengthy search to find the creative and business brains the company needed to run the oft-troubled DC movies, TV and games section, Warner Bros. Discovery raised eyebrows when it appointed director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran to run what will now be known as DC Studios.

Now, speaking with WBD CEO David Zaslav in a virtual town hall, the new co-chiefs (who started the job on November 1st) started to outline what they’re working on.

“This was such a unique opportunity to tell one great overarching story”, said Safran, who is known for producing ‘Shazam!’ and ‘Aquaman’ alongside the ‘Conjuring’ films. “One beautiful big story across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation.”

“The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that,” said Gunn. “We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight- to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.”

The pair replaced Walter Hamada, who had run DC Films for four years. The impression had been of a company in chaos – between changes in studio management, movies with little to no connection – or drama when someone such as Zack Snyder did offer some sort of vision to tie together several heroes. Not to mention mixed box office results.

Gunn’s recruitment remains something of a surprise, since he has really only been known for making movies, though he has also been involved with helping to guide the Marvel Cinematic Universe while working with Kevin Feige on the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies and beyond. He never indicated he might want to hold a similar position, though he certainly brings creative knowledge to the table, while Safran handles the business side of things (and is also a movie fan).

And the idea of a big plan for the studio’s DC output going forward certainly has echoes of what Marvel has done for Disney, though with the benefit of building slowly. Previous DC attempts have looked to replicate it at such speed, nothing quite worked out.

Gunn also offered praise for Zaslav at the meeting: “I know that you are doing all this because you love these characters, too, and you love the possibility, and the hope that they represent and that has been clear to us from the beginning. We would have never considered this if that wasn’t the case, so, thank you.”

It’s an attitude that some other filmmakers may not share, since Zaslav’s brief tenure in charge so far has seen a raft of cost-cutting measures, with movies and TV shows cancelled or scrapped, including ‘Batgirl’.

  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to Play ‘Wonder Man’

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in 2021’s ‘Candyman.’

Though he’s been best known for playing two DC Comics characters – Dr. Manhattan in the HBO series ‘Watchmen’ (to Emmy-winning effect) and Black Manta in ‘Aquaman’, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is headed across the comic book border to Marvel, signing on to star in ‘Wonder Man’, a new series in development at Disney+.

The series has ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ director Destin Daniel Cretton aboard as executive producer (and to direct at least some, if not all the episodes) and ‘Hawkeye’ veteran Andrew Guest serving as head writer.

In August, we learned that Ben Kingsley will also show up in the series as Trevor Slattery. The character, a bumbling actor originally hired to play a version of villain the Mandarin for ‘Iron Man 3’, further showed up in a Marvel One-Shot and then returned for Cretton’s ‘Shang-Chi’.

A Wonder Man primer for those who may not know the slightly obscure character: he was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first arrived on Marvel’s pages in ‘Avengers #9’, which was published in 1964. The character’s real name is Simon Williams, son of a rich industrialist whose company runs into trouble after competition from Tony Stark.

Angered by how Stark has affected his family, Williams accepts an offer from Baron Zemo that grants him super strength and durability. He battles the Avengers several times, before joining them.

His comics runs have also included stunts as a stunt man and actor, so Slattery’s addition to the show points towards something that could spoof Hollywood.

James Gunn had Nathan Fillion lined up to cameo as the character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ (in a series of film festival posters featuring Williams’ work) but that scene ultimately didn’t make the final cut of the movie.

Deadline’s story on Abdul-Mateen’s casting offers no details on how the MCU version of the character will adapt the comic book backstory, but we’d imagine there will be some changes along the way. Most notably, with Tony Stark dead, there will be little crossover on that front.

Though Stark tech successor Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, will have been introduced by this point in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and her own Disney+ series, so perhaps there will be some overlap).

