  • 6 Childhood Toys That Will (Probably) Be Movies Someday

Forget books, fairy tales, or plays. Hollywood’s adaptation inspiration seems to be coming straight from the toy chest.

Trolls” and “Ouija: Origin of Evil” are just two recent movies based on our favorite playthings of the past; there are more than few existing examples of toys being made into movies (for better or for worse), and we can only imagine that even more are being produced as you’re reading this.

We already predicted days of the year that will (probably) be movies on day, but what about the beloved games and dolls from our childhoods? Here are six movie ideas based on some of the most memorable toys of our youth.

We’ll be waiting for your call, Hollywood.

    1. Easy Bake OvenAn Easy Bake Oven sits on display in the Hasbro showroom dur
Picture this: A novice home chef played by Hailee Steinfeld gets a cooking show deal after her Easy Bake Oven YouTube recipes go viral. What the world doesn’t know is … her magical oven has an (adorable) mind of its own. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the evil network exec / failed chef who gets wind of the oven’s sorcery and attempts to steal its power, along with all of its recipes. Ina Garten voices one of the spoons.

Tagline: Bake it easy … this Christmas.

    2. Kid Sister / My Buddy Unfortunately, we still haven’t forgotten the catchy little jingle for ’80s sensations Kid Sister and My Buddy, the stuffed friends who would hang out with you because, um, they weren’t actually human and had no choice. We could totally see this as a gritty indie comedy: Kid Sister and My Buddy, all grown up and dealing with the harsh realities of the real world. My Buddy, or Buddy, played by Jason Schwartzman and Kid Sister, Sissy, played by Sarah Paulson, live in LA, go in and out of rehab, still clinging to their glory days as celebrities of Reagan-era yesteryear. They team up to start a Kid Sister/My Buddy “reunion tour” and meet people across America who loved them as kids. They then start to turn their lives around, even though stuff gets really weird and surreal in between. At one point, they dance in an abandoned parking lot to a slowed-down techno version of their respective theme songs. Honestly, we would watch this one.

    Tagline: Stop kidding yourself.

    3. PerfectionThe pitch for this high-stakes thriller would be “Speed” meets “Jumanji” meets “Tron.” In a post-apocalyptic future, a young prodigy (Jaden Smith) is tasked with saving mankind from our enemy planet by completing a mind-boggling city-sized puzzle (basically a large Perfection board) before it combusts. Lily-Rose Depp is the young, newly crowned queen of the villainous Planet Perfecta, and Rachel Weisz is the ailing mother and formerly beloved leader she is trying to impress. Expect lots of laser beams. Christopher Nolan will be asked to direct, but he will most likely decline.

Tagline: He’s putting the pieces together … for peace.

    4. Wooly Willy
Magnetic facial-hair wand toy Wooly Willy has been around since the ’50s, but this story clearly must take place in modern-day Brooklyn because, why not? Kevin James is Willy Wooly (see what I did there?), a down-on-his-luck barber who can’t catch a break … or a date! After saving a mysterious woman from falling into a manhole, she gives him her wand, and he figures out he has the ability to transform his facial hair into incredibly realistic disguises. At first, he uses the wand for all sorts of antics, like pretending to be famous to score hot ladies, when really he should have been using it to do all sorts of good. Eventually he does, and ends up with his unassuming podiatrist, Eva Longoria, because movies.

    Tagline: It’s one hairy situation.

    5. Baby Alive / Baby All GoneIn this twisted horror flick, a couple, who has been trying to conceive, buys a Baby All Gone for their neighbor’s kid but realize the doll has transformed into a real, live baby, so they decide to keep it without telling anyone. The campy throwback, directed by The Duffer Brothers, will be filled with spot-on ’90s goodness and all the horror movie references you can count. Something sinister is going on with those cherries, so watch out, kiddos. Cue the creepy nursery songs. That’s one freaky infant.

Tagline: It won’t stop until they’re … all gone.

