Premiering on June 13th, Prime Video’s hit superhero series ‘The Boys’ is back for another explosive  fourth season. ‘The Boys’ is based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who also serve as executive producers and developed by executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Antony Starr and Chace Crawford about season 4 of ‘The Boys’, Homelander’s exploration into mortality and fatherhood, The Deep’s new outlook on life, and the hierarchy within The Seven.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Starr and Crawford, Erin Moriarty, Claudia Doumit, Karen Fukuyama and showrunner Eric Kripke.

Moviefone: Antony, this season deals a lot with the past, and with Homelander specifically, he’s dealing with having to face his own mortality and fatherhood. What has it been like for you to deep dive into that part of the character for the season?

Antony Starr: Honestly, as a non-parent, it was great. I get to go into parenting without dealing with the responsibility of having a kid. I think season 4 started somewhere midway through season three with the idea of mortality and everything that comes along with that. That naturally led to legacy, which is where we pick up in season 4, and that’s all about fatherhood and familial relationship. But I don’t think Homelander is equipped. He just doesn’t understand how that actually works. Loves the idea of it, but he just doesn’t know how to make it function, which is arguably true of many people. I keep saying if you want to look at your present, look at your past. If you want to look at your future, look at your present, right? So the future is Ryan, and the present is him. The past is where we go in episode four, and that is all in order to make himself a better father in his eyes for Ryan, which is a very selfish move, actually. It’s about his legacy. But he does love the kid, so there’s that.

MF: Chase, in this season The Deep gets some words of encouragement from Sage, a new member of The Seven, and after that he finds the courage to speak up. What is something about this season that you’re excited to explore for The Deep?

Chase Crawford: It was exactly what you just mentioned, to be honest. I mean, Sage obviously has super intelligence, hyper intelligence, and she knows how to play 4D chess, and she’s manipulating him a little bit. But I do think it’s funny that any compliment he takes, he’s like, “Thank you.” He really takes it to heart. It means a lot to him if someone, especially another superhero, and then of course, he’s attracted to her after that. Just a sucker for flattery. But I do like that he’s testing the bounds of his emotional world and sort of taking it out on other people. It just makes it interesting that he’s leaning into a bit of what Homelander leans into and being aggressive, and liking it in a way and really saying, “I’ve already done this thing. I’ve already done murders. I’m doing everything.” It’s ridiculous what he’s willing to do for Homelander, but it’s been fun to explore a new dimension of The Deep and also his relationship.

MF: Finally, Antony, can you talk about the hierarchy within The Seven and each of their motivations?

AS: It’s such a hierarchy in The Seven, everyone’s trying to ascend. It’s like a wolf pack constantly trying to get over each other. I’m always curious about the motives of the characters on this show because I think it’s always blurred. But I think it’s really interesting that all the superheroes are really self-motivated, and all the anarchists, per se, are really doing something. They’re really altruistic, and they want to do something for the masses, except Butcher, who’s a serial killer who wants to kill me because he thinks I did something that I didn’t do.

What Is The Plot Of ‘The Boys’?

In Season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander (Antony Starr), who is consolidating his power. Butcher (Karl Urban), with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

    • Charlie Hunnam and Adria Arjona are the latest casting announced for Prime Video’s ‘Criminal’.
    • The series adapts Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ award-winning graphic novels.
    • Richard Jenkins is also aboard.

Ed Brubaker has long been among the most respected creators working in comics, and he’s since parlayed that reputation into TV work, contributing or co-creating the likes of ‘Westworld’, ‘Too Old to Die Young’, ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and the upcoming ‘Batman: Caped Crusader.’

He’s also been busy developing a TV adaptation of one of his most famous graphic novel titles, ‘Criminal’, which has been set up at Prime Video. We now know that ‘Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam and  ‘Hit Man’ and ‘Andor’ actor Adria Arjona will be part of the cast.

‘Criminal’ adapts the sprawling graphic novel series created by Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips.

The adaptation is being described as the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.

Hunnam will, according to Deadline, play main character Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence.

Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.

Arjona will bring to life Greta, a sharp-tongued top-level car thief and driver and the widowed mother of Angie.

Ever since her husband died in a bank job gone bad, Greta has been battling with herself about how to escape the only life she’s ever known – and the only place she’s ever thrived. The problem is, she’s good at this. She’s looking for a big score, a lump of money she can use like a gun to shoot her and Angie out of this life and into another one.

