ABC Developing Marvel Show Led by Female Superhero

    ABC

With “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” set to end after its upcoming seventh season, ABC is in “active talks” to bring another Marvel show to the network. And it would be led by a female superhero.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline, “I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular.”

Burke did not reveal which character might headline the show, but she teased that that it would be “something brand new, mostly” and fit in with its strategy of female-focused superheroes.

This potential series is unrelated to a show ABC had in the works last year with “Wonder Woman” writer Allan Heinberg. That project was about female characters with superpowers, but did not make it past development.

Besides “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Marvel has two other series on television, Freeform’s “Cloak and Dagger” and Hulu’s “Runaways” (which are doing a crossover episode). They are also making a handful of shows for the forthcoming Disney+ streaming platform, including “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “WandaVision,” “What If…?,” and “Hawkeye.”

    ABC

Will you accept another rose, “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise”? Yes, they will!

ABC has renewed the two reality dating shows for new seasons to air in 2020. Season 15 of “The Bachelorette” concluded last week; Season 6 of “Bachelor in Paradise” premieres tonight.

Last week’s “Bachelorette” finale, which revealed the outcome of Hannah Brown’s question for love, was the show’s highest-rated broadcast in two years.

The two-night finale saw Brown get engaged to Nashville singer-songwriter Jed Wyatt. But in “After the Final Rose,” Brown confronted Wyatt about reports that he had a serious girlfriend that he never broke up before filming began.

Brown then ended their relationship and asked runner-up Tyler Cameron on a date.

Meanwhile, “The Bachelor” has already been renewed for its next season, to air in January 2020. All three shows are hosted by Chris Harrison.

There’s another new Ariel in town.

Last month, Disney cast Halle Bailey to play the mermaid princess in a live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” Now, ABC (a corporate sibling) has found its own star for its live musical special.

Auli’i Cravalho, who was the voice of “Moana,” will star as the rebellious daughter of King Triton who longs to live on dry land.

ABC also announced that Queen Latifah will play villain Ursula, while Shaggy will be Ariel’s crustacean friend, Sebastian.

The musical event will feature intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and Tony-winning Broadway stage version.

The production was originally slated for October 2017, but was delayed for reworking.

“Little Mermaid” will air Tuesday, November 5, at 8 p.m. as part of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise.

    ABC

The beginning of the end of “Modern Family” is officially upon us, and it’s bittersweet.

The show’s cast got together for the first table read of the final season, and they took a group photo that brought our emotions up to a level 10. In it, they recreated a photo they took together after their first table read, 10 years ago. The original photo includes series regulars Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Julie Bowen, Ariel Winter, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet, and the new one has the full group, plus Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. Oh, how times have changed.

“Modern Family” co-creator Steve Levitan shared the photo via Instagram on Wednesday, writing, “Ten years ago we took the first cast photo outside our first #modernfamily table read. Today, the ending begins.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the cast’s transformation. In January, for example, the “Modern Family” social media team put together a post for the 10-year challenge.

What’s different this time is the nostalgia factor of seeing the cast come together for a final first table read, along with the visual proof of how long they’ve been a part of our lives. It’s going to be an emotional ride from here on out.

    “Modern Family” Season 11 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  • Lea Michele to Star in ABC Holiday Movie ‘Same Time, Next Christmas’

    ABC

Cable networks like Hallmark have become synonymous with Christmas movies in recent years, and now, traditional broadcast outlets are getting in on the holiday flick action, too: ABC announced this week that it will air an original Yuletide romance, featuring star Lea Michele.

According to Variety, the former “Glee” actress — who most recently starred on ABC’s short-lived sitcom “The Mayor” — will be headlining “Same Time, Next Christmas,” which sounds like it will more than satisfy viewers who are hungry for additional seasonal content to consume on a cold winter’s night. Here’s the scoop on the film’s plot, per the trade:

Michele will play Olivia Henderson, a young woman who met her childhood sweetheart during her family’s annual Christmas visit to Hawaii. After being separated by distance and years, the two reunite at the same Hawaii resort years later and the old chemistry between them flares up anew, but circumstances conspire to keep them apart.

Veteran director Stephen Herek — who’s helmed everything from “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” to “The Mighty Ducks” to “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” and in recent years directed the Dolly Parton made-for-TV flicks “Coat of Many Colors” and “Christmas of Many Colors” — is on board to call the shots behind the camera. Freeform Studios is producing the flick for ABC.