    6. Polly PocketEverything seems pretty peachy for Polly Pocket — she’s got a sweet job as a fashion and lifestyle blogger, a cool dream house with lots of layers, roller-skates, waterskis, and tons of friends. But she’s perpetually single, which is NOT acceptable. Watch Polly (Kristen Bell) as she navigates the contemporary dating world (there are so many Tinder jokes) in this cheery, self-aware rom-com. Her love interest (Anthony Mackie) will be a publishing associate whose company is interested in buying her blog, tasked with (secretly) digging deep into her personal life. The only way to do that? Date her! But they totally fall in love and she finds out why he really asked her out in the first place and it’s a huge conflict. Sort of.

Tagline: Love’s a game. Just keep playing!

  • Chris Evans Smashes ‘Panic Attack’ Rumor, Reacts to Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

The next Marvel villain should just be Internet Rumors, with Captain America scrolling through Twitter to fight back against all the untrue stories that pop out of nowhere and spread like a game of Telephone.

(Cap) was recently at Wizard World in Philadelphia — along with “Captain America: Civil War” co-stars (Sam/Falcon) and (Bucky/Winter Soldier) — and it sounds like he had a good time, despite the rumor that an overzealous fan gave him an anxiety attack.

During one portion of the Wizard World panel, Evans addressed the report that Brie Larson may play Captain Marvel. “I just heard about that,” hesaid. “I really hope that happens. I love Brie Larson. We did a movie together back in ’09, we did ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’. I cannot say enough about Brie Larson. I think she is phenomenal, and I really hope that happens.” Anthony Mackie joked that they should twist it around and cast a dude as Captain Marvel. (The audience booed, and Mackie mocked surprise.)

    Watch that clip here:

That was fine and dandy. Then Sunday night, for whatever reason, someone tweeted a report that there was a crazy fan who tried to kiss Chris Evans and, when he denied her, she got mad and that led him to have a panic attack. That story started to spread, with details being added along the way — like Evans having to leave the photo op event for 40 minutes, and wanting to cancel everything because he has anxiety issues — even though no one could back it up with any evidence.

The rumor found its way to Chris Evans, who addressed it head on:

Glad to hear it’s false. Although it’s also a good reminder that fans should give their favorites plenty of space at these events, and don’t pull a Norman Reedus fan move like licking or biting.

  • ‘Civil War’: 25 Things We Learned on the Set From Team Captain America

Marvel's Captain America: Civil War..L to R: Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), and Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan)..Photo Credit: Film Frame..© Marvel 2016Black Widow vs. Hawkeye. Winter Soldier vs. Black Panther.

Those are just two of the kick-punching battles we saw last summer on the set of “Captain America: Civil War,” Marvel’s third Cap movie that, according to directors Anthony and Joe Russo, will forever change the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it hits theaters this summer.

Ever since Kevin Feige first announced the project in the fall of 2014, audiences have been figuratively (and sometimes literally) salivating at the prospect of watching two of their favorite Avengers duke it out and raise the emotional stakes of the franchise. But, why exactly are they fighting? Because of the Superhero Registration Act. It’s a policy in reaction to Ultron’s whole “Gonna kill Earth by throwing a city at it” plan in “Avengers: Age of Ultron;” something to help hold the heroes of the world accountable when their efforts to save the planet end up hurting it and its citizens.
Steve Rogers is against the Act. Tony Stark makes himself the public face of it. Fist-powered disagreements ensue. But the filmmakers promise that the only thing more impactful than the body blows our Avengers deliver are the emotional wounds they inflict — which cut even deeper.

“[These movies] only work, the cool fights and action scenes, they only work if you care about the characters,” Joe Russo said during a break from shooting a portion of the aforementioned fight, which takes place on the tarmac of a German airport. Here, Team Cap (above) assembles before engaging Team Iron Man in a battle that the Russos described as their version of a comic book’s “splash page” — a colorful two-page spread used to usually depict an epic action-y event.

Expect “Civil War” to have many of these moments, according to the members of Team Cap that we spoke with on set in Atlanta. To kick off the premiere of six new “Team Cap” posters, and the first part of our set visit coverage, Moviefone sat down with Chris Evans (Cap), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and the Russos to discuss the MCU’s biggest movie yet. Here are 25 things we learned, as broken down by key players on Steve Rogers’ team.

