Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kiefer Sutherland about his work on ‘Tinsel Town’, his first reaction to the screenplay, making his first Christmas movie, his character and his relationship to his daughter, the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, and working with the cast and director Chris Foggin, as well as an update on the future of ‘24’ and what it was like acting opposite Al Pacino in the upcoming ‘Father Joe’.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and is this the first Christmas movie you’ve ever made?

Kiefer Sutherland: It is the first Christmas movie that I’ve ever been in, and I was really moved by the script. Obviously, this is not something that I normally do, a comedy that is as broad as this. I thought it was incredibly funny. I think the British make these kinds of movies, kind of a warmhearted stories, they do them well. Chris Foggin is a fantastic director, but I loved the script. I found it very funny, and I just thought it was a nice story about someone who had lost their way as a human being, and the worst their life got, the better human being they became. I think that’s a kind of a wonderful fable. I found that the stuff between him and his daughter to be really moving as well. So, it had a lot of elements, whether it was the comedy and a touching drama at the same time, and it kind of came together. Piers Ashwood, who wrote the screenplay, I think just did a masterful job. So, I thought it was very funny right away and I was excited to be a part of it.

MF: Your character, Bradley Mack, is a difficult Hollywood actor. Did you draw influence from any difficult actors that you have worked with along the way?

KS: Well, I think first off, I had to take a very serious look at myself, right? I think over 43 years, I think there’s probably been moments where I have maybe been difficult. Certainly, in my younger years, I know that when you’re trying to find your way, you can make some mistakes and things like that. So, I drew upon those memories. Then, yes, I’ve seen some other actors be kind of demanding and maybe more demanding than their talent deserved, and Bradley Mack is kind of a perfect composite of that. What I really liked again about the screenplay is that he’s not a bad person. He’s just gone down a bad path, and that we all can find our way back. That’s really what the film is about. It’s just told in a very funny way.

MF: Bradley Mack is specifically an action star; did you feel like that gave you a chance to spoof your iconic ‘24’ persona in a way?

KS: I think a little bit, yeah, and it was fun. You know, I think it was fun. It’s very funny that people that kind of do an action movie here and there can sometimes start to think that they’re very skilled, either as a fighter or with weapons and things like that. The truth is you’re not. You’re taught just enough to fake it. So, I’ve always found that very funny. So, to be able to play that in a character for a film was a lot of fun.

MF: Can you talk about Bradley’s estranged relationship with his daughter and this experience makes him a better father?

KS: Well, again, he was confronted with a reality that he was, in fact, a bad father. Then, he is just forced to spend some time with his daughter because of these certain circumstances and he falls in love with her. My daughter was played by Matilda Firth, who is an extraordinary, gifted young actor. In the context of our movie, she was the adult in the relationship. That was a lot of fun and she guided her father back to being a better human being. I find that a very touching aspect of the film.

MF: How familiar were you with the UK’s holiday tradition of pantomime, called Panto? Did you do any research into the tradition?

KS: I did, absolutely. I certainly was not as familiar before the film I am now. I had never really seen a live pantomime, I’ve seen film versions here and there of a pantomime, but I’ve never been to one. So, when we got to Leeds, England, I was very excited because they had a pantomime on for that season, and unfortunately, it had closed two days before, so I wasn’t able to see it. But obviously, I got a great deal of help from everybody there, and it is a significant tradition in the UK and people take it very seriously. We talk about it in the context of the film, but it financially supports a lot of those theaters through the rest of the year. So, I think it’s very cool and it was fun to make a movie about it.

MF: Can you talk about working with Rebel Wilson, Alice Eve and legendary actor Sir Derek Jacobi, as well as the rest of the cast?

KS: Alice was fantastic. I only worked for her for a few days, but her timing is extraordinary, and she’s so incredibly funny as my divorced wife and James (Lance) did a great job as well, who played her new husband. Derek Jacobi is one of the great actors of all time, Sir Derek Jacobi, and to be able to have an opportunity to work with him was fantastic. Maria Friedman, Meera Syal, Danny Dyer, just all those fantastic actors, all just had such beautiful timing, and all kind of added personal moments to the movie. So, it was an absolute thrill to work with everybody.

