    • Walt Disney Studios made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ and ‘The Dog Stars’.
    • And, of course, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Once the all-conquering ruler of the box office, Disney has seen its fortunes take a tumble in the last couple of years, with the likes of Marvel and Pixar movies suffering issues at the box office.

Still, the Mouse House still has quite the line up, with the likes of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as big hope points.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

Pixar, meanwhile, has a new ‘Toy Story’ offering, and ‘Star Wars’ is back on the big screen. Plus ‘Moana’ is getting the live-action treatment. Let’s see what the company chooses to spotlight…

Before the lights went down, attendees were given a ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ popcorn bag and a ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’-branded diet coke.

The typical studio sizzle reel kicked things off, with plenty of Disney highlights and wrapping with riffs on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ –– the countdown clock that has been part of the promos so far counting down to zero and the caption “Disney will return to CinemaCon.”

There is, of course, a little boasting to de done about last year’s success stories, including a joke about renaming ‘Zootopia 2’ to “Zootopia $1.9 billion”.

    ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’?

With the comedy sequel just a couple of weeks away from release, there wasn’t too much on it, just a quick video message from Anne Hathaway: “20 years later, we are back!” She also thanked theater owners for their support.

But did also cue up some new footage from the movie. Three words: Miranda. Priestly. Zingers.

‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu’

Surely one of the biggest titles (outside of the MCU) to be showcased here is the return of ‘Star Wars’ to the big screen.

Writer/director Jon Favreau arrived on stage to remark how the opening shot of the original ‘Star Wars’ changed the path of his life, and how there will be plenty of IMAX footage in the new movie. Not to mention a fresh score from composer Ludwig Göransson.

Favreau announced the final trailer for the movie (which you can see above) and also showed the opening sequence, which includes an AT-AT in the snow before we watch Mando (Pedro Pascal) get his next bounty hunting gig.

If you’re wondering whether ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ got a mention, the answer is yes –– but only in picture form, and nothing we haven’t seen before.

We went from the galaxy far, far away to the Pixar universe, via some ‘Toy Story 5’ footage. This time around, Woody (who has been off helping rescue other toys) and Buzz, along with their friends, must confront a new toy in Bonnie’s life –– a tech gadget called Lily Pad (voiced by Greta Lee).

Tim Allen (Buzz) and Tom Hanks (Woody) strode on stage to talk about their latest animated effort. The pair exchanged light banter, made fun of working off of a teleprompter and gave plenty of love to the Pixar team. They also introduced a new clip from the movie, featuring their characters reuniting.

    ‘Moana’

Next up is Disney’s ongoing effort to convert all of their animated output to live-action movies. ‘Moana’, which was a huge success in cartoon form back in 2016, is back with a mostly new cast, though retained Dwayne Johnson as Maui.

He was on stage to discuss the film and gush about how much Maui means to him and how his performance was inspired by his grandfather. Johnson was joined by Catherine Laga’aia, who plays Moana, and she revealed that she’d done her very first interview for the movie today.

And, as is standard, we got some new footage from the movie.

Next up from the House of Mouse, an original – Ridley Scott‘s latest, ‘The Dog Stars’ Sir Rid himself appeared (on screen) to introduce the post-apocalyptic story, which stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.

It’s set after the world’s population has been ravaged by a pandemic, and follows Elordi’s Hig, who lives a lonesome existence in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a dour gunman (Brolin) he has befriended. When a mysterious transmission comes through on the radio while he’s flying his old Cessna, it sparks a hunt for the provenance of the sound.

Scott brought the audience first new trailer for the movie, which you can find above, and an early scene.

    ‘Whalefall’

We’re clearly in the “originals” section (okay, both ‘The Dog Stars’ and this are adapted from novels), as ‘Whalefall’ was next.

The movie follows a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places. Oh, and like Ridley Scott’s movie, this also features Josh Brolin.

‘Whalefall’ comes from director Brian Duffield, who previously brought us ‘No One Will Save You’. And the first look at the movie finds the main character, played by Austin Abrams, getting drawn into the mouth of the whale.

We got a look at footage from the beginning of the movie, which features an adorable baby Scratch (the squirrel, in case you forgot).

    ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Of course Marvel was going to wrap things up with what Disney is hoping will be one of, if not the biggest film of the year. No pressure, then…

Marvel boss Kevin Feige arrived on stage to discuss ‘Doomsday’ and introduce something called ‘Infinity Vision’ which will enhance the viewing experience (read more about that here). He also mentioned that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will be back in theaters ahead of the new movie.

Chris Evans speaks during the Walt Disney Studios presentation at Cinemacon 2026 on April 16, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney.

Feige was joined by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who talked about how Doctor Doom (played in the new movie, of course, by Robert Downey Jr.) is the best Marvel villain because he’s always three steps ahead.

And then it was the turn of the man himself (RDJ, not Doom), on stage to announce he wants to give away all the spoilers, but isn’t permitted (and anyway, that’s Tom Holland‘s job).

(L to R) Anthony Russo, Robert Downey Jr., Joe Russo, Chris Evans and Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios speak during the Walt Disney Studios presentation at Cinemacon 2026 on April 16, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney.

A first proper trailer for ‘Doomsday’ played (lots of X-Men) action, and Chris Evans appeared on stage to admit he was only going to return to the MCU for a good reason (no jokes about dump trucks full of money, please). There was a mock argument between RDJ and Evans about their characters.

The trailer played a second time, and let’s just say this… there was screaming in the audience.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

And with that, Disney’s out! Which also marks the end of the studio presentations. Hope you enjoyed our coverage!

    • Chris Hemsworth will return as Tyler Rake in ‘Extraction 3’.
    • Director Sam Hargrave is back behind the camera.
    • Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani are also set to return.

Even though Chris Hemsworth‘s Tyler Rake seemed to die at the end of the first ‘Extraction’ movie back in 2020, audiences responded so well to the action thriller that director Sam Hargrave and the team found a way to bring him back for the second in 2023.

And now it appears Hemsworth will return for more, with Deadline reporting that he’s signed a deal to play Rake a third time.

Hargrave is also back to call the shots (and punches, kicks, stabs etc.), with cast members Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also back on board.

While we know that David Weil (‘Hunters’) is writing the script, the exact plot details are a mystery for now. But we can expect more crazed action from Tyler and the gang as they’re dispatched on another mission.

When will ‘Extraction 3’ hit screens?

Netflix has yet to confirm a debut date for the new movie, but it has scheduled a summer shoot to accommodate the star’s busy schedule (he also has to film ‘Kockroach’ starting this month), so we could predict a spring/summer 2027 release.

    • Colin Farrell is playing a vengeful priest in ‘Ordained.’
    • ‘John Wick’s Derek Kolstad adapted the script from a forthcoming comic title.
    • Joe and Anthony Russo will produce.

Can a movie where a priest delivers a touch of the ol’ ultraviolence be considered “faith based”? We’re not sure the target audience for movies with that descriptor would agree, but it makes us chuckle, nonetheless.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Colin Farrell (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) will be putting that notion to the test as he plays a priest up against criminals in a new movie called ‘Ordained.’

    4xaWfY5Vqvx2CYrUZCzn87

Joe and Anthony Russo (‘Avengers: Endgame’) are attached to produce via their AGBO company and ‘John Wick’ veteran Derek Kolstad is aboard to write the script.

This one doesn’t have a studio (or streaming) home yet, but it has already generated plenty of interest.

    What’s the story of ‘Ordained’?

‘Ordained’ is based on an upcoming comic book by publisher Bad Idea, created by writer Robert Venditti, illustrator Trevor Hairsine and colorist Dave Stewart.

Farrell will star as Father Roy Craig, a priest who performs last rites on a mob boss who miraculously survives — but not before confessing his crimes to the father.

Soon after, Father Roy finds himself targeted by hitmen, corrupt cops and gangsters — all sent by the mob boss who wants to silence him. But Father Roy secretly has a violent past that makes him a more dangerous target than anyone imagines. (He does, however follow the commandment Thou Shall Not Kill, but we’re fairly sure he’s not above brutal maimings!)

Where else can we see Colin Farrell?

Farrell has had something of a mixed year so far –– he scored plenty of acclaim for 2024’s ‘The Batman’ TV spin-off ‘The Penguin,’ but his 2025 movie work hasn’t fared so well –– ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ got bad reviews and did little business at the box office.

And even his collaboration with ‘Conclave’s Edward Berger, ‘Ballad of a Small Player’ hasn’t found a lot of love with critics and seems unlikely to be winning many awards.