    Anthony Mackie
    1. Falcon serves as the “in” for the audience. “[Falcon is] being used strategically to ask the audience’s questions,” Mackie revealed, adding that Falcon illustrates this in ways similar to the scene in “Ultron” where Hawkeye pulls Scarlet Witch aside in the middle of the final battle. “He says ‘Look, we’re adults. I’m wearing a suit. I have arrows. I’m not cool, but we have to go out here and fight.’”

“So [in this movie] when Scarlet Witch is all (does rave hands) I’m like, ‘You saw that? Right. Just making sure you saw that.’ Scarlet Witch and her crazy rave baby technique and Ant-Man and him riding an ant. Alright, cool. That’s what he does — he shrinks and rides ants.”

    2. Speaking of Ant-Man, as seen in the film’s trailer, Scott Lang becomes a member of Team Cap. And we saw him in action (well, just running with Team Cap toward a confrontation with Team Iron Man). We also saw Paul Rudd shooting a sequence that indicates Ant-Man gets his own “giant” (hint!) moment during the fight — something we only glimpsed before being whisked away by on-set publicity.

    3. Falcon’s addition to the Avengers’ roster at the end of “Ultron” is something “Civil War” will address, says Mackie: “The idea of him becoming an Avenger is pretty cool. He’s pretty excited about it. We definitely get an element of that in the film.” Mackie also stressed that the Russos have a “very specific” vision for Falcon’s storyline and “how he feels about Steve and the rest of The Avengers.”
    4. Mackie is also excited about his character’s new Avengers status, which he didn’t become aware of until the premiere of “Ultron.” “By the end of the movie,” Mackie said, “I turn around and [Cap says] ‘Avengers Assemble!’ I’m like, ‘Holy sh**! I’m an Avenger!’ So I turn around to everybody with me and they were like, ‘Dude! You’re a f***in’ Avenger!’ That’s the story of my Marvel life.”

    5. The Avengers’ costumes, including Falcon’s, get an upgrade courtesy of Tony Stark. And when it comes to Tony, according to Mackie, Falcon has a unique opinion about the billionaire-playboy-philanthropist.

“I don’t know why everybody thinks Tony’s cool, and Tony thinks he’s really cool, but Falcon just thinks he’s a nerd. And not like a cool millennium nerd.” In addition to Falcon reacting to, and interacting more, with Stark, fans can expect to see Falcon assess Vision as well. “He is by far the easiest person to make fun of,” Mackie says of Stark and Ultron’s creation. “Vision is definitely my one guy because he’s easy to make fun of.”

    6. Mackie also revealed that Falcon’s costume is less cool on set than it looks on the big screen. That’s because his character’s wings are added later with CG. “They have these little wings [I wear on set], like these little three-foot wings. It’s whatever. I’m happy about it. I’m happy to be an Avenger!”

Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely
    7. As Tony and Steve battle it out, the writers revealed that Vision is primed to struggle with what it is to be human. As he was created to be a perfect being, now working with very flawed people, Markus said audiences can expect Vision to “have problems with the modern world.” But the writers don’t want him to deal with these problems in a cliched way. Rather, they want to address it similarly to how they dealt with Cap being a man “out of time” in the last film.

“In the same way that, in ‘Winter Soldier,’ we didn’t want Steve to have trouble with iPhones and tight jeans, you know, like, ‘what is this modern world?’” McFeely said. “But we wanted him to have problems with the modern world, right. We also don’t want to do, with Vision, [in robot voice] ‘How do I become a human?’ So we’re trying to be really elegant about this guy, who was one day old at the end of ‘Ultron’ adjusting to life.”

    8. And yes, fans, the relationship Vision and Scarlet Vision have in the comics will be addressed somewhat in “Civil War.” “We play with it,” Markus revealed. “It is kind of fascinating. But he’s got the stone in his head that I think Strucker used to give [Witch] her powers. So it’s all sort of, ‘These things are getting really weird.’ So there’s fun toys to play with there.”9. Another dynamic the writers are playing with here is Black Widow’s relationship with both Stark and Rogers. As seen in the Super Bowl spot, Black Widow is on Team Iron Man — but it’s not easy for her.

“It’s difficult,” according to Markus, “because she’s not trained to take sides. She’s trained to be a duplicitous double-agent and have loyalties for sale. Obviously, she’s well on her way to not being that person, but it’s still… standing up next to someone and taking a side and going ‘No I believe in this’ is counter to her nature. So it’s in a way almost toughest for her than anybody to go, ‘This is my side and I’m sticking to it.’”

