    • Paramount Pictures made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Scary Movie’.
    • There was also a look at a new ‘Christmas Carol’ adaptation.

Given the tumultuous behind-the-scenes business activity of first the Skydance/Paramount acquisition and now the combined studios’ ongoing mission to buy Warner Bros., it’s fair to wonder how much of that will be referenced at the company’s 2026 CinemaCon presentation.

But as is more likely, we’re expecting a focus on movies including the new ‘Scary Movie’ entry and a fresh take on the ‘Street Fighter’ video game.

Unlike some of its competition, Paramount doesn’t have many of its big hitter franchises with ready entries, though we’ll likely get something from the early 2027 arrival of the fourth ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie.

Following a looong sizzle reel (narrated by Tom Cruise and ending with him chilling out on the lot’s iconic water tower), freshly minted Paramount/Skydance boss David Ellison took the stage to enthuse about storytelling and –– cross it off your bingo card! –– further confirm that a merged Paramount and Warner Bros. would commit to 30 movies a year theatrically, with healthy 45-day release windows.

There was also a lot of chat about the IP-based movies they’re developing –– expect more ‘Star Trek’, ‘Transformers’, ‘World War Z’ and ‘Top Gun’, plus a ‘Call of Duty’ movie. Oh, and following the success of the first film via Neon, the studio is the new home of the ‘Longlegs’ franchise. And we also learned that classic antagonists Shredder and Kang will show up in the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ sequel, due in 2027.

There wasn’t much on the fourth ‘Sonic’ beyond a quick video from the set that confirms Jim Carrey will be back. There was also a mention of Kristen Bell, who voices Amy Rose.

Eilish and director James Cameron (yes, that James Cameron) took the stage to showcase the tour movie (Live in 3D in case you forgot), with Cameron talking up how they developed new 3D tech to make the film –– and make it look amazing. He calls it a “VIP experience”.

Next to take the stage was the ‘Scary Movie’ cast (well, Marlon and Shawn Wayans and Anna Faris) discuss the new reboot (or sixth film) in the horror spoof series. “Nobody is safe” seems to be the mantra here, and the Wayans introduced some fresh footage from the movie.

Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s new film adaptsTomi Adeyemi‘s novel, featuring a woman blessed with magical powers by the gods and living in a place where you are forbidden to use them, teams up with a princess to summon the gods and bring down the oppressive regime.

A musical performance preceded the cast (including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Thuso Mbedu)  and  Prince-Bythewood to the stage to talk up the film. We also got footage.

The footage shows Viola Davis‘ Mama Agba and her allies smacking around some tax collectors. The film is a story about the struggle to bring back magic in a kingdom where magic users are routinely executed. The magic users have Targaryen-like white hair. We see one magician summon a tree fighter to battle enemy warriors. The movie looks unique.

We wondered at the time whether the likes of fellow franchise stalwarts Anna Faris (who played Cindy Campbell in a variety of the films) and Regina Hall (Brenda) will both also be back for this new one. Deadline has now confirmed that they will.

There are no details of what the new movie will be about but given that the original two films were primarily spoofs of ‘Scream,’ ‘The Exorcist’ and other horror classics, we’d expect some combination of riffs on the current crop of movies and tropes.

‘Weapons’, but with more fart gags, anyone?

The script this time comes from the brothers and Rick Alvarez, who is a regular Wayans contributor, having written the likes of ‘Fifty Shades of Black,’ ‘Sextuplets’ and ‘Naked.’

And Michael Tiddes, a fellow Wayans veteran, is in the director’s chair.

This is what Hall and Faris had to say about their return:

“We can’t wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn and Marlon — three men we’d literally die for (in Brenda’s case, again).”

Here’s what the brothers told Deadline about their comeback:

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new ‘Scary Movie’ and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”

When will the new ‘Scary Movie’ entry be in theaters?

Paramount has scheduled the movie for a June 12th, 2026 release date, and with cameras set to roll this October, it’ll be ready to make us laugh again next summer.

    • Conan O’Brien has landed a voice role in ‘Toy Story 5.’
    • He’ll bring the character of Smarty Pants to life.
    • The new movie will see our heroes challenged by new technology.

