  • Ron Howard and Colin Farrell Talk ‘Thirteen Lives’

    5ueibl0y

Now playing in select theaters and premiering on August 5th on Prime Video is the new film ‘Thirteen Lives,’ which was directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard and is based on a true story.

The film stars Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen, Joel Edgerton, and Tom Bateman as a group of elite divers that help save a junior football team and their coach after they are trapped in a Northern Thailand cave for 18 days.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Ron Howard and actor Colin Farrell about their work on ‘Thirteen Lives,’ the real-life story that inspired it, and shooting the underwater sequences.

Moviefone: To begin with, Ron what was it about this true story that inspired you to make this movie?

Ron Howard: It’s such a story for this moment because it’s about putting divisions aside, putting politics aside, and international people across borders getting something done. That requires a lot. That requires a spirit of volunteerism. It also requires that the country that is where the crisis is occurring has to also allow for this.

So, I thought on so many levels the story was inspiring, and informative, and set a great example. Also, it’s just a great movie story. It’s suspenseful, it’s emotional, and it’s all the things that I love to see in a film.

MF: Colin, the character you play, John Volanthen, was uniquely qualified as a diver for this particular rescue. Can you talk about his experience as a diver and the challenges of convincing the government officials to let him help?

Colin Farrell: The experience of the divers? I mean, it’s such a cottage industry, cave diving. There’re not many cave divers in the world. I think it’s becoming a little bit more popular through the years, but maybe that means the addition of an extra 20 divers globally every year. It’s something that they love to do.

I play John Volanthen and he mixes it up. He’s an incredibly measured man, incredibly bright, but he also has an extreme side to him. He runs ultra-marathons, and he’s been doing cave diving for 30 years. They make their own equipment as well, Rick and John, they’re just a one stop shop. They make their own equipment and they modify it themselves.

All this stuff, it didn’t look like it was high end technologically advanced gear that they brought to Thailand. It was all homemade stuff. They were just the only ones that were really equipped with a certain set of skills to do this particular thing.

So, they, without hesitation, went over and they didn’t know. They didn’t know when they arrived. Nobody knew if the boys were still alive, even by that point. I do know that there was a stage where they believed that they were going to be finding dead bodies as opposed to alive children.

This story is very much about the coming together and the communal experience of shared care, focused in toward one direction of the rescue that was needed to take place. But of course, there were arguments and of course there were misunderstandings. Of course, understandably certain factions of the Thai government were suspicious about outsiders, as they should be. But at the end of the day, they worked it out on site.

I wasn’t there, but I know they worked it out and I know they all came together. It’s been very documented. Some of the tensions have also been documented. It’s already a two-and-a-half-hour film, so we didn’t have time. Ron didn’t want to explore that. It wasn’t the point of the story that we were telling. You have to make judicial cuts, of course.

But at the end of the day, everyone did come together, and they came together for one common purpose. That was the most beautiful aspect of being part of this film, in such a divided world. This was the opposite. It was people that looked beyond national division, looked beyond even cultural separation and said, “Okay, let’s do what’s right by these kids. The most important thing is to get them out alive.”

MF: Finally, Ron can you talk as a director about the challenges of shooting the underwater sequences and training the actors to be able to accomplish those scenes?

RH: Well, I was a little cavalier about it because I’ve done a lot of filming underwater, going back to ‘Splash’ and ‘Cocoon.’ Over the years, I’ve done a lot of filming underwater in the heart of the sea. It’s always been exciting and very productive.

But I underestimated the degree of difficulty when you create the caves. We built all of those caves and recreated the most dangerous spots along the cave system. But I underestimated how difficult it was going to be and how much the safety issues were going to factor into making sure we even could shoot on a tank with these caves. It was just so constricted and risky.

You’re still talking about trapping people in a space like that. The training was vital. Two of the actual cave rescuers were technical advisors on the movie and came not only to make sure we were getting it right, but they got in the water with our actors, our stunt people, and our stunt coordinators and made sure that we got it right. That the technique was right.

