Halle Berry is attached to a variety of new projects.
She has a political thriller and more in the works.
The work will be in movies and TV.
Halle Berry is someone you always assume is booked and busy –– she has ‘Crime 101’, for example, due in cinemas next week –– but Deadline brings word that she’s making moves to ensure that she’ll have projects to work on for a while to come.
Adapted into script form by Nicole Perlman (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) and David Chasteen (‘CIA’), it sees a terrorist threatens an attack so lethal it will return the United States to the dark ages.
The only person who can stop him is President Joanna Duncan (Berry) — but first she has to elude her own secret service and escape the confines of the White House in a gambit to save the world single-handedly. It’s set up at Apple Original Films.
What else does Halle Berry have in development?

Alongside the thriller, Berry is attached to star in ‘Fleur’ from writer/director Ellie Foumbi, which is in pre-production and set to shoot in Paris next month. She’ll play an American housewife who flees to the French capital and starts a life as a dominatrix and elite escort.
On the TV front, she has Peacock’s ‘Zero F***s’, about menopausal best friends, potential HBO medical thriller ‘The Patient’ and ‘Mother Doom’ at FX, which would see her as a retired Special Forces operative on a vengeful mission.
Paul Greengrass can direct this sort of ripped-from-the-headlines drama with one hand tied behind his back; he’s proved time and again that he’s capable of wringing real emotion out of human chaos.
Fortunately, ‘The Lost Bus’ finds him fully in control of his faculties as a filmmaker, keeping the focus sharp and largely side-stepping cliches like a bus careening away from falling power lines.
Script and Direction
Director Paul Greengrass on the set of ‘The Lost Bus,’ now streaming on Apple TV+.
Written by Brad Ingelsby (no stranger to either taught, tense drama or against-the-odds stories having created such projects as ‘Mare of Easttown’) and Greengrass, the new movie doesn’t seek to sensationalize the devastating events of the Camp Fire that tore through the town of Paradise in California and its environs, but keeps its eye largely on the occupants of the bus.
Greengrass near documentary style keeps things compelling as the disaster erupts around the community, stopping in on the fire fighting forces trying to tame the deadly blaze and those in charge of running the school bus system that proves vital to the evacuation.
Naturally, the focus is on the two leads and the kids aboard the bus, who all give good, naturalistic performances. A lot of weight is given early on to Kevin McKay’s (McConaughey) frustrations in life and fractured relationship with his son, but that’s mostly to provide drive for him as he seeks to save his young charges then get back to his own child.
But one other performance deserves a shout-out: Ashlie Atkinson, who is superb as Ruby, the manager/dispatcher at the bus depot, who initially clashes with Kevin, but soon shows her own spine of steels as the crisis worsens.
Final Thoughts
It might be a fairly standard version of the heroic small-town true story, but in Greengrass’ hands it’s scary, impressive and watchable.
Kudos also to the effects team, who bring the various fires to such vivid life you might feel yourself getting warm.

What’s the story of ‘The Lost Bus’?
‘The Lost Bus’ is a white-knuckle ride through one of America’s deadliest wildfires as a wayward school bus driver (Matthew McConaughey) and a dedicated school teacher (America Ferrera) battle to save 22 children from the terrifying inferno.

Martin Scorsese has chosen his next film to direct: ‘What Happens at Night’.
Regular collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio will star alongside Jennifer Lawrence.
It’s a surreal, horror-tinged tale adapted from a Peter Cameron novel.
Martin Scorsese in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.
Cameron’s book follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer.
Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world. As the couple struggle to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together…
Where else can we see Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence?

DiCaprio has Paul Thomas Anderson’s much buzzed-about ‘One Battle After Another’ headed to cinemas this weekend, and while box office prospects haven’t been as great as Warner Bros. might like given the hefty $130 million price tag, it has enjoyed enthusiastic reviews and seems positioned for plenty of awards buzz.
He’s also attached to another Scorsese project, a Hawaii-set based-on-truth story of gangsters and territory that is also set to star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt (though it appears that it’ll now be in development a little longer since the new Marty/Leo team-up is gathering speed.
With the deal for Apple still not locked down, expect to wait a while to learn when this one will arrive. But even assuming the company comes aboard, chances are it’ll look to find one of its regular distribution partners such as Paramount and Warner Bros. to handle getting it into theaters.