The ‘Toy Story’ movies have never exactly been short on star power, starting at the top with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen playing iconic duo Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

For the fifth entry –– yes, Pixar, while still putting out original movies is still also happy to lean on its veteran franchises when the right idea strikes –– some new blood has been recruited.

    6soIJRSMSLuWxYKRw3gHY5

Well, we say new… It’s perhaps a little tough to use that designator since Conan O’Brien (for it is he) has been working since the 1980s and has made a career largely as a comedy writer but also as a TV host for late night and a variety of other projects, including returning to host next year’s Academy Awards after a successful first time this past March.

For ‘Toy Story 5,’ O’Brien will voice the role of a new character called Smarty Pants, who we can imagine will be a witty but probably troublesome type for our regulars to run up against.

Disney announced O’Brien’s casting as part of the Consumer Products section of its Licensing Expo presentation on Monday. And the performer talked about landing the role on Instagram, joking that he’d hoped to play either Buzz or Woody, but is now convinced that Smarty Pants is the best role he could have won:

(L to R) Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) in Pixar Animation Studios’ ‘Toy Story.’

In case you forgot (since it was released back in 2019), ‘Toy Story 4’ ended with Woody and Buzz parting ways when the former joined Bo Peep (Annie Potts) to live a life as a “lost toy,” free from the constraints of being owned by a child.

Throughout the film, Woody struggled to find his place with Bonnie, as she no longer needed him as much as Andy did. Buzz, understanding Woody’s choice, assured him that Bonnie would be okay without him and supported Woody’s decision to start a new chapter.

Meanwhile, Buzz stayed with Bonnie, continuing to live with Jessie, Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger) and other toys, including the new addition of Forky (Tony Hale).

Stanton revealed at the last D23 that the central conflict of the latest film will involve the toys grappling with staying relevant in the age of technology.

The concept art revealed at the same event shows the toys looking sadly at their owner engrossed in a tablet, hinting at the emotional and humorous struggles they will face as they try to reclaim the child’s attention.

And Tim Allen has also been talking about the new movie.

This is what he told Collider:

“It’s a very, very clever story. I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it. It’s really clever. It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”

Here’s what what he told news channel WIVB 4:

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” he said. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Who else is working on ‘Toy Story 5’?

Few other details have been revealed about the new movie for either side of the camera.

We do know that McKenna Harris, who has worked on several other Pixar titles in various capabilities, is co-directing the movie with Stanton, and the latter worked on the script.

Beyond Allen and more recently Ernie Hudson (who inherits the role of Combat Carl from Carl Weathers), there has been no confirmation on the cast, but Hanks will naturally return and word on Jessie surely points to Joan Cusack already having recorded some material.

We’d be shocked if most of the main voice cast –– at least those whose characters feature prominently –– wouldn’t be back.

And there are reports of Anna Faris in an undisclosed role.

Moviefone: To begin with, Dave, what was it like for you to return to this franchise and work with Chloe again, and how has JJ changes since the first film?

Dave Bautista: Well, first, JJ is in total dad mode. In this film, it’s all about being a dad. His mission in life is to be a good dad. As far as coming back and stepping back into the role, it was just effortless. I knew who the character was. We’ve been friends for so many years now, and so it was very comfortable. There was no anxiety about performance. We were all so comfortable with each other. So, this one, it was just easier. It was effortless. Everything about it was. We shot the first one in the winter in Toronto and this film, we were in the summer in Cape Town and Rome. Everything was bigger and it was better, and it was fun. It was like being on vacation and it was like being on vacation with family. So, it was effortless. And it’s really cool because the kids who fell in love with the first ‘My Spy’, they’ve grown up too. They’ve grown up with Sophie.

MF: Chloe, can you talk about returning for this sequel and working with Dave again, and how has Sophie changed since the last time we saw her?

Chloe Coleman: Sophie is grown up. She’s a teenager now, which is kind of crazy to think about. I think it was bittersweet aging her up, honestly, because I feel like I’ve known her forever as this sassy little girl. So, I think it was important to keep her personality from the first film, but also bring her into this new world of high school and how the dynamic has changed with her and JJ of her wanting independence. She really relied on him a lot in the first film, but now she has friends, and her world has becoming bigger and it’s a lot for her to deal with. Then at the same time, she’s trying to save the world and doing all this awesome action stuff. So, it’s a lot but it’s cool.

