In theaters on limited release from November 26 before heading to Netflix on December 12 is ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,’ the third in director Rian Johnson’s compelling mystery movie series.

Back as usual is Daniel Craig (‘Knives Out’), once more playing smart detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a new ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), Josh Brolin (‘No Country for Old Men’), Glenn Close (‘Fatal Attraction’), Andrew Scott (‘All of Us Strangers’), Cailee Spaeny (‘Alien: Romulus’), Kerry Washington (‘Ray’) and Jeremy Renner (‘The Hurt Locker’).

Writer/director Rian Johnson breathed fresh, sharply-written life into the mystery genre with 2019’s ‘Knives Out.’ And if ‘Glass Onion’ in 2022 was a seemingly lesser (if still entertaining) follow-up, it’s relief to report that third outing ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ has much more in common –– especially in terms of quality character work and central crime –– with the first movie.

    Script and Direction

Johnson had always intended to make more movies featuring quirky, charismatic sleuth Benoit Blanc and a healthy deal from Netflix means we now have the third.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is a considerable step up from the second film, rivalling the original for how it weaves and then unravels its mystery. Part of the advantage is keeping Craig’s Blanc out of the story initially to give the other characters time to breathe. He still gets plenty of superb moments, but the ensemble as a whole has the space it needs to work.

Johnson has also made a beautiful-looking film, using the gloomy upstate New York setting (albeit filmed in the UK) to really enhance the storytelling.

    Cast and Performances

Craig is a natural as Blanc at this point, and the faith-wrangling storyline really gives him something to chew on. But praise also to Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Thomas Haden Church and Glenn Close in particular, who are all fantastic.

‘Wake Up Dead Man’ is certainly one of the best mystery movies to be released in the last couple of years, and happily stands alongside the first movie while nodding to its inspirations.

‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ receives 87 out of 100.

What’s the story of ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’?

When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it’s clear that all is not well in the pews.

    • Richard Linklater has cast his next film, ‘Blue Moon’.
    • Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley and Andrew Scott are all aboard.
    • Linklater will film in Dublin, Ireland this summer.

While some directors would be content to rest on their laurels after a successful recent release (the Glen Powell-starring Netflix smash ‘Hit Man’), that really isn’t Richard Linklater’s style.

He already has ‘Nouvelle Vague’, about the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Breathless’ in the editing stage and is also still shooting footage for his decades-in-the-making film version of musical ‘Merrily We Roll Along’).

Deadline reports that the busy filmmaker has secured backing for his next movie, ‘Blue Moon’, which follows the highs and lows of a real-life songwriting partnership and has locked in an interesting cast.

Written by Robert Kaplow, author of the novel ‘Me and Orson Welles’ (which inspired the Linklater film of the same name), ‘Blue Moon’ profiles the final days of Lorenz Hart, part of the hit songwriting team Rodgers & Hart –– who wrote ‘Blue Moon’ itself.

The movie is set primarily in New York’s Sardi’s Restaurant on March 31, 1943, the opening night of ‘Oklahoma!’, which marked Richard Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II as Hart’s replacement.

Who will appear in ‘Blue Moon’?

Ethan Hawke stars in 'The Black Phone,' directed by Scott Derrickson and opening in theaters on June 24th.

Linklater has rounded up quite the cast for this one, which will be anchored by his ninth collaboration with Ethan Hawke.

Margaret Qualley, who is in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kinds of Kindness’, Bobby Cannavale (‘Ezra’) and Andrew Scott (star of recent Netflix drama, ‘Ripley’) are also all on for the new movie, with Linklater planning a Dublin, Ireland shoot this summer.

Sony Pictures Classics will be financing the film after developing it for the past few months, with parent company Sony distributing it around the world. Linklater is aboard to produce alongside Mike Blizzard and longtime manager John Sloss.

This was the official statement from Sony Pictures Classics:

“Almost a year ago, Rick, Ethan, and John reached out to us with Robert Kaplow’s amazing script ‘Blue Moon’. Helping them over the following months to bring it together has been incredibly exciting and now, on the verge of production, with this fantastic cast and crew in place and Rick at the helm, we are thrilled to finally announce it and bring the film to audiences everywhere in the world.”

