In theaters on April 24 is ‘Over Your Dead Body’, an adaptation of a dark Norwegian comedy that stars Jason Segel (‘Shrinking’) and Samara Weaving (‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’) as a couple who have deadly plans for each other.

Marriages where the passion has long cooled have been a fertile source for bloody comedies in the past, including ‘The War of the Roses’ (remade recently as ‘The Roses’) into that genre steps ‘Over Your Dead Body’, which boasts the comic stylings of Jason Segel and the comedy/action chops of Samara Weaving. But does it deliver?

    Script and Direction

Adapted from the Norwegian film ‘The Trip’ (which was co-written and directed by Tommy Wirkola), the new movie features a script from Nick Kocher (‘Pizza Movie’) and Brian McElhaney (‘Plus One’) that sets up the bad romance between Segel and Weaving’s characters before throwing all manner of comically violent twists in. It doesn’t always work, but when it hits, it hits hard.

Jorma Taccone, the Lonely Island co-founder, shows a knack for staging violent set pieces here, and keeps the movie feeling fun.

Segel and Weaving are excellent as the central pair, but kudos also to Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis and Keith Jardine, who all give committed, loopy performances.

If you watch one action comedy this year where Samara Weaving regrets her choices and fights for her life, make it ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’. But if you’ve room for two, then ‘Over Your Dead Body’ has plenty to offer.

‘Over Your Dead Body’ receives 69 out of 100.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and the challenges of remaking ‘The Trip’?

Jorma Taccone: Well, this is based on a Norwegian movie called ‘The Trip’, originally called ‘In Bad Days’ by Tommy Wirkola, and it’s a very funny movie. Tommy did movies like ‘Violent Night’. I was really a big fan of all his stuff. He’s more of an action-comedy guy. I’m more of a comedy-action guy. So, there’s a Venn diagram there. The original movie is very dark. It’s angry but it’s very funny too. I was very interested in, one, what a different cast would bring to it. There are some pretty big changes that have happened with our bad guys. When I read the original script, I was really impressed that Nick (Kocher) and Brian (McElhaney), who are very funny writers, had captured the tone that I really wanted to present, which is the characters being a bit more redeemable and really trying to earn the ending of the movie. It’s a series of tricks that this movie is doing of threading all these different needles. It’s like three movies in one. It’s this suspense/thriller, into almost a home invasion, into an action movie and it just ramps. So, it was pushing the comedy, which is obviously my heart, not wanting to break anything and having the reality of the world. But really doing all those tones, having all these twists and turns, and having the comedy stitch it all together in this way that felt like such an awesome challenge. Showing different shades of things that maybe people don’t expect from me.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to filming the action sequences?

JT: I mean, there’s a lot of cool set pieces in this movie. With the days that you have and the time that you have, it’s always challenging to get. A half a page of action lines can take a full day to shoot. So, it’s always like that. There’s a whole action set piece that goes all around the front yard and there’s brutal stuff that happens. There are maybe ten different gags that happen that are just really over the top violent and it’s so fun. It’s also funny and disturbing. So, that was a fun one to block and choreograph with 87North Productions, who are known for ‘Bullet Train’, ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘John Wick’. So, I had the best stunt team on the planet. Then I’m also weaving all my dumb comedy into it as well. So, it was those moments that you’re just like, “This is so fun to have so many different things going on in one scene.”

MF: Can you talk about the music you used in the film?

JT: I’m obsessed with audio. There’s all these EDM songs that are in the movie that I got Karen Gillan to do. So, she did this song, and Samara Weaving does a song. But if there is chaos, there’s even more chaos with audio and there’s this crazy song happening. So, it was fun to build all that stuff up.

MF: Finally, what was it like putting this cast together and working with them on set?

JT: Well, one of the things I’ve been saying, which I think holds very true, is that my wife (director Marielle Heller) was saying that there’s a head of every department and there’s always a head of the acting department. Jason Siegel was absolutely that for me. He was the hub of the wheel that we first got. Then to get Samara who works so well with him, and she’s so funny in this movie. She’s playing an Australian too, which was great for her improv to just be able to go toe to toe with Jason. There’s so much fun between them. But then Timothy Olyphant, who was difficult to convince, but I did it. Then him and Juliette are so funny. Then, Keith Jardine, who is mostly known for MMA fighting, but he’s been in a ton of stuff. He’s the sweetest man on the planet and he’s so funny in this. Then, Paul Guilfoyle, who’s unbelievable as this dad character. So, I got incredibly lucky. But Jason was the start of that, of the ball rolling towards this incredible cast.