Abdul-Mateen is a busy, in demand actor who last showed up in Michael Bay’s ‘Ambulance’. He’ll be back as Black Manta for James Wan’s superhero sequel ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, currently scheduled to swim into theaters on December 25th next year.

There are also a few other projects in the works, including TV drama ‘The Scent of Burnt Flowers’ and potential movie ‘I Helped Destroy People’, which he’ll also produce.

Looks like the Bat’s out of the bag.

Or at the very least the Bruce Wayne, as a new Instagram video from ‘Aquaman’ star Jason Momoa revealed Warner Bros. set tour fans learning that Ben Affleck will show up in the sequel, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’.

The funny Instagram video shows Momoa greeting fans who are on a tour tram outside the stage at Warner Bros. where the ‘Lost Kingdom’ team have been shooting additional footage. Parked outside the stage is a trailer with a less-than-subtle ‘B.A.’ on the door.

“Well, it’s not a f*****’ secret any more is it?” chuckles Momoa, before adding, “Sorry children. That’s what happens, Warner Brothers, when you walk out of your set, and there’s your fans.”

He then walks over to the trailer, laughing “Well, we tried to keep it a secret.” There’s a brief glimpse of Affleck in his trailer before Momoa swerves away. He also posted a couple of pictures of the pair larking around in a room at the studio.

Of course, it could all be a put-up, and organized as part of the build-up to the superhero sequel’s arrival next year, but Momoa’s genuine surprise and laughter makes us think it’s real. And who doesn’t love Jason Momoa with a fit of the giggles?

Bruce Wayne and Arthur Curry – Aquaman’s actual name – shared the screen previously in both versions of ‘Justice League’, the 2017 theatrical version and Zack Snyder’s extended cut, which arrived on HBO Max in 2021.

How Bruce factors into the new movie remains to be seen, but we do know that ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will take the sea hero to the titular Lost Kingdom, a part of the Atlantean Empire lost to history after the Atlanteans fell into ruin and became an underwater people.

The cast also includes the returning likes of Amber Heard as Mera, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Patrick Wilson as the villainous Ocean Master (though he and Arthur appear to be working together this time, however unwillingly) and Temuera Morrison as Aquaman’s father, Tom Curry.

Yahya Abdul Mateen-II is also back as Black Manta, while ‘Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbæk also joined the cast in an undisclosed part.

James Wan, who guided the first film to more than $1 billion at the box office, is back directing again, working from a script by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will swim into theaters on March 17th next year.

In addition to his return to the undersea realms, Momoa has been busy finishing the final season of dystopian Apple TV+ series ‘See’ and joining the latest ‘Fast & Furious’ installment, ‘Fast X’, itself due in theaters on May 19th, 2023.

  • Jason Momoa in Talks for ‘Minecraft’ Movie

    Jason Momoa at Oscars

With ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ still racing away with golden box office rings, studios are all scrambling to jump back on the video game movie adaptation bandwagon – even though it spent years looking like a rickety cart with the wheels falling off.

But no longer! Thanks to ‘Sonic’ and ‘Uncharted’ the heat is being turned back up on projects squatting across studio burners and ‘Minecraft’, which Warner Bros. has had simmering away for years, is one example.

Jason Momoa, already a hot property for the studio thanks to the success of ‘Aquaman’ (and to a lesser extent, his presence in the hefty cast of ‘Dune’), is now in talks to take the lead role in the ‘Minecraft’ movie. And in the director’s chair? The more surprising choice of ‘Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.

If you’re not in the game’s target audience, allow us to brief you on the basics… The game, from Swedish developer Mojang AB, allows you to create and shape an entire world, and by 2014 had sold more than 35 million copies across PCs, the Xbox 360, and mobile platforms. Much like with Lego, the only stories here are those created by users, who can choose whether to explore, create or fight with each other. There are also nocturnal monsters stalking the place, which you must deal with. It reached 100 million users just a few years after launch and helping spark Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Since then, it hasn’t been quite as much in the pop cultural zeitgeist (the likes of ‘Fortnite’ have tended to dominate), but it’s recognizable intellectual property, and, linked to a known name like Momoa, it’s the sort of the concept studios will grab for when times are good.