John Cena is starring in a movie based on the ‘Matchbox’ toy cars.
‘Extraction’s Sam Hargrave will direct.
Apple and Skydance are backing the new movie.
The success ripples from the behemoth that was ‘Barbie’ continue to spread, as Mattel is looking to tap into another of its classic playtime brands.
And John Cena, who knows a thing or two about vehicular mayhem after appearing a couple of the ‘Fast & Furious’ entries is aboard for the ride as the company looks to turn Matchbox toy cars into a viable movie.
Skydance is working with Mattel to produce the new movie, currently simply titled ‘Matchbox’ which Apple Original Films has already snapped up.
For those who didn’t play with the toys (surely there can’t many people who don’t know what they are), Matchbox is the toy brand first created in 1953 and acquired by Mattel in 1997. After competing with Matchbox in the die-cast car space with its own line, Hot Wheels.
According to lore, automotive enthusiast Jack Odell designed the first car for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends too began clamoring for a “matchbox car,” an iconic brand was born.
That Matchbox is now moving forward is an interesting wrinkle, since studios and filmmakers have tried to get a Hot Wheels movie into production for years now.
What’s the story of the ‘Matchbox’ movie?

Right now, the actual plot for the movie is a mystery. While we’re by no means expecting the lighting-in-a-bottle social satire and genius goofiness of ‘Barbie,’ the new movie may well go down the family-friendly, life-lessons route. Though in his defense, Cena (who cameoed in ‘Barbie’) has also shown a willingness to explore more cleverly comedic takes on properties.
Sam Hargrave, the stunt coordinator-turned-director who crafted the two ‘Extraction’ Netflix movies starring Chris Hemsworth, is aboard to make ‘Matchbox.’ Which would point to plenty of car and other set piece chaos, albeit in slightly less violent fashion than the usual Extr-action.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing this one alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films.

When will the ‘Matchbox’ movie be on screens?
There is currently no release date set for the movie, but with a script seemingly in place and a lead officially cast, we’d expect the wheels (and cameras) to start rolling on this one before too long. If we had to guess, we’d say a 2026 release isn’t out of the question.

Martin Scorsese wants to make two new movies, one about Jesus and one about Frank Sinatra.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are aboard the Sinatra biopic.
Both movies are facing challenges right now.
He may not have taken home a big haul of awards for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, but Martin Scorsese shows no sign of backing away from making movies. He’s got two big projects –– both of which have been percolating on his To Do list for a few years –– that he’s looking to now shoot back to back.
And one, a drama about a particularly fractious time in legendary crooner Frank Sinatra’s personal life, is a particular passion project, and one that he’s finally pushing to put together with Leonardo DiCaprio (of course!) and Jennifer Lawrence starring. So let’s take a look at these two new potential movies, shall we?
Frank Sinatra in ‘Lady in Cement.’ Photo: 20th Century Fox.
When he was out promoting his 2016 religious drama ‘Silence’, Scorsese dropped word that he had been looking to make a Frank Sinatra film with DiCaprio starring. It had been in development since at least 2011, with ‘Field of Dreams’ Phil Alden Robinson writing a script.
Little is known about the exact story at the time, but since Lawrence is on to be Ava Gardner, who infamously broke up Sinatra’s marriage to Nancy Barbato (and became his second wife), you can imagine why this one hit a snag with the singer’s family. Tina Sinatra controls the late performer’s estate, and she seems none too happy with Scorsese’s plans.
Apple, which handed the director a $215 million budget for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is, according to Variety, looking to stay in business with the director, though Sony is currently the front-runner to make the movie.
Yet the director is still aiming to make this movie once he’s wrapped on the Jesus film. Which brings us to that…
What is Martin Scorsese’s new film about Jesus?
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ director Martin Scorsese.
In the same report about the Sinatra film, Variety mentions that Scorsese would first want to revisit the life of Jesus, who he infamously brought to screens in 1988’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’.
‘Life of Jesus,’, which Scorsese has been drumming up independent financing to make, would be based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. It’s the same approach he took to ‘Silence’ (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). And it might also have another ‘Silence’ connection, since one of that film’s stars, Andrew Garfield, is being considered for the Jesus project, though it’s unclear if the 40-year-old is being eyed for the titular role or to play one of the disciples. Miles Teller has also been linked to the film, which Scorsese wants to kick off shooting later this year in Israel, Italy and Egypt.
That first location is the one that might cause the most trouble, since the current war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas is affecting the region.
We’ll see if this either film truly gets moving at last, but Scorsese certainly seems committed to having them both on screen before he retires (take that, Quentin Tarantino!)

