    Preview:

    • Disney brought several movies to its CinemaCon 2025 presentation.
    • The likes of ‘Tron: Ares,’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and more were showcased.
    • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ also showed footage, alongside Pixar’s Elio, Freakier Friday and the new, live-action/CG ‘Lilo & Stitch

While it is still looking to rebuild its fortunes, Disney can at least look back on 2024 as one with several big hits, especially ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

But it will have to prove that this year’s slate can match past successes. Luckily, the Mouse House has more strings to its bow than even the likes of Universal or Warner Bros., and heavy hitters including Pixar, Marvel and James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ series primed and ready with new entries, plus the return of ‘Tron’ to the grid… er, cinemas.

Predictions also include a potential hint on more ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ casting, following the viral chair back video of last week.

    Disney’s 2025 slate shown at CinemaCon 2025.

Let’s run down what was actually showcased…

Following the usual stuff about sponsors and theater owners (got to play to the crowd!), the Disney presentation signaled the end of CinemaCon’s studio events and began with the traditional sizzle reel of upcoming movies, framed in amusing fashion by having ‘Lilo & Stitch’s titular blue troublemaker wander through the rest of the slate.

Getting the presentation off to its formal stage start was Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment.

He was joined by Andrew Cripps, head of theatrical distribution at the studio to unveil the typically packed schedule of movies the studio will have across the rest of the year, and to extol the fact that Disney movies are Disney movies are typically in theaters an average of three weeks longer than any other studio.

After a quick self-pat-on-the-back for 2024’s success rate, it was into the first live-action portion, starting with…

    Lilo & Stitch

The latest animated-to-live-action conversion project faces additional pressure following ‘Snow White’s poor showing at the box office this past month. With Disney bosses pushing pause on a planned ‘Tangled’ live-action movie, ‘Lilo’ will need to perform in order to keep that particular strand of the company’s strategy alive beyond ‘Moana,’ due next year.

Some fresh, sneak peek footage from the new movie was screened for the crowd, featuring Stitch on a trip with Lilo and family; they go to a restaurant where the little blue alien causes the requisite chaos even as Lilo tries to teach him to behave. Some of what was shown has already popped up in the trailer, including Stitch squirting her with a soda gun.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ will invade cinemas on May 23rd.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan were ushered on stage to promote this sequel to the 2003 original, which moves the story forward and features even more body-switching chaos than last time as Curtis’ Tess and Lindsay’s Anna Coleman switch places with their teenage daughter/granddaughter.

Curtis and Lohan cued up a look at some brand new footage from the movie, which according to the duo has been playing well with test audiences.

Curtis says that the film was…

“Made to be seen on a big screen.”

The scene played showed Tess and Anna trying to win back Anna’s boyfriend –– but in different bodies.

‘Freakier Friday’ brings body swap chaos to theaters on August 8th.

The studio went all out with a light show to promote the third ‘Tron’ movie, and also brought Jeff Bridges and new franchise face Jared Leto to the stage.

    Bridges said,

“To be back on the grid was incredible, and working with Jared… It was a great time.”

For his part, Leto said he was obsessed and this was everything he wanted from a movie. It took him to a world he had never seen before.

    Leto described his character, Ares:

“An advanced program that crosses over to real world to fulfill his directive.”

After confirmation of Nine Inch Nails doing the music for the new movie, we got a look at some new footage.

What was screened was a look at Ares riding his bike in the real world, with Bridges’ Kevin Flynn narrating. We also see him ask Ares, “Are you ready? Because there is no coming back…”

‘Tron: Ares’ departs the grid for our world on October 10th.

With ‘The Amateur’ due on screens next week, its chunk of the presentation was minimal, limited to a full version of the scene in the pool we glimpse in the trailer, but show full-length here. It was followed by the trailer.

‘The Amateur,’ as mentioned, will find a way into theaters on April 11th.

The new ‘Predator’ movie from ‘Prey’s Dan Trachtenberg immediately looked interesting, since the Predator creature is more of a protagonist in this one, and it takes place on a new planet where he’s been exiled and must fight his way back.

Star (no, not as the Predator!) Elle Fanning arrived on stage to confirm that this movie breaks new ground in the ‘Predator’ universe. She also said something unprecedented happens. Her character is not being chased, she teams up with Predator and you see him in new light.