  • Bill Hader & Jay Pharoah Agree Justin Bieber Was Worst-Behaved ‘SNL’ Host

“Saturday Night Live” alumni Bill Hader and Jay Pharoah just called out some musicians on their bad “SNL” behavior.

The topic came up on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” because fans only ever want to know the juicy stuff — your least favorite costars, the worst person who did this, etc. No one ever asks for positives.

In this case, that was bad news for Justin Bieber. Here’s that part of the talk:

Caller: “Who was the worst behaved musical guest or host during your time at ‘SNL’?”

Bill Hader: “Everybody wants to know worsts!”

    Jay Pharoah: “We both know.”

    Bill: “It was Bieber.”

    Jay nodded.

Andy Cohen: “You talked on [Howard] Stern about that.”

Bill: “Yeah, Bieber was — he just was in a bad place. Maybe he’s in a better place, but back then it was rough.”

Jay: “I saw Kanye [West] yank somebody, that was pretty hilarious.”

Bill: “Everyone’s usually on great behavior. Everyone’s very excited and great behavior, most time it’s 100 percent. Yeah, Bieber’s the only one in my experience. I think it was just, he seemed exhausted or at the end of a rope.”

Justin Bieber, now 24, was musical guest in 2010 and both host and musical guest in February 2013.

During his 2013 talk on Howard Stern, Bill Hader had contrasted Justin Bieber’s behavior with another SNL host, Justin Timberlake:

“Justin Bieber showed up with like 20 guys and every time, you know, when you’re backstage it’s very small constrictive place. And he had a guy holding a slice of pizza, he had a guy holding a Diet Coke. You’re going on stage and you’re trying to fight through all these people to get dressed.

Timberlake it was just him, he’s a real class act that guy. He was great, and also the guy doesn’t show up with anybody. It’s just him. He’s just wandering the halls and my wife visited the show and she thought like he was one of the crew guys hanging out on the set. She was like, ‘Oh my gosh! Whoa!’ and he was like, ‘Hey, how are you?’”

Hader wasn’t a total Hater, though. He did tell Stern that Mariah Carey probably had even more people in her entourage than Bieber. And he did have some compliments for young JB:

“I had nice chats with him when we were doing the scenes. He was a nice guy, a nice kid. You know he was doing the scenes and trying to do the best scene he can.”

Bill Hader just returned to “SNL” as host on March 17 to promote his new HBO show “Barry.” “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman will host SNL on Saturday, April 7.

  • Sarah Jessica Parker ‘Heartbroken’ Kim Cattrall Said They Were Never Friends

Sorry, SJP, she’s just not that into you.

You’ve probably been following the back-and-forth professional breakup between “Sex and the City” costars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall.

It all started last fall with the revelation that “Sex and the City 3” would not be happening — because Cattrall didn’t want to return as Samantha. SJP made some comments about how sad it was, ’cause they had a script and were all ready to go. Cattrall didn’t appreciate being positioned as the bad guy — especially when there were rumors that she made “demands,” and her only demand was that she didn’t want to do a third movie.

Cattrall then did an interview on Piers Morgan’s show, distancing herself from entire cast. She singled out Sarah Jessica Parker for criticism, saying, “I think she could have been nicer” about how SATC3 was handled.

Well, SJP was on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” last night, and Cohen read off a question from a fan:

“What was your reaction to Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan that you were never friends, just colleagues.”

    Here’s SJP’s response:

“Just heartbroken. I mean that whole week — you [Andy Cohen] and I spoke about it endlessly, ’cause I was just. I don’t know. I was really — I found it very upsetting, because that’s not the way I recall our experience. It’s sad, but I always think that what ties us together is this singular experience. It was a professional experience, but it became personal because it was years and years of our lives. So I’m hoping that that eclipses anything that’s been recently spoken. That many years spent doing something so special that people had a connection with it is such a privilege.”

Watch her talk about it, and see Andy audition to be the new Samantha Jones:

  • Zoe Kravitz Recalls Charlize Theron & Tom Hardy ‘Beef’ on ‘Mad Max’ Set

“Mad Max: Fury Road” stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy weren’t exactly besties on set, this is known, and their co-star Zoe Kravitz just confirmed that she witnessed the tension, adding some perspective to help fans understand the context.

Kravitz played one of the wives Theron’s Imperator Furiosa aimed to save, with frenemy backup from Hardy’s Max Rockatansky. Kravitz was on “Watch What Happens Live” to promote “Rough Night,” and candidly answered a fan’s question on the Theron/Hardy feud.

Caller: “Did you witness any beef between Charlize and Tom Hardy on the set of ‘Mad Max’?”