    10. In terms of “choosing sides,” the writers hope audiences walk away from the movie as divided as the heroes in it. “We want people walking out of this movie going, ‘Tony’s right,” McFeely said. “And half the other people going, ‘Steve’s right.’ That would be a dream if we got 49-51 split. Because the question is a legitimate one. Do they need oversight or not? Steve, at one point, he says in the movie, what if these people send us somewhere we don’t think we should go? What if there’s a place we need to go, and they wont send us? It’s an excellent argument.”

    11. In terms of locations, “Civil War” is an international affair. Markus revealed that the movie takes place “all over the world,” in more locales than any previous Marvel film. He also teased we will visit at least one place from Captain America’s past that we have seen before.

    Directors Anthony and Joe Russo
    12. When it comes to sheer scale, Marvel has outdone themselves here.

“This is much, much bigger than ‘Winter Soldier,’ Joe said. “I think it’s probably bigger than anything they’ve done to date. Just scale of character, without question.” His brother Anthony adds: “It’s also very complex on that level because, again, while these characters have had conflicts before, this movie takes it to an entirely different level. The movie is very challenging, but very exciting to us on that level.”

    13. That splash panel fight mentioned above? It runs 15 minutes, and is the first IMAX sequence the directors shot for the film. And yes, you will want to see in glorious, brainsplodey IMAX.

    14. That sequence also marks the first salvo of the war between heroes, according to the Russos. And while the teams are divided here, the Russos teased that the line-ups aren’t permanent. “The movie kind of evolves,” Anthony said. “There’s a moment in the movie where this [line-up] is the division.”

    15. Much like “Three Days of the Condor” inspired the directors on “Winter Soldier,” they turned to other films to help them create the “psychological drama” underlining “Civil War.” Those films include: “Seven” (!?), “Fargo,” “The Godfather,” and some De Palma.

    16. The directors are very impressed and satisfied with Chadwick Boseman‘s take on Black Panther.
“He brings real gravitas to the role,” Joe said. The scene we saw being filmed was the first day that the character appeared on set in costume. And when the actor came out on set, according to Joe, “there were some comic book fans here who were just tearing up. It’s a real moment for people to see this character for the first time on screen.”

Joe added that Boseman is “playing the character with a real intensity and a real grace. He’s got a movement style that he brought because he has a background in martial arts and it’s fascinating. He moves like none of the other characters in the universe. We really distinguished him.”

    17. Of all the characters appearing in this film — and there are a lot — Black Widow and Black Panther proved the most challenging (and interesting) for the directing duo.

“We made some strong choices with Natasha in this movie, and it’s a tricky arc that she has to play in the film,” Joe said. Anthony added that the challenges with Black Panther center on him “entering the movie
as an outsider, and there’s a lot of conflict surrounding him in the film. There’s a lot of tension around that, it’s great dramatic tension. It works great on a story level, but it’s intense.”

    18. One character they remained very tight-lipped about was the inclusion of Spider-Man. Arguably the worst kept secret in Hollywood is that the new Spidey will make his first appearance in the MCU courtesy of “Civil War.” But when asked how that will happen, or whose side Peter Parker will be on, the directors dodged it with a smile.

    19. They had no problem, however, revealing that Black Widow and Scarlet Witch share a scene together. In fact, their scene together opens the movie.

    20. The Russos also dropped something Vision fans will be very happy to see: Vision will appear in civilian attire. Joe said that figuring out that aspect of the character “was a fun conversation because he sort of projects his own clothing so it’s an interpretation of his personality. He’s rather dashing. It looks really good.”

    Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan

While the relationship between Cap and Iron Man drives the film’s core conflict, it’s the dynamic between best friends Cap and Bucky that serves as the film’s beating heart, according to Evans.

“This is a huge relationship. This is a huge piece of [Cap’s] history, it’s a huge piece of his struggle, just the guilt that he must have [over losing Bucky]. So there’s plenty to play with.”