    Who else is in ‘Criminal’?

Richard Jenkins and Sally Hawkins in 'The Shape of Water'.

Richard Jenkins (‘The Shape of Water’) was reported as joining the series last week, and he’ll play a character called Ivan, Leo’s dad’s best friend, who has always been an uncle figure to him. He used to be a robber and criminal but is now currently suffering from dementia. Leo is trying to care for him but realizes he’s more work than he can handle.

    Who is making ‘Criminal’?

    Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

Brubaker is closely involved with the show –– he wrote the pilot script and will run the show alongside Jordan Harper, a veteran of shows such as ‘The Mentalist’, ‘Gotham’ and ‘Hightown’.

On the directing side of things, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who made ‘Captain Marvel’) are handling the first four episodes of the show.

This was Brubaker’s comment when the show was originally announced:

“Sean and I have been building this world in our books for over a decade, and now to be able to bring it to life for Amazon is just incredible. And to have Amazon support the project the way they have and show so much faith in my and Jordan’s vision for the show is even more incredible.”

Here’s what Amazon/MGM’s Nick Pepper had to say about the new developments:

“‘Criminal is a beloved graphic novel created by the most iconic team in the history of comics. I know our global Prime Video customers will immediately embrace this story, and I look forward to working with Ed, Jordan, and the team to bring it to the screen.”

When will ‘Criminal’ be on screens?

Despite the cast coming together, we wouldn’t expect this one to be shooting much before later this year, so later in 2025 would seem to be the earliest likely release slot.

    • It’s based on a book by ‘The Town’s Chuck Hogan.

It’s not often the likes of Will Smith grace the casts of indie movies (and with an $80 million budget, it’s not exactly a tiny little project), but he will be taking a role in a new action thriller called ‘Sugar Bandits’.

The movie, which follows veteran soldiers banding together to tackle the drug trade in Boston (putting their lives once more at serious risk), is now looking to lock up distribution at the Cannes market.

‘Sugar Bandits’ is the story of Neal Maven and a crew of fellow Special Forces Iraq War veterans, who begin ripping off Boston-area drug dealers for profit, throwing their lives into jeopardy.

As Maven’s involvement deepens, two worrisome things he begins to suspect that their leader has a sinister ulterior motive, and he lusts after the leader’s girl — a tough former model with a drug problem. As the rip-off jobs get riskier, Maven and his crew are soon pursued by both a smart federal DEA agent and by a pair of psychopathic Jamaican hit men on a drug lords’ payroll.

When everything goes bad — and it goes very bad — Maven embarks on a one-man crusade to right the wrongs in which he unwittingly participated. Not everyone will survive his crusade, and Maven himself may not live to see the final outcome…

The movie is adapted by Chuck Hogan from his novel ‘Devils in Exile’. If Hogan’s name sounds familiar, it might be because his Boston-set work was previously adapted into ‘The Town’, which was directed by and starred Ben Affleck.

(L to R) Jamie Bell as Robert Ritter and Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly in Prime Video’s ‘Without Remorse.’

Shortly before the Cannes market kicked off, Italian director Stefano Sollima, who previously handled the likes of ‘Without Remorse’, ‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ and hit TV series ‘Gomorrah’, signed on to handle the movie.

That, in turn, has sparked a host of distribution deals for the indie movie, including Amazon’s Prime Video service snapping up the rights to the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, among other places.

There’s no word yet on a domestic distributor, but the movie is forging ahead, with a fall shoot planned in Montreal and Boston, with the aforementioned $80 million price tag.

What else is Will Smith working on?

It would appear that Smith is certainly shifting up a gear now that the impact of his Oscars slap incident with Chris Rock is starting to dissipate. He’ll be back on our screens in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ on June 7th.

According to Deadline, Smith won’t take the lead in this one, but is instead opting for a co-starring role.

When will ‘Sugar Bandits’ be in theaters?

Given that it has only just started to make distribution deals –– and isn’t even in production yet, we’d guess it’ll be arriving either late in 2025 or in 2026.

    • Peter Jackson is aboard to produce two new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies.
    • Andy Serkis will direct the first, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’.
    • Warner Bros. made the announcement, with a release planned for 2026.

We’ve known for some time that Warner Bros. and boss David Zaslav have been planning to dive into the studio’s back catalogue to rustle up new shows and movies based on known titles. A new series (at least one) based on ‘Harry Potter’ is also in the planning stages, and there are more moves afoot on the fantasy front. Big ones.