Here’s what Linklater had to say:

“Robert, Ethan, and I have been developing this story for over a decade and are excited and grateful that the time has come to bring this to life.”

There is no release date for ‘Blue Moon’ just yet.

The famous quote attributed to artist Andy Warhol runs, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Based on the evidence of the last week, it could be modified to “everyone will have the chance to appear in ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’”.

Because writer/director Rian Johnson has been on such a casting spree for the latest outing of canny detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) that it feels like half of Hollywood are involved in the new movie.

The latest to jump aboard? Josh Brolin, most recently seen in ‘Dune: Part Two’.

Kicking off with the first, eponymous movie, the ‘Knives Out’ series began as Craig’s southern-fried investigator Blanc probed the secrets of the uptight, wealthy Thrombey clan after the mysterious death of patriarch Harlan (Christopher Plummer).

It featured the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Katherine Langford, alongside a breakout turn for Ana de Armas, who played Harlan’s nurse and came to factor much more deeply into the story.

Travelling far from the chilly Massachusetts mansion of the original, ‘Glass Onion’ found Blanc headed overseas.

When tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?

As well as Craig and Norton, the cast was once more stuffed with talent, including Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

As is befitting the new mystery, Johnson has yet to release any real details about the movie, so it’s a waiting game to see where Blanc ends up this time, and what he has to dig into.

It has only so far been described as his “most dangerous mystery yet.”

Netflix has yet to confirm a release date for the movie but given that Johnson is about to start he cameras rolling, we’d expect it to arrive in 2025. • Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny are the latest addition to the ‘Knives Out’ movies.
    • Daniel Craig stars.
    • Rian Johnson is gearing up to direct the new film.

Having found success with his first ‘Knives Out’ movie back in 2019 ($300 million at the box office from a relatively thrifty $40 million budget), writer/director Rian Johnson signed a hefty $450 million deal with Netflix to produce two more, with producer Ram Bergman and star Daniel Craig along for the ride.

That deal has already borne fruit with the release of 2022’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ and we learned late last week that the third movie in the series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ is already gearing up for production.

Beyond Craig, who returns as drawling detective Benoit Blanc, we now know the first two cast members who will be part of the new mystery, as ‘ChallengersJosh O’Connor and ‘Priscilla’/‘Civil War’s Cailee Spaeny are confirmed as joining the cast.

And they’re not the only ones. Shortly after the duo’s casting was reported, news broke that Andrew Scott –– who won praise for his work in ‘All of Us Strangers’ on the big screen and Netflix’s recent TV adaptation ‘Ripley’, was reported by Variety as joining the cast.

  • Andrew Scott Stars in the ‘Ripley’ Series Teaser

    Preview:

    • The first ‘Ripley’ teaser is online.
    • Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn star.
    • The new series lands on Netflix in April.

Given the proliferation of spin-offs and prequels, you might be forgiven, upon seeing the title ‘Ripley’, that the new Netflix series focuses on the earlier days (or somehow, through science fiction trickery, continues the story) of Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from the ‘Alien’ movies.

But from a first look at the teaser for the show, it all becomes clear: instead, what we have is the latest adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’.

This one comes from Steven Zaillian, who has quite the resume –– a regular collaborator of Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, he’s also an accomplished filmmaker in his own right, having directed the likes of ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ and re-written many scripts in his time.

The story has, of course, already been brought famously to screens by Anthony Minghella in the 1999 film named for the novel, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, but this new version appears to take inspiration from other books as well the main ‘Ripley’ tome.

    What’s the story of ‘Ripley’?

Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in 'Ripley.'

Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) is a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. When he’s hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son (Johnny Flynn’s Dickie Greenleaf) to return home, Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Zaillian writes and directs all eight episodes, and from the looks of the first teaser, has shot the whole thing in crisp monochrome to give it some standout style.

The cast for the show also includes Dakota Fanning, Elliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy and John Malkovich.

Scott, who is garnering plenty of attention thanks to superb work in the likes of ‘All of Us Strangers’, looks set to receive more acclaim for this. And the teaser spotlights an excellent ensemble around him.

All eight episodes of ‘Ripley’ are scheduled to arrive on Netflix on April 4th. If you ask us, given his less-than-truthful nature, April 1st might have made sense, but that doesn’t fit the streamer’s release policy.