They did such a great job that the actors came to me and said, “We now believe we can do this safely. Please, let’s not use any stunt people. We want to do it ourselves. It’s literally part of the characters that we now have to create.” That’s the way it worked out. It was heroic.

  • Billy Porter and Cast on Prime Video’s ‘Anything’s Possible’

    KLIvtskl

Premiering on Prime Video July 22nd is the directorial debut from actor Billy Porter (‘Cinderella’) entitled ‘Anything’s Possible.’

The movie follows Kelsa (Eva Reign), a confident high school girl who is trans, as she navigates through senior year and her first love with a boy named Khal (Abubakr Ali).

In addition to Reign and Ali, the film also features Renee Elise Goldsberry (‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’) as Kelsa’s mother.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Billy Porter, Eva Reign and Abubakr Ali about ‘Anything’s Possible,’ shooting in Porter’s hometown of Pittsburgh, how Reign could relate to Kelsa’s journey, and Khal’s relationship with his parents.

You can read the full interview below or watch the interviews by clicking on the video player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, Billy when you first read the screenplay, what was the moment that made you say, “I have to direct this movie?”

Billy Porter: Well, from page one, really, but it was around page 25 or 30, where the place of Pittsburgh was finally mentioned. Pittsburgh is my hometown. That was when I knew that it was just meant to be.

MF: Eva, could you relate to Kelsa’s story, and how much of Eva is in Kelsa and vice versa?

Eva Reign: Oh, that’s a really good question. I could relate to Kelsa a lot. We’re both two young, Black trans girls raised by amazing single moms who both happened to work in the medical field, which I thought was really surreal. My mom literally has been working in a hospital since I was born.

So, just even that little nuance was so interesting to read about. We’re both from middle America, both love fashion, both love clothes. She’s definitely more of a science nerd than I am. That was not my strong suit growing up.

But, I’d say there’s a decent amount of Kelsa in me and also a decent amount of me in her. I think a lot of the differences definitely reside in, I think, just how we dive into things. Kelsa is so bright-eyed and so willing to take a risk, and that’s something that I learned from playing her.

That it’s fine to take a risk, to really lean into the joy and to not overthink everything. I’m a major Gemini, so I overthink everything constantly. Kelsa, luckily, doesn’t have that issue. So, it was nice to dive in and just have fun.

MF: Finally, Abubakr can you talk about Cal’s relationship with his family and how his journey challenges their expectations for his future?

Abubakr Ali: That’s a very good question, actually. I think it’s nice to see a character who is very open to his family and able to talk to his family, which I think, for me, at times was hard.

At least growing up Muslim in this country, it’s hard to be completely honest. I find myself always trying to protect my parents a little bit from my experience out in the world. To see this character be able to have those conversations with his parents was a joy to live through and to portray.

  • New Trailer for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’

    c0VwPlzn

With the series due in September, we’re getting a new look at ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ via the latest trailer.

This new adaptation of Tolkien’s sprawling fantasy novels comes courtesy of J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who have writing credits on movies including ‘Star Trek Beyond’. ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s JA Bayona is involved as an executive producer and director along with fellow director Charlotte Brändström.

‘The Rings of Power’, according to the showrunners, unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

The “Second Age” refers to a long period in the history of Middle Earth that ends with the defeat of Sauron and precedes Tolkien’s book and Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy, which take place during the Third Age. The titular Rings of Power were forged in this era and 19 of them were given to elves, dwarves, and humans to incentivize them to support Sauron’s reign.

The One Ring, which figures so heavily into the plot of the original trilogy is the most powerful of the 20 (it’s what Frodo and the gang travelled all that way to destroy). The official description mentions an evil even greater than Sauron, which probably points Morgoth, a god-like creature who tried to rule Middle-earth – and that had Sauron serving as his general.

This latest footage offers the first glimpse at characters including Isildur (Maxim Baldry), Elendil (Lloyd Owen), Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle), and Queen Regent Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson).