Still, Farrell will likely have more luck (even if he has to get back into the prosthetics) when he reprises the role of Oz Cobb for ‘The Batman II’, which should finally begin shooting next year.

He’ll also be back for a new series of Apple TV series ‘Sugar,’ and is attached to ‘All of Us Strangers’ director Andrew Haigh’s drama ‘Belly of the Beast.’

When will ‘Ordained’ be on screens?

This one is a case of waiting to see which company picks it up. The movie is also without a director at the moment (Kolstad may do it, but that isn’t confirmed yet).

    • Dates for ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘The Dog Stars’ were also confirmed.

Turns out, making two giant ‘Avengers’ movies back to back is going to take a little longer than originally thought.

Disney and Marvel have announced that the next two team-up films from the comic book behemoth are now set to arrive a little later in theaters than originally planned –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is shifting from a planned May 5th, 2026 slot to December 18th, 2026.

Likewise, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will now decamp from a May 5th, 2027 release date to –– you guessed it! –– December 18th that year.

Clearly, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have decided the new movies will require some more work than they figured. Which honestly, is no bad thing –– better to wait and get it right in the hopes of an ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’-level success, than pump out something quickly.

The sprawling cast for at least the first movie (we’re expecting several to appear in both) was first announced in a viral video Marvel put online showing director’s chairs with the actor’s names on them.

    So who can we expect?

On the longstanding MCU front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who also appeared in ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (the main character of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who recurred in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, while Lewis Pullman, introduced as “Bob” (the character we now know as Sentry), is part of the new cast.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now. And Danny Ramirez, who was introduced as Joaquim Torres in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and reprised the role in February’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will show up as the new Falcon.

On the recent addition front, there’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ which will introduce the iconic team to the MCU on July 25th.

Any surprises? We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair was among the others.

Finally, there’s the even more unexpected likes of Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

And talking of the original Fox X-Men line-up, he’s not alone, as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden were also announced.

Channing Tatum as Gambit in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. Photo: Marvel Studios.

Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit.

Finally, because you can’t really have ‘Doomsday’ without Doom, Robert Downey Jr. is making his big MCU return, this time playing classic ‘Fantastic Four’ villain Doctor Doom.

We’re sure more cast will be announced before ‘Doomsday’ arrives, but Disney has more time to get the message out.

Joe and Anthony Russo on their return

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

And that creative spark extended to regular collaborator Stephen McFeely, who is also back writing the new movies.

While other co-writer Christopher Markus is so far sticking with the Russos’ AGBO company to keep it running, McFeely was tempted back into the MCU machine.

    Here’s what Joe told Empire:

“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’?

Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

In a 2015 revival by Jonathan Hickman, the resulting conflict left the multiverse collapsed, the survivors living on a single planet ruled by classic villain Doctor Doom.

The Russos have previously talked about their enthusiasm for ‘Secret Wars,’ so this one made sense.

What other movie release dates were announced?

In a Thanos-like snap, three Marvel dates have disappeared from the calendar completely. The place holders for February 13th, 2026, November 6th, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have all been removed from Disney’s calendar, pointing towards the result of Marvel’s commitment to quality over quantity.

It wasn’t all Marvel changes –– Disney also confirmed the dates for some of the movies headed our way via its 20th Century Studios, including Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Dog Stars,’ starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin. That one will be released on March 27th, 2026.

Then there is sequel ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ which will see the return of Meryl Streep‘s imperious magazine editor Miranda Priestly as she navigates the challenges of the declining print industry. The comedy drama sequel is due on May 1st, 2026.

Finally, the company has scheduled an IMAX/3D re-release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ which is set for October 3rd this year, laying the groundwork for the upcoming ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ on December 19th.

    Preview:

    • Marvel has revealed the main cast for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • It’s a mix of returning names and (relatively) new recruits.
    • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027.

While Marvel usually prefers to keep its secrets close (at least, closer than the current government seems to manage), there is also the conflicting compulsion to promote the next movie in its sprawling cinematic universe, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

We’ve known for a while that the Avengers will be back to face the threat of Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), but the rest of the cast was largely in the realm of speculation, even for those who have been part of the MCU family for years.

The company used a livestream to confirm who will show up in the new movie, consisting of footage of the backs of director’s chairs featuring the cast names.

Who is in the cast of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

And those names? A mixture of established actors and some of the more recent recruits.