She cued up the first trailer for the new movie, which sees the Predator battling a giant, nearly invincible beast with Fanning’s help.

‘Predator: Badlands’ stalks into cinemas on November 7th.

The buzzy Bruce Springsteen biopic stars ‘The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong and both were on stage to hype it.

Strong, for the record, plays Jon Landau, Springsteen’s manager and producer. He said he sees the role as Lewis to Springsteen’s Clark.

White, meanwhile, explains that the movie charts Springsteen’s teenage years to around 1982.

James L. Brooks’ new comedy drama stars Emma Mackey as an idealistic young politician who juggles familial issues and a challenging work life while preparing to take over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor (Albert Brooks).

She co-stars with Jamie Lee Curtis, and the latter returned to the stage alongside Mackey for the presentation.

Brooks, meanwhile, received the Cinema Vérité Award on stage and called for more movies to have a 35-day window in theaters.

He also had a great quote about previewing movies with audiences:

“A woman came up to me and said the loveliest words: ‘they’re crying in the ladies toilet.’ Compare that to data.”

After Brooks’ emotional speech, we got a first look at the movie itself. The scene that played took place in a bar, where Curtis’ character takes Ella to meet her father, Woody Harrelson. They haven’t spoken in years after he dated her friend.

    That was followed the trailer.

‘Ella McCay’ will be in cinemas on September 19th.

From there, it was time to look at team Searchlight’s output, following a victory lap for the awards success of ‘A Real Pain’ and ‘A Complete Unknown.’ The studio arm’s new offering is…

    ‘The Roses’

Based on based on the 1981 novel ‘The War of the Roses’ by Warren Adler, the film movie Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao and Kate McKinnon.

Unlike the 1989 version, this Jay Roach-directed sees Cumberbatch and Colman as a successful chef and her businessman husband whose lives start to fall apart when he’s fired.

Things go from bad to worse, and as we saw in the trailer that played, it gets to the point where she has him at gunpoint.

‘The Roses’ fights for its place in theaters on August 29th.

Talking of guns, we moved on to one of the studio’s biggest… Marvel!

First up was the next movie from the prolific superhero franchise.

    Thunderbolts*

The ‘Thunderbolts*’ portion of the show kicked off with a funny bit about the cast being MIA –– Wyatt Russell appeared to have lost a lot of cash in the casino with co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus hoping the movie makes money so they can pay his debts!

But the main five –– Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Louis-Dreyfus emerged from the audience to head on stage and talk up the movie before introducing some fresh footage.

The scene featured the Thunderbolts driving through New York as Harbour’s Red Guardian tries to bond with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The team has to fight their way through bad guys to Avengers tower.

We got an extended look at the Avengers Tower scene where Louis-Dreyfus gathers the gang –– after having sent them to kill each other and being frustrated that they teamed up.

There was also a very brief look at the introduction of Sentry (Lewis Pullman). And following that? A sizzle reel of scenes from the movie, which appears to be full of chaotic fun.

‘Thunderbolts*’ heads to cinemas on May 2nd. Less than a month for this one, folks!

That was followed by Marvel boss Kevin Feige, currently in the UK on the set of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ (which is “days away from the start of production”) confirming the appearance of the original X-Men team in the new movie.

He also cued up an early look at…

Marvel’s First Family (played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are introduced via a talk show piece on how they came to be the super-team they are.

We also got our first look at Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, who cautions that planet Earth is “marked for death.” Kirby’s Sue Storm says they’ll “fight the threat as a family”.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ flies into theaters on July 25th.

Pixar’s latest finds a young lad dreaming of being abducted by aliens.

Zoe Saldaña, who plays the title character’s Aunt Olga, arrived on stage to talk about the new ‘toon.

A scene from the movie was shown in 3D, showing Elio brought on board an alien spaceship that is more like a living planet via a tractor beam, where he meets the vessel’s AI. He’s been recruited to join the universe’s smartest creatures to work together as a collective… But have they made a mistake? Elio meets and bonds with a young alien creature.

‘Elio’ heads into space (and theaters) on June 20th.