Also featured are key cast members Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), High King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), the Harfoots Marigold Brandyfoot (Sara Zwangobani), Elanor ‘Nori’ Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh), Poppy Proudfellow (Megan Richards) and Sadoc Burrows (Sir Lenny Henry), The Stranger (Daniel Weyman), the Dwarves King Durin III (Peter Mullan) and Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova).

The teaser trailer highlights some of the realms viewers will visit over the course of the eight-part series, including the Elven realms of Lindon and Eregion, the Dwarven realm Khazad-dûm, the Southlands, the Northernmost Wastes, the Sundering Seas, and the island kingdom of Númenór.

There’s plenty of talk about the darkness potentially rising again, and the danger that it promises, though some of the characters seem convinced that it’s all in the past and that everyone should be looking towards the future. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a TV series if the refuseniks were right, and nothing bad was on the way.

Plus, a comet soaring across the sky and crashing to the ground is surely a portent of bad things on the horizon.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ will launch on Prime Video on September 2nd, with new episodes debuting weekly.

  • New Trailer for Sci-Fi Drama ‘Night Sky’

    J. K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek
(L to R) J. K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek in Prime Video’s ‘Night Sky.’

Mystery series featuring unusual chambers filled with secrets all must try and avoid falling into some of the ‘Lost’ traps (setting up a lot, but not providing enough answers), so new Prime Video series ‘Night Sky’ will be hoping to steer clear of the danger zones.

‘Night Sky’ follows Irene (Sissy Spacek) and Franklin York (J.K. Simmons), a couple who, years ago, discovered a chamber buried in their backyard which inexplicably leads to a strange, deserted planet. The older couple have been visiting the place ever since, trying to figure out what it all means. Why are they able to access it?

They’ve carefully guarded their secret ever since, but when an enigmatic young man enters their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence is quickly upended…and the mystifying chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be much more than they could ever have imagined.

It’s refreshing to see a genre series with the focus on older characters, and the show looks to explore life, the universe and everything through their lens, while also adding in some thriller elements as their secret is threatened.

Chai Hansen, Kiah McKirnan, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, and Adam Bartley are all also in the cast for this one.

The series comes from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television. It was created by Holden Miller, whose previous resume doesn’t scream “genre veteran”: he has mostly written for the late-night likes of Dennis Miller and Larry Wilmore. He’ll serve as an executive producer here, while Daniel C. Connolly, who has a little more experience on that front (he’s worked on series including ‘Into the Badlands’, ‘The Son’, and ‘Colony’), is showrunner.

On the directing front, the list is an eclectic mix of those who’ve worked in cinematic drama and comedy, including ‘American Splendor’s Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, ‘The Secret in Their Eyes’ Juan José Campanella, and Jessica Lowrey, who recently worked on episodes of ‘Perry Mason’ and ‘Halo’.

“I love all sci-fi, but it can be very self-serious and very ponderous sometimes,” showrunner/executive producer Connolly told Town & Country. “To present to an audience something that’s a little bit more approachable and lived in was our guiding star as we went about creating the show.”

“There’s something fitting in this show about sort of experiencing something incredibly momentous, but from a place that feels like it’s your own bedroom,” Miller adds. “It feels a little bit like what we’ve all been going through for the past couple years — what the uncanny mixing of those two things feels like. At the same time, while ‘Night Sky’ is incredibly emotionally serious, and it has a warmth and a humor and an escapist quality — reminding us of the possibility of adventure in life, and the profundities that we’re constantly grappling with.”

‘Night Sky’ is taking the binge-watch route for its release, with Prime Video putting all eight episodes of Season 1 out on May 20th.

  • Eddie Murphy Starring in George Clinton Biopic

Eddie Murphy scored a major success – and, in our opinion, was robbed of a worthy Oscar nomination – for playing a real-life person in Netflix’s ‘Dolemite is My Name’. He’s looking to re-enter the biopic world with a new movie, one about musical legend George Clinton.