When would either new Scorsese film hit theaters?
No details are available for either film’s release plans, especially since they don’t yet have confirmed distribution –– or even schedules at this point.

Cameron Diaz is in talks to join the movie ‘Outcome’.
Keanu Reeves is starring, with Jonah Hill directing.
Apple is backing the new movie.
Given that she seemed to be done with acting after completing work on 2014’s musical remake ‘Annie’, it’s reassuring to know that Cameron Diaz still seems to want to grace our screens.
She already has one project on the way –– Netflix action comedy ‘Back in Action’, which co-stars ‘Annie’s Jamie Foxx –– and has now entered talks to star with Keanu Reeves in a new dark comedy ‘Outcome’.

The new movie’s plot focuses Reef (Reeves), a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip.
Deadline’s story on Diaz joining the film offered no details on who she’s playing. Could she be someone from Reef’s life that he’s wronged in the past? Or a woman who knows him now and is shocked to discover exactly what he was up to back in the day?
‘Outcome’ represents the latest film to be directed by actor Jonah Hill (who may also show up in front of the cameras). He co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods.
Hill, best known for the comedy likes of ‘Superbad’ and the ‘21 Jump Street’ movies, has been making inroads into filmmaking. He first directed 2018 coming-of-age tale ‘Mid90s’ and followed that up with 2022’s ‘Stutz’, a documentary about his therapist.
In addition to that, he’s also moved into writing and producing, working on the likes of ‘You People’ (in which he also starred). And he’s been keeping his acting career going with movies such as ‘Don’t Look Up’ and ‘The Beach Bum’.

Who is backing ‘Outcome’?
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ director Martin Scorsese.
Apple Original Films has picked up the rights to finance and distribute the movie, but there’s no word yet on whether it’ll see the inside of theaters (as with ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’) or debut on Apple TV+ (joining the likes of ‘Fingernails’ and ‘The Beanie Bubble’.)
And it marks the latest collaboration between the company and Hill, who is executive producing a Grateful Dead movie that ‘Flower Moon’ filmmaker Martin Scorsese will direct.
What’s next for Diaz and Reeves?

As mentioned, Diaz will be seen in ‘Back in Action’, which is still awaiting a schedule date from Netflix.
Reeves, meanwhile, was most recently seen in successful fourth ‘John Wick’ outing and has several titles upcoming or in development, including ‘Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (which recently got pushed back to 2025), action comedy ‘Good Fortune’ and the still nebulous ‘Constantine’ sequel, which would see him return as occult detective John Constantine.

Matthew McConaughey is in talks for ‘The Lost Bus’.
Paul Greengrass is considering directing.
Jamie Lee Curtis developed the project based on a real-life story.
It’s been a couple of years since we’ve seen Matthew McConaughey on our screens (that would be in Guy Ritchie’s 2019 movie ‘The Gentlemen’, though he reprised his voice role as ambitious koala Buster Moon in 2021’s ‘Sing 2’), but if Apple and Blumhouse have their way, he’ll be back.
According to Deadline, he’s locking in a deal to star in ‘The Lost Bus’, a new based-on-truth thriller that is headed our way from Blumhouse and Apple Original Films. But despite the Blumhouse company being involved, this isn’t a horror film –– unless you hate fire, perhaps (which is far from the most illogical fear).
Instead, this will draw from a real life act of bravery by two ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

The movie will chart the efforts heroic bus driver Kevin McKay and school teacher Mary Ludwig, who helped navigate a bus full of children through the deadly wildfire as the town of Paradise is caught in the destruction and chaos. The fire destroyed most of the mountain town and killed 85.
‘Out Of The Furnace’s Brad Ingelsby adapted the script from Lizzie Johnson’s book ‘Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire’, which chronicled the deadly incident.
Who is behind ‘The Lost Bus’?
Jamie Lee Curtis poses backstage with the Oscar® for Actress in a Supporting Role during the live ABC telecast of the 95th Oscars® at Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
The new movie has been a passion project for Jamie Lee Curtis since 2022, after hearing Johnson talk about the book in an NPR interview. She investigated the rights and set it up with Blumhouse, where her Comet Pictures company has a first-look deal.
He was interested, but forward momentum last year was stymied by the writers and actors’ strikes that shut down development and potential shooting.

