    • Taylor Swift’s ‘The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ topped the box office.
    • The album release party movie earned $33 million.
    • MMA biopic ‘The Smashing Machine’ was third.

Taylor Swift has proved once again that she has the power. Even though her latest cinematic offering, ‘The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ isn’t a concert film like ‘The Eras Tour’ a couple of years ago, fans flocked to see it on release this weekend.

It’s even more impressive when you consider that Swift dropped word of it around two weeks ago via her (albeit mighty) social channels and there has been little other promotion beyond backers AMC Theaters, who scored another exclusive deal with the singer.

‘Showgirl,’ an 89-minute listening party that offers fans a look at a new music video and behind-the-scenes footage for her 12th studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ took in an impressive $33 million this weekend on a three-day limited run. And with Swift bypassing studios, she and AMC enjoy a bigger cut of any profits.

Internationally, the new Swift release earned $13 million, for a $46 million global haul so far. As mentioned, it won’t be sticking around theaters (we’re sure studios and filmmakers will breathe a sigh of relief) and will likely now head to home entertainment channels.

It’s all in support of her latest album, which itself has been breaking records itself despite some mixed reviews.

Here’s AMC’s CEO Adam Aron in a statement about the latest Swift cinema release:

“On behalf of AMC Theatres and the entire theatrical exhibition industry, I extend our sincerest appreciation to the iconic Taylor Swift for bringing her brilliance and magic to movie theatres this weekend. Her vision to add a cinematic element to her incredible album debut was nothing less than a triumph.”

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

There was bad news for Dwayne Johnson, whose much-hyped A24 title, ‘The Smashing Machine,’ failed to make much of an impact. Directed by Benny Safdie and co-starring Emily Blunt, it follows a chunk of the life of 1990s MMA fighter Mark Kerr.

The movie, which cost $50 million to produce (and more to market), earned a disappointing third place launch. A24 will likely still be pinning its hopes on this one being an awards contender, and it remains to be seen whether the lackluster financial performance hurts those chances.

Second place went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another,’ the anarchic comedic action epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. With $41 million earned to date in the US, it is now PTA’s most successful movie, but with a $130 million-plus price tag, faces a steep climb to breaking even.

Fourth was ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’, the movie adaptation of the kids’ show sinking further. And fifth was horror sequel ‘The Conjuring: The Last Rites’.

  • Beyoncé to Release ‘Renaissance’ Concert Film

If there’s one person who could claim as much cultural impact via their music and their life as Taylor Swift at the moment, it’s Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

So, somewhat naturally after having seen the success that Swift is enjoying with her ‘Eras Tour’ concert film even before it hits theaters, Beyoncé is readying ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’, a concert film based on her ‘Renaissance’ tour, and is taking on the same deal with AMC that Swift received.

To give her credit, however, this is something that Beyoncé, who has a history of impressive concert films, has been cooking up for a while –– it’s the distribution plan that’s new.

    What is the Renaissance Tour?

The Renaissance World Tour is the ninth concert tour by Beyoncé. Her highest grossing tour to date, it was announced on February 1, 2023, in support of her seventh studio album, ‘Renaissance’.

The all-stadium concert run began on May 10, 2023, in Stockholm, Sweden, and has just concluded this weekend in Kansas City, Missouri.

The concert lasts between two and a half and three hours and is split into six or seven acts, with Beyoncé performing the tracks of ‘Renaissance’ in order, interspersed with songs from across her discography (much like Taylor’s tour). The stage consists of a giant screen with a large “portal” in its center, and features sculptures, robotic arms and ultraviolet technology.

The tour broke ticket sales records worldwide and became the highest grossing tour ever by a female artist, achieving the two highest monthly tour-grosses in history.

Primarily filmed at Beyoncé’s Houston hometown, ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ will also feature highlights of the tour and, in true Beyoncé, snippets of more personal footage, including time with her family.

“When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” Beyoncé says in the trailer over a montage of images from the road. “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free, and no one is judged.”

As with the Eras Tour, ‘Renaissance’ was offered up on auction to studios and streamers but has ended up striking a deal with cinema chain AMC.

It’s something of a win-win for Beyoncé and the company, since the singer self-financed the film and will receive 50% of the worldwide profits when the movie is released.

When can I see ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’?

‘Renaissance’ is currently lining up a December 1st release in theaters. Right now, its main competition is Jeff Nichols’ ‘The Bikeriders’ and the first film in years from John Woo, ‘Silent Night’. We’d be shocked if they didn’t move off the spot the same way ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ blinked when faced with the power of Swift.

The experience will air Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, for a minimum of four weeks, with multiple showtimes programmed throughout the day. Tickets in the US for all standard showtimes will start at $22 plus tax; ‘Renaissance’ will also be available in IMAX at AMC and Dolby Cinema at AMC, and other branded premium large format screens.

You can buy tickets from today at AMC’s site and globally from its sister companies.

Some Theaters Will Stay Open for 4 Days Straight for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Premiere

    Marvel Studios

Marvel fans can’t wait to see “Avengers: Endgame” when it opens this week, and the country’s largest theater chain is leaning into that demand by giving the people what they want: The chance to watch the movie 24/7.

AMC Theatres announced that dozens of its locations across the nation will accommodate ravenous filmgoers this weekend, with several staying open for four consecutive days. The chain credited the unprecedented demand from MCU loyalists — who have already set numerous ticket presale records both domestically and abroad — for making the decision a no-brainer.

“AMC guests have already purchased more tickets to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ than we’ve ever sold in advance of a film’s release – and our first shows aren’t until Thursday evening,” said Elizabeth Frank, EVP of worldwide programming for AMC, in a statement. “With a desire to satisfy as many Marvel fans as possible on Thursday and through the weekend, AMC’s programming team is reviewing ticket sales theatre by theatre and adding showtimes later and later. In fact, there are multiple AMC locations that will be operating around the clock from Thursday night through Sunday.”

Here’s the breakdown of how many theaters will be catering to diehards:

    • 29 AMC theaters will be open around the clock Thursday through Friday
    • 18 AMC theaters will be open around the clock Thursday through Saturday, or Friday through Sunday
    • 17 AMC theaters will be open around the clock Thursday night through Sunday — more than 72 hours straight

To check if your local theater is among those participating in the 24/7 event, visit AMC’s official website.

“Avengers: Endgame” opens in the U.S. this Friday, April 26.