(L to R) Kiefer Sutherland and Rebel Wilson in ‘Tinsel Town’. Photo: Brainstorm Media.

MF: What was it like collaborating with director Chris Foggin on this film and what are you looking for from a director on set?

KS: For me, I’m looking for someone to be in charge. You know, the director is the one person who’s going to travel from the pre-production stage of a movie to the production stage and filming of the movie, the post-production stage where they’re editing and finalizing the music and all the special effects. So that’s the person that has the vision that’s going to carry its way through the entire film. I’m looking for someone to lead that, and that’s what the director is supposed to do. You know, having done this for quite some time, if you’re not working towards a shared vision, you’re going to end up on the cutting room floor. So, Chris is someone that I asked for guidance from, and at the end of the day, especially if you’re doing a comedy, you finish a scene and look over and if he’s laughing, we did something right, and if he’s not, we better figure this out. So, he was a fantastic director and I think just did a beautiful job with the film.

MF: Earlier this year, you talked about speaking to the ‘24’ creators about some ideas to bring back the show in some way and that there were steps being taken to move forward. Are there any updates that you can give us on that?

KS: You’d have to ask Howard Gordon how he was approached, but he did come up with what I thought was a really good idea. So, he wrote a piece, and I really enjoyed it. That’s kind of where we’re at and we’ll see if it gets made. But, you know, at this stage, I thought it was a really good idea, and that’s where we’re kind of at.

MF: Is Jack Bauer still locked up in a Russian prison?

KS: Yeah. So, he’s been there for a while, and he’s not happy about it.

MF: Finally, I know that you are shooting the upcoming movie ‘Father Joe’ right now. What has it been like working with the legendary Al Pacino on that project?

KS: Working with Al Pacino, you know, they always say, be careful about meeting your idols because they might let you down. That’s the opposite experience that I had with Al Pacino. Al Pacino was everything I’d hoped he’d be. He’s an extraordinarily powerful actor, but he’s a kind human being. So, I just really enjoyed it. I hope when I’m his age that I’m still working as well.

“[Latest showrunner and executive producer] Howard Gordon has come up with an idea that I like. Before, the material had not been written, so I would have to say, ‘I’m not the one that’s in the way.’ But something has been written. I think it’s really good. I think it’s really strong.”

Does this mean Jack will be breaking out of Russian prison for more adventures? Only time will tell!

    What’s the story of ‘24’?

The original series, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran for Fox television, originally ran for nine seasons between 2001 and 2014, and spawned a television film called ‘Redemption’ in 2008.

Sutherland starred as Jack Bauer, an agent from the U.S. government’s fictitious Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU). His usual missions involved running around Los Angeles and beyond thwarting terrorist threats such as a nuclear explosion. Each season depicted 24 hours in real time (though you thankfully didn’t see him go to the toilet).

Bauer was famous for his slightly violent attitude to law enforcement, and he wasn’t above torturing suspects to get the information he needed.

And other characters, such as his daughter Kim (played by Elisha Cuthbert) sometimes found themselves in more ridiculous situations (just say the word “cougar” to any fan and they’ll know what you mean).

In 2017, a spin-off called ‘24: Legacy’ aired for one season, starring Corey Hawkins.

What else did Sutherland have to say about a potential return to ‘24’?

Kiefer Sutherland in season 1 of '24'.

Sutherland had more to say about our chances of more Jack on screens:

“ ‘24’ was originally with Fox. Now it’s owned by Disney because of what Fox has sold off, and so it has to go through different channels before it’s either approved or disapproved. Like everybody else, it’s something I would really like to do. I would like to close that story. It was left kind of wide open. So, fingers crossed. There’s a chance. We’ve taken some considerable steps forward.”

You might recall that last year, there was chatter about a movie in development at Disney, so chances are this is what Sutherland means.

When would more ‘24’ be on screens?