On the longstanding front, we have Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man (whose chair is amusingly smaller than the others), Letitia Wright as Shuri, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent (from ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ who is back on our screens this year in May 2nd’s ‘Thunderbolts*’), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (likewise part of ‘Thunderbolts*’), David Harbour (introduced as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’ and who will also recur in ‘Thunderbolts*’). Also from both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, Hannah John Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost.

Alongside Wright, ‘Black Panther’s Winston Duke will be back as M’Baku, and Tom Hiddleston will also return as Loki.

We’re happy to see Simu Liu will return as Shang-Chi, a character who really has deserved a sequel before now.

We’re not sure we predicted Tenoch Huerta Mejia –– who played Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ coming back, but his chair is among the others (not dripping with water –– missed joke opportunity there!).

Lashana Lynch and Kelsey Grammer in 'The Marvels'.
(L to R) Lashana Lynch and Kelsey Grammer in ‘The Marvels’. Photo: Marvel Studios.

And Kelsey Grammer, who played Dr. Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy/Beast in Fox Marvel movies ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ and cropped up in a cameo as the character in ‘The Marvels,’ is also on the list.

There’s no word yet on whether this means his version of Beast will be the final MCU variant, but with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden also announced, the X-Men clearly have a presence. Likewise, Channing Tatum, who made such an impact in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will be back as Gambit. No sign of Ryan Reynolds or Hugh Jackman, though.

Lewis Pullman, who is introduced as a character called “Bob” (but who has since been revealed to be powerful character Sentry) in ‘Thunderbolts*’ is also listed. So we’re guessing his character –– who also appears to be an antagonist in the movie given the new trailer –– factors in somehow.

Last, but by no means least, the doors to the cavernous soundstage holding all the chairs opens up, and in strides Downey Jr., who sits in his own named chair and puts his finger to his lips. It’s over!

We’re sure there will be other announcements to come –– the company loves to hold back cameos and other roles, so we’ll have to wait and see if Tom Holland or Mark Ruffalo spoil the appearances or if an official press release arrives in due time.

If you’re desperate to see the Livestream, please click on the video player at the top of the page.

The new movie is now kicking off shooting in London, with Marvel veteran directors Joe and Anthony Russo –– who count the giant two previous Avengers outings ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ on their shared resume –– back marshalling the chaos that is a team-up movie on this scale.

Of course, one of the biggest plot elements for the new movies has already been revealed on Marvel’s terms, with Robert Downey Jr. taking the stage at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con to confirm he’s playing Victor Von Doom.

And according to the directors he’s very involved in helping to shape the character.

This is what they told Entertainment Tonight:

“It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”

And following ‘Doomsday,’ we’ll see ‘Secret Wars’…

‘The Electric State’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Netflix on March 14th, ‘The Electric State’ is the latest big movie from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’/‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo and is set in a dystopian past where robots and mankind have been locked in conflict.

It’s just the latest effort from the filmmakers, who haven’t exactly had a warm critical reception for the work they’ve put out since ending their ‘Avengers’ run (they’re back on that particular duty with the next two movies), and unfortunately won’t do all that much to change the perception of them.

Does ‘The Electric State’ Have the Right Spark of Invention?

‘The Electric State’ is reaching for Spielbergian levels of exploring heart within technological tales, but it never quite makes it there.

A lot of what is entertaining about this new movie feels like it was borrowed from other, better movies, some of them Spielberg’s own –– there is definitely some DNA from ‘A.I.: Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Ready Player One‘ here in the story (adapted by the directors’ regular collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely from Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel.

While the source material offers a basic spine for the plot –– an alternate 1990s where humanity and robots have been locked in a conflict after the latter revolted against being employed to do all the grunt work people don’t want to –– and some of the visual inspiration, the movie takes those ideas and runs with them.

Yet what the team chooses to make its focus doesn’t always work that well. And to add to the feel of borrowed acclaim, chunks of the score sound like composer Alan Silvestri using discarded cuts from his ‘Avengers’ music.

    Script and Direction

Markus and McFeely have brought us well-thought-out stories before, even ones that must juggle multiple characters.

But in ‘The Electric State,’ the central character is Millie Bobby Brown’s Michelle, whose life is shattered when her parents and genius younger brother are killed in a car crash. At least, she thinks her brother is dead –– but when she’s visited unexpectedly by a robot based on his favourite childhood cartoon, she comes to believe he might actually be alive.