Yes, while the company already has one ‘Lord of the Rings’-based movie headed to screens later this year (animated conflict film ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’), Zaslav has now announced two live-action efforts with some hefty names attached.

Chief among the new team is one Peter Jackson –– you know, the man who brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories of Hobbits, Elves and other creatures to pop cultural behemoth status with his original trilogy of movies and then the ‘Hobbit’ adaptations.

While it appears that Jackson is not currently planning to direct either film, he will be deeply involved in the movies’ development.

Working alongside him, as they have since the beginning, are collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who will write the scripts for the films.

And another key player in the ‘LOTR’ franchise, Andy Serkis –– who regularly squeezed into performance capture suits to play slinky Ring-coveter Gollum, is also back, and he’s aboard to direct the first confirmed movie, which is perhaps fittingly (working) titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.

Serkis will also be getting back into his performance capture rig to star as the titular creature.

Warner Bros. wouldn’t be drawn on specifics just yet, but let’s be honest… It kind of speaks for itself. And there is at least one section of Tolkien’s work that focuses on just such a search (Aragorn is the unlucky person tasked with tracking down the riddle-spinner).

What form exactly the new story takes remains to be seen, but it has already been adapted into a fan film and a card game.

As for the other movie? That’s even more of a mystery for now, but the studio has said it’ll dig into unexplored stories.

Here’s Jackson, Walsh and Boyes’ statement on their return:

“It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker — Gollum. As life-long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”

    And here’s Serkis:

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious… .”

Finally, this is the statement from Warner Bros. film bosses Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy:

“For over two-decades, moviegoers have embraced the Lord of the Rings film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision. We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ (working title), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the Lord of the Rings cinematic history.”

When will the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies be in theaters?

The plan for at least one of the new movies is for it to be in theaters by 2026.

What does this mean for Amazon’s future ‘Lord of the Rings’ plans?

As of right now, nothing: the two companies have different deals with the rights holders, Embracer Group AB. While Warner Bros. is focusing on movies (with ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ landing on December 13th), Amazon’s Prime Video service seems more interested on building out its TV universe, following the successful launch of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ in 2022. A second season has been filming and is due to land this year (though no official date has been provided yet).

But the new announcement is certainly giant-sized news for fans and a fair win for Warner Bros., since Jackson and the team are the people most closely associated with the movies’ success and the overall dominance of Middle-earth in the early 2000s. What the Tolkien family actually thinks is probably not so positive, but having sold the rights, they have little control these days over what the giant corporations do with the stories included in the different deals.

Now we just wait and see what happens with the new Warners movies. But one thing is clear: unlike the Elven folk, the adaptations of Professor Tolkien’s work are not planning to sail off to Valinor any time soon.

Toby Emmerich the former Warner Bros. Motion Picture chief, is one of the main producers and had this to say:

“I’ve been a fan of Peter Farrelly as both a filmmaker and a person since getting to work with him on the music for Dumb and Dumber. But it was ‘Green Book’ that made me think of Pete for this inspiring screenplay. Christian Baha and I feel blessed to have Pete at the helm for this movie. And like the unknown Stallone starring in ‘Rocky’, Pete will be conducting a worldwide search to discover another actor who just needs one shot — in ‘I Play Rocky’ — to show the world what he can do.”

His fellow producer Christian Baha added this:

“When I first read Peter Gamble’s energetic and poignant script, I knew it captured something very special. The story of ‘I Play Rocky’ is as unique as Sylvester Stallone himself, a seeming everyman with an undeniable gift who needs to share it with the world and refuses to take “no” for an answer. And like the hero of our film, Baha Productions needed grit and determination as we fought for years to make this project into a reality. We are so fortunate to have teamed up with Toby Emmerich and Peter Farrelly, two legendary talents who not only share but enhance our vision of the film.”

‘Blade Runner 2099’ follows on from 1982’s ‘Blade Runner’, the Ridley Scott movie that introduced us to the world of rogue artificial lifeforms known as Replicants, and the enforcers who track them down (Harrison Ford played the most notable example, Rick Deckard). It meditated on existence and reality, and though it didn’t launch well at the box office, it has long since become a cult classic.