As Kiefer himself admits, it’s currently up to the studio to want to make more. But given Disney’s love for IP it can utilize, it’s not impossible to think Jack might be unleashed upon the world once more.

    • A ‘24’ is in the works.
    • The movie adapts the action thriller series.
    • Star Kiefer Sutherland has yet to be confirmed as returning.

It’s been a few years since we saw Kiefer Sutherland running around and barking orders into a phone on ‘24‘, while a relentless digital clock ticked down and danger lurked off every exit of Los Angeles’ freeways.

Now, though, Brian Grazer –– whose Imagine Entertainment company produced the show –– has told CNBC show ‘Squawk Box’ that he and 20th Century Studios are in the early stages of development on a movie based on the show.

What has Kiefer Sutherland previously said about a new take on ‘24’?

Sutherland has commented in the past that he’d be up to return, though perhaps not as the star this time, especially given the physical toll involved in bringing Bauer to screens.

Here’s what he said to Entertainment Weekly last year:

“Howard [Gordon] and I talk all the time and invariably it comes up. The idea of him being brought back –– I’m just spitballing –– I think that’s an interesting idea. You introduce a new cast of people in their effort to get him out, and it lives on from that point. There’s a lot of ways to go about it. I also think it’s such a great idea to take a 24-hour moment in somebody’s life that is desperate –– and that could be a fireman; that could be so many different circumstances. It boggles my mind that someone hasn’t come along and said, ‘Well, we need to do *this* with it.’ So whether it involves me or not, I just think that to do something in real time is so clever –– difficult, but clever –– that I find it kind of shocking that it hasn’t manifested itself into something else and/or bigger.”

Sutherland has yet to sign on at this point

When will the ‘24’ movie be on screens?

With the movie at such an early stage, even Disney wouldn’t set a release date just yet. And you’d probably need Jack Bauer-level skills to discover their plans.

  • ‘Rabbit Hole’ Interview: Kiefer Sutherland Talks New Series

    jaQ6fRhC

Premiering on Paramount+ March 26th is the new spy thriller series ‘Rabbit Hole,’ which was created by ‘Focus’ directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.

What is the plot of ‘Rabbit Hole?’

In ‘Rabbit Hole,’ John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland), a master of deception in the world of corporate espionage, is framed for murder by powerful forces with the ability to influence and control populations.

Who is in the cast of ‘Rabbit Hole?’

‘Rabbit Hole’ stars Kiefer Sutherland (’24,’ ‘Designated Survivor’), Charles Dance (‘The Golden Child’) as Dr. Ben Wilson, Meta Golding (‘Empire’) as Hailey Winton, Enid Graham (‘Mare of Easttown’) as Josephine “Jo” Madi, Jason Butler Harner (‘Ozark’) as Valence, Walt Klink (‘Arctic Circle’) as The Intern and Rob Yang (‘The Menu’) as Edward Homm.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Kiefer Sutherland about his work on ‘Rabbit Hole,’ the new series, his character, working with the writers, and why he wanted to do the show.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Sutherland, Charles Dance, Meta Golding, Walt Klink, Enid Graham, Rob Yang, and series creators John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about returning to the espionage thriller genre after ’24,’ and what was it that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa told you about the series to get you excited about doing it?

Kiefer Sutherland: Well, they referenced movies that I really admired and loved growing up watching as a young person. Those movies were ‘Three Days of the Condor’ with Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman in ‘Marathon Man,’ ‘The Parallax View,’ and ‘The Fugitive.’ So once they told me about that, the thriller is a genre that I love working in, and I’m a huge fan of them as writers and directors. They started describing John Weir as a character, and then the thing they touched on almost out of the gate was that this character would go from being the hunter to the hunted in a matter of moments, and that he was then spending the rest of the series running for his life and trying to prove his innocence. That was a very dynamic shift, and any time you can take someone and make them go 180 degrees in the other direction, it gives an actor a lot of room to work and makes that character very vulnerable. So just in that first discussion, I knew it was something that I really wanted to do and I was grateful that they called me first because I don’t think anybody would’ve said no. I was just thrilled to be a part of it, and when I got the script, I was certainly not let down. I thought it was fantastic and couldn’t wait to get started making it. Now I’m finally at a place where I can’t wait for people to finally see it. But we’re very proud of it.