Thanksgiving sees the return of Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), the mismatched buddy duo of rabbit police officer and crafty fox. This time around, they’re on an undercover mission to stop a murderous reptile (Ke Huy Quan’s Gary).

In a video introduction, we got Bateman changing the show’s title to “ZinemaCon” and there are animal jokes about theaters –– AMZ, Pandango, Fur D X, followed by giving other Disney movies critter-like makeovers (‘Thundercolts,’ ‘Sealio,’ ‘The Fantastic Fur.’)

    'Zootopia 2'. Photo: Disney.
    ‘Zootopia 2’. Photo: Disney.

Quan arrived on stage to discuss the sequel and his role as Gary the snake. And that Judy and Nick go to a therapy animal (played by ‘Abbot Elementary’s Quinta Brunson) to sort their strained friendship –– which we saw in a scene from the movie. That was followed by a scene of Nick and Judy at Marsh resort trying to track down Gary.

‘Zootopia 2’ goes wild in theaters on November 26th.

James Cameron appeared via video from New Zealand, where he’s still at work on the latest ‘Avatar’ outing. He was sorry he isn’t there in person, but he did tell the crowd he’d sent some footage.

He promised “increased emotional heart and soul,” and that the Sully family will be put through the wringer (again) as they face the Ash People. We’ll also meet the Wind Traders.

Saldaña (who has been part of the franchise since the 2009 original) returned to the stage to introduce the footage.

We saw Jake and wife Neytiri (Saldaña) flying a dragon creature to Wind Traders’ ship where Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion), the son of Miles Quaritch, lives now.

That preceded a reel of other scenes, including Jake telling Neytiri they can’t live in hate, humans attacked the Na’vi, a shot of the whale-like creatures we met in ‘The Way of Water,’ the return of Stephen Lang’s Quaritch and Varang, the Na’vi leader of the volcano-dwelling Ash People threatening  Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), the daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine’s Na’vi avatar who was adopted by the Sully family.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ welcomes us back to Pandora on December 19th.

    Preview:

    • Paramount offered news on some of its upcoming movies at its CinemaCon Presentation.
    • ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘The Running Man’ were among those hyped.
    • Surprisingly little was said about ‘Scream 7’ and a few other big titles.

Paramount had a very mixed 2024. Though the likes of ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ and ‘Smile 2’ did decent business, the studio also had its share of disappointments –– despite a compelling subject matter in musician Robbie Williams (albeit one unfamiliar to many in the States) and the intriguing choice to portray him entirely as a CGI ape, ‘Better Man’ became a domestic flop.

The studio is also dealing with being in flux in terms of management, with Skydance merger battling its way to closure.

More importantly, 2025 is ‘Mission’ critical, and by that, we mean ‘Mission: Impossible –– The Final Reckoning,’ which needs to reassure theater chain owners that the franchise can get back to its glory days after the disappointing returns for 2023’s ‘Dead Reckoning.’

Tom Cruise attends the Abu Dhabi Red Carpet and Premiere of 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' presented by Paramount Pictures and Skydance at Emirates Palace Hotel on June 26, 2023, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Photo by Darren Arthur/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures.

Not to mention that this is potentially the actual final ‘Mission: Impossible,’ at least starring Tom Cruise in his ongoing collaboration with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie. The big question: would the company announce that this really is the last chapter in a saga that began back in the 1990s (at least in movie terms), as a way to goose interest? Or would it confidently confirm that, like James Bond, Ethan Hunt would return?

Either way, the CinemaCon presentation was likely to feature Tom Cruise in some fashion –– be it on stage, or on video clinging to a plane, train or automobile (or building).

Or even, possibly just on screen holding his breath underwater during the entire panel, simply to prove he can.

Other predications for movies to be covered? The new ‘Naked Gun,’ with Liam Neeson playing the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic bumbling cop Frank Drebin, a new Rihanna-voiced ‘Smurfs’ outing and Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’ are all fair shouts, alongside –– looking even further forward –– ‘Scream 7.’

Ghostface in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group's 'Scream VI.'
Ghostface in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group’s ‘Scream VI.’

And now, on with the show…

Stunts are often something studios like to roll out, so Paramount kicked off with Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution riding a motorcycle on stage. He rode off to be replaced by three other riders, who did jumps off ramps and flips, all with smoke and explosions. Aronson was back to announce, “that’s right, I do my own stunts!”