Clinton is widely considered to be the Godfather of Funk, rivaling James Brown and Sly Stone as the foremost innovators in that musical genre. The film will tell the story of the iconic musician’s humble beginnings in North Carolina in the 1940s to the formation of groundbreaking bands and ultimately to becoming a major influence on artists of the hip-hop generation including Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast and Wu-Tang Clan, among many others.

In case the name is unfamiliar, his band Parliament-Funkadelic (abbreviated as P-Funk) is an American funk music collective of rotating musicians headed by Clinton, primarily consisting of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic, both active since the 1960s. Their distinctive funk style drew on psychedelic culture, outlandish fashion, science-fiction, and surreal humor; and, along with their influential status, helped pioneer Afrofuturism.

Murphy, according to Deadline, is passionate about this idea, so expect it to move quickly.

    Freestyle Releasing
    Eddie Murphy in ‘Mr. Church.’

Still, it’s very early days for this one; Murphy is aboard to both star and produce alongside with John Davis and Catherine Davis, who will work through their Davis Entertainment banner. The trio is busy making a deal with Clinton, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, for his life and musical rights.

Once that happens, they’ll look for writers who can bring his fascinating story to life – and we figure their best bet might be biopic experts Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who worked so well with Murphy on ‘Dolemite’ -but you never know who might get the gig.

When those pesky details are in place, the team can start to shop the project around various studios and streamers, and there’s a chance that it could land at Amazon, where Murphy has a deal following the success of ‘Coming 2 America.’ Yet ‘Dolemite’ – which also had the Davis Entertainment duo as producers, was made for Netflix, so don’t count out their big rivals.

As an actor, Murphy has Kenya Barris comedy ‘You People’ – in which he stars opposite Jonah Hill – making its way through post-production at Netflix and keeps talking up the idea of returning to the role of Axel Foley for a fourth ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ movie.

Music biopics are a popular subject right now, with Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ due in theaters on June 24, ‘Once’ director John Carney just attached to the long-gestating Bee Gees film and Naomi Ackie playing Whitney Houston in ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, which is set for release on December 21st.

  • Amazon Greenlights Bond Reality Competition

Daniel Craig as James Bond in 2012's 'Skyfall.'
Daniel Craig as James Bond in 2012’s ‘Skyfall.’

Mere weeks after Amazon officially closed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, the company has announced its first Bond-related project: a reality TV competition series.

Prime Video has flashed the greenlight for ‘007’s Road to a Million’, a series that will see competitors shaken and stirred as they’re dispatched on a challenging race and series of trivia questions in a quest for a cash prize. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the shepherds of the Bond franchise, are involved, and it’ll kick off shooting later this year.

Yet while the announcement has led to a ripple of panic online that this is the future of the Bond movie series and a clear indication that Amazon’s purchase of MGM means a wave of junk Bond spin-off opportunities, this show has been in the works for years, long before the MGM deal closed, and something that has the backing of Broccoli and Wilson.

“I first had this idea over three years ago. Dan Grabiner and the U.K. Originals team took it to a whole other level, says 72 Film boss David Glover, whose company will be producing the show for Amazon, MGM, and EON, tells Variety. “To be working with Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and the Bond franchise is a privilege and a dream come true.”

    Sean Connery as James Bond
Sean Connery as James Bond in 1964’s ‘Goldfinger’

Sounding a lot like a Bond-branded version of CBS series ‘The Amazing Race’, the show will see contestants competing in a global adventure to win a £1 million ($1.3 million) cash prize. Filmed in many of the historic locations featured throughout the seminal Bond films, this will be a test of intelligence and endurance. In addition to passing physical obstacles, the contestants — who will compete in two-person teams — must correctly answer questions hidden in different locations around the world to advance to the next challenge.

It seems unlikely to dip too far into Bond’s history – the famously sexist spy has been modernized in recent years, so while it’ll see competitors heading to locations, we doubt challenges will include unzipping a dress with a magnetic watch or shooting as many nameless henchmen as possible. And though they could end up mixing martinis, they probably won’t have to match the spy’s alcohol consumption levels.

