Rob Reiner, the American filmmaker whose humane wit and classical storytelling helped define modern Hollywood comedy and drama, was found dead on Sunday at the age of 78. The cause has not yet been officially revealed.

Among Reiner’s most enduring credits are ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Stand by Me,’ ‘The Princess Bride,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally…,’ ‘Misery,’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ — a body of work remarkable not only for its success, but for its range.

Born March 6, 1947, in New York City, Reiner was raised inside the machinery of American entertainment. The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner, he grew up absorbing the rhythms of humor, performance, and timing almost by osmosis.

He first became a household name as an actor, playing the opinionated, self-assured Mike “Meathead” Stivic on ‘All in the Family.’ The role made him a cultural lightning rod in the 1970s — but behind the scenes, Reiner was already preparing for a different kind of authorship.

Reiner’s directorial debut, ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ announced a filmmaker with a rare gift for satire — one sharp enough to skewer ego and absurdity without cruelty. What followed was one of the most astonishing runs in modern American cinema.

With ‘Stand by Me,’ he captured childhood with aching tenderness. ‘The Princess Bride’ became a timeless fairy tale, balancing irony and sincerity with effortless grace. ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ redefined the romantic comedy, pairing adult intelligence with emotional vulnerability.

Reiner refused to be boxed into a single genre. He pivoted to psychological horror with Misery, courtroom drama with ‘A Few Good Men,’ and political movies like ‘The American President,’ each time bringing a classical sense of structure and character-driven storytelling.

Reiner also continued to act through his directing career, showing up in movies such as ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ and a wide variety of TV series including ‘The Bear,’ ‘30 Rock’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’

Beyond filmmaking, Reiner has remained an outspoken civic presence, unafraid to align his art with his convictions. His work often grapples with power, responsibility, and the cost of silence — themes that echo his own engagement with social and political discourse.

He has also been a tireless advocate for creative collaboration, frequently crediting writers, actors, and crew as equal architects of his films’ success. In an industry increasingly dominated by spectacle, Reiner’s reverence for story has only grown more pronounced.

Rob Reiner’s legacy is not defined by a single masterpiece but by an extraordinary consistency of craft. Few directors have moved so fluidly between comedy, romance, horror, and drama — fewer still have done so while leaving behind films that feel deeply personal and universally beloved.

Reiner was found dead at home alongside his wife, Michele. The couple is survived by their children, Jake, Nick and Romy.

    • Will Forte is the latest addition to Tina Fey’s ‘The Four Seasons’.
    • The new show adapts the 1981 Alan Alda comedy movie.
    • Steve Carell and Colman Domingo are also in the cast.

Having just appeared on a Netflix series (mystery comedy thriller ‘Bodkin’ about podcasters digging into a suspicious death), ‘Saturday Night Live’ veteran Will Forte is sticking with the streaming service for an upcoming project.

He’s the latest addition to former ‘SNL’ castmate Tina Fey’s latest comedy series, ‘The Four Seasons’ which will be based on a 1980s movie.

What was the story of ‘The Four Seasons’?

Written and directed by Alan Alda (who starred alongside Carol Burnett), the 1981 comedy also starred Rita Moreno, Sandy Dennis, and Len Cariou. It followed three married couples who take vacations together each season, but things are thrown for a loop when one of the husbands leaves his wife and begins bringing a younger woman with him.

Fey will star in the show alongside Forte (who also had a recurring role in her NBC show ’30 Rock’, Steve Carell (who co-starred with Fey in comedy thriller ‘Date Night’), ‘Rustin’s Colman Domingo, ‘Reno 911!’s Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Erika Henningsen, who has her own Fey connection, having appeared in ‘Girls5Eva’, which she produces.

Who is making ‘The Four Seasons’?

Fey wrote the series alongside ‘Never Have I Ever’s Lang Fisher (who also wrote episodes of ’30 Rock’) and fellow ‘Rock’ veteran Tracey Wigfield.

While it might have expected to end up at somewhere like Peacock (given that it’ll be produced by Universal Television), the project became the subject of a bidding war that Netflix won. The company is also not that much of a surprise, since it also carried Fey’s ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ when NBC turned it down and rescued ‘Girls5Eva’ from cancellation at Peacock for its third season, which launched recently.