He also talked up the company’s efforts to make 2025 a rebound year after the strikes and pledged to show fewer ads and trailers in theaters (phew!), plus other deals such as discount Wednesdays and extended matinee hours.

Following a sizzle reel of Paramount Pictures past and future, Brian Robbins, president and CEO took the stage to announce big news… Four ‘Paw Patrol’ movies for each pup to compete with Sony’s Beatles movies. He was joking of course. Or was he???!!

(L to R) Callum Shoniker as “Rocky,” Christian Corrao as “Marshall,” Luxton Handspiker as “Rubble,” Nylan Parthipan as “Zuma,” Christian Convery as “Chase,” McKenna Grace as “Skye,” Marsai Martin as “Liberty,” Alan Kim as “Nano,” Finn Lee-Epp as “Ryder,” North West as “Mini,” and Brice Gonzalez as “Tot" in 'Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie' from Spin Master Entertainment, Nickelodeon Movies, and Paramount Pictures.

Robbins also said that the studio’s guiding principle is shareholder… Sorry, that people love going to the movies.

Then, it was on to talking about movies in production for 2026, including ‘Children of Blood and Bone’, directed Gina Prince-Bythewood, who co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Tomi Adeyemi, which stars Amandla Stenberg, Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch and Idris Elba. Also mentioned? ‘Scream 7,’ ‘Sonic 4’ ‘Heart of the Beast, which stars Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer, and the recently-delayed Kendrick Lamar movie crafted by ‘South Park‘ duo Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

    But back to 2025…

    The Running Man

Co-writer/director Edgar Wright was on stage to tout the Glen Powell-starring new version of the dystopian King story where civilians compete in deadly games to win cash prizes.

‘The Running Man,’ is per Wright is “the kind of movie that gives everyone something to cheer for.” He explained that since the source novel is set in 2025, so is the movie.

And talking of cheering, he was joined by star Powell on stage.

    Powell said:

“This is the full meal. What Edgar has cooked up with this one is nothing short of extraordinary,”

The actor joked that he asked pal and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ boss Tom Cruise for advice on using a stunt double –– and has paid the price for doing so much himself.

If that wasn’t enough star wattage, Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin joined the party.

“We knew we were part of something really special,” gushed Domingo, while Brolin admitted it was a thrill to play a wonderfully maniacal character.

Despite the movie having wrapped three short weeks ago, Domingo (dropping into character as show host Bobby Thompson) was able to cue up some footage, and a first look played.

In an extended trailer, Brolin’s executive character recruits Glen for show to protect his family. Lots of action. We see him in show and then being chased.

‘The Running Man’ sprints into theaters on November 7th.

    ccZnQW14g0IDFQCLQpvMv2

From there, it was on to animation, with word on ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,’ (which has Jennifer Hudson in a voice role, ‘Aang: The Last Airbender,’ featuring Dave Bautista and Steven Yeung, and a ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem’ sequel with Jeff Rowe back as director and Seth Rogen again producing.

But all that was prelude to…

    Smurfs

The latest take on the little blue creatures features, as previously mentioned, Rihanna (who touted the movie in a video introduction) as the voice of Smurfette, in the story of Papa Smurf being kidnapped and the others having to find him.

In addition to the music megastar, the cast is loaded, with Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman all aboard.

The first trailer for the new animated/live-action outing was shown, showing how our diminutive heroes travel to the real world in search of Papa and encounter Ken, his brother (Offerman).

‘Smurfs’ will smurf its way into theaters on July 18th.

    Next?

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants

The latest SpongeBob film had voice star Tom Kenny on stage to talk up the movie, (he called it a “coming of age” story), joined by fellow performer Mark Hamill. Cue the ‘Corvette Summer’ jokes!

Hamill –– who plays the Flying Dutchman –– made the crowd laugh by saying,

“I did an episode in Season Five and I did such a good job they asked me back 18 years later!”

We got a first look at the film itself. Like ‘Smurfs,’ (and some other SpongeBob outings) it blends animation with live action, and features Clancy Brown as Blackbeard. The story finds out hero wanting to grow up and embrace his macho side by having more adventures –– including to the underworld.

‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’ will sail into theaters on December 19th.

    The Naked Gun

The new reboot of the classic comedy franchise –– spawned, let’s not forget from the files of ‘Police Squad’ is a Seth MacFarlane-produced take on the idea with Liam Neeson and Paul Walter Hauser among the cast.

‘Naked Gun’s presentation kicked off with a saxophone player on stage pumping out noir-y music as Chris Aronson stood silently on stage, while a recorded voice-over played over the speakers as if his internal monologue was happening in real time.

    Best line?

“This musician sounds expensive, but this is Vegas, you have to pay for good sax…”

The teaser was shown, which you can find here:

    LmkEkE9t

It’s a funny clip, introducing Neeson’s badass Frank Jr taking out bank robbers, only slightly undercut by being dressed as a Catholic schoolgirl complete with panties. Bonus points for a fun final gag featuring a wall of tributes to dead cops, crying sons honoring their fathers and possibly the best way to incorporate OJ Simpson (who played Nordberg in the original).

‘The Naked Gun’ stumbles on to screens on August 1st.

From there it was time for…

    Roofman

The new movie from Derek Cianfrance stars Channing Tatum, who was on stage to hype it up.

He cued the first trailer for the movie, a biopic of the fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, a former United States Army Reserve officer, known colloquially as “Roofman” due to his propensity to steal from branches of McDonald’s after entering their premises via the roof, and, after he was jailed and got out evaded further capture from police by hiding in the wall of a Toys ‘R’ Us store.

The cast also includes Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, Peter Dinklage, LaKeith Stanfield and Uzo Aduba.

‘Roofman’ steals into cinemas on October 3rd.

Paramount’s Robbins returned to the stage to introduce the one, the only Tom Cruise, who got a rapturous reception.

Instead of launching into promotion, Cruise took a moment to memorialize friend and ‘Top Gun’ co-star Val Kilmer, who recently died.

“I can’t tell you how much I respected his work and to have him in ‘Top Gun’ and back for ‘Maverick.’ Thank you, Val. I wish you well on your next journey.”

(L to R) Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun'. Photo: Paramount Pictures.

From there, he enthused about ‘Mission’ writer/director Chris McQuarrie, with Cruise mentioning how long they’ve been collaborating (on the Ethan Hunt movies and beyond). He even joked that people think “McQ” (as Tom calls him) is Jonathan Lipnicki from ‘Jerry Maguire’ all grown up!

Cruise went on to talk about how the ‘Mission’ movies are a puzzle and a Rubik’s Cube made under intense pressure, living breathing things where endless discoveries are made in the process.

They also discussed how Cruise brought McQuarrie in to rewrite scenes in ‘Ghost Protocol’ but didn’t tell Brad Bird or the rest of cast. Brad and Simon Pegg said on set, “who is this guy?” Tom replied, “That’s McQ”. Apparently McQuarrie came up with the “Blue is glue, red is dead” stunt scene on the spot in Dubai.

There was also time for Cruise to add that he’s looking forward to seeing ‘F1’ and his recollections of racing go-karts against friend Brad Pitt (who stars in that movie) while making ‘Interview with the Vampire’ together.

Switching tracks back to ‘Mission,’ Cruise stressed the challenges and importance of shooting in the pandemic, keeping crews working and the industry going.

“We were able to deliver these movies to theaters despite being shut down by pandemic and two strikes.”

Cruise then introduced McQuarrie himself, who strode on stage and quipped:

“Tom knows I can’t stand compliments, he’s enjoying this immensely…”

He’ll have to suffer more, as he’s receiving the Director of the Year award at the CinemaCon awards later.

He offers that he was ready to quit the business, but Cruise saw potential in him.

Cruise: “I’m here today because if your vision and trust.”

    And for McQ’s side:

“It’s been fun to work with you and put you in harm’s way for everyone’s pleasure.”

The new ‘Mission’ movie contains some of the most complex practical sequences on celluloid –– not that that should be surprising from these two.

Admitting that they’d be nowhere without audiences, Cruise introduced the new ‘Final Reckoning’ trailer, but not before name-checking every writer and director who has worked on the franchise so far, plus the executive likes of Sherry Lansing, Sumner Redstone and Paula Wagner too.