The show comes at a point of transition for big-screen Bond: Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007 is over following ‘No Time to Die’, which has earned more than $774 million at the worldwide box office. Broccoli and Wilson are now tasked with finding a fresh face to take on the role and keep the film series evolving to meet the demands of a changing cultural and cinematic world.

This competition won’t end up with the winner claiming the role of Bond, but if you want to apply for the show – UK residents and those who can prove a direct connection to the country only, we’re afraid – you can head to this link.

And if you get in? Do pay attention, 007.

  • Amazon Buys MGM

    Amazon MGM
Amazon has completed a deal to merge with movie/TV studio MGM.

In one of the biggest movements in the corporate world since Disney began acquiring other companies, Amazon has completed a deal to merge with movie/TV studio MGM.

The $8.5 billion deal – just think, you too could have bought MGM if you had that down the back of the sofa – means that Amazon now has access to more than 4,000 film titles and 17,000 TV episodes, which will be a helpful boost for its Prime Video streaming service.

Though while Amazon is now in charge of future MGM movie releases, it is reportedly “excited” by the company’s upcoming slate (which includes George Clooney’s ‘The Boys in the Boat’, Zach Braff’s Florence Pugh/Morgan Freeman drama ‘A Good Person’ and sci-fi movie ‘Landscape with Invisible Hand’ and doesn’t foresee any changes to that schedule.

This new wrinkle also doesn’t mean that all MGM films will automatically become exclusive to Prime Video, and the studio will continue to support future theatrical releases via Amazon Studios. It also means that the MGM brand will stay in the movie and TV world, albeit as an Amazon company.

Perhaps the biggest part of the acquisition is that Amazon now owns the rights to the storied James Bond franchise, though control over what is made under that title is still held – for now – by longtime Bond shepherds Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who run Eon productions. They have final say on casting, production, marketing and more to do with the British spy, who has been played by several actors – most recently Daniel Craig – in his long run.

    Daniel Craig with gun
Daniel Craig as James Bond in ‘Skyfall.’

“For better or worse, we are the custodians of this character,” Broccoli, who oversees the franchise with her half-brother Michael G. Wilson. “We take that responsibility seriously.”

The Eon team has always resisted spinning off the character into TV shows and other media, though you just know Amazon would love to have a Bond universe the way that Disney has put a load of extra Star Wars and Marvel content into the world.

“MGM has been responsible for the creation of some of the most well-known and critically acclaimed films and television series of the past century,” says Amazon’s Mike Hopkins. “We look forward to continuing that tradition as we head into this next chapter, coming together with the great team at Prime Video and Amazon Studios to provide audiences with the very best in entertainment for years to come.”

The Amazon/MGM deal had been big enough that the Federal Trade Commission had been rumored to sue and block it, but obviously it decided to let it go through.

It’s just the latest mega-deal for big entertainment companies – Warner Bros. parent WarnerMedia will join forces with Discovery once that merger is signed and sealed, likely next month. Following that, we firmly expect Disney to buy everyone else.

  • Regina Hall, Zoe Renee, and Mariama Diallo Talk ‘Master’

    Regina Hall in Master

Premiering on Prime Video beginning March 18th is the new thriller ‘Master,’ which marks the feature film directorial debut for writer/director Mariama Diallo.

The movie stars Regina Hall (‘Girls Trip’) as Gail Bishop, a professor at a prominent New England university that is rumored to be haunted. As Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee) begins her freshman year, she starts to experience super natural encounters and fears for her life. Gail tries to help Jasmine, but also must navigate through an educational institution that is hiding secrets of its own.

Moviefone recently had the opportunity to speak with writer and director Mariama Diallo, and actresses Regina Hall and Zoe Renee about their work on ‘Master.’

    wRPNITd2

You can read the full transcript below or watch a video of the interview in the player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, Mariama, can you talk about developing the idea for the screenplay, and the themes that you wanted to explore with this project?