MF: Did you receive scripts for the entire season, or are you going one script at a time while you’re building your character?

KS: We got about half the season up front and then got the other half as we went, which was a lot better than any other experience I’ve had before because television, normally you’re writing as you’re working, which makes making the show very complicated. So it was very nice actually to have half of the material in advance. Then they’re just really beautiful writers in the sense that they can deliver the plot lines and the big ideas, but they’ve also got such subtlety and nuance. One of the really nice benefits for me with this character is that he has a sense of humor, finally. So the romantic, kind of sarcastic banter between Meta (Golding), who plays opposite me is just really special. It’s also something that I don’t normally get asked to do. So it was a lot of fun for me.

MF: Finally, can you talk about John Weir’s background and how he got to the place where we find him at the beginning of this series?

KS: Well, I think he has a number of skills, but I think his understanding of the human psyche is really important. So it allows him to run scams on people that allow them to believe that the market is going in one direction, when in fact it’s not. He can manipulate technology so that the truth is what he wants the truth to be, and he uses that to his advantage to help the companies that are employing him. Very quickly in the first episode, that is turned on him and he again goes from the hunter to the hunted and is literally running for his life.

  • Elisha Cuthbert Talks ‘The Cellar’

    Elisha Cuthbert in 'The Cellar.'
Elisha Cuthbert in ‘The Cellar,’ which opens in theaters and on Shudder beginning April 15th.

Opening in theaters and on Shudder beginning April 15th is the new horror movie ‘The Cellar’ from writer/director Brendan Muldowney.

The movie stars Elisha Cuthbert (‘24’ and ‘Old School’) as Keira Woods, a woman whose teenage daughter (Abby Fitz) mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house. She soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family’s souls forever.

In addition to Cuthbert and Fitz, the movie also features Eoin Macken (‘La Brea’) as Keira’s husband Brian, and Dylan Fitzmaurice Brady as their son Steven.

Elisha Cuthbert began her career over 25 years ago as a child actor. She has since gone on to appear in several hit TV programs such as ‘Happy Endings’ and ‘The Ranch,’ as well as appearing in popular movies like ‘Old School,’ ‘Love Actually,’ ‘The Girl Next Door,’ and ‘House of Wax.’ But she is probably best known for her role as Jack Bauer’s daughter Kim, on the groundbreaking Fox series ’24.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Elisha Cuthbert about her work on ‘The Cellar.’ The talented actress discussed her new movie, her character, working with Eoin Macken, having fun on the set, and how playing a mother reminded her of working on ’24.’

You can read our full interview below with Elisha Cuthbert or watch our interviews with Cuthbert and Eoin Macken by clicking on the video player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about how you got involved with this project and what was your first reaction to the screenplay?

Elisha Cuthbert: It’s interesting because I got to check out the director Brendan’s short film called ‘The Ten Steps.’ Which this film was based off of, and then went into reading the script and thought it was such a great take on the short. Obviously, it’s a lot more in depth dealing with numerology and all of this mythical stuff. But the short was really what intrigued me and then the film I thought was great.

Then towards the end where it takes a turn, without giving a lot away, was really what got me. I thought, “Wow, this is going to be a fun ride.” I really loved it and I hoped we could do it, because it was really at the height of the pandemic when I had read it. We weren’t really sure if we were going to be able to make it, but we ended up getting it done. So that was great.

MF: What was you approach to playing this character?

EC: Brandon and I had a lot of conversations about how the film was going to be so atmospheric and I think for people to know going into this, this is not a gore-fest. There’s something a little bit more atmospheric is the world. So, when I went into it, I wanted Keira to blend in with that atmospheric vibe. So, she’s tough, but she’s subdued, very much a workhorse and is logical and gets things done.