And because he made the movie, Alda gets an executive producer credit alongside Marissa Bregman, daughter of the film’s producer, Martin Bregman.

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series, and the cameras should be rolling later this year.

Where else is Will Forte showing up?

Forte is the voice of Otis in yet another Netflix project, ‘Thelma The Unicorn,’ and also has a vocal role in upcoming Pixar Disney+ series ‘Win or Lose’ and Prime Video’s ‘Sausage Party: Foodtopia’.

When will ‘The Four Seasons’ be on screens?

Netflix has yet to confirm a launch date for the series, but we could conceivably see it land next year.

  • Tina Fey Pitched a Liz Lemon and Leslie Knope Spinoff, and We Need it to Happen

Tina Fey may have just inadvertently pitched the greatest television show ever, merging two beloved NBC comedies starring badass female characters. Now if only someone could convince her to actually make it a reality.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the Tonys red carpet on Sunday night, where Fey was supporting her nominated adaptation of “Mean Girls,” she was asked about those never-ending rumors of a “30 Rock” reboot. Though the writer-actress admitted earlier this year that she had been mulling the idea, she also made it clear that such a revival was not currently in the works.

When the subject was broached again on Sunday, Fey said “we’re nowhere” with regards to news of a “30 Rock” reboot. But instead, she offered fans an even better suggestion.

“Amy’s willing to do a ‘Parks & Rec’ reboot,” Fey told ET of her longtime pal and frequent costar, Amy Poehler. “Maybe we should just do a Liz Lemon-Leslie Knope spinoff.”

Excuse us while we high five a million angels and eat some celebratory waffles.

Poehler sparked “Parks and Recreation” reboot rumors last month when she said she would definitely be on board for a revival sometime down the road. And seeing Leslie and Fey’s “30 Rock” heroine team up on their own show is quite possibly the best bit of fan fiction wish fulfillment we could ever hope for.

Obviously, Fey was just joking around, but if anyone can make this happen, and make it believable and hilarious and wonderful, it’s our favorite celebrity BFFs. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and light some Li’l Sebastian prayer candles.

  • Tina Fey Laments Her Daughters’ Hilarious Reactions to Her Work on ‘Late Night’

Tina Fey‘s toughest critics might just be her daughters.

The comedian chatted with “Late Night” the evening after Meyers’s second son was born (in his apartment’s lobby, no less), and she did her best to prepare him for some of the trials of parenthood he hasn’t yet faced. Specifically, she detailed what it’s like sharing your work with them as they get older. For Fey, this has led to some undesirable but hilarious outcomes.

The actress and her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, have two daughters, Alice and Penelope, who are 12 and 6, respectively. With Alice proving to be a comedy lover, Fey hoped that she could get her eldest into the NBC sitcom she created and starred in, “30 Rock.” Unfortunately, when Alice gave it a go, she came back with the criticism that it is “too weird.” To add insult to injury, she loved “Parks and Recreation,” which stars Fey’s close friend Amy Poehler.

Fey hasn’t tried to push “30 Rock” on Penelope yet, but her youngest did get to sit in on rehearsals while the “Mean Girls” musical was being made. Unfortunately, she didn’t quite understand the spirit of the story. Instead of learning how to not be like the Plastics, Fey says, Penelope started playing “Mean Girls” at school and wanting to yell at people as Regina.

Watch Fey recount the entertaining stories below.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

  • Whew! ’30 Rock’ Will Stream on Hulu Along With ‘Parenthood’

“30 Rock” wants to go to there — “there” being Hulu.

Fans were devastated that the Emmy-winning comedy is leaving Netflix at the end of September. But don’t worry — you’ll be able to binge rewatch “30 Rock” on Hulu!

As part of a deal with NBC Universal, Hulu will begin streaming “30 Rock” and beloved family drama “Parenthood.” The former will be available Oct. 1, while the latter while debut on the streaming service in early 2018.

Hulu will also premiere Paul Reiser’s new period comedy “There’s Johnny,” set behind the scenes of “The Tonight Show.” The show was originally set to stream on NBC’s now-dead service Seeso.

NBC and Hulu signed a similar deal recently for the entire archive of “Will & Grace,” which has been revived for another season (and premieres Thursday).

These deals aren’t a big surprise, since NBC Universal owns 30 percent of Hulu.