Kravitz: “Huh. [after a brief pause] Yeah.”

Andy Cohen: “It was reported that they didn’t get along.”

Kravitz: “They didn’t get along. We were also in the desert for so long. I think everyone was tired and confused and homesick, and we saw nothing but sand for six months. It’s just, you go crazy, you do.”

Cohen: “What was the issue? What did it come down to?”

Kravitz: “I actually don’t know if it was one issue. I just think they weren’t vibing. […] It was like summer camp, you know? At some point, everyone has like some kind of issue with somebody ’cause it’s just the way people are.”

On a semi-related and just plain interesting note, did you know that Zoe Kravitz’s father Lenny Kravitz was once engaged to Nicole Kidman? Zoe and Nicole just worked together on HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and Andy asked Zoe if that was weird on set. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t. Because … apparently they were vibing just fine.

  • ‘This Is Us’: Chrissy Metz Defends Chris Sullivan’s Use of ‘Fat Suit’ for Toby

“This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz (Kate Pearson) responded to a fan who called it “ridiculous” that actor Chris Sullivan wears a fat suit to play her co-star/love interest Toby.

In case you didn’t know, this is how Chris Sullivan looks in real life:

“Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen asked Metz about Sullivan’s fat suit during Thursday’s episode, and the actress politely disagreed with the fan who thought it was “ridiculous”:

“I appreciate your opinion, and everyone has one, and that’s great. I just feel that — we tested a lot of gentleman who were bigger. And I get it. Like, people think the authenticity is kind of ruined by that. But Chris has been heavier, and I think he does understand the plight of being overweight. And also, he was the best man for the job. And people wear prosthetics all the time — it’s just weight as opposed to, like, a nose or a chin.”

Andy Cohen noted that Metz herself wore a large prosthetic suit for in “American Horror Story.” Metz agreed, saying she basically wore a “couch.” “It’s just the name of the game.”

FYI, she said she’s waiting by the phone for Ryan Murphy to ask her to return to AHS in any way.

    Watch the “fat suit” Q&A:

“This Is Us” Season 1 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.

  • Jennifer Lawrence Nicknamed a Disliked Celebrity ‘Pickle’

    US-ENTERTAINMENT-PREMIERE-PASSENGERSFeel the burn, Pickle.

Jennifer Lawrence has a lot of celebrity friends — Amy Schumer, Emma Stone, Chris Pratt, etc. — but she does not love all of her fellow famous folk.

JLaw was recently on “Watch What Happens Live” with her best friend Laura Simpson, and host Andy Cohen had them play a game called “Shush, You BFF Lush.” Somehow, Simpson couldn’t recall Lawrence’s celebrity crush — Larry David — even though the star had already revealed that publicly. Simpson had the more private dirt, though.

First, she was asked to reveal “One celebrity your BFF refuses to do a movie with.” Simpson had a sly smile but took a drink, her way out of answering that particular question. It’s possible we got hints to that in the nicknames. Simpson was asked to reveal “Without naming names, the meanest thing [Lawrence] has said about a celebrity.” That’s when the naughty (Mean Girl-ish) nicknames came out.

Simpson: “There’s somebody that we — there’s a lot of nicknames for certain celebrities. … There’s The Lady, there’s Pickle… Uh, who else do we have?”

Lawrence: “Well, The Lady has different variations. There’s the Raging Lady, the Lady in Red, the Lady in Waiting.”

Watch the clip:Is that all one Lady or is there more than one? If there are several, that’s a sad commentary on how many “lady” celebs she doesn’t like. Pickle sounds like a dude, and maybe we shouldn’t know how he got that nickname. The names will probably be revealed in a memoir someday, but for now fans have been left to guess.

  • ‘Friends’ Stars Asked About Sleeping Together in First NBC Tribute Promo

1996 THE CAST OF THE TV HIT SERIES "FRIENDS"NBC’s upcoming special is ostensibly a tribute to sitcom director James Burrows, but let’s be honest: It’s a tribute to ’80s-’00s TV nostalgia, especially for “Friends” fans. It’s not really a “Friends” reunion without Matthew Perry, but he’ll still be part of the show via a separate taped segment. The other five — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer — gathered for the special, which was recently taped, and NBC just shared the first promo.

In the video, we see shots of interviews with the casts of several classic sitcoms, including “Cheers,” “Taxi,” “Frasier,” “Mike & Molly,” “Will & Grace,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and, yeah, “Friends.”