So, I went in with that attitude. But also, there’s that thing where I felt, at this point in my career, I hadn’t really tackled playing a mother per se, not to this level. So, with children of my own now I really was drawn to the idea of the concept of going to the ends of the earth to save your children. I loved that and could relate to it. So, I brought that as well, which was always in the back of my mind.

MF: Can you also talk about the challenges of playing a mother who has lost her child?

EC: I think there’s one scene in the film that really hits on that hard. When she’s with her husband and she feels like she’s done everything wrong and feels the heavy emotional weight of the grief of that. But then, in a perfect Keira Woods vibe, it’s time to get at it and find a solution to this and find her daughter.

The great thing about it that makes it so realistic was that you watch horror films sometimes, and you’re always going, “Why are they going down into the cellar? They know it’s the wrong thing to do. Why are they going out into the woods? There’s always that torturous question of, are they going to get themselves into some sort of trouble?

But for me, I felt like this was the first time I had read it where I went, of course this mother is going to do anything and put herself in any kind of danger to save her daughter. So, for me, that was a jumping off point where everything made sense and nothing scary or crazy felt crazy enough to stop her.

    Eoin Macken in 'The Cellar.'
Eoin Macken in ‘The Cellar,’ which opens in theaters and on Shudder beginning April 15th.

MF: When Keira discovers that something supernatural is happening in their home, Brian does not believe her. Can you talk about their relationship and creating that with Eoin Macken?

EC: You know what? Eoin is so great. I mean, we had such a good time working together. I mean really Keira is on this journey on her own, because like you said, I think when she starts to even tell the police what she’s discovering, without giving anything away, everyone starts to turn their backs on her and she’s left the lone soldier really going for it and taking the lead.

So yeah, we didn’t get a ton of stuff to play, but what we did get to play with, we really did work on. Because we really wanted to convey that these two had been obviously together for a long time. They had their children very young and we kind of created this backstory for them because there’s a lot of stuff that’s not said in words and really is just moments, that brings in that atmospheric vibe. So, we really played on that, understanding each other’s back story and we had a lot of fun with that.

MF: You have some very tense scenes in this movie. Is it fun on the set while you are making a movie like this or is it also tense while you are filming?

EC: Certain scenes are way more intense than others. I think when you’re trying to keep the momentum, especially as the movie builds, right? You start in one place, but then as this film progresses, it just gets heavier and faster until it finally hits. So, there’s a lot of like, running up and down the hall to get a little out of breath. There’s a lot of fun, jumping up and down to get that energy going.

So, we all have our own little tricks to get there, but that’s the fun of it. I think with horror, the reason why I love the genre so much is that really, it’s one of those things where you have to give yourself 100% to go for it. Otherwise, it’s not going to play. Really you have to be ready to go there, and ready to scream and ready to run it out. So, that was a lot of fun.

MF: Finally, you began your career as a child actor and I’m curious if working on this film with the actors that play your children brought back any memories of when you starting your own career?

EC: Oh, you nailed it. I mean, it was like a full circle moment when I got introduced to the kids. Because one, when I met Dylan who plays my son Steven in the film, it was like, that was me at that age. I started acting at that age.

So, him at 11 was me at 11 starting and I thought, “Wow, I could see so much of myself in him.” Then obviously with Abby who plays Ellie, my daughter, her being  18 and I was 18 on ‘24,’ playing the daughter in distress, so we had many conversations about that. Because I said, “Here’s some of the things that I had learned along the way.”

It just was incredible. So, both kids brought out a moment in time for me in my own career. Then I was like, “I’m in the Kiefer (Sutherland) role. Well how did this happen?” Like in a blink of an eye there I was, the female Jack Bauer, right? I mean, obviously he’s iconic, but I just felt like, “Oh my God, I’m in his shoes.” It was wild.

  • Fox Is Making Two ’24’ Spinoffs, Including Legal Drama

    Fox

Rumors circulated late last month that Fox was developing a “24” prequel series centered around a young Jack Bauer. This week, the network not only confirmed that that show was indeed in the works, but that a second spinoff of the hit series was also planned — with an entirely different focus.