Now though, with McConaughey negotiating to star (Deadline isn’t clear on whether Curtis will appear in the film, though she could conceivably play Mary Ludwig as well as producing) and Greengrass considering making this his next film, this one looks set to speed up quickly, especially since Apple is looking to back the movie.
The director is also attached to adapt T.J. Newman’s book ‘Drowning’ (about passengers and crew trapped in a crashed, sinking plane), but from the looks of this, he’s planning to make ‘The Lost Bus’ a priority before he moves on to the plane film.

Charlize Theron and Daniel Craig are on for new heist pic ‘Two for the Money’.
‘Fast & Furious’ veteran director Justin Lin is making the movie.
Apple has landed the rights to the new project.
It’s clearly the week for big star projects to start looking for homes. We already have Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale aboard a spy story, and now comes word that Charlize Theron and Daniel Craig are aboard heist thriller ‘Two for the Money’.
And the genesis for this one comes from an unlikely place: ‘Fast X’. Because it was an idea that writer/director Justin Lin hatched with his co-writer on the movie, Dan Mazeau.
Theron, who returned as the villainous Cipher for the film, liked the concept and pitched that Craig should co-star.
(L to R) Vin Diesel and director Justin Lin on the set of ‘Fast Five.’
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, the plot is being kept in a vault. But the story reportedly follows the evolution of a relationship between two career thieves, to be played by Theron and Craig, over the course of three big jobs.
Theron was apparently impressed by the snappy dialogue between the two main characters, which invoked feelings of classic romantic comedies such as ‘His Girl Friday’.
Which company has bought the new movie?
(L to R) Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ coming soon to Apple TV+.
Apple secured the rights for this one, representing the company continuing its mission to land big projects following the likes of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Napoleon’, which have both been in theaters and are in the awards race.
Charlize Theron leads a band of seemingly immortal soldiers in the Netflix Original ‘The Old Guard.’
Theron will be back as her long-lived warrior character for ‘The Old Guard 2’, due out on Netflix in 2024, and has a variety of projects she’s working on as a producer.
(L to R) Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell star in Apple TV+’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.’
Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kurt and Wyatt Russell about their work on ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ having the opportunity to work together playing the same role, Kurt’s memories of working with his own father, and what it’s like to be on a TV series set in the cinematic MonsterVerse.
You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Kurt and Wyatt, director Matt Shakman, VFX Supervisor Sean Konrad, and actors Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.
Kurt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ coming soon to Apple TV+.
Moviefone: To begin with, Kurt, can you talk about having the opportunity to work with Wyatt on this series, not on screen, but behind the scenes, to create one seamless performance as the same character? What was that experience like for you?
Kurt Russell: It was a bit daunting. We investigated it and realized that two known actors had done a lot of stuff, but the father-son had never been done, and we were excited about it. We were never really, I don’t think, intimidated by it. It was just like we were wanting to get out there and get after it. It was a lot of hard work, a lot of collaboration to figure out who Lee Shaw is going to be and what he’s going to do to help pull these two time periods together. That’s where I had the most fun with Wyatt, and ever since doing some of these interviews and stuff, we were just saying the other day, we haven’t spent this much time since he was playing hockey in Vancouver. It’s been great.
Wyatt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ coming soon to Apple TV+.
MF: Wyatt what has this experience like for you working with your dad to create the same character?
Wyatt Russell: Same kind of thing. I wouldn’t say it was daunting or I was intimidated, but there was some nervousness on my part because I’d never worked with my dad. There are all the comparisons, they can be kryptonite, they could also be great. So, it was like, “Well, if we’re going to do this, then it’s got to be really good.” The bar in my head, you set even higher than you normally do, and that’s probably a double-edged sword, a good thing and a bad thing. But I was excited by the opportunity to do something big and nervous. I remember my mom (Goldie Hawn) coming into my room one day and talking about something else, but she was like, and my grandfather on my mom’s side said this, “If you’re in the water and your toes just can’t touch the ground, that’s probably right where you’re supposed to be,” and that’s how I felt. It was a good thing, but that’s how I felt.
Kurt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.
MF: Kurt, you worked with your father Bing Russell on a few projects, did working with Wyatt on this show bring back any of those memories?
KR: My dad and I worked together five or six times. We were father and son in ‘Elvis.’ He played Vernon Presley. But this is just completely different on its own, being the same person. We have slightly different energies or rhythms, but we have a lot of idiosyncratic similarities. So, we wanted to find the character, find the one that worked, that would be entertaining for the audience, tell the story, complete the mystery, and pull the two time periods together. At the same time, we created that blending thing to have the audience stop thinking about that and just at the end of it say, “We’re so happy they got those two guys to do it. That was actually a good idea.” It wasn’t a stupid trick. It was a good idea.
Wyatt Russell in ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ premiering November 17, 2023 on Apple TV+.
MF: Finally, Wyatt, the show is huge in scale and scope, and is very cinematic. Did it feel at times like you were making a movie rather than a TV show?
WR: Yes. That was what was really the backstop for any of my anxieties, quite honestly, was then you’d look at where you were. You’d look at the scope of what it was. You’d look at what, in the first two episodes, Matt Shakman was trying to capture with the camera. You’d look at the costumes and what they were putting into it, and it was like, “Okay, well if I suck, this is all going to look awesome.” So, it did feel good and hopefully I didn’t suck. It was awesome. It was on a huge scale.