The promo ends with a glimpse of the “Friends” panel, with Jennifer Aniston tripping over Matt LeBlanc to take her seat, and moderator Andy Cohen asking the five-some, “Did you all sign contracts saying that you wouldn’t sleep with each other?” The camera cuts to Lisa Kudrow turning to David Schwimmer, joking, “David, say something!”

    Here’s the preview:

It should be pretty cute, even if it’s not an “official” reunion, and it will be great to see the other casts talk about their shows, too. The “All-Star Tribute to James Burrows” airs Sunday, February 21 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Big Questions With Tom Hanks, How Kunal Nayyar Lost His Virginity

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Here’s Stephen Colbert contemplating the mysteries of the universe alongside “Late Show” segment called “Big Questions with Even Bigger Stars.” It’s like a hilarious midnight picnic with Forrest Gump. The audience cheered for Tom for so long it kinda cut the segment short, but they still spent a lot of time asking deep questions and giving silly answers. For example, they tackled big Qs like “Why do bad things happen to good people?” and “What would you do with a time machine”? It’s great. A Hitler-killing baby is involved. Stephen Colbert + John Oliver = Where’s Jon Stewart? ‘Cause he would complete the trifecta. John got bleeped, saying he doesn’t give a toot about Donald Trump right now. But he can’t vote anyway, so… After his appearance, John Oliver left a funny video guest book message for Stephen Colbert, offering some tips on the show. “Late Show” guests Bill Withers and Ed Sheeran sat side-by-side and shared something in common: they both had stutters. The best part came after Ed listed all of his medical issues growing up: “The reason I became a musician is God looked down and said ‘You probably need some help getting laid.’” The audience cheered. Bill’s response: “That’s what you call going from ginger to a ginger snap.” Ken Jeong of “Dr. Ken” was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” talking about being a doctor who became an actor, and he did his Korean Johnny Carson impression: Seth Meyers got semi-serious over on “Late Night,” taking a closer look at Planned Parenthood and the recent Republican congressional attacks. Good work, man. This is what Seth does best, to be honest. He’s in his element when he’s mostly “The Daily Show.” Over on the “Late Late Show with James Corden,” Patricia Arquette, Matt Walsh, Jeremy Irvine discussed sex scene experiences. Which sock do you pick? Quite a dilemma. If you’re curious about how “The Big Bang Theory” star Kunal Nayyar lost his virginity, he wrote about it in his book and told the story on “Conan.” He was 19, it was anticlimactic and, the next morning, he called the girl the wrong name: On “The Tonight Show,” Bravo honcho Andy Cohen offered a guide to Twitter. “We are all just one tweet away from getting fired. Think before you tweet.” He also recently insulted Tori Spelling after she was burned, and then accidentally insulted her again when they e-mailed each other. Think before you e-mail too.
Last but not least, here’s the beautiful Julianna Margulies drowning in sexual innuendo (grease of the cock?!) when explaining a magazine shoot in the south of France. She’s all wet!

  • ‘Lip Sync Battle’ Is Back With Epic Lineup: Alison Brie, Justin Bieber, ‘Empire’ Cast

Three mouthed-but-not-vocalized cheers for the return of “Lip Sync Battle”! Spike TV’s epic celebrity showdown, hosted by LL Cool J, was an instant hit when it debuted with Dwayne Johnson vs. Jimmy Fallon back in April. It really picked up steam with the Anne Hathaway vs. Emily Blunt match, traumatized us — in a good way — with Stephen Merchant and later Julianne Hough, then dipped a bit before going on break. Season 1 is not over, but it’s been off the air since May 28. But now it’s back with a vengeance, starting next Thursday, July 9.

    Here’s the upcoming lineup:

    • Alison Brie vs. Will Arnett — July 9
    • Justin Bieber vs. Deion Sanders — July 16
    • Andy Cohen vs. Willie Geist — July 23
    • Victoria Justice vs. Gregg Sulkin — July 30
    • Abbi Jacobson vs. Ilana Glazer — August 6
    • Iggy Azalea vs. Nick Young — August 13
    • Terrence Howard vs. Taraji P. Henson — August 20

The shows were all pre-taped, so check out Spike’s preview, showing Will Arnett’s “Lego” routine; badass Alison Brie shooting down a photo of her opponent, Arnett (she’s totally winning her battle, you can tell just from the promo); Justin Bieber going full Ozzy, then reviving Deion Sanders; Terrence Howard playing dress up and the “Empire” stars getting back-up from Mary J. Blige herself:

Bring it on! This is serious must-see TV, so you’d better be there. Shows air at 10 p.m. Thursdays on Spike TV, then the best clips are usually posted to the show’s YouTube page.