Ken Jeong as Kim and Dave Bautista as JJ in 'My Spy The Eternal City.'

MF: Finally, Ken, can you talk about how your character fits into the story this time around and what was it like to work with Dave and Chloe again?

Ken Jeong: It was all the superlatives apply. It was just again, fit like a glove, so easy to come back. Then just so grateful to everyone and to Pete (Segal) for expanding my character and almost have a parallel story between my character and my character’s son, Colin. It is almost like a mirror to Sophie and JJ. I really believe the purpose of our dynamic is to just highlight and impress upon the deepening bond of Sophie and JJ. So, it was just an honor to be a part of that storytelling. I think that, and Dave and I always talk about this, we’re storytellers and just to contribute on that side of storytelling and giving you that mirror lane highway to Sophie and JJ, I was tracking while filming in it and it meant a lot that they trusted me to be a part of it.

Anna Faris in 'The Dictator,' from Paramount Pictures.
Anna Faris in ‘The Dictator,’ from Paramount Pictures.

Released in 2020, ‘My Spy’ represented a key stage in Dave Bautista’s career, particularly as a wrestler-turned-actor. Several of his tough guy antecedents had clocked in for a big-guy-cute-kid film, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger with ‘Kindergarten Cop’, Vin Diesel in ‘The Pacifier’ and Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Tooth Fairy’ and ‘The Game Plan’.

But unlike most of those, ‘My Spy’ is actually getting a sequel, with casting now announced for ‘My Spy: The Eternal City’. Anna Faris, Craig Robinson and Flula Borg are among the new faces joining the ensemble.

    What happened in ‘My Spy’

The first ‘My Spy’ –– which had been intended for theatrical release by STX Entertainment but was moved to Amazon when the pandemic closed cinemas –– starred Bautista as JJ, a CIA agent who is assigned on an undercover mission to surveil and potentially protect Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) and daughter Sophie (Chloe Coleman) when the former arms dealer partner of Kate’s dead husband suspects he may have smuggled the plans for a weapon back to his unsuspecting wife.

But while JJ and tech specialist Bobbi (Kristen Schaal) set up their operation in Kate and Sophie’s building, the precocious nine-year-old girl figures out exactly what JJ is up to and makes a deal –– if he’ll teach her spy craft, she won’t blow his cover.

JJ reluctantly agrees, and finds himself bonding with Sophie, and eventually falling for her mother, as the threats mount.

What’s the story of ‘My Spy: The Eternal City’?

The follow-up concerns a now teenage Sophie convincing JJ to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy where they both unwittingly end up pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA chief David Kim (Ken Jeong) and his son, Collin –– who’s also Sophie’s best friend.

Schaal and Jeong are back for the new movie, while Nicola Correia-Damude, Noah Dalton Danby and Devere Rogers are all reprising their roles.

Faris, Billy Barratt, Taeho K, Borg and Robinson are new to the story, but Amazon has yet to reveal the roles they’ll play.

Pete Segal, who directed the first movie, is back behind the camera, having worked on the script alongside writing duo Jon and Erich Hoeber. The cameras will be rolling this month.

“We were so delighted with the success of ‘My Spy.’ It is an absolute privilege to reunite with Pete Segal, Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, and the rest of the talented cast and filmmakers–along with some very exciting additions,” Amazon and MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “With the sequel, our Prime Video customers are in store for another dynamic story, complete with twists, hilarious performances, and even a little romance.”

  • New ‘Overboard’ Trailer Turns Rich Jerk Into Meal-Prepping Dad

Who wouldn’t love having a fake husband/slave to cook, clean, and watch the kids?

In the new trailer for the “Overboard” gender-swapped remake, Kate (Anna Faris) may feel a teensy bit bad for duping millionaire jerk Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez) into thinking he’s her poor, construction worker of a spouse after he gets amnesia from a boating accident.

But then he teaches one of her daughters how to ride a bike, organizes the refrigerator, and even takes her dancing. Suddenly, the situation no longer feels like “poetic justice” but something real.

“You guys are good together,” notes Kate’s bestfriend (Eva Longoria).

