  • Sylvester Stallone Back for ‘Cliffhanger’ Sequel

    Sylvester Stallone in ‘Cliffhanger.’

Producer Neal Moritz has been looking to do something with 1993 action thriller ‘Cliffhanger’ for years now. He announced way back in 2009 that he was looking to reboot the concept (enthused by the success of J.J. Abrams’ first ‘Star Trek’ movie.

It has gone through different variations since then including the original plan to swap Sylvester Stallone’s sole hero for several younger climbers tackling peaks around the world, and a mysterious development from writer Joe Gazzam. Nothing, however, has come to fruition.

Now, though, it looks like it could finally be on, as Sylvester Stallone is back to star, with ‘Hunters’ Mark Bianculli cracking the script and ‘Angel has Fallen’s Ric Roman Waugh in the director’s chair (or climbing harness?)

    8074

What was the story of the original ‘Cliffhanger’?

Renny Harlin’s original movie proved that the ‘Die Hard’ formula needn’t necessarily be restricted to claustrophobic indoor settings, plonking mountain-rescue boy Stallone on the side of a snowy peak. Sly’s Gabe Walker was reluctantly trying to foil John Lithgow’s plan to recover $100m stolen from the US treasury and deposited in the Rockies after a mid-air transfer went somewhat awry. There were deaths by gun, gravity, drowning and stalactite. And it wasn’t all snow: there were caves too.

Where will we find Gabe Walker this time?

No one is saying what the actual plot of the new movie will be, save for Sly’s return. You just know, though, that the stakes (and probably the mountains) will be higher, and, we’d guess, there will be more on Walker’s team.

But can it live up to the original’s iconic scene of Gabe letting someone slip through his fingers. Climbing’s a dangerous sport, so you’ve got to figure there’ll be a body count.

Waugh said this about working on the new movie:

“Growing up with the biggest action films of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, ‘Cliffhanger’ was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

    Moritz was also enthusiastic:

“I’ll never forget the thrill I felt watching Sylvester Stallone in ‘Cliffhanger’. I am incredibly excited to be working with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and introduce this iconic story to a new generation of filmgoers around the world.”

Sly will produce this one and casting is now under way to find the actors to fill the roles around the leading man.

Lance Reddick, an actor who brought poise, gravitas and depth to even the smallest role, has died.

Best known for movies including the ‘John Wick’ series and TV shows including ‘The Wire’, ‘Fringe,’ and ‘Bosch,’ Reddick was 60.

    Who was Lance Reddick?

Born in 1962 in Baltimore, Reddick’s initial passion was for music; he attended the Peabody Preparatory Institute and completed a summer program on music theory and composition at the Walden School as a teenager. Yet acting calling to him: after earning his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in the 1980s to start attending the Yale School of Drama in 1991.

Reddick began his screen career in the mid-1990s, guesting on such series as ‘The Nanny’ and ‘New York Undercover’. Later in the decade, he appeared on the big screen in films including ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘The Siege’ before recurring on HBO’s Emmy-winning 2000 miniseries ‘The Corner’, which was based on David Simon’s book. The same year, he scored a role on fellow gritty HBO drama ‘Oz’.

But all that was prologue to the first of his most notable TV roles –– Simon cast him in ‘The Wire’ as Cedric Daniels, an iconic character who appeared throughout the show’s run. He also won fans for his work as Phillip Broyles in sci-fi drama ‘Fringe’.

More recently, he’s been back on the TV cop drama beat with ‘Bosch’. But his career has been incredibly varied, Reddick showing up on shows such as ‘The Blacklist’, ‘Castle’, ‘Intelligence’, ‘Castlevania’, ‘Corporate’, ‘The Legend of Vox Machina,’ and Netflix‘s ‘Resident Evil.’

Movie-wise, he’s enjoyed a long and successful career that takes in a wide variety of films including ‘White House Down’, ‘Little Woods’, ‘Angel has Fallen’ and ‘One Night in Miami…’ But perhaps he’s become best known as Charon, the stoic, badass concierge of the Continental hotel in the ‘John Wick’ movies.

Reddick has a few films left in which audiences can enjoy his work: he’s in the remake of ‘White Men Can’t Jump’, due out this year, ‘Saint Sebastian’, ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ (which is still in production), and ‘Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’, which stars Ana de Armas. He’s also playing Zeus in the new Disney+ adaptation of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’, which should be out next year.

Most recently out promoting ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, which is in theaters next week, the actor was found dead of natural causes at his home in Studio City. Reddick is survived by his wife, Stephanie Reddick, and children, Yvonne Nicole Reddick and Christopher Reddick.

Secret Service agent Mike Banning is at it again.

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for “Angel Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler, and there is no rest for the weary. In the sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen,” Butler’s Banning is not only trying to protect the president (Morgan Freeman) but also clear his name after he’s framed for an assassination attempt.

The trailer shows Banning discussing migraines he’s been having. He claims they started after a concussion he got in a car accident, but from the rest of the footage we see, there are bigger risks in his life than riding in a car. He becomes the subject of a massive manhunt, and yet, in spite of the danger, he seems to have a plan.

“Don’t worry about finding me,” he says at one point. “I’ll find you.”

    Watch below.

Butler and Freeman star alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, and Piper Perabo. The cast also includes Nick Nolte and Danny Huston.

“Angel Has Fallen” opens Aug. 23.

Life isn’t getting any less exciting for Gerard Butler‘s Secret Service agent character, Mike Banning.

The new “Angel Has Fallen” trailer is here, and it looks as action-packed as its predecessors, 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen” and 2016’s “London Has Fallen.” Butler reprises his role as Banning, who works to protect President Allan Trumball, again played by Morgan Freeman. It’s no easy feat — there’s an attempt on the president’s life early on in the trailer, and Banning is framed for the crime. He goes on the run as he tries to clear his name and unravel the plot.

“The president is not safe,” he says. “They’re trying to finish the job, and I’m not going to stop until I prove who did this.”

The film is directed by Ric Roman Waugh, and the cast also includes Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper PeraboNick Nolte, and Danny Huston.

‘Angel Has Fallen,’ Third Film in Gerard Butler Trilogy, Is Happening

    Lionsgate

Can’t get enough of Gerard Butler saving the world as Secret Service man Mike Banning?

Good news: There’s a third “Fallen” film: “Angel Has Fallen,” the sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen,” will be out August 23, 2019.

This time, he’s got to save the president (Morgan Freeman) from a planned attack on Air Force One. That sounds… familiar.

Except that, kinda like Jack Bauer, he’s been framed for an assassination attempt on the president and is on the run.

    Good luck with that, Banning.

The cast includes Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Nick Nolte, Danny Huston, and Tim Blake Nelson, so any of them could be this movie’s scene-chewing villain.