    22. The last time we saw Bucky, he was inside Cap’s museum — staring at his own section of it. So where do we find Bucky when “Civil War” starts? The actors (shocker) wouldn’t say. But Stan did tease this: “Whatever notions you had about that post-credits scene, where you see him in the museum, and obviously he’s staring at himself — whatever ideas you got from that scene, keep thinking about those and go with your own thoughts on that.” Um, okay. Thanks. Good talk, bud.

    23. Of all the Avengers Evans’ character shares screentime with, the actor revealed his favorite: Black Widow. Fans can expect their relationship in “Winter Soldier” to grow even as they initially find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. “I’ve grown to really like my scenes with Scarlett,” Evans said. “Something about that relationship, because I don’t think it drifts into a romantic place. I think it’s a place where we each just need somebody. She’s kinda been a loner for a long time and probably avoided friendships for professional purposes. And I had no friends because I was frozen. And now it’s like a really nice brother and sister bond. There’s some nice scenes in this one.”
    24. When asked how the rest of the Avengers respond to Cap’s need to find Bucky, considering he was working as an assassin for HYDRA, Evans answered: “They sympathize. Cap’s done nothing but give himself to this group, so I think they understand the value of what it means to Steve to find him. And especially after [Hawkeye’s] been brainwashed, [Black Widow’s] been misled, we’ve all had our share of being taken advantage of, so I don’t think they hold [Bucky] completely responsible for some of his actions.

    25. Evans is very excited about how the movie pairs off certain members for battle, promising that the Russos have created action scenes that rival the exceptional set pieces seen in “Winter Soldier.” “These fights are not gonna be boring,” Evans promised. “The way the Russos shot it, It just felt good. I think they’re gonna outdo themselves on this one. There will be a lot of team combats.”

You can see all those not-boring fights for yourself when “Civil War” hits theaters May 6.

  • Anthony Mackie Talks ‘Triple 9’ Deleted Scenes, Working With Wonder Woman

In the new crime drama, “Triple 9,” Anthony Mackie plays a corrupt cop who pulls bank robberies on the side and isn’t happy when he’s saddled with a straitlaced new partner, played by Casey Affleck.

The great cast includes Kate Winslet as a ruthless Russian mob boss, Woody Harrelson as Affleck’s uncle — who’s also a cop — and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus and Aaron Paul as members of Mackie’s bank-robbing gang.

Mackie sat down with Moviefone to talk about his favorite heist movie, the deleted scenes he hopes resurface on the DVD, and hanging with “Mr. Atlanta,” T.I.

Moviefone: This has a terrific heist scene in it — so what’s your favorite heist movie?

Anthony Mackie: Eddie Murphy did this movie called “Harlem Nights.” The premise was that the mob was bullying them and they had to pay a fee to do business in Harlem. And they turn it and basically jack the mob for all their money and leave town. The only movie with more one-liners is “Coming to America.” And those are my two favorite movies of all time.

What are the “Do’s and Don’ts” about bank robbing?

(Laughs) The Do’s: Be fast. Wear gloves. Be well orchestrated. The Don’ts: Don’t go slow. Don’t hang around afterwards. Don’t lose your gloves. I think the big thing is, as long as you don’t hurt anyone in the act of bank robbing, you’re okay. I think once you go in and start shootin’ people, they’re gonna find you. Cuz nobody cares about a rich dude losin’ a P.O. box. They care about people being hurt.

The film has a scary-good ensemble cast. Who were you disappointed you didn’t get any scenes with?

Of course, Kate. I admire Kate for the work that she’s done. She’s done some really, really good movies. If you want people to know you’re a great actress, you have to change your name to Kate. Of course I was disheartened I didn’t have any scenes with her. I’ve worked with Woody before, and he’s just a hoot to be around. He’s such his own person that not having worked with him in this movie… we were on set at the same time and I’m like, “C’mon, man! Shouldn’t we be in the same room at the same time or something?” So those two were kind of frustrating that we didn’t have scenes together.

At one point in the movie, Casey Affleck tells you he’s a “total badass.” So which one of you is the bigger badass in real life?

I would say Casey’s wife [Summer Phoenix] is the biggest badass. She kind of trumps both of us. She’s badass. If there’s one thing Casey is not, it’s a badass. I would say the only person who’s further away from being a badass than Casey is Screech. Was there more to your character’s backstory than we see in the film?

