    • A TV series based on 1991’s ‘Point Break’ is in development.
    • AMC Network is backing the project.
    • David Kalstein will run the show.

1991 action thriller ‘Point Break’ has been through the remake wringer once before (see more on that lower down the page), but according to Deadline, cable channel AMC has decided to try again, this time developing the concept as a TV series.

David Kalstein, who recently worked on Prime Video series ‘Butterfly’ (which starred Daniel Dae Kim as an intelligence agent working in Korea), will be overseeing the eventual show.

It’s hardly the first time AMC has looked to convert a 1990s movie into a series –– it has seen success with Anne Rice adaptation ‘Interview with the Vampire,’ which has spawned a small-screen franchise based on the author’s work.

What’s the story of ‘Point Break’?

The original movie, which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents, a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks.

The Ex-Presidents, who wear masks of Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Lyndon B. Johnson, are led by Patrick Swayze’s Bodhi, and Utah gets swept up in their daredevil lifestyle before a massive action chase and a reunion amid lethal waves.

A remake emerged in 2015 from director Ericson Core that starred Edgar Ramirez, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone. It did not enjoy the same level of critical or commercial success.

A bigger question is how the concept can be stretched in order to fit the TV format; though Deadline’s story does at least offer some details: the series is set 35 years after the events of the original film and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.

And converting movies to TV series has been a hit and miss prospect of late, with the likes of ‘Lethal Weapon’ failing to spark.

When will the new ‘Point Break’ TV series be on screens?

It’s clearly early days for this one, so AMC Networks has yet to announce when the show might be hitting our screens. We’re not sure we expect it much before 2027, though.

  • ‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 in the Works

Way back in 2016, long before he brought ‘Loki’ to the small screen, Tom Hiddleston was the star of limited spy series ‘The Night Manager’.

Shown on the BBC in the UK and AMC in the States, ‘The Night Manager’ saw Hiddleston as soldier-turned-hotel night boss Jonathan Pine who was recruited for a specific mission.

David Farr, who had previously worked on spy series ‘MI-5’ adapted John le Carré’s story for the screen, while Susanne Bier directed the series.

Now, Prime Video and the BBC are working together to develop a second season, also written by Farr. Deadline reports that there is no official greenlight yet, but things are moving swiftly –– to the point where a third season is also in the mix, presumably to secure Hiddleston’s services and to avoid his busy schedule.

What was the story of ‘The Night Manager’?

The limited series focused on British former soldier Jonathan Pine, who, after leaving the military, had found work as the night manager of a swanky hotel in Cairo.

A smooth, handsome type Pine becomes involved with a woman (Elizabeth Debicki’s Jed Marshall), who happens to already be the lover of an international arms smuggler called Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).

Through her relationship with him, Jed has discovered information about Roper’s dodgy dealings. But when Jed ends up murdered, Pine, fearing for his life, flees, and starts working at a Swiss hotel. Four years later, Roper shows up at the venue, and Pine’s thirst for revenge over Jed’s death rises.

That, in turn, leads Pine to be recruited by British intelligence (with Olivia Colman’s Angela Burr among his handlers) so he can help take Roper down. But what follows is a dangerous game of deceit and intrigue.

Tom Hollander and David Harewood were also in the cast of the series, which won two Emmys and several Golden Globes. It was successful enough to spawn a Hindi adaptation that starred Aditya Roy Kapur as Pine and Anil Kapoor as Roper and aired this year in India.

Ink Factory, the company behind the series, went on to also adapt le Carré story ‘The Little Drummer Girl’ into another limited series that starred Florence Pugh, Michael Shannon and Alexander Skarsgård, and was directed by Park Chan-wook.

What can we expect from Season 2 of ‘The Night Manager’?

The new series, also written by Farr, is set in the present day. Following Roper being taken away by the Syrians at the end of Season 1, Hiddleston’s Pine is informed he is dead two years later, and he has to face up to a new, even more deadly challenge.

Season 2 should shoot in London and South Africa later this year, but we have yet to learn who else might be in the cast around Hiddleston.

Tom Hiddleston fans, meanwhile, will be able to see him back on TV this summer with ‘Loki’ Season 2.

  • New ‘The Walking Dead’ Spin-off Series Announced

Just because ‘The Walking Dead’ is set to stumble into TV history this year, that doesn’t mean that network home AMC is ready to give up on the post-apocalyptic world just yet. Far from it, in fact, with a variety of follow-ups at different stages of development and a new one – starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee called ‘Isle of the Dead’ on the way.

A six-episode limited series, ‘Isle of the Dead’ will follow Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.

Created by and to be run by ‘Dead’ scripting veteran Eli Jorné, the show will bring together two characters few thought would find common ground, especially since Negan was introduced partly by killing Maggie’s husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). And yet, in the years since, they’ve come to an understanding, even teaming up in this 11th and final season.

Though there had been talk of a solo spin-off for Cohan’s popular character a few years ago, she went through some tough contract negotiations in recent times, leading to her making sporadic appearances in season 9 and leaving the show before returning for the Season 10 finale onwards.

“This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around ‘The Walking Dead’,” says Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love, hate or hate and then love in Maggie and Negan, brilliantly inhabited by Lauren and Jeffrey. It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”

Says ‘Walking Dead’ chief content officer Scott Gimple: “Eli has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the ‘TWD’ Universe. Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world — and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all new, all different ‘TWD’ epic for the ages.”

This latest spin-off follows the likes of prequel ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ and youth focused ‘The Walking Dead: The World Beyond’ and is part of a sprawling grand plan to keep the stories going.

Anthology series ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ is scheduled to launch this year, while a show focused on Carol and Daryl, played by Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus, is expected in 2023. ‘Isle of the Dead’ should also be on screens at some point next year and there is still the lingering promise of a movie featuring Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.

  • ‘Killing Eve’ Season 2 Premiere Sets Series-High Ratings

‘Killing Eve’ Season 2 Premiere Sets Series-High Ratings

    BBC America

“Killing Eve” is killing it in the ratings.

The drama reached an all-time record-high in the ratings for Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, with 1.2 million viewers.

That’s half a million viewers and a 67% rise from its previous high in the Season 1 finale. The premiere episode also doubled its average in the adults 18-49 demo, to a total of 327,000.

There are some big differences between the first and second seasons. Now, the show is being simulcast on both BBC America (its original home) and sister network AMC.

The show also got a ton of notice over the fall and winter, thanks to Sandra Oh hosting the Golden Globes and winning a Globe and a SAG Award for her performance.

The meteoric rise in ratings led AMC Networks to give the show an early renewal for Season 3.

It will be shepherded by another new showrunner, British writer Suzanne Heathcote (“Fear the Walking Dead”). She follows Season 2 executive producer Emerald Fennell, and Season 1’s EP and series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