Mariama Diallo: So, ‘Master’ came to me in pieces, but the title was actually the first thing that came to me, and I was really interested in the word “master.” It felt very full and very powerful, and I loved all of the additional meanings. I’m a big fan of ‘The Master,’ but if you ask me, we have the better title because it’s so multifaceted. You can master as an action. There’s obviously, in America, there’s the historical meaning of a master as tied to slavery. Then, there’s the academic meaning. There’s the meaning as it applies to Gail.

So, I just found it to be really spiky and sharp, and I was really interested in it. Then from there, I started to think of the character of Gail and what it would mean for a Black woman to be placed in that kind of situation, and how would she’d respond or try to deal with it. Then, Jasmine came next, thinking about this almost fun house, mirror reflection of Gail’s younger self and the generational differences between them, and how Jasmine responds to being in a space like Ancaster.

So, it just kept on growing outwards and pulling in more and more characters and more of the world. Then, the themes really came along with it because I think that they’re part and parcel of my own experience, perspective and observations, so they had to be part of the film. Whether it’s the hypocrisy that we see amongst some of the others in the institution, or the death by a thousand cuts that Jasmine and also Gail endure from these small kinds of micro-aggressions from their peers.

Those are all things that definitely factor largely into my own life and my own thoughts and perspectives. So, what I really loved about the process of making this film is how I pulled in a lot from a lot of different facets of my life.

MF: Regina, can you talk about your character and your approach to playing her?

Regina Hall: I thought Gail was really incredibly interesting, having to take on the position of the master for the first time, what that would mean for her. But then, what does it really mean? Really examining, are you being used for something, you know what I mean? Are you being used, or are you useful? I mean, whatever terms those are. I think just being able to talk about the character with Mariama, the beauty of rehearsal, reading it over and over and just discovering what is the meaning behind that, behind the line.

I think, working opposite Zoe and such incredible young talent, there was so much room for discovery to see a woman experiencing all that she had, but then watching this new class. There’s such hope, and then such sadness and such loss of many things. There’s loss of a dream, loss of life, and then, the discovery of what you have lost. But it’s also really bright in the beginning. It’s amazing to get what you’ve hoped for, and then everything that comes with that.

MF: Finally, Zoe, what has this  experience been like for you and what was it like making this movie with Mariama and Regina?

Zoe Renee: It was great. I mean, really from start to finish, we have such a beautiful team; the casting process to the shooting process, to the prep process to now. I’m doing a lot of things for the first time, and I have to say that I’m really enjoying myself and I have been. It’s been an amazing journey. We’ve been through so much together, including a whole pandemic. They’ve really been so great and gracious, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.

  • ‘God of War’ TV Adaptation May Happen

As if it didn’t have enough giant fantasy and action adaptations either on the works or up on the service already, Prime Video is considering another. The latest target is PlayStation flagship title ‘God of War’.

According to Deadline, Prime Video is in negotiations to turn the mythology-based action/adventure game series into a TV show.

While neither Amazon Studios nor Sony would comment on the news, the trade site’s sources are saying that ‘The Expanse’ showrunners Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are involved alongside ‘The Wheel of Time’ overseer Rafe Judkins. Which means the lead teams of two big Prime Video titles – ‘The Expanse’ recently wrapped up its run, while ‘The Wheel of Time’ just started – would be involved in yet another large scale project.

Originally created by David Jaffe and launched by Santa Monica Studio in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, the first ‘God of War’ game was critically lauded and has since spawned 10 titles on different platforms. The concept was rebooted in 2018 with (in true current reboot trend) a game called ‘God of War’, which has a sequel in development.

Based in ancient mythology, the games’ story follows the titular protagonist, Kratos, a Spartan warrior and later the God of War, who was tricked into killing his family by his former master, the original Greek god of war Ares. This sets off a series of events that leads to wars with the mythological pantheons.

The Greek mythology era of the series sees Kratos follow a path of vengeance due to the machinations of the Olympian gods, while the Norse mythology era (as begun with the 2018 title), introduces his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, and shows an older Kratos on a path of redemption, which inadvertently brings the two into conflict with the Norse gods.