Watching it, there’s certain scenes that [director] John [Hillcoat] deleted, so I’m interested in hearing the feedback once the DVD comes out. Because if this movie were two hours and 15 minutes, it would be a completely different movie. Completely different. [The stuff that was cut] was more character-driven. I feel like this is still character-driven, but what they took out was more in-depth. But I think the DVD version is going to be really interesting if people like it now.

We see why Chiwetel Ejiofor gets into these kinds of heists, but we don’t really see why your character does it — apart from the money.

One of the things that was taken out of the movie … my character’s a young detective. He’s flamboyant. You see him in the strip club. You see him in his hot-rod Mustang. He’s that guy. But with [my character] Marcus Belmont, what’s really cool is his appreciation for being a police officer and the honor of being promoted to detective. That’s one of the things I feel that comes with him that I really liked when I read the script, and I think you’ll see once all the scenes are put back into the movie.

But there are some pretty big action scenes here. Did you get a chance to say your catchphrase “cut the check” during filming?

Oh, every day. I don’t care, when I earn my money, I make sure everybody knows they gotta cut the check. Now this movie, it was a really fun shoot. Runnin’ down the street and shootin’ and doin’ all this stuff was fun to us.

So we had the scene where we’re tactically going in to the projects to arrest this guy who’s a drug dealer. And I’m behind the car and Casey’s running away from him. My cover is getting shot at, so I had to run from behind the bushes, and jump onto a mat behind the car. So every time, goofin’ off, I would try to jump and land on the car and roll onto the ground. So John would yell, “Anthony, stop doing that!” And I’m like, “Fine.” So I come out the bushes, I run, I jump and I start shooting and he’s like, “Perfect!” I’m like,”Cut the check.” [Laughs]

You were trying to give him more.

I was trying to give him more! I was trying to give him a burger with many condiments and he just wanted a plain burger. So I gave him a plain burger.

I know you like to listen to music on set. And Chris Evans has said that your iTunes collection is better than his. What did you listen to on this set?

I listened to a lot of hip hop. Because we were in Atlanta, I had everything Jermaine Dupri, OutKast, Organized Noize, and Goodie Mob on constant rotation. And because this was such a grimy movie, we had to be in such a mindset to shoot everyday, it was all Atlanta funk hip hop all day.

You’re a fan of the soundtrack?

I love the music in this movie. I worked with T.I. In “Ant-Man” and it was so funny because T.I. is like Mr. Atlanta. My goal in shootin’ this movie was, “I need to hang out with T.I., so I’m gonna go to the places I hear T.I. likes to hang out at and I’ma hang out with T.I.” So I get his number and I text him, “Yo, Tip. It’s Mackie. I’m in Atlanta and I’m shootin’. Let’s get up.” So T.I. introduced me to Atlanta. That was my goal in this movie.

Gal Gadot is also in the movie. It seems like you can’t have a movie now without someone from the Marvel Universe and someone from the DC universe in it.

Pretty much. The last two years have been insane. And what they’re doing now is really interesting, DC and Marvel. Instead of doing the Superman movie with just Superman, there’s Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. And instead of doing Captain America with just Cap, you have everybody in the movie. So instead of one dude, you have a full cast of actors. And fortunately, Marvel casts really good actors. So if you’re in a Marvel movie, it’s not because of the way you look, it’s because of the way you act.

What’s the biggest difference in making a huge movie like the “Captain America” films versus a smaller one like this?

It’s way less people. [Laughs] You work on a Marvel movie, you never see 90 percent of the people who are working on it. And it’s just expansive. You shoot a Marvel movie, the entire city of L.A. is working on that movie. With this, it was very intimate. It was about John’s vision and the story he wanted to tell, as opposed to spectacle that the movie could become … It’s more about the characters and the story and the idea of what happens.

You have to put yourself in a certain mindset or position to watch a movie like this because it’s introspective. It makes you think about and challenge yourself, as opposed to a movie for movie’s sake.

    “Triple 9” hits theaters Friday.

  • Anthony Mackie: ‘Civil War’ May Be First Superhero Movie Up for Best Picture

The 2016 Oscars are this Sunday, February 28, but the 2017 Academy Awards may just nominate “Captain America: Civil War” for Best Picture. Oooooor they may not. But Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon, is throwing superlatives around about the third Cap movie, which comes out May 6.