In 2017, Warner Bros. gave Denis Villeneuve the opportunity to create a sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, with Ford returning as Deckard and Ryan Gosling starring as ‘K’, a replicant who works as a Blade Runner. It explored some of the mysteries of Deckard’s story and some new angles, but also didn’t really soar at the box office.

Since then, we’ve had video games and an anime take, but ‘Blade Runner 2099’ is the first new live-action attempt.

Prime Video has revealed zero official plot details about the show, but scooper Daniel Richtman has tracked down what is reportedly the basic synopsis for the show.

Given that this is from an unofficial source, prepare a grain of salt, but otherwise, read on:

“In Los Angeles 2099, Cora lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen (our best guess for Yeoh’s character), a Blade Runner who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.”

While Ridley Scott has an executive producer credit, he won’t be directly involved. Instead, Silka Luisa of ‘Shining Girls’ is showrunner and ‘Shogun’s Jonathan van Tulleken as its primary director.

The show, once planned to film in Belfast, Ireland, has since relocated to Prague.

  • TV Review: ‘Fallout’

Launching on Prime Video with all eight episodes on Thursday April 11th, ‘Fallout’ manages the tough ask of bringing a complex and sprawling video game to life in a way that will feel familiar to fans of the game and its darkly humorous style while also spinning its own tale set in that universe.

Continuing the trend for successful video game adaptations, the new show is a wild, freewheeling and well-acted ride through a landscape that feels familiar and yet has plenty of invention to spare.

    Is ‘Fallout’ a Worthy Adaptation?

With their ambitious adaptation of ‘Westworld’, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy proved they have what it takes to bring a popular story to life in a new way. And even if that series ultimately ended up trying itself up in intellectual knots, it had a lot to say about technology, humanity and society whilst presenting some unique visions and concepts.

‘Fallout’, which never pretends to explore such high-minded ideals, is its own way smart, satirical and entertaining while also being far wilder and out there in execution. And that’s thanks primarily to show co-creators and overseers Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, who really let loose when it comes to the oddball characters and creatures populating this story.

If you’re an established fan of Tim Cain’s games, then you’ll find plenty to enjoy here. And if not, you won’t be turned off.

    ‘Fallout’: Script and Direction

Perhaps the smartest move that Robertson-Dworet and Wagner made is to set this TV iteration of ‘Fallout’ in its own story, borrowing concepts and some key characters from the game, but introducing us to an out-there scorched Earth primarily through the eyes of devout and plucky Vault Dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell). As with the game, we experience the craziness that lurks outside the protective doors initially in contained form when her Vault is attacked, and her father (Kyle McLachlan’s Hank) kidnapped.

It makes for a handy, organic way to provide the necessary exposition as Lucy makes her way through this terrifying, beautifully-designed world, meeting dangerous people and unusual creatures created in the centuries since America was set aflame in nuclear combat.

Lucy’s story in particular works well as a narrative focal point, but there’s also some welcome depth to the antagonist of the piece, the Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins. Looking for all the world like a cousin to Marvel’s Red Skull, he’s also a combo of grizzled gunslinger and bitter warrior. And the show digs further into his backstory in ways that we won’t spoil here.

Which is not to say Nolan in particular doesn’t have a hand in the show –– he directs the first three episodes, dictating the tone and style of the show, and here feels like a director unrestrained after the statelier, brain-fodder feel of ‘Westworld’ (for all that show’s bursts of violence). He and the creative team have crafted a truly lived-in look to the ‘Fallout’ world, with distinctive characters and intriguing plot turns.

    ‘Fallout’: Performances

    Ella Purnell (Lucy) in 'Fallout'.

Purnell is more than able to carry the show as Lucy, who has her preconceived notions of how the world should work quickly shattered when she ventures beyond the Vault following its breaching by raiders. It’s through her eyes that we see most of the story, and Purnell brings plenty of charisma to the part, along with a strength and steel that Lucy needs to survive.

Yet its Goggins who has the most to do here –– he’s the first character we meet in the time before the nuclear attack, his long-lived nature is explored and explained, and there are flashbacks to the man he was back then. It’s a fully-rounded role and one that the experienced character fills with gusto and his usual scuffed charm. There’s a sly humor to his present-day demeanor and some real pathos in his past.

    Aaron Moten (Maximus) in 'Fallout'.