No word yet on an exact premiere date, but “Same Time, Next Christmas” is expected to air on ABC sometime in December.

    ABC

The case is closed and class is dismissed — “How to Get Away With Murder” is ending after its upcoming sixth season on ABC.

The final season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced dramawill follow Annalise Keating (Emmy winner Viola Davis) and her students in their final semester of law school. According to ABC’s description, “The deception, fear and guilt binding Professor Keating to her students prove deadlier than ever.”

“HTGAWM” premiered in September 2014, joining “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” to form the Shondaland Thursday night block known as “TGIT. Davis took home the Best Actress Emmy the next year for her searing performance.

“Viola Davis made television history with her unforgettable portrayal of iconic female antihero Annalise Keating,” ABC entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement. “I am eternally grateful to her, [creator] Pete Nowalk and Shondaland for creating and bringing to life such a smart, sophisticated and groundbreaking series that has long been an integral part of Thursday nights on ABC.”

Nowalk added, “For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.

“I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans. The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm. I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.”

ABC also released a sneak peek of Season 6, which flashes back to shocking moments from the past five seasons:

Word on the street is that Meghan McCain is unhappy on “The View,” but as of now, ABC expects her to return for the upcoming season.

The Daily Beast reported Wednesday that the conservative co-host is “seriously considering calling it quits,” citing sources close to McCain. CNN then followed up with a report of its own that quotes an anonymous senior network employee as saying McCain is “miserable” at ABC. Yet, despite such reports, ABC News said in a statement that it expects her to return.

“The co-hosts and ‘The View’ have had an incredible season and we expect them all back for an epic year ahead,” ABC News said, per Variety.

McCain, the daughter of the late Senator John McCain, first started appearing on “The View” as a guest co-host before officially joining in 2017. She has frequently gone head-to-head on-camera with her liberal co-hosts and there have also been reports that she’s been difficult behind-the-scenes, as both The Daily Beast and CNN note. It has reportedly taken an emotional toll. One source told The Daily Beast that McCain feels “so exhausted and defeated.”

Whether or not the co-host is actually serious about quitting the show is still up for debate. While some of her friends have indicated that she’s not sure if she wants to renew her contract, a TV exec connected to “The View” indicated to CNN that this could be a negotiation strategy. Whatever the case, it’s clear ABC wants — and expects — to keep her.

  • 17 Things You Never Knew About the Hit J.J. Abrams Series ‘Alias’

17 Things You Never Knew About the Hit J.J. Abrams Series ‘Alias’

After 15 years, Sydney Bristow is still one of the best female heroes ever.

Thank J.J. Abrams before he was, you know J.J. Abrams. And as cool as his work on the big-screen is (see “Star Wars” and “Star Trek”), the only thing cooler was what he did with a TV show about a grad student-turned-double agent for the CIA.

“Alias” made Jennifer Garner a star, put Bradley Cooper on the map, and put Abrams on track to one day blow up Ethan Hunt, give us a new Captain Kirk, and kill Han Solo. As its pilot — an all-timer — turns 15 on Sept. 30, check out these 17 things you need to know — straight from SD-6. (And, no, not one of them is an explanation about the whole Rambaldi thing. But cool floating red ball of doom, though, bro.)
    1. Garner auditioned five times for the role of Sydney Bristow.

    2. She found out she got the part while at the movies watching “Traffic.” “I was in the middle of the movie, and my phone started to ring and I dodged outside,” Garner told TVLine in a recent oral history of the show. “It was finally, finally mine and I just remember watching the rest of ‘Traffic’ like it was a romantic comedy. [Laughs]”

    3. Lucky for Garner, series creator Abrams wrote the pilot with her in mind after having worked with the actor on “Felicity.” “When I was writing the pilot, she was in my mind as a very strong contender for the role,” Abrams revealed to TVLine. “My wife, Katie, said: ‘You have to write something for Jen.’ And so Jen kept coming up in my mind as a potential candidate for this. But I was trying not to think of Jen because I wanted Sydney to be her own thing that then Jen could bring to life, or whomever. But there was no one else I really considered but her.”

    4. Not everyone was on Team Garner. Abrams revealed that some TV honchos were apprehensive about Garner in the lead role. One exec was particularly concerned with her being “hot enough.”