Here’s what he told BBC Radio (via Heroic Hollywood):

“It’s Marvel’s best movie thus far… It’s really, really good. It’s because it’s more of an acting movie than an action movie. I feel like the story is very concise and interesting, and you get to see Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson and Mark Ruffalo and everybody just do really, really good acting. And then there’s action in it. I think it might be the first superhero movie that might be up for Best Picture.”

Oh, really? The Oscars push is interesting, but this interview was also singled out by outlets for the mention of Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk). Up to this point, The Hulk wasn’t expected to be in “Civil War,” but Mackie also said in the interview that “They tie each story into the next movie,” which Heroic Hollywood took as a possible hint that the Hulk will be in a post-credits scene to tie into “Thor: Ragnarok.”

Hulk or no Hulk, the hype is real on “Civil War” so we’ll have to wait and see if critics and audiences agree about the high level of awesome.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Jennifer Lawrence’s 2 Most Embarrassing Moments, Justin Theroux’s Eyebrow-Acting Contest

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Come dance with “The Tonight Show” Wednesday night to promote the final “Hunger Games” movie, and you had to know Jimmy Fallon was going to put her to work. They discussed their shared habit of falling down a lot, and Jen insisted it’s not a shtick. She also shared her two most embarrassing stories, because Jen wouldn’t be Jen without endearing, relatable anecdotes: The first involved a woman who was NOT Elizabeth Taylor, but Jen really thought she was; the other involved the real Francis Ford Coppola, her bare feet, and a revealed thong.
On to the dancing! Jen and Jimmy talked about how there’s this instructional dance video that airs on QVC at 3 a.m., featuring two dancers who look a lot like the two of them. Cue the “Come Dance With Us!” video, with J&J rocking some amazingly outrageous outfits (those sleeves — keep them) and showing off dance moves like “Lunchbox Salute,” “Bowling Confetti,” and “Disco Binoculars.” Gold. Obviously, they should really make a dance video and put it on the market.
Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth was on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” insisting that Jen does not fall down at purpose. “She is terrible at walking.” He told a story of walking around in London with her when one of her heels broke down at the back of a theater. She also fell in Spain and Berlin. “I’m constantly surprised by how much she falls down without trying at all.” He just said she’s “a clumsy, clumsy girl.” Maybe she should skip the long gowns and only wear flats?
Jimmy Kimmel spoofed the extension of the “Fast & Furious” franchise with more prequels and spinoffs by showing a (fake) new trailer from the perspective of fuzzy dice:
Justin Theroux — who is CRUSHING it over on “The Leftovers” — was on “The Late Show” and challenged Stephen Colbert to an eyebrow-acting contest. Love it.
This sounds odd, but it’s kind of touching. John Cleese told an interesting story about his mother, who was an anxious and depressed woman with a black sense of humor. That was the way he could communicate with her. He didn’t want her to be depressed but she’d be “a little bit down this week” for “50 f–king years.” To try and cheer her up, he had a moment of inspiration that was a high point of his creativity. When she was about 92, she gave him all these reasons why she didn’t want to go on living. He said, if she still feels this way next week, he has a friend in Fulham he can call and he could come down and kill her. She was surprised, then howled with laughter. Justin Bieber did Carpool Karaoke with James Corden before, but here’s “Vol. 2,” featuring a very interesting conversation about the origin of the “Beliebers.”
Last but not least, here are Anthony Mackie and Rainn Wilson talking about their wives. Rainn just celebrated 20 years of marriage. (!) Anthony said he met his wife when he was 7. “She was the meanest person in the world.” She used to beat him up and take his lunch money. They got together when he was 28, after they hadn’t seen each other in about 20 years.

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt Returning to ‘Lip Sync Battle’ vs. Seth Rogen & Anthony Mackie

lip sync battle, joseph gordon-levitt, seth rogen, anthony mackieLip Sync Battle” crown again, and is teaming up with his “The Night Before” costars Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie for an epic holiday special edition of the Spike show.