What is the plot of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?
Following the epic battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, two siblings (Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe), following in their father’s footsteps, uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues introduce them to the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga, spanning three generations, reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.
Who is in the cast of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’?
(Left) Ryan Reynolds in ‘The Adam Project.’ (Right) Kenneth Branagh in ‘Death on the Nile.’
Apple is looking to continue its connection with big-name actors, landing a deal that includes Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh to star in ‘Mayday’, a new action-adventure movie being produced by Skydance Media.
Reynolds, of course, is currently busy making the ‘Deadpool 3’, but he showed interest in the new movie back in April and if all schedules and other details line up, this could be next on his To Do list, once his latest turn as motormouthed mutant Wade Wilson is complete.
So far, in keeping with a project like this that is still at an early stage, the actual story of ‘Mayday’ is being kept under wraps for now, beyond the fact that it’s an action-adventure.
We’re hopeful that in Goldstein and Daley’s hands, it’ll prove to be something more than the genre standard, and potentially funny, since the pair has proved they know what they’re doing when it comes to blended movies. ‘Game Night’ drew laughs out of a mix of mystery and comedy, while ‘Honor Among Thieves’ worked as both a faithful fantasy adventure and a knowing wink at its conventions.
The title could well be a nod to a rescue of some kind, though we’re going to have to wait and see on that front.
‘Mayday’ marks the latest collaboration between Apple and Skydance, with the companies engaged in a first-look deal that has so far yielded the likes of ‘Ghosted’, ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’ and the animated movie ‘Luck’.
This new project returns Reynolds to the Apple fold, since he previously starred alongside Will Ferrell in festive-themed musical comedy ‘Spirited’, which was a new spin on ‘A Christmas Carol’. Alongside ‘Deadpool 3’, which is due in theaters on November 8th, 2024, he also has John Krasinski’s latest directorial outing, ‘Imaginary Friends’, itself headed to screens on May 24th the same year. And he’ll likely also be seen in the sequel to Netflix hit action comedy ‘Red Notice’.
Branagh, meanwhile, will next show up in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, in theaters on July 21st this year, followed by his latest directing/starring turn in an Agatha Christie adaptation, ‘A Haunting in Venice’, where he’ll once again play detective Hercule Poirot. That movie will arrive on September 15th and promises to be more of a horror-inflected story for the master detective.
With no start date in place yet we’ll have to wait to learn when ‘Mayday’ might make it to screens.