Then, it was time for the trailer itself, which sometimes felt like an expanded version of the teaser that arrived last year.

Lots of Ethan Hunt action (of course!) with Tom leaping off and onto things, plus a look at some newer cast members including Nick Offerman and Janet McTeer. It also serves as a love-letter to the whole franchise.

Indeed, the ‘Mission’ portion of the presentation felt like that too –– while no one said directly it’s the end, this felt pretty final. Until they announce the next one, that is…

    Preview:

    • ‘Project Hail Mary’ and more were showcased at Amazon MGM’s CinemaCon presentation.
    • There was news of ‘Masters of the Universe’ and Luca Guadagno’s latest.
    • Ryan Gosling, Ben Affleck and more showed up to support their movies.

Amazon has popped up at CinemaCon a couple of times in the past, but usually partnered with one of the big theatrical studios. But as Amazon MGM Studios plans to hugely expand its cinematic footprint (having also joined the Motion Picture Association), it is also making its big, proper debut at the movie trade show.

Given the recent giant news about Amazon gaining full control of the Bond franchise, there was plenty of expectation of some announcement about that, though even with the hiring of producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman to oversee the company’s plans, unless the deal to bring them in was sealed a lot earlier than reported, was it likely that we’d have anything beyond the company touting the new arrangement?

It was an unusually late schedule time-wise, presumably because the likes of Sony, Warners, Disney and co. had snapped up the prime spots. But as a statement of intent from the new kid on the block, it had to deliver.

So let’s explore what was actually revealed…

    Project Hail Mary

The latest Phil Lord and Chris Miller joint (that isn’t a ‘Spider-Verse’ offering) is this adaptation of ‘The Martian’ author Andy Weir’s book.

It’s another tale of a reluctant astronaut, this one played by Ryan Gosling, who has to try and save the Earth. The presentation kicked off with the impressive first teaser for the sci-fi movie. Set to Harry Styles’ ‘Sign of the Times,’ it looks very different to other Lord/Miller movies, but also great.

Gosling plays a schoolteacher recruited by Sandra Huller to save the planet, which is threatened by a dying sun. “You want the right stuff. I’ve got the wrong stuff! I put the NOT in astronaut. I can’t even moonwalk!” he claims amusingly (it’s even funnier coming from the man who played Neil Armstrong in ‘First Man.’)

Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios took the stage to announce that the company is committed to theatrical releases, with 14 working titles being readied for next year and 15 planned for 2027. They’re apparently ahead of schedule.

And the ‘Project Hail Mary’ team –– Lord, Miller and Gosling –– arrived on stage to caution the crowd that all the footage was work in progress, with Gosling singling cinematographer Greig Fraser (who also worked on the ‘Dune’ movies) out for particular praise.

Lord and Miller explained how much of themselves they poured into the movie, the biggest project they’ve ever worked on.

Gosling: “This is why we go to the movies, and I’m not just saying it because I’m in it. I’m ALSO a producer on this movie.”

    Says Miller:

“Thank you for seeing movies on the big screen with the most weird and disturbing popcorn buckets imaginable.” Can’t wait to see their ‘Hail Mary’ bucket…

‘Project Hail Mary Blasts’ off in theaters on March 20th, 2026.

    BCcUFMWbBHOY3zv0jhK5J4

There was more talk of other future projects, including the Michael B. Jordan starring/directed ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ and ‘Verity,’ the romantic thriller adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel and directed by Michael Showalter.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ apparently “has a few unexpected, modern twists.” Bradford Young is the cinematographer on the movie, and ‘Black Panther’s Ruth E. Carter will handle the costumes.

‘Verity,’ meanwhile, had a teaser to show, featuring the song ‘Fade Into You’ by Mazzy Star, and introduced by a fun video by the cast.

‘Verity’ has a May15th, 2026 release date set, while ‘Thomas Crown’ is too early in the process to score its own slot yet.

    Next!

    After The Hunt

The latest drama from the prolific Luca Guadagnino stars Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield and follows a professor whose career is derailed by scandal. Andrew Garfield’s character is accused of assaulting Ayo Edebiri’s, and it becomes major news after Julia Roberts’ character, an attorney, takes on his case.