Gordon-Levitt, Rogen, and Mackie are set to throw down later this month, joining hosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen for some holiday-themed debauchery, complete with Rogen playing a naughty Elf on the Shelf and an appearance from rappers Run-D.M.C., who perform (well, “perform,” since they’ll probably be lip syncing, too) their classic “Christmas in Hollis.” Other special guests are set to drop in, too.

But the real draw will be to see if Gordon-Levitt can once again claim “Lip Sync Battle” glory, following his The Tonight Show,” where he went head-to-head with Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant. While Fallon granted both men the crown, audiences seemingly sided with Gordon-Levitt, and he’s not likely to leave the “Lip Sync Battle” stage this time without sole possession of the championship belt — even if he’s gotta dress in drag as Janet Jackson to do it.

Check out a preview of the fun below. The “Lip Sync Battle” holiday special airs on November 19 on Spike.

  • Why Paul Bettany Fired Himself From His New Movie

    “The Tonight Show.”

“I lied,” Paul said. “Because I’m British, I can lie and people tend to think it’s true, and I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll be in it,’ to try and raise some sort of paltry financing for it. And then I fired myself, which was quite humiliating. As a director, I hired myself as the actor, and then I fired myself.” Jimmy joked that he just didn’t get along with himself. Paul upped that, quipping, “I wouldn’t perform on the casting couch.” There you go. You don’t put out, you don’t get in!

This is the first time Paul has directed a movie and he said it completely changed his perspective. “It’s so much harder [than acting],” he said. “I will never ask a difficult question as the sun is going down ever again.” Paul said he had this fantasy that he and his wife would be on set together and she would ask questions about her character and he’d say well, let’s sit down and talk about it. “But the truth was, every time she asked me a question, I just saw a huge clock in front of her face.” He just wanted her to quickly spit out the question so they could get back to work while they still had the light.

It’s a good thing he fired himself or maybe Paul the actor would’ve asked Paul the director about his own character and gotten into a tiff with himself. That probably happened to Mel Gibson during “Braveheart.”

Here’s Paul talking to Jimmy about “Shelter,” including a clip from the movie:

  • A-List Bad Cops Do the Dirty in Violent ‘Triple 9’ Red Band Trailer

The streets are sexy, dirty, scary, brutal, and did we mention sexy (that’s for you, Norman Reedus) in the new red band trailer for “Triple 9.”

The code “Triple 9” is used for an officer down. This heist movie, directed by John Hillcoat and starring a dozen Hollywood standouts — including Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Norman Reedus, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, to name a few — follows a group of corrupt cops and criminals who plan the murder of a police officer to pull off a major heist.

The trailer shows as much sex, violence, bad words, and bare boobs and booty as you’d expect from a crime thriller red band trailer. It starts with Woody Harrelson chiding fellow officer Casey Affleck that his job is not to make a f–king difference, it’s to “out monster the monster and get home at the end of the night.”

Cue a creepy version of “This Little Piggy…” as we see cops vs. civilians, stuff blowing up, and what looks like several Deadpool cosplay characters running around at the end. (Probably not their intention, but still.) The trailer teases, “On these streets, nothing is black and white.”

    Check it out:

    Watch the trailer.

“Triple 9” is scheduled for release on February 19, 2016. February is not known to be an impressive release month for movies, but maybe this will be one of the exceptions. After all, “summer” starts earlier ever year!

  • D23’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Footage Did Not Leak and Twitter Can’t Cope

Congratulations, D23, you must have stronger superpowers than Comic-Con. SDCC was a trailer sieve, but apparently Disney is better at keeping things on lock, ’cause no one seems to be able to track down a leaked version of the “Captain America: Civil War” footage that played at the Anaheim, CA, Expo. What showed on August 15 wasn’t an actual “trailer” as much as a sizzle reel of scenes with Captain America (Chris Evans), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and company, plus “Ant-Man” Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) having a fanboy moment.

But reading detailed accounts of footage is no match for actually seeing the footage. Twitter clearly expected someone to shoot and share some blurry bad-angled video, so they waited from Saturday night to Sunday morning. And they kept waiting. And now they’re angry. And you know how Twitter gets when it’s angry. It gets hilarious.

Buck up, little campers, we’ll get through this together! Disney/Marvel won’t leave fans hanging forever, and the wait will just build anticipation. But if you want something to watch, here are Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie at D23, sharing details on the movie:
