Moviefone: To begin with, Aaron, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and why did you want to be a part of this project?

Aaron Paul: Well, really because of Eiza, I am obsessed with her. I’ve been dear friends with her for many years. We got sent this script at the same time, and before I read it, I hit her up. I said, “Have you read this? How is it?” I was just hoping that it was incredible because it was a dream of mine to be able to tackle something with her. So, we both read it at the same time. It was just such a fun ride. We both sat down with Fly Lo, our incredible director, and we just had each other’s backs from the beginning. To be able to witness Eiza and how she tackles projects was really inspiring. She is just such a boss. You know what I mean? She cares for every single moment of the movie. Her preparation is just unbelievable. The number of notes that she has is amazing. She cares deeply. It was thrilling.

MF: Eiza, what was your experience working with Aaron on this project?

Eiza González: I love him. I’m so grateful to be on this journey with him. I really am. I can’t expand enough on how lucky I am to have him in this film and as a friend.

MF: Eiza, can you talk about your approach to playing Riya, and because she suffers from memory loss, is that freeing to perform as an actor or more complex?

EG: I think it’s both. I think it’s a combination of those things. It is my biggest fear. I think that who I am is an amalgamation of my memories, right? We all are, and my identity, my growth, comes from my memories. My expansion as a human being, as an artist, it all stems from memories. There’s nothing that scares me more than losing all that. There’s a beautiful juxtaposition of meeting a character the way that we meet Riya, which is this covered in blood, obviously lethal human being, while simultaneously being incredibly soft and vulnerable. I find it challenging, especially in this genre, being able to find female characters that feel so flushed out in such a simplistic way, and without having to explain themselves. But also, it’s two underlying currents happening simultaneously, and that is a dream as an actress. We just struggle to find characters like that, that are not necessarily tied to incredibly grounded roles. I love that. I felt like a little kid, like a child, doing things for the first time. I didn’t want to forget that, while I was sort of in the journey of looking for answers, I still wanted Riya to feel like a raw soul, lost and confused, because that’s where you connect with her. It was challenging. It’s a challenging movie, and at plain sight, it doesn’t look like it, but it has so many layers and so many undercurrents, that the director and the actors must be really in sync to be able to fill in the blanks and make sure that every little place has a moment that the audience can hold on to. Because you’re asking for audiences to sit for an hour and a half with a movie that only is in one space with two characters. That’s challenging. That’s a hard thing to achieve.

MF: Eiza, I was really impressed with Flying Lotus’ work as both a director and composer on ‘Ash’. What was it like to work with him and watch him execute his unique vision for this project?

EG: Oh, it was a dream. Aaron has worked with some of the best directors in the industry, and I’ve been very lucky to work with some of the best who direct. You can tell from the get-go when someone knows and when they don’t know. He was fearless, and sometimes that comes in different ways. You don’t have to come in with overwhelming overconfidence. It doesn’t mean that you must walk in with confidence, it just means you must have passion about something and a very clear passion. He just was so excited, but with really grounded ideas, and with a very clear point of view. He had built a team around it that really envisioned that. Once you’re with someone like that, you’re on the other side. You must drop into it and bring your knowledge. He is a new director, and Aaron has a lot of experience, and I’ve had a fair share amount of experience. He had an attitude of, “I want to learn.” Sometimes you have resistance both ways as an actor, because you have a very clear idea. I can imagine, as a director, you have an idea, but he was always open. He’d be like, “Oh, okay, let’s do it this way and then let’s try it your way.” Then some of the times it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. But it’s collaboration. That’s just a dream come true.

MF: Finally, Aaron, what was your experience like working with Flying Lotus on this film?

AP: It really is a dream, and you can see every frame of the film was just so well thought out and just the glow of the set every day. Every day everybody was talking about, “My God, it’s just so amazing to be here.” Because you don’t see anything like that. It has such a new look, you know? It’s a brave swing, and it’s just such a fun, crazy, artsy film to be part of.

What is the plot of ‘Ash’?

On a distant planet, an astronaut wakes up to find the entire crew of her space station has been killed. Riya (Eiza González) has no memory of herself or of the situation in which she finds herself, jogged by only quick, nightmarish flashes of her partners and their mission. Feeling paranoid, she must decide if she can trust the man (Aaron Paul), whom she supposedly knows, sent to rescue her after he received a distress signal from her location.

  • Nic Pizzolatto Re-Writing Marvel’s ‘Blade’

    Marvel Studios' 'Blade.'
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade.’

On the big screen, we’ll be expecting to see ‘Blade‘ deal with the threat of vampires. But to get there, at least as part of the MCU, the character has had to deal with something far trickier ––development issues.

Despite all the excitement over the announcement that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali would play the character during Marvel’s 2019 Comic-Con panel, the progress has been slow.

Mogul Mowgli’ director Bassam Tariq was hired to make the movie, only to depart over scheduling issues –– and given a shift in writers to Michael Starrbury, also seemed to indicate problems with the script.

White Boy Rick’s Yann Demage came aboard in November last year, but writing-wise, there is, according to The Hollywood Reporter, another change in the cards on the script front. ‘True Detective’ creator Nic Pizzolatto has been working on a draft based on Starrbury’s for a few weeks now.

He’s writing as quickly as possible, as the movie is scheduled to shoot at the end of this month in Atlanta.

    ‘True Detective’ reunion

Pizzolatto’s presence does indeed mark a ‘True Detective’ reunion, since Ali starred as Detective Wayne Hays in the third season of the anthology show (a fourth, starring Jodie Foster is on the way this year, but no longer involves Pizzolatto as showrunner.)

Where does Blade fit into the comics?

Originally crafted by Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman as a human who was immune to vampire bites, he was later changed to Eric Cross Brooks, whose mother is murdered by the bloodsucker Deacon Frost as she gives birth. The attack passes on vampire enzymes to her child, who becomes a Dhampir – a mix of both human and vampire.

Gifted with speed, strength, and the ability to walk in the daylight (hence his other name, the Daywalker), his mission is to hunt down and destroy vampires. In his time, he’s crossed paths with many notable Marvel characters in the comics, including Spider-Man and the Avengers. He’s also battled living vampire Morbius, who had his own movie out earlier this year, starring Jared Leto.

Yet Blade is probably most famous for the trilogy of movies released by New Line in 1998, 2002 and 2004, starring Wesley Snipes as the gruff, sword-swinging character.

The MCU version’s story is still so far, a mystery: whether it’ll deal with Blade’s origins is unknown for now, but we can expect plenty of vampire-killing action.

  • ‘Westworld’ Cancelled After Four Seasons

‘Westworld’, which for four seasons has been delighting (and more often confounding) viewers with its complex, twisty storytelling and changing characters since it debuted in 2016, has been cancelled at HBO.

Based on the 1973 film by Michael Crichton (who would go on to employ a similar idea of attractions causing trouble in his novel ‘Jurassic Park‘), ‘Westworld’ –– initially, at least –– told the story of a sprawling Western-themed park where humans could interact with complicated artificial people. And by interact, it usually meant either sleep with or kill.

As the show went on, the canvas expanded to include different zones within the park with their own themes and the futuristic world outside of it, as the “hosts” –– the park’s creations –– broke out of their programming (and their restrictions) and began to plot a takeover of the human sphere.

The show was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with J.J. Abrams among its executive producers via his Bad Robot company. The cast included Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan and James Marsden.

An initial success –– its premiere drew the channel’s highest viewership since the debut of “True Detective” in 2014, it was initially buzzy, but its appeal began to wane slightly in later years, most notably after a big break in episodes due to the pandemic.

Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford in HBO's 'Westworld.'
Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford in HBO’s ‘Westworld.’

Though HBO offered no official reason for the cancellation, there is already talk that it’s a combination of declining ratings (even without need of advertising revenue), with a precipitous drop between Seasons 3 and 4, and the hefty price tag for the show.

An effects heavy head-scratcher, it featured expansive visuals of futuristic cities, a big cast and lots of artificial beings to bring to life.

It’s no secret that HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has been on a cost-cutting run of late, and while it still has big productions upcoming (such as ‘The Last of Us’), it has clearly decided that ‘Westworld’ was no longer worth producing.

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” HBO said in a statement. “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

“Making ‘Westworld’ has been one of the highlights of our careers,” Nolan and Joy have remarked. “We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness –– both human and beyond –– in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so.”

No shade there, then. Nolan and Joy, meanwhile are still at work on visions of the future –– they have a deal at Amazon, where they’re currently producing ‘The Peripheral’ and developing other projects.

  • Karen Gillan Talks ‘Dual’

    Karen Gillan
Karen Gillan in director Riley Stearns’ ‘Dual’ from RLJE Films.

Opening in theaters on April 15th is the new sci-fi comedy ‘Dual,’ from writer/director Riley Stearns (‘The Art of Self-Defense’).

The movie stars Karen Gillan (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) as Sarah, a woman who is recently given a terminal diagnosis from her doctor. So her family won’t feel the pain of her death, she has herself cloned and begins to teach her new self how to be her.

Trouble begins when Sarah goes into remission and is no longer dying. Now, by law, because they cannot both be the same person permanently, Sarah has one year to train before she must fight her double to the death on national TV.

In addition to Gillan, the cast also includes Aaron Paul (‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie’), Beulah Koale (‘Hawaii Five-0’), and Theo James (‘Underworld: Awakening’).

Scottish actress Karen Gillan first gained attention for playing Amy Pond on ‘Doctor Who’ and has since gone on to appear in such popular movies as ‘The Big Short,’ ‘The Circle,’ ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,’ ‘Jumanji: The Next Level,’ ‘Gunpowder Milkshake,’ and ‘The Bubble.’

But she’s probably best known for playing Nebula in the MCU movies ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and the upcoming ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Karen Gillian about her work on ‘Dual.’ The talented actress discussed her new film, director Riley Stearns’ unique vision, how the Marvel movies prepared her to play two characters at once, working with Aaron Paul, if she would ever clone herself, and working with Taika Waititi on the upcoming ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’

    CZysU3lD

You can read our full interview with Karen Gillian about ‘Dual’ below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Gillan, Beulah Koale, and writer/director Riley Stearns.

Moviefone: To begin with, how did you get involved with this project and what was your first reaction when you read the screenplay?

Karen Gillan: I think somebody from the production company that was making it sent me the script and said, “You have to be in this. This is one of the best things I’ve read in ages.” So, I was definitely primed for it to be really good and then I read it and I was like, “I totally agree.”

It’s just really unique and it’s in Riley Stearns’ voice. Like it could not have been written by anybody else. Then I went and explored all of his other films and realized that I had to be involved in this. He’s a filmmaker that I really respect who has his own sense of identity and I want to be a part of that.

MF: What was it like working with writer/director Riley Stearns and watching him execute his unique vision for this project?

KG: It was really cool to just watch someone know exactly what they want. That’s a trait that you really need in a good director, somebody who can really take the reins and be like, “This is how it’s going to be.” Then everybody else can kind of get in line with that overall vision. He has that in bucket loads.

He is just somebody who knows how he wants everything, how he wants the hair, how he wants the makeup, how he wants the shot, the acting, everything. That was just really nice to be guided like that and also take on the challenge of fitting into a certain established style that he already has as a filmmaker.

Riley Stearns on the set of 'Dual'
Director Riley Stearns on the set of ‘Dual’ from RLJE Films.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to playing these two separate characters and what was it like acting opposite yourself?

KG: It’s really weird acting opposite yourself and I’ve done it now four times, which sounds ridiculous, but I’m always in sci-fi or time travel things, so I’ve met myself a few times along the way. So, I kind of already was in the zone before this film, which is funny, but it’s tricky because you’ve got to obviously film both sides of the scene.

I had an amazing actress reading me my other lines so I could react off of someone. I’m watching it, thinking, “Okay. I’m going to steal what you did. I’m going to steal that for when I do my coverage and I’m probably going to do it different to the way you did that line.” So, I’m trying to imagine how I would do it in the future and then react off of that. So, it’s a lot of multitasking going on. I was like, “Wow. actually, I know how to do this already. Thank you, Avengers.”

MF: If you were dying, and it was possible to be cloned, would you make the same choice that Sarah did?

KG: We were sort of asking each other that question along the way. I think I was saying yes initially and then it dawned on me how creepy that is. Someone told me that people are having clones made of their pets. I can’t imagine cloning my dog. Apparently the personalities are different. So, I don’t know what I would do. I’m going to probably say I wouldn’t.

It’s really interesting how somebody can have the same genetic makeup as you and yet turn out differently for some reason that we can’t quite grasp. That was really interesting for me to play as an actress. It’s two people who are sort of the same. Like they have the same toolkits, but they’re using them differently.

My character starts off very kind of like low on confidence and self-worth, but the clone comes out extremely confident because she hasn’t been beaten down by life yet. So, it’s the same toolkit, but two different reactions to life.

Sarah obviously starts off very low in self-worth. Then through having to dual her clone in a dual to the death, she starts to work on herself and actually she starts to gain confidence, appreciate her life and she wants to fight for it more and more. The clone actually goes the opposite way and she starts to become more beaten down. So, they switch places at a certain point, which is really fun to play with.

    Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul
(L to R) Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul in director Riley Stearns’ ‘Dual’ from RLJE Films.

MF: The actual dual in the movie takes place during a televised event, was that a commentary on reality TV?

KG: I mean, I feel like as humans we’ve been doing that for a really long time. Look at the gladiator times. It’s like we have a morbid fascination with watching people tear each other apart. I don’t know where that comes from. Now we’re just seeing it on every reality television show. It’s like if there’s not an argument, it’s not a good episode.

MF: What was your experience like working with Aaron Paul?

KG: Working with Aaron was incredible. He is such an amazing actor and one of the most generous people. Because he’s such a generous person, it makes him a really generous actor. He’s working to make you a better actor and I always love it when I have that type of relationship with other actors where we’re working for each other rather than for ourselves. He is exactly like that. He is so funny in the movie. He’s a wonderful person.

MF: Generally, what are you looking for from a scene partner?

KG: I think in a dream world we’re working for each other. So, if I can work really hard when the coverage is on the other person, if I can work really hard to provoke reactions in that person and help them to where they need to be and then I receive that from them, I feel like it just results in better acting because it’s reacting rather than acting. It makes each other’s job easier, yet you are working harder when you’re not off camera. But it’s like really a nice way to work and a generous way to work.

Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan dancing
(L to R) Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan in director Riley Stearns’ ‘Dual’ from RLJE Films.

MF: Finally, I’m sure you can’t talk much about the current Marvel projects that you are working on, but what was it like collaborating with director Taika Waititi on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder?’

KG: It’s exactly like you’d imagine. He’s a whirlwind of brilliant, chaotic, creativity. It’s like a ride or something. You go in and he’s just kind of running around and he’s playing one of the characters in it and then he’s like, “Do this. Say this.” You kind of just need to cast your fate to the wind and go with it and he’s going to shout lines at you. You don’t know what they’re going to be, but there’s something so exhilarating about that. So, I had a really, really good time working with him because you just have to jump in at the deep end almost.

‘Breaking Bad’ Movie ‘El Camino’ Gets First Teaser, Release Date

    AMC

The “Breaking Bad” sequel movie will be here sooner than anyone thought.

Netflix has dropped the first teaser for “El Camino” and announced the film’s release date: October 11. The film is also expected to be broadcast on AMC at a later date.

“El Camino” brings back star Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman and follows up on his fate after the AMC series finale. The official description of the movie says, “In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.”

“Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan wrote and directed the movie.

The teaser features Skinny Pete (Charles Baker, reprising the role) telling law enforcement that he has no clue where Jesse is.

In the series finale, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) sacrificed himself to rescue his former meth-cooking partner Jesse from an neo-Nazi gang. Jesse fled, as Walt lay dying, in a stolen Chevrolet El Camino.

It’s unknown if Cranston or any other “Breaking Bad” alums will make an appearance in the film, via flashback or in the present time.

Fans were surprised recently when Bob Odenkirk, who stars in the “Breaking Bad” prequel series “Better Call Saul, revealed that the movie had already wrapped filming.

But in an interview with The New York Times, Paul confessed that filming had taken place even before the movie’s existence had been uncovered by the media. “The movie had already happened and was in the can. It was done,” he said.

When anyone asked him what he was doing during that time, the actor noted, “I just said I was doing this small little indie out in New Mexico and that was it. No one second-guessed it.”

Paul added, “I definitely had people asking, ‘Are you doing ‘Better Call Saul’?’ And I’d go, ‘Hey, man, I wish I was. But they’re on hiatus right now.’”

Nope. Today the duo revealed that the thing that was “coming soon” is Dos Hombres, a new agave-based alcohol.

It’s “a collaboration so smooth you can taste it,” both Paul and Cranston tweeted yesterday. Today, they shared more info about how they went into the Mezcal business. (And got us to write about it. Oy.)

Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, you big teases!

The actors shared another photo to social media that suggests the “Breaking Bad” movie may be coming out even sooner than we expected. Which, frankly, can’t be soon enough.

Both tweeted the same photo of two donkeys with the word “Soon” on June 25.

    Aaron Paul/Twitter

Today, they both shared a new photo of the two of them wading through a muddy creek with Cranston wearing Walter White’s familiar porkpie hat. The caption: “Even sooner.”

The film, according to Slashfilm, will “track the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom,” that is, follow Paul’s character, Jesse Pinkman,  after the 2013 series finale.

Since Walter died in the finale, it’s not clear how he can come back for a post-series role. Unless he didn’t real die. Or he’s a ghost or a figment of Jesse’s imagination.

Cranston has previously stated that Walter White is most definitely dead, so you tell us. Evil twin? Somehow immortal?

The project has been shooting under the code name “Greenbriar” in New Mexico.

Deadline reported in February that the film will air on both Netflix and AMC.

‘Westworld’ Season 3 Adds Lena Waithe

    Warner Bros.

There’s still no premiere date for the upcoming third season of hit HBO sci-fi series “Westworld,” but the new additions to the show’s cast suggest that it will be well worth the wait.

Entertainment Weekly reports that groundbreaking writer-actress Lena Waithe has joined the buzzy drama. But in keeping with the show’s penchant for secrecy, nothing is known about her role just yet.

Waithe has been an in-demand talent in recent years, following her history-making 2017 Emmy win for Best Comedy Writing for “Master of None.” She became the first African-American woman to take home that statuette.

Since then, she created the Showtime drama “The Chi,” serves as a writer on BET series “Boomerang,” guest-starred on an episode of “This Is Us,” recurred on Netflix series “Dear White People,” and had a role in last year’s big-budget flick “Ready Player One.” Phew.

In addition to Waithe, fellow Emmy winner Aaron Paul will also make his “Westworld” debut in season three. Like Waithe, no details have been revealed about his character, though he’s expected to be a series regular.

We still don’t know when “Westworld” is expected to return to the airwaves, though EW reports that fans will likely see new episodes sometime in 2020. Stay tuned.

A few precious details are finally emerging about Vince Gilligan’s upcoming “Breaking Bad” movie.

The two-hour film, which was announced last November, will be a sequel starring Emmy winner Aaron Paul. It will follow the escape of a kidnapped man — Paul’s character, Jesse Pinkman — and his quest for freedom.

Gilligan is writing the script and sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he will also direct.

Deadline reports that the movie will stream first on Netflix, then air on AMC — a reversal from the original series. Netflix is often credited for the show’s rise in popularity and ratings in later seasons. Even Gilligan himself acknowledged that when accepting the show’s first Emmy for Best Drama.

“I think Netflix kept us on the air,” he said at the time. “Not only are we standing up here, I don’t think our show would have even lasted beyond Season 2 .… It’s a new era in television, and we’ve been very fortunate to reap the benefits.”

Paul’s co-star Bryan Cranston is not likely to reprise his role as Walter White in the movie, though if Gilligan asked him to  make a cameo, he said, “I would, absolutely.”

“I don’t know if there’s an appearance — flashbacks, flash forwards — but I’m excited about it because it’s ‘Breaking Bad’ and it was the greatest professional period of my life and I can’t wait to see all those people again, even if I just come by to visit,” Cranston said.

“Breaking Bad” ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013 and told the story of Walter White, a chemistry teacher who turns to making meth after a cancer diagnosis and enlists the help of former student Jesse.

The series is regarded as one of the best in television history and earned numerous awards, including 16 Emmys (three of which for Paul as Best Supporting Actor). The show also generated a spinoff, the highly acclaimed “Better Call Saul,” which will return for a fifth season later this year.