If there is a weak link among the show’s stories, it’s perhaps in Aaron Moten’s Maximus, the young, brutalized member of the Brotherhood of Steel, an armed force dedicated to unearthing the former world one item at a time and enforcing their own mechanized brand of rough justice on the current one. While the attitude of the Brotherhood and his own rebellious reaction to it offers some fun, it’s perhaps a little more straightforward than some of the other elements and doesn’t work as well.

Which is no fault of Moten, who contributes a likeable, conflicted performance in the role. Around them is an excellent cast of supporting characters, with Michael Emerson it’s best to experience for the first time on screen, so as not to diminish its entertainment factor. Suffice to say, it’s the sort of quirky performance in which he excels.

    ‘Fallout’: Final Thoughts

‘Fallout’ should serve as both a way into the story for those who’ve never played the game and a worthy extension of the world for those who have completed the various releases and have a Vault Boy Funko Pop giving them a thumbs-up from their desk.

We’ve seen any number of post-apocalyptic stories through the years, and if this borrows some common tropes and visuals, it has more than enough tweaks and humor to keep it feeling unique and often laugh out loud funny –– when it’s not being gruesome. But it’s always compelling and can stand proudly among the better adaptations of game content.

‘Fallout’ receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

What is the Plot of ‘Fallout’?

The show depicts the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear exchange in an alternate history where advances in nuclear technology after WWII led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society and a subsequent resource war. The survivors took refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults, built to preserve humanity in the event of nuclear annihilation. Two centuries later, a young woman (Ella Purnell), a descendant of the original “Vault Dwellers” from one of many Vaults, leaves behind the only life she has ever known to venture out into the dangerously hostile and savage Wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney about the second season of their popular series ‘American Rust: Broken Justice,’ where it picks up, Grace and Dell’s relationship, and the themes of the series.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Daniels, Tierney, Mark Pellegrino, Alex Neustaedter, Julie Mayorga, Luna Lauren Velez, Rob Yang, and executive producers Dan Futterman and Adam Rapp.

Moviefone: To begin with, Jeff, can you talk about where Dell is and what he is doing when the new season starts?

Jeff Daniels: Well, we’re in Buell, Pennsylvania for some of it. Dell is now in Pittsburgh working with the Pittsburgh Police Department. We’re about four months after the end of season one, four months later I think it was. Dell has moved into the police department, and he is working again as an investigator or detective and has a new partner. He has a new bunch of people in his life, including Grace, who is now, I mean we’re basically together in Dell’s cabin down in Buell. So, on weekends Dell kind of goes down to the cabin to see Grace. So that’s still there and then a whole bunch of stuff starts happening. Buckle up.

MF: Maura, can you talk about Grace’s relationship with Dell this season and her devotion to him?

Maura Tierney: I mean I think that will be born out in this season as well. I think she even steps up in her commitment to protecting him or having his back. So, she’s starting from physically a different place because she’s living with Dell, but he’s spending a lot of time in Pittsburgh. So, it’s really a brand-new start for her this season.

MF: Jeff, how would you describe the themes explored in ‘American Rust: Broken Justice’?

JD: I will say that it’s whatever your definition of the American dream is. For these people in this show, maybe it’s just like a stress-free life. Maybe it’s just peace. Maybe it’s just a peaceful relationship between Dell and Grace, which is all they really want. I keep going back to, we’re in the Midwest, you’re constantly told how simple and basic you are compared to the coasts. But underneath and inside these simple and basic people in Pittsburgh are some very complicated feelings, emotions, circumstances, and I like that. If there’s a theme in complicated behind the simple, it’s not everything’s what you think it is, just on the surface, but all that plays into what we’re trying to do with the show.

MF: Finally, Maura, what were some of the themes of the series that you were excited to explore this season?

MT: Peace is not all easy to come by if you don’t have any money or a job. It’s a luxury in a lot of ways. So, I think if you say the “American Dream,” I think that is a goal to have some sense of peace, contentment or safety, which is not achievable for everybody in the show or in our country right now.

What is the Plot of ‘American Rust: Broken Justice’?

American Rust: Broken Justice takes us back to the fictional small town of Buell, Pennsylvania. Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives after the harrowing events of Season One. Season Two picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy that threatens everyone in this small, tight-knit town.

Moviefone: To begin with, Cirocco, can you talk about coming up with the idea for this series and creating the show?