So begins a quest to find him, one that will take Michelle, smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) and his robot sidekick Herm (voiced by Anthony Mackie) into what is known as the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots were banished following the war.

The plot offers the opportunity for plenty of amusing robo-characters, but the sheer number just makes the film feel busy and underfocused, while the endless quips from the various robots don’t always land. The narrative is also locked into a fairly predictable progression –– you’ll likely guess where it’s all headed before too long.

    'The Electric State'. Photo: Netflix.
    ‘The Electric State’. Photo: Netflix.

Still, there is some genuine emotion infused towards the end of the story.

As directors, the Russos have proved they can handle these big movies, but their more recent efforts on that front, including ‘The Gray Man’ have been blandly reductive releases despite the talent involved both on screen and behind the camera.

For ‘The Electric State’ that means a starry cast (most of them are on voice duty) and some very impressive visual effects, but with a $320 million budget, you’d expect that.

    Cast and Performances

Millie Bobby Brown continues to prove she can anchor genre work, but the role of Michelle, the young woman at the center of the movie, doesn’t always offer her too many chances to prove it. She’s perfectly fine in the role, but little more than that.

Chris Pratt, meanwhile, is largely doing a riff on characters of this type he’s played before –– the lovable rogue we’ve met in the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Jurassic World,’ and Keats is very much a watered-down version of those.

Stanley Tucci is somewhat lumbered with a basic villain role, a tech mogul with shades of Elon Musk who claims to want to help humanity but is only too happy if there’s collateral damage.

(L to R) Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci in 'The Electric State'. Photo: Netflix.
(L to R) Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci in ‘The Electric State’. Photo: Netflix.

Giancarlo Esposito is also an antagonist, the hard-nosed drone pilot and robot deactivation specialist Colonel Bradbury, but the part is very much another scowling villain role for the actor, who might want to look into some different parts.

Woody Norman as Michelle’s super-smart brother Chris has some nice notes to play, though he is naturally off screen for much of the running time. Still, if there is genuine emotion to be found at all, it’s in the human connection between Chris and Michelle.

Another Woody, this time Harrelson, plays Mr. Peanut, the southern-fried promotional robot of the snack treat. He’s decent, but mostly speaks in platitudes.

Elsewhere, the voice cast is a mixed bag –– Jenny Slate and Mackie are among the highlights, while Brian Cox is saddled with a one-joke character in Pop Fly, a baseball bot.

    Final Thoughts

‘The Electric State’ seems unlikely to change many peoples’ opinion about the Russo’s non-MCU work. It’s certainly a sweeping story with some fun to be found, but it rarely leaves a mark on the level of movies it has been inspired by.

It’s a shame, as the creative team have clearly poured their hearts into it –– if only the results were better.

What’s the plot of ‘The Electric State’?

‘The Electric State’ is set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. Millie Bobby Brown stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising.

Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she’s visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher — Michelle’s genius younger brother whom she thought was dead. Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie).

As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colorful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

    • Michelle Monaghan and Adam Scott are joining crime thriller ‘The Whisper Man.’
    • Robert De Niro is starring in the movie.
    • James Ashcroft will direct the adaptation of the Alex North novel.

Since their time spent working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have launched production company AGBO and embarked on directing several movies of their own while producing shows and films for others, including via a deal with Netflix.

AGBO’s Netflix output has included 2019’s ‘Mosul,’ 2020 Chris Hemsworth starrer ‘Extraction,’ while 2022 saw the release of Ryan Gosling/Chris Evans spy thriller ‘The Gray Man’ (which reached No. 7 on Netflix’s all-time most popular film list despite some seriously mixed reviews), and 2023 sequel ‘Extraction 2.’ All three of the titles reached the Netflix Top 10 list in 93 countries.

The pair currently has sci-fi adventure ‘The Electric State’ headed to the streaming service this Friday, but is also developing new crime thriller ‘The Whisper Man’ based on Alex North’s novel, with Robert De Niro starring and ‘Coming Home in the Dark’ and ‘The Rule of Jenny Pen’ filmmaker James Ashcroft in the director’s chair.

The First Omen’s Ben Jacoby and ‘It’ veteran Chase Palmer have written the script for the new movie.