    Minecraft game
    Minecraft game from Mojang Studios.

Around the time of the Microsoft purchase, Warners entered talks with prolific producer and director Shawn Levy, but his packed scheduled and slow development on the movie meant he never ended up in the director’s chair.

After Levy came ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ co-creator and self-avowed ‘Minecraft’ fan Rob McElhenney was next in line as director when the movie was still being planned as an animated release. He, like Levy, appears to have been the victim of scheduling, and has focused his video game-loving energies on co-creating and starring in Apple TV+’s ‘Mythic Quest’ series.

With ‘Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs sticking around for script work, the movie then targeted Steve Carell as a potential star but… well, given what the main thrust of this story is, you know what happened.

The most recent time that ‘Minecraft’ pinged the news radar, it was with ‘Raising Victor Vargas’ Peter Sollett writing and directing.

Now, though – assuming it happens – we have The Ankler reporting that Momoa and Hess are the chosen duo to launch what Warners is hoping could become a franchise as success as, say, ‘The Lego Movie’ universe (especially since that has since headed to Universal).

Hess is the wildcard here; he’s always been more about his own movies than big studio work, so perhaps he’s simply a huge ‘Minecraft’ fan. As for Momoa, he has fantasy drama ‘Slumberland’ due this year, with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ landing next March 17th. And, of course, he recently signed on to play a villain in ‘Fast & Furious 10’.

  • Charlize Theron Producing ‘Aqualad’ Series for HBO Max

Having seen success with ‘Peacemaker’ (not to mention the sprawling universe of other superhero shows across several different platforms), DC and HBO Max are teaming up with Charlize Theron to produce new graphic novel adaptation ‘You Brought Me the Ocean’, which will introduce the origin story of DC’s Aqualad to live-action.

Well, at least this version – this being a comic book title, there have been more than one. Still, the Jake Hyde version of Aqualad first debuted in 2010 and was created by Brandon Vietti, Greg Weisman, and Phil Bourassa for the animated series ‘Young Justice.’, where he was voiced by Khary Payton.

A comic book version of the character simultaneously debuted in ‘Brightest Day #4.’ He also goes by the name Kaldur’ahm, and it was later revealed that he is the son of the supervillain Black Manta.

The HBO Max series will be based on characters from DC and the graphic novel by Alex Sanchez and Jul Maroh. This new show will explore the life of Jackson “Jake” Hyde, a gay teenager living in New Mexico. All his life, he has had a strange attraction to the water and yearns to escape his desert surroundings for the ocean. As he explores his abilities, including breathing under and controlling water, he also finds himself falling in love with his classmate, high school swim captain Kenny Liu. Hyde has since become the second Aquaman in the DC canon.

    Charlize Theron in 'Atomic Blonde.'

It’s good to see more forward progress with LGBTQA+ issues in pop culture, and DC has been making some strides in that regard and ‘Young Justice’ has been on the forefront of that.

DC is also everywhere in terms of TV – between the CW’s “Arrowverse” (with ‘The Flash’, ‘Batwoman’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and ‘Superman & Lois’ still on the air), the various animated outings and HBO Max series such as ‘Titans’ (where a different version of the Aqualad character, named Garth has appeared, played by played by Drew Van Acker), ‘Harley Quinn’ and ‘Doom Patrol’ – the company has spread its wings further than even Marvel has attempted thus far.

And the company is expanding its roster yet again with series spawned from movies including those based on ‘The Batman’ and another show from James Gunn that will complement ‘Peacemaker’. And should more of the character’s ‘Young Justice’ team members make the jump to live-action, we could see a whole new generation of heroes ready to conquer TV screens and potentially arrive on the big screen too.

