Jake Gyllenhaal And Dar Salim Makes A Dynamic Team

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors of his generation. On top of having experience with war movies, his resume is filled with a wide variety of roles – from crime videographer Louis Bloom (‘Nightcrawler‘) to Mysterio (‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘), Gyllenhaal is a fantastic choice to play Sergeant John Kinley. Playing opposite Gyllenhaal is Dar Salim, as Afghan interpreter Ahmed. The two characters did not like each other at the beginning but were forced to work together. Through the movie, the bond strengthens as they learn to trust each other.

Salim talks about the key to playing Ahmed:

“He’s someone that you can relate to. He’s a guy who will do anything to keep his family safe. He just wants to give his children the opportunities that he doesn’t have himself. But even a man like that, when he’s faced with the ultimate choices, it’s a reminder that most of us have good in us and that we will do what’s right in that moment. That’s the mirror of the relationship between those two men. So that was the key to playing Ahmed, I think.”

Guy Ritchie Takes A Different Screenplay Process With This Movie

For this movie, director Guy Ritchie had a slightly different approach in the ways of the screenplay. It wasn’t a completely finished script but the director knew what story he wanted to tell and where he was going to go with it. Each morning, he would discuss the scenes with the actors – how to work on them, bouncing ideas off them. From there, the director would write scenes, making necessary edits or changes as they come up.

Jake Gyllenhaal talks more about his experience on-set and the different process:

“Then when we got there, it was a process of, “Okay, come to set. Here’s the scenes today. How do we start working on them? What are your ideas?” Then he would write in the morning. He writes very quickly. He’d write in the morning and write us the scene. He’d either change the scene or edit it, or sometimes write the whole thing out based on his thoughts from the night before or our discussions. Then we’d go out there and we’d play it. The next day we would add on to the board. As the board got bigger, he’d be able to have more to play with and references that we had done. Then we’d start telling the story that once existed as a foundation of a home.”

  • Guy Ritchie Directing Disney’s Live-Action ‘Hercules’

Walt Disney Pictures' 1997 animated film, 'Hercules.'
Walt Disney Pictures’ 1997 animated film, ‘Hercules.’

Eyebrows were understandably raised when Disney hired Guy Ritchie to direct its live action take on ‘Aladdin‘. He was, after all, better known for his crime dramas and comedies, and aside from his ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movies, his attempts at bigger franchise films – ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ and ‘live. – either hadn’t won much praise (Arthur) or stumbled at the box office (U.N.C.L.E.).

Yet the results speak for themselves, and ‘Aladdin’ ended up being Ritchie’s most successful movie at the box office, with more than $1 billion in the bank. Everyone is naturally inclined to show a little more confidence then, upon learning that the director is now on board the studios’ planned new take on ‘Hercules’.

The 1997 cartoon version followed the recognizable Greek myth-based narrative of Hercules (Tate Donovan), the son of Zeus and Hera, who is stripped of his immortality as an infant and must become a true hero to reclaim it.

It was, per Disney custom at the time loaded with songs and sidekicks, and there’s every chance that the studio is looking to replicate that, albeit with real people and a hefty effects budget.

This ‘Hercules’ has been in the works for a while, with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo producing via their AGBO company. ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Expendables’ writer Dave Callaham has worked on a draft of the screenplay, but Disney is in the process of hiring other writers to take a crack, and we’d imagine Ritchie, who has a writing credit on ‘Aladdin’ alongside John August, will have his own input.

Will Smith in Guy Ritchie's 'Aladdin.'
Will Smith in Guy Ritchie’s ‘Aladdin.’

Ritchie is a busy man of late. He followed ‘Aladdin’ with the sort of chatty criminal caper that helped launch his career in ‘The Gentlemen’, then pivoted into action thriller territory with ‘Wrath of Man’, starring Jason Statham.

The director stuck with his old pal Statham for upcoming action comedy ‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ which also stars Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Hugh Grant, and Eddie Marsan in the story of a Hollywood actor recruited to help take down the sale of a deadly weapon. ‘Operation Fortune’ is due in theaters this year.

And he’s followed that with ‘The Interpreter’, in which Jake Gyllenhaal plays Sergeant John Kinley, a soldier in Afghanistan whose life is saved by the local interpreter (Dar Salim’s Ahmed) with whom he’s teamed when a mission becomes violent. After his return to the States, John learns that Ahmed and his family haven’t been granted passage out of Afghanistan, so he heads back to help them escape before local militia fighters can close in.

Finally, there’s the small matter of a sequel to ‘Aladdin’, which Disney has in development, but is likely to be overtaken by any movement on ‘Hercules’, assuming Ritchie is interested in coming back to that world. And any discussion about an ‘Aladdin; follow-up naturally includes the question of whether Will Smith would be asked back to play the genie again.

Next up for the company in terms of movies adapted from its animated output is ‘Pinocchio’, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, due on Disney+ on September 8th.

  • First Trailer for George Miller’s ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’

    Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba

There were some who thought George Miller might be planning to follow the audacious action spectacle of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ with something a little more sedate. And when ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ was announced to primarily star Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, some might have pictured a two-hander drama set mostly in one location.

To those people we say, “never underestimate George Miller”. And indeed, from the evidence of its first trailer, ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ is another crazed, fantastical movie that channels the likes of ‘Aladdin’ for the story of a genie and three wishes.