The 1987 original movie became beloved due to the insane chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Will similar sparks fly between Faris and Derbez? The trailer focuses more on Leonardo’s bumbling attempts at construction work, but we did get a brief glimpse of a salsa scene.

“Overboard” opens in theaters April 13.

  • Anna Faris Gets Revenge in the First ‘Overboard’ Remake Trailer

Eighties rom-com “Overboard,” which originally starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, is the latest flick set for a remake, this time featuring Anna Faris in a gender-swapped storyline. But after watching the first trailer, fans of the original may want to jump ship.

The premise sounds promising enough, with Faris playing Kate, a struggling single mom who gets a gig cleaning the opulent yacht of the filthy rich Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez), who also happens to be a huge jerk. The tables are turned, though, when Leonardo is tossed overboard, loses his memory, and Kate decides to get revenge by convincing him he’s her husband — and puts him to work, doing odd jobs and caring for “their” kids.

Unfortunately, despite Faris doing her best to follow in Hawn’s footsteps, the trailer is chock full of groan-worthy jokes and hammy acting that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in this reboot’s sea legs. But if you don’t mind some silly comedy (and are a fan of Faris, who still comes off insanely likable here despite some less than stellar material), this flick still has the potential to float your boat.

“Overboard,” also starring Eva Longoria, is due to set sail on April 20, 2018.

  • How T.J. Miller Made Comedy All Alone in the Voiceover Booth for The Emoji Movie

Comedians feed off laughter, which is why voicing a character for “The Emoji Movie” proved so challenging for T.J. Miller.

“It’s a strange place, the voiceover booth, because you’re alone,” he tells Made in Hollywood reporter Patrick Stinson. “And although you would rather be doing scenes with the other people, the nature of the game is you’re by yourself and you’re making these jokes in a vacuum. Everyone else is behind the glass. So you’re trying to make them laugh but you don’t hear their laughter.”

The best he could hope for was seeing the crew laugh, like human emojis.

Set inside a smartphone, “The Emoji Movie” tells the story of Gene (Miller), the only emoji that can change expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and a notorious code breaker called Jailbreak (Anna Faris). As they travel through other apps, the three emojis discover a great danger that could threaten their phone’s very existence.

For Miller, the character of Gene was one of two roles written just for him. “It made sense,” he says. “As soon as they told me it’s this guy who tries to be cool but can’t prevent himself from being stupid and embarrassed and excited and afraid, it made perfect sense to me.”

The other role tailored to him was that of i-R0k in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “Ready Player One.”

“As I was shooting with Steven Spielberg, I was like: Thank you so much,” says Miller. “I think it’s really funny to call him by his whole name all the time. So I’m like: Thank you so much, Steven Spielberg, for having me in your movie. I’m having such a good time, Steven Spielberg.”

And Miller never takes it for granted.

“Not only is that flattering and complimentary and very nice, it kind of makes you look at your own work and who you are as a comedian and go: I better live up to what they expect of me,” he says. “So it’s a very interesting experience.”

  • Anna Faris to Star in Gender-Swapped Remake of ‘Overboard’

Anna FarisAnna Faris will star in a remake of ’80s comedy “Overboard,” but she won’t be playing the Goldie Hawn role, The Wrap reports.

As MGM announced yesterday, the roles in the new version will be switched: Faris will be playing a single, working class mom who convinces a rich amnesiac (Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez) that he’s her husband.

Faris’s films include the “Mom.” Derbez is known for the film “Instructions Not Included,” which he directed, co-wrote and starred in. It set US and global box office records as the most successful Spanish-language film ever.

In the 1987 original, Goldie Hawn played a spoiled rich woman who falls off a boat and has no memory of who she is. Kurt Russell was the handyman who got revenge on his impossible-to-please client by telling her he’s his husband and putting her to work caring for his four children.

The original film was directed by Garry Marshall. Rob Greenberg (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Bob Fisher (“We’re the Millers”) will co-write and direct the remake.

A previously announced remake starring Jennifer Lopez never happened.

Another gender-swapped remake of another ’80s classic is already in the works: The update on “Splash” will star Channing Tatum as a merman and Jillan Bell (“Office Christmas Party’) as the human who falls for him.