    5. “The Office” star Jenna Fischer also auditioned for Sydney, but was never called back. Why? According to Fischer: “They said they liked my acting but I wasn’t hot enough.”

    6. Garner’s opening narration, which was used throughout Season 1, was literally phoned in. While on location, the actor read it through the phone to Abrams, who was on the other end recording it.
    7. Michael Vartan, who played Sydney’s handler and future lover, Vaughn, was not sure he would get the job. “We do the first read — and I was sweating profusely,” Vartan said. “I mean, it was embarrassing. I said, ‘J.J., I can’t do this.’ He was like, ‘Yes, you can.’”

    8. Kevin Weisman is quoted as saying he “kind of based” his portrayal of twitchy spy-tech guru Marshall on J.J. Abrams — a fact who would reveal to the show’s creator years later.

    9. At one point, the writers considered that Sydney would hook up with fan-favorite villain Julian Sark (David Anders). Why was it abandoned, other than being gross? According to writer Josh Applebaum: “We were like, ‘Sydney would never sleep with that a**hole. She’s too smart and cool to fall for that guy’s s**t.’”

    10. In a Season 1 episode, Will Tippin (Bradley Cooper) snoops around the San Pedro docks and finds a freighter named “Alba Varden.” Audiences have seen this ship before — it’s featured in the final showdown from “Lethal Weapon 2.” (We’d watch the sh** out of that crossover.)

    11. J.J. Abrams was not a fan of how the Season 4 premiere, “APO,” originally turned out. So he re-shot the entire episode in five days.

    12. The only two stars to appear in every episode of the series are Garner and Victor Garber, who played Syd’s dad, Jack. The evil Sloane (Ron Rifkin) only missed two episodes out of the series’ 105.

    13. Where did the idea come from to give Syd a sister, Nadia (Mía Maestro)? “It was probably, J.J,” Applebaum said. “Somebody said: ‘What if Sydney had a sister?’ Suddenly, everyone’s like ‘f**k yeah!’ Then J.J. was going through a script, and in his rewrite of it, as this guy is dying, [Abrams] added this line in. The person dying said, ‘Find the passenger.’” After initial shock at the line, the writers eventually found a way to tie the passenger and Nadia together.
    14. In Season 5, Rachel Nichols‘ character, Rachel Gibson, was created because Garner was pregnant and the show needed a new character to handle the show’s demanding action scenes during that time. Also, knowing it was the final season, the writers wanted to callback to Sydney’s original arc about an agent who discovers that she is working for the very bad guys she thought she was fighting.

    15. Throughout production, Garner instituted a “Crew Member of the Week” award. According to writer/showrunner Jeff Pinkner, “[Garner] even created a little crown, which went from crew member to crew member each week, and there was a ceremony.”

    16. Each of Jennifer Garner’s wigs cost around $5,000. The series (usually) required a new wig for each episode, although some wigs were re-used and re-styled throughout the show’s run.

    17. Abrams’ childhood friend, Greg Grunberg — who played the always-likable Weiss — treated himself to a wrap gift when the series ended. He bought the Ford Bronco Will drove in the series. He still owns it.

    Mark-Paul Gosselaar in The Passage
    Fox

A door closed for Mark-Paul Gosselaar when “The Passage” was canceled in May, but now another has opened.

The actor has joined ABC’s upcoming “Black-ish” spinoff, “Mixed-ish,” Deadline reports. He’ll star as Paul Johnson, the father of Rainbow, who is played by Tracee Ellis Ross in “Black-ish.” Gosselaar is stepping in to replace Anders Holm, who portrayed Paul in the pilot.

The series is a prequel to “Black-ish” that was written by Peter Saji and Kenya Barris. It follows a younger Rainbow (Arica Himmell) and her family as they move from a hippie commune to the suburbs. With Gosselaar and Tika Sumpter playing Bow’s parents, it shows the experience as a mixed-race family in the ’80s.

Gosselaar is coming off a season starring in “The Passage.” Over the years, he has had several notable TV roles, starting with his stint as Zack Morris on “Saved by the Bell” in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The actor went on to be a regular on shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Raising the Bar,” and “Franklin & Bash.”

Saji and Barris are executive producing “Mixed-ish” alongside showrunner Karin Gist, Ross, Anthony Anderson, Randall Winston, Artists First’s Brian Dobbins, and Cinema Gypsy’s Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland. The show comes from ABC Studios.

    “Mixed-ish” will premiere this fall.