Cirocco Dunlap: Yeah, I love sci-fi, and I watch a lot of sci-fi. I was thinking about classic movies like ‘Groundhog Day,’ ‘Alien,’ and thinking about those main characters and how they’ve got real horrible ailments, an alien in your stomach, or stuck in a time loop. I was thinking, “Wouldn’t it be fun if they had somewhere to go, someone to treat them for those illnesses?” I thought, “These main characters in classic sci-fi films could become tertiary patients in our world.”

MF: Maya, can you describe your character, Dr. Vlam, and creating the voice?

Maya Rudolph: Dr. Vlam is a robot intern who’s lived over 20,000 years and is devoted to her present craft, which is being a doctor and takes an enormous amount of pride in it. But that doesn’t stop her from talking about her past where she’s lived as a warrior king, and mother of 500. She’s done a lot. So, she likes to let everybody know she’s been around for a long time and its sort of a mix of a lot of pride and at the same time, happy to be there to serve her doctors, to serve Sleech and Klak. She just wants to do a really good job because she looks up to them so, so much.

MF: Finally, Natasha, same question. How would you describe your character, Nurse Tup, and creating her voice?

Natasha Lyonne: Nurse Tup is a nihilistic optimist. She loathes small talk, which I personally adore, and she really loves the hospital. So, she must buffer between Sleech and Klak from blowing up the joint in all their creative genius. So, she has pointy ears and in a surprising twist, a big mop of hair, six legs and a tail. So, I pretty much did a come as you are. I thought, “That is what I look like.” But Cirocco really worked with me so much on our first session to kind of really dial in exactly the vibe of who she was. Then also the other character, Zaylarx. I love that character. Zalyarx gets into trouble with Vlam and they have a good, rowdy time. Troublemakers. So yeah, good times.

    Preview:

    • Nic Cage could bring his ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ character to live-action.
    • Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Oren Uziel are all involved.
    • The series is in development at Prime Video.

This past week has not seen Sony’s attempts to make Marvel content showered in glory. ‘Madame Web’, the latest movie from the company to feature a side-character from the ‘Spider-Man’ universe, has gone down in flames with critics and audiences.

There is some good news for the studio, though, as word has emerged that its developing live-action ‘Spider-Man Noir’ series, set up at Amazon’s Prime Video service might be getting a shot of cool from Nicolas Cage eyeing a deal to star.

The show, which would adapt the hard-boiled, tough-talking comic book character mainstream audiences really came to know via ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, has been in development since at least last year with ‘Spider-Verse’ duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller working alongside ‘The Lost City’s Oren Uziel to craft it.

What’s the story of ‘Spider-Man Noir’?

    2018's 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.'
2018’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.’ Photo: Sony Pictures Releasing.

Nothing has been officially released about the storyline for the potential show, but if it even roughly follows the character’s narrative, we’ll be seeing a grizzled, older take on Peter Parker patrolling the streets of a monochrome 1930s New York as he seeks to avenge the deaths of his uncle Ben Parker to the hands of the cannibal Adrian Toomes and his mentor Ben Urich by the city’s major crime lord, Norman Osborn.

His Spidey origin story? He’s bitten by a seemingly venomous spider he unearths while investigating a smuggling ring, awakes inside a cocoon and emerges from it, now possessing super-human abilities similar to a spider. So yeah, that old tale.

Noir (as he’s sometimes simply known) made his paper debut in the pages of his eponymous comic in 2009, created by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky Carmine Di Giandomenico and Marko Djurdjevic, but he’s become best known via ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ where he helped Miles Morales, Gwen Stacey and the others sort out the multiversal issues caused by the Kingpin’s machinations.

How is Nicolas Cage involved in the ‘Spider-Man Noir’ series?

Cage provided the gruff vocals for Noir in his ‘Spider-Verse’ movie scenes, and while sequel ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ used archive recordings as Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacey gathered the team from the first movie to launch an attempt to help Miles Morales, signs are Cage will have a larger role in the next one, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’.

Of course, the series version will all depend on Cage actually making a deal, but The Ankler reports he’s in serious talks.

What else is happening with Sony’s Spider-shows?

    Marvel Comics' Silk.

The news is not as great for ‘Silk: Spider-Society’, which was announced around the same time as the Noir show.

That series, about Cindy Moon, a Korean American classmate of the more contemporary Peter Parker’s, who is similarly bitten by a radioactive spider and possesses an advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense), is seemingly being paused for a creative overhaul with ‘The Walking Dead’ veteran show-runner still on board developing that show alongside Lord and Miller.