During an appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox CEO and chairman Gary Newman discussed the new series, and how each would draw from the original Kiefer Sutherland-starring drama. According to Newman, “24” remains relevant to today’s audiences because “Times are fraught now, these are emotional times. Security continues to be a big issue.”

The focus of the prequel will reflect that, according to Newman:

” … people love Jack Bauer and [we] would tell a story that I think the audience would very much connect with — of how he became that character. It would be set in the same world of security.”

As for the second spinoff, that will actually be a legal drama, which will keep the framing of the 24-hour countdown clock. Newman said the creative team had been looking for a way to apply the template to that genre for years, adding that the two paired together naturally.

“You have to look for an arena where the stakes are high and time matters. [The legal version of ‘24′] deals with an execution of a prisoner and there are just 24 hours left until the execution is supposed to take place. So the stakes are high and it potentially has a lot of the same values of the original ‘24.’ Regardless of the political climate, the time’s always right for a show of that type.”

It certainly sounds like an intriguing combination. Here’s hoping it makes it out of the pilot stage and onto our screens soon (and fares better than Fox’s last attempt at a “24” spinoff, the Corey Hawkins-starring “Legacy,” which was canceled after one season).

  • Fox Developing ’24’ Prequel Series Telling Jack Bauer Origin Story

Fox Developing ’24’ Prequel Series Telling Jack Bauer Origin Story

    24, Kiefer Sutherland
    Fox

Bauer. Jack Bauer. The character made famous by Kiefer Sutherland in the original “24” series (2001-2010) may be getting his own origin story prequel series.

That’s the scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and TheWrap. The sites all referenced sources saying the next chapter in the “24” franchise will reveal how Jack Bauer became the badass fans know and love.

Original series creators Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran are said to be co-writing a script with longtime showrunner Howard Gordon for what’s hoped to be an ongoing series — as opposed to the limited series like “24: Legacy” or “24: Live Another Day.”

“24: Legacy” was canceled in 2017 after one season. At the time, Fox execs said they were working with “24” producers on continuing the franchise, still structured around the real-time format.

According to Deadline, this prequel is one of two “24” reboot ideas that are being developed, along with a legal thriller written by Howard Gordon and Jeremy Doner.

THR said the potential Jack Bauer prequel series hadn’t started casting yet, but we’d need a new younger Jack Bauer for an origin story. (It would still be nice to have Kiefer involved in some way.) It’s also not clear yet when the show could premiere on Fox. However, THR did repeat the rumor that Fox might launch a new “24” installment for midseason 2019. We’ll see.

  • ’24: Legacy’ Officially Canceled, But Fox Working on More Versions of ’24’

The clock has run out for “24: Legacy,” starring “24” in the future. Fox officially canceled “24: Legacy” after one season, but the network is now working with “24” producers now on continuing the franchise, possibly as an anthology, still built around the iconic real-time format. No “Legacy” cast members would be involved in that, Variety reported.

“24: Legacy” debuted after the Super Bowl this past February, but lost viewers along the way, ending its ranking at 34th among all broadcast series for the season, based on Nielsen live-plus-seven numbers.

At Fox’s May upfronts, co-chairman and CEO Gary Newman said Corey Hawkins’s schedule on Broadway for “Six Degrees of Separation” meant “24: Legacy” couldn’t be considered for the fall. It’s possible they were already planning to cancel it by that point and wanted to wait for the right time to say it. Newman did hint that more “24” could be in the mix, saying they were “so happy with the creative” on “24: Legacy” and thought Hawkins “did a great job.” Newman and co-chairman and CEO Dana Walden said, at the time, that they wanted to sit down with “24” executive producer Howard Gordon to see if he had ideas on where the franchise could go next.

So that must be where they are now, moving on from “Legacy” and deciding maybe the future is in an anthology franchise, like “American Horror Story.”

But if Corey Hawkins is now done with “24: Legacy,” maybe he’ll have time to return as Heath on “The Walking Dead” so we can finally see what happened to him.