Edebiri and Garfield showed up on stage with Guadagnino, and Garfield praised his director, who he said he’d wanted to work with for 15 years.

The first footage from the movie was screened for the audience via a trailer.

‘After The Hunt’ will head to theaters on October 17th.

    Next up?

    Mercy

The new Chris Pratt sci-fi pic ‘Mercy’ was the next to be spotlighted, with the first footage of the movie, directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

It’s a blend of courtroom drama and action where an AI program serves as the judge, jury, and executioner. Pratt has 90 minutes to prove he didn’t kill his wife, using all technology available.

Since the trailer introduces the audiences to a high-tech chair where Pratt’s character is confined, what better way to promote than by having Pratt in said chair on stage for the presentation, jokingly forced to say a proper thank you to the assembled exhibitors, lest he had to Uber home.

Co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, the film will be in cinemas on January 23rd, 2026.

    Followed by…

Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie

Lest you start checking again whether we’ve turned the clock back to April Fool’s Day, this is in fact a very real movie, directed by ‘Despicable Me’ veteran Kyle Balda, and is a live-action murder mystery where the detectives are sheep.

The audience reaction was laughter at first –– it is a fun concept –– but the cast, including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, Nicholas Braun and Nicholas Galitzine, is certainly impressive, and the tone of the footage a lot of fun.

‘Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie’ will venture into cinemas on February 20th, 2026.

    On to…

    Crime 101

‘American Animals’ director Bart Layton’s new crime thriller stars Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Monica Barbaro and Barry Keoghan, and sees a detective tracking a jewel thief.

Director Layton, who says that from the very beginning, this movie was written, imagined, planned and dreamed for the big screen, is joined by Hemsworth and Berry on stage to introduce a trailer.

Layton also says he wrote Keoghan’s part as a dirt bike-riding maniac especially for him.

Hemsworth added that they wanted to make a gripping and thought provoking thriller that really captures L.A.

‘Crime 101’ has yet to lock down a release date.

    snf2dfgJQQ3OtalPuYVKD7

That was followed by a quick look at new hitman movie ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ directed by Bassam Tariq and starring Mahershala Ali.

    jXNSbw9WmAl9vHSP1xatb7

    Then it was on to…

    ‘Is God Is’

Director Aleshea Harris makes her cinematic debut with an adaptation of her play.

Vivica A. Fox took the stage with some of the other cast to show a trailer.

It’s the story of two little girls and their mother who were the victims of an arson attack at the hands of their father (Sterling K. Brown). Their mother’s dying wish? That the two girls, now adults, kill their father.

It’s described as a Greek tragedy crossed with Afropunk and the classic spaghetti Western. The cast also includes Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Kara Young and Mallori Johnson.

After that, head of film Courtenay Valenti and marketing chief Sue Kroll were introduced to extoll the company’s commitment to theatrical and that it is ramping up more productions from the Orion and United Artists.

From there, it was back to film promotion with…

Daniel Craig as James Bond in 'Casino Royale.'
Daniel Craig as James Bond in ‘Casino Royale.’

Bond! But there isn’t very much to tell yet (as we guessed), with more of a mention that chosen producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are getting down to work in London to figure out next steps.

“(We are) committed to honoring the legacy of Bond while bringing a fresh take.”

From a spy to a different type of hero with…

    Masters of the Universe

With the movie finally in production after years in development limbo, a behind-the-scenes featurette screened, which included a lot of work-in-progress props, and some sound bites from the powers that be promising a movie that is loyal to the cartoon and the toys.

Director Travis Knight gushed about having wanted to make this movie for years, adding:

“I have been a fan of Masters of the Universe pretty much my entire life. It was something I lived and breathed. I had the toys. I even had a He-Man haircut.”

‘Masters of the Universe’ will be on screens on June 5th, 2026.

The follow-up to the 2016 original, with director Gavin O’Connor returning alongside stars Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal.

Affleck, Bernthal, Cynthia Addai Robinson and O’Connor were there to present an extended trailer for the action movie, which indicates that this sequel leans into the buddy comedy interplay between the brothers played by Affleck and Bernthal. While the trailer’s humor worked, the scripted banter on stage left something to the imagination, though it wasn’t really the fault of the cast.