Theron is no stranger to comic book adaptations – most recently, she starred in Netflix movie ‘The Old Guard’, which has a sequel in the works. And she’s also been active as a producer, working on TV and movie projects. Next up for her in acting terms is ‘The School for Good and Evil,’ which will be on Netflix this year.

  • Jason Momoa in Talks to Join ‘Fast & Furious 10’

Jason Momoa as Aquaman in 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.'
Jason Momoa as Aquaman in ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise is well known for its healthy stock of tough types and speedy vehicles. So, it’s perhaps not all that surprising that Jason Momoa is in talks to join the fun.

Yes, the man more normally known as Aquaman looks set to flex his considerable muscles in the next outing of the Vin Diesel-led movies, which boast fast cars, frantic action, and a lot of talk about “family”. A lot. A ridiculous amount.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Momoa is close to a deal for the movie, and could well end up as the main antagonist for this 10th entry. Of course, as anyone who has seen the more recent ‘Fast’ movies knows, villains rarely stay that way forever (even John Cena’s Jakob Toretto turned into a goodie at the end of ‘F9: The Fast Saga’. Which means that even if Momoa starts off causing trouble for Diesel’s Dominic Toretto, they could be bonding over a bottle of Corona and a family barbecue by the time the final credits roll.

And Momoa would be a welcome addition to the movies, especially since Vin Diesel’s attempts to woo back Dwayne Johnson have not so far yielded success. The actor, who played Luke Hobbs in several ‘Fast’ films (including spin-off ‘The Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ opposite Jason Statham), shrugged off Diesel’s latest attempt to make nice.

(L to R) Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in Universal's 'Fast Five.'
(L to R) Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in Universal’s ‘Fast Five.’

“I was very surprised by Vin’s recent post. This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly – and privately – that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return,” Johnson said to CNN.

“I privately spoke with my partners at Universal as well, all of whom were very supportive as they understand the problem. Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation. I didn’t like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker‘s death. Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding.”

“My goal all along was to end my amazing journey with this incredible ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise with gratitude and grace,” he adds, “It’s unfortunate that this public dialogue has muddied the waters. Regardless, I’m confident in the ‘Fast’ universe and its ability to consistently deliver for the audience, and I truly wish my former co-stars and crew members the best of luck and success in the next chapter.” Ouch.

‘Fast 10’ (or whatever they end up calling it) is still largely an unknown in terms of plot – beyond the usual ridiculous, physics-ignoring stunts and team banter. Regular director Justin Lin is back to handle this movie and the one after (which Diesel has said will wrap up the ‘Fast’ franchise as we know it), and we can expect the likes of Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang to “be along for the ride” with Diesel.

‘Fast & Furious 10’ will shoot this year for a May 19, 2023 release.

  • Johnny Depp Reportedly Tried to Get Amber Heard Fired From ‘Aquaman’

Johnny Depp Reportedly Tried to Get Amber Heard Fired From ‘Aquaman’

    Warner Bros.

The battle between exes Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues: Depp’s ongoing legal battles reveal he may have asked a Warner Bros. executive to get her fired from “Aquaman.”

Per THR,  former WB head Kevin Tsuijihara will be testifying about a claim that Depp asked him to blacklist Heard from all WB projects, including “Aquaman.”

Heard obviously did play Mera as planned in “Aquaman,” most likely because she’d already appeared as the character in “Justice League.”

In her motion to dismiss Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit against her, Heard said, “Following my highly-publicized separation from Johnny, … I lost a part for a movie in which I had already been cast.” Whether that refers to “Aquaman” or another film, we don’t know.

Both actors were out promoting their WB films last year: Heard had “Aquaman” and Depp had “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” in which he plays Grindelwald.

Depp’s representative, Adam Waldman, said that issuing subpoenas to Heard, Elon Musk and Tsujihara  is “a last ditch effort to divert attention and stall [the] looming day of reckoning” for Depp’s former lawyers.