Here’s what the AGBO team said when ‘The Whisper Man’ was first announced:

“AGBO is excited to be embarking on our 6th film with our incredible partners at Netflix. ‘The Whisper Man’ is a gripping thriller but at its core is a poignant and complex story of father and sons. We are grateful to have one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, anchoring that story and with the remarkable James Ashcroft directing.”

The cameras are scheduled to start rolling this spring on the East Coast and now, via Deadline, word arrives that the film’s cast is expanding to include Michelle Monaghan and Adam Scott.

Here’s the official synopsis of the book: after the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.

But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed “The Whisper Man,” for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.

Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter’s crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice.

Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.

While no character details have been revealed for the movie, we’re thinking Scott will play Kennedy, while the film’s synopsis mentions he has an estranged retired police detective for a father, so that’s a role we could see De Niro taking.

As for Monaghan, might she be detective Beck?

Last year, Scott was seen in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off ‘Madame Web’ as Ben Parker.

Coming up, he has comedy thriller ‘The Saviors’ and horror title ‘Hokum.’

And he’s planning to make his feature directorial debut with thriller ‘Double Booked.’

With ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ stumbling somewhat out of the gate (even a $344 million worldwide box office so far isn’t considered crushing it by Marvel Cinematic Universe standards), the pressure is further on the likes of the upcoming ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ to deliver in terms of ticket sales and audience reactions.

So too, is there increased focus on the next two ‘Avengers’ movies, which have long been the big tentpole events in Disney and Marvel’s release calendars, also proving to be profitable money spinners.

    aulDnGXPFkuVgP2q8dOyT6

Back making the next two major team-up movies having brought us the ultra-successful likes of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (itself more an Avengers movie than a truly Cap-focused one), ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ are directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

Making the press rounds for their latest film, Netflix sci-fi title ‘The Electric State,’ the pair have naturally been fielding questions about their plans for the new ‘Avengers’ entries.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them to return:

“We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. While a lot of both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will naturally film inside soundstages (which are much easier in terms of protecting cameos or plot developments), there will be some location based work in the UK where the production is being based.

And according to the Russos, they’re ready to defeat snoopers.

Here’s what the brothers told Collider:

“We’re pretty good about shutting that down. We’ve sort of strategized to hopefully be effective with that. We don’t want people getting photographs, so we are being pretty stringent. The location work we are doing, we have picked those locations with that in mind, as well.”

According to the pair, each of the two new movies will take around six months to shoot, which means their lives are about to be very ‘Avengers’-centric for the next couple of years at least.

Alongside Downey and freshly-introduced ‘Fantastic Four’ cast, rumors have swirled about Chris Evans (whether as Steve Rogers or another character), though he has since denied them, and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter.

Anthony Mackie is very likely to show up as Cap, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been talked about to return as Doctor Strange. We’ll have to wait and see whether the likes of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man or any of the other stalwarts will be back.

There’s good money on Chris Hemsworth as Thor (since he’s still active) and hopefully the likes of Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes will report for duty.

And following ‘Doomsday,’ of course, will be ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

    What is Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars?

‘Secret Wars’ would draw from (through the usual Marvel movie filter where changes will be made) a pair of 1980s comic book series focused on an all-powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

Marvel is planning to have ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on screens on May 1st, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on May 7th, 2027.

    • Joe and Anthony Russo are explaining their return to Marvel.
    • They, together with Marvel boss Kevin Feige found a story they wanted to tell.
    • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027.

Marvel is looking to build on the renewed momentum it found thanks to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (and the positive reactions to its latest small screen outing, ‘Agatha All Along’) with three movies headed our way this year: ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps.’

But as usual, the company and its Disney bosses have plans for movies (and shows) way beyond those, and now we’re learning a little more background behind two of the biggest and most anticipated films –– ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

    q5VLc2sWG8iTCfdTnqrw22

Specifically, the return of filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, who handled some of the most successful movies in the MCU’s first few phases, including box office behemoths ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

They previously opted to focus on their own projects and building their production company in the wake of ‘Endgame’s giant success but have since been tempted back.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Anthony revealed that what lured them:

“We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon a [‘Secret Wars’] idea that activated all of us, you couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’ ”

What do you think if we all go back and do ‘Secret Wars?’ He was like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not.’ And then he hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 he called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea…’ ”

The two new movies will feature Doctor Doom, played by fellow returning big Marvel name Robert Downey Jr.