Miller, though, worked with his daughter, Augusta Gore, to adapt AS Byatt’s short story ‘The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye. ‘Longing’ follows Dr. Alithea Binnie (Swinton) an academic who is content with life (by her own admission, she’s happily alone with no siblings, widowed following the death of her husband) and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she picks up a mysterious bottle at a marketplace. In the spirit of every story like this, she attempts to clean it, and releases a Djinn (Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

This presents two problems: First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both…

    OLHp0Rrm

And if you still harbored thoughts that this would simply be Elba and Swinton sitting around clad in bathrobes in a hotel room chatting about his history, think again: Miller has conjured up an epic, effects-laden fantasy that spans time and place, recounting the various people that he has dealt with over the years.

It’s all very trippy and magical, and at times looks very intense. All anchored, of course by the experienced likes of Swinton and Elba. The cast for the movie also includes Kaan Guldur, Alyla Browne, Nicolas Mouawad, David Collins, and Angie Tricker.

Miller faced big challenges shooting this one, originally planning to bring to life the story – which journeys between the courts of the Queen of Sheba and the Ottoman rulers, the bedroom of a 19th Century Turkish slave courtesan, and all the way to present-day London – by shooting in various locations around the world. Until, of course, the pandemic put a halt to all that.

“Our intention was to shoot in Europe, London, and Istanbul. We had locations, we had all the government permits and so on,” he tells Deadline. “And then Covid hit. We were literally there in Europe, and we weren’t too far off shooting, but of course, the film was then delayed several months because of Covid, and we eventually had to relocate the whole thing to Australia.”

‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ will make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, which is currently going on in France. It’ll appear in theaters on August 31st.

  • Comedian and Actor Gilbert Gottfried Dies aged 67

    Comedian Gilbert Gottfried
Comedian Gilbert Gottfried in the 2017 documentary ‘Gilbert.’

Gilbert Gottfried, the comedian who used his trademark shrill and laugh-getting talent to score roles in a variety of movies and TV series, has died. He was 67.

Born in Brooklyn 1955, Gottfried kicked off his career aged 15 performing amateur stand-up comedy in New York, quickly acquiring a reputation as “the comedian’s comedian” for his quick-fire repartee and willingness to push the boundaries.

That got him noticed by ‘Saturday Night Live’, and he joined the cast for Season 6 in 1980. Yet what is usually seen as a major ambition for performers became something of a low point for Gottfried, who was rarely cast in sketches, lasting 12 episodes.

And surprisingly, given that he became famous for his comically screechy voice and squinting faces, Gottfried employed neither on ‘SNL’. Despite his lack of access, he did at least manage to secure one recurring character, that of talk show host Leo Waxman in fake show ‘What’s It All About?’ He also impersonated Roman Polanski and politician David Alan Stockman.

Gottfried’s talent for mimicry saw him become a regular guest on Howard Stern’s radio show, where he would regularly impersonate Andrew “Dice” Clay, Bela Lugosi, and others.

In movie terms, he enjoyed a successful career both in front of the camera and as a voice artist, making his debut in 1984 with ‘The House of God’. But his best-known roles included ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’, playing accountant Sidney Bernstein, opposite his friend Eddie Murphy, the ‘Problem Child’ movies, which saw him as adoption agent Igor Peabody.

He was an in-demand voice talent, lending his roles to an incredibly eclectic set of TV series including ‘Superboy’, ‘The Ren and Stimpy Show’, ‘Duckman’, ‘Superman: The Animated Series’, ‘Cyberchase’, and ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’. Gottfried was the voice of the Aflac duck in commercials until 2011.

His most famous voice role was as Iago the wise-cracking parrot in Disney’s animated ‘Aladdin’ – a character he played through various sequels and TV spin-offs. Asked how he prepared to play the bird, he replied, “I did the whole De Niro thing. I moved to South America! I lived in the trees!”

Never afraid to use vulgarity or mention sensitive topics in his comedy, Gottfried’s jokes did sometimes get him in trouble, including bits about 9/11 and the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the latter of which saw him dismissed from work with Aflac.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family wrote on Twitter.

Between 2014 and his death, Gottfried hosted a podcast, ‘Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast’, which featured interviews with veteran actors, comedians, musicians, and comedy writers and allowed him to display his considerable knowledge of classic movies.

‘Aladdin’ Deleted Song ‘Desert Moon’ Proves Love Is Not Dead

    Disney

Love is in the air under the “Desert Moon.”

Disney dropped a deleted song from the live-action remake of “Aladdin,” an aching and beautiful duet between Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and Aladdin (Mena Massoud).

The billion dollar hit only featured one new song, “Speechless,” performed by Scott. But it seems this deleted number was planned, yet somehow didn’t make the theatrical cut.

The scene starts with Jasmine in her room, singing as she gazes at the moon in the night sky. Then, Aladdin joins in, singing while looking at the same moon from the desert.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciOrk0iD_iA&feature=youtu.be

“Desert moon light the way, till the dark turns to day / Like a lamp in the lonely night, bright and blue,” they sing together.

Composer Alan Menken told People, “So many of my lost gems find their way back into the spotlight; songs like ‘Human Again’ from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Proud of Your Boy’ from ‘Aladdin, ‘‘If I Never Knew You’ from ‘Pocahontas’ and ‘Shooting Star’ from ‘Hercules.’”

He continued, “Now a lost treasure from the ‘Aladdin’ live-action movie, ‘Desert Moon’ has its moment. I’m so thrilled to be able to share this magical song with the world.”

The “Desert Moon” deleted scene is available on the “Aladdin” Digital HD release today and on Blu-ray September 10.