If it does move forward, it would mark just the latest video game title to make the leap to a new medium, as ‘Twisted Metal’ is in early development at streaming service Peacock with Anthony Mackie starring, and HBO is in production on ‘The Last Of Us’, with ‘Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin in charge and Pedro Pascal starring in the post-apocalyptic story. Then there’s ‘Halo’, which found a home at Paramount+ and Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’.

On the big screen, a ‘Sonic the Hedgehogsequel runs into theaters on April 8, with ‘Borderlands’, ‘Gears of War’, ‘Rabbids’ and sequels to ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Mortal Kombat’ all at different stages. The idea of a “video game curse” for movies certainly seems like a distant memory at this point, even if the hit ratio still isn’t particularly high.

A TV series at a deep-pocketed outlet like Prime Video certainly feels like the best outlet for a sprawling story of gods and monsters like ‘Gods of War’.

Prime Video, meanwhile, already has the fantastical likes of ‘Carnival Row’, the aforementioned ‘Wheel of Time’ and let’s not forget its massive, ambitious, and hugely expensive ‘Lord of the Rings’ adaptation ‘The Rings of Power’, which is kicking off its first season on the service this coming September.

  • Robert Downey Jr. and Shane Black Reunite for ‘Play Dirty’

Director Shane Black and star Robert Downey Jr., who have worked together on ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Iron Man 3’ are teaming back up again for an intriguing new prospect: they’re developing films and TV series based on Donald E. Westlake’s criminal character, Parker.

Working with ‘Kiss Kiss’ producer Joel Silver, the pair is first looking to make ‘Play Dirty’, which will see Downey Jr. playing Parker. He’s a professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic. He’s a craftsman. He’s brutal, brilliant. He’s also deadly. He’s whatever it takes to get the money and get away clean.

The Parker character was first introduced in 1962’s ‘The Hunter’ from Pocket Books (with Westlake writing under the pseudonym of Richard Stark) and featured in 23 other titles from the author, become a popular, hardboiled staple.

And this is far from the first time that the character has been brought to screens: he’s either been directly used or has inspired roles for actors including Lee Marvin (in 1967’s ‘Point Blank’), Jim Brown (1968’s ‘The Split’), Robert Duvall (in 1973’s ‘The Outfit’), Peter Coyote (in 1983’s ‘Slayground’), Mel Gibson (in 1999’s ‘Payback’) and Jason Statham in 2013’s ‘Parker’.

Yet the prospect of Black and Downey Jr. getting back together to make this new movie is even more exciting. Black wrote the script with Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi, the latter of whom he previously worked with on ‘The Nice Guys’.

Amazon has naturally been quick to snap up the prospect of more than one film and some TV spin-offs from the duo, though Deadline’s report doesn’t specify how much this deal covers.

Let’s not forget that Black is partly responsible for Downey’s presence as the lynchpin of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Years before they collaborated to winning effect on ‘Iron Man 3’, Black taking a chance on a then-career-troubled Downey for ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ is one of the reasons that Jon Favreau and the Marvel team thought of him for Tony Stark.

Plus, this puts them squarely back in the crime caper/thriller territory that ‘Kiss Kiss’ explored so well. As for Silver, he’s worked with Downey Jr. on several movies, including ‘Gothika’ the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ outings and, stretching back to the 1980s, cult classic comedy ‘Weird Science’. His collaboration connection with Black is just as deep, if not more so, for movies such as the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series and ‘The Last Boy Scout.’ In addition to ‘Kiss Kiss’, he also produced ‘The Nice Guys’.

Downey Jr. is typically busy right now – he’s got a role (along with, it seems half of Hollywood) in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and is co-starring for director Park Chan-wook in ‘The Sympathizer,’ which will see him playing multiple parts. Plus, assuming it actually happens, there’s a third ‘Sherlock Holmes’ somewhere on the horizon.

After critical and commercial misses such as ‘Doolittle’, it’s reassuring to see Downey Jr. back with two of his best collaborators. No word yet on when ‘Play Dirty’ may steal into theaters.