In addition to the big ‘Avengers’ update, there was also word on someone else returning for a different project.

According to Deadline, Faran Tahir, who played the role of the villainous Raza, the apparent leader of the terrorist organization the Ten Rings who tried to kill Tony Stark in ‘Iron Man,’ has been added to the cast of the series built around Paul Bettany’s ‘Vision.’

He’ll be playing Raza, but we don’t know how or whether the Ten Rings will factor in, especially since the organization was further explored in ‘Shang-Chi.’

The ‘Vision’ series (whether it ends up titled ‘Vision Quest’ or not) will focus on the titular android as he tries to regain his memory and humanity. After Thanos killed him in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ Vision returned in 2021’s ‘WandaVision.’

Star Trek: Picard’ Season three showrunner Terry Matalas is in charge of the show, and it’ll feature Todd Stashwick (who appeared in ‘Picard’) in an unknown role alongside James Spader, who will reprise the Ultron role from 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?

    • Hayley Atwell is reportedly headed back to the MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
    • Joe and Anthony Russo are aboard to direct the movie.
    • Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Dr. Doom, and Chris Evans is also coming back in some capacity.

It appears that, while it has a newer crop of heroes who will be tackling a giant new threat, Marvel intends to get at least some of the old gang back together –– in both familiar and fresh roles.

Following on from this summer’s huge announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU (albeit as the villainous Victor Von Doom rather than Tony Stark) for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’) and the more recent word that Chris Evans is also in talks to show up, we now have word via Deadline that Hayley Atwell is also in line to show up.

While there has been chatter about Evans possibly playing a character other than Steve “Captain America” Rogers –– Nomad, a title that Rogers takes on after giving up the Cap mantle to Sam Wilson, it seems Atwell would be back as Peggy Carter, AKA the MI6 and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is the great love of Steve’s life.

To say the road to the new ‘Avengers’ films has been problematic is to say ‘Kraven the Hunter’ had a slightly disappointing start at the box office this past weekend.

Originally announced as part of a big reveal by studio boss Kevin Feige at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con about future “phase” developments, the new movies were called ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

‘The Kang Dynasty’ has been the real sticking point here. Though the plan had presumably been to build to a confrontation with Jonathan Majors’ multiversal villain, Majors found himself cut by Marvel after accusations (and, later a guilty result) of harassment.

While ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton boarded the film shortly after it was announced, he’s since stepped away. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy has reportedly offered been the gig since then, but the July Con announcement also confirmed that ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo are back to handle the two giant team-up efforts.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will focus on the likes of the current Avengers team and the Fantastic Four (played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bacharach, and set to be introduced in their own movie next July) having to face the new threat of Doom.

‘Secret Wars’ has been more of a mystery on the filmmaking front.

Carter’s return also makes sense for McFeely, who along with regular writer Christopher Markus, created the ‘Agent Carter’ series.

Alongside Evans in whatever capacity, we’ll of course see Downey plus the ‘Fantastic Four’ cast.

Mackie is very likely to show up as Cap, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been talked about to return as Doctor Strange. We’ll have to wait and see whether the likes of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man or any of the other stalwarts will be back.

What is Peggy Carter’s Marvel history?

Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter / Captain Carter in 'Agent Carter'. Photo: Marvel Studios.
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter / Captain Carter in ‘Agent Carter’. Photo: Marvel Studios.

Introduced (on screen, at least) in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ Peggy Carter is a heroic British agent who met Evans’ Steve Rogers before the experiment that turned him into Captain America.

Believing Steve lost for decades at the end of that film, Peggy forged ahead with her own career, helping to build S.H.I.E.L.D. and appearing in her own TV series, ‘Agent Carter.’

By the time Rogers was discovered in the ice, Peggy was an old woman, and the pair had an emotional reunion. At the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Steve chose to go back in time and live a life with Peggy.

Where and when (and how) we’ll find Peggy this time around remains to be seen. Could it be a multiversal variant of the character? (We met an ill-fated version of Peggy, who got the Super Soldier Serum herself and became Captain Carter in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’)

However she returns, we’ll be happy to see Peggy on screen again.

Outside of the MCU, Peggy has been busy in other action movies, including the most recent ‘Mission: Impossible’ outing ‘Dead Reckoning.’ She’ll be back as Grace for ‘The Final Reckoning’ in May.

When will the next two ‘Avengers’ movies head to screens?