    • ‘Wicked: For Good’, ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ and more were showcased at Universal’s CinemaCon show.
    • There was news of sequels to the live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘The Bad Guys.’
    • The likes of Jon M. Chu and Scarlett Johansson were on stage to support their movies.

Universal’s 2024 was successful partly thanks to Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation ‘Wicked,’ and with follow-up ‘Wicked: For Good’ on the way this year, some of the studio’s focus was always going to be on the movie –– which features two new songs not found in the stage source material.

Beyond that, we were expecting peeks at movies from the studio’s various arms and partners at this year’s CinemaCon presentation, including horror home Blumhouse and DreamWorks Animation, which continues to push the likes of the ongoing ‘Shrek’ franchise and others.

And not forgetting dinosaurs: another jewel in Universal’s crown in the ‘Jurassic Park’/‘Jurassic World’ movies, and with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ headed to theaters this summer, we’d have been shocked to not see something fresh from that.

Here’s what happened at the studio’s show and tell…

Universal’s big display kicked off sonically, with the company’s President of music and publishing Mike Knobloch introducing Rickey Minor and an all-star orchestra playing a collection of tunes from the studio’s back catalogue –– ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Fast & Furious,’ ‘Despicable Me,’ ‘Jaws’ and even the likes of DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Shrek’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ with clips from the movies on screens.

And, naturally, last year’s huge smash was among them, with ‘Wicked’ fully represented.

Universal chairman Donna Langley arrived on stage to celebrate the fact that the studio has released more theatrical movies since the pandemic than any other. She bypassed the idea that shrinking theatrical windows were to blame for audiences skipping cinemas.

Pete Levinson, the chairman of Universal distribution took over to essentially praise the company for its $3 billion in grosses last year. And to remind us all that ‘Wicked: For Good’ is on the way in November.

    But properly first?

    Jurassic World: Rebirth

As the orchestra stuck up John Williams’ classic ‘Jurassic Park’ theme, stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali arrived on stage alongside director Gareth Edwards to talk about the movie.

Noted dino fan Johansson related how she’s tried to get cast in all three previous ‘Jurassic World’ movies without success, eventually collaring Steven Spielberg to plead her case.

Edwards joked she was probably too expensive for the films –– which didn’t seem to sit well with Scarlet (probably all in good fun?)

The director also recalled watching the original ‘Jurassic Park’ as a kid (10 times in a day!) and how much of an honor it is direct this talented cast in a ‘Jurassic’ movie. He dropped mention that Mahershala is an Oscar winner, to which Ali comically corrected him that he has two!

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ filmed in Thailand, with Johansson recalling many “pinch me’ moments on set and on location.

The trio introduced some fresh footage from the movie –– some of it unfinished. Mahershala said he’d seen it, to which Scarlet joked she was supposed to see everything first per her contract.

As for the footage, it largely tracked what we saw in the first trailer, with Johansson’s specialist leading a team to an abandoned ‘Jurassic Park’ staging island to retrieve genetic material to source lifegiving medical cures. A new hybrid dino we’ve yet to meet

Craig Robinson and Awkwafina were on stage to discuss it (and crack wise, including joking that co-stars Sam RockwellMarc Maron and Anthony Ramos aren’t there because they’re banned from Vegas).

Holding inflatable versions of their characters, Robinson said:

“We’ve got a legit franchise now, baby!”

The first trailer for the movie was played, showing that our Bad Guys are lured out of do-gooding by a group of bad girls.

Directed by Justin Tipping, the movie had stars Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers on stage to promote it.

    Wayans began by quipping:

“I’m finally the only Wayans here. I’m tenth of ten kids. I don’t think Keenan (his brother) knows my name!”

Withers, meanwhile, told the crowd that they’ve never seen Wayans like this before.

The pair then cued up the creepy first look at the movie, which promises a blend of ‘The Substance’ and American Football.

Next, it was the turn of Focus Features…

Focus chairman Peter Kujawski took the stage to hype his studio arm’s upcoming titles and say that every film by the company is made for theatrical.

He dropped word of Wes Anderson’s latest, ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet,’ ‘Anemone,’ which Ronan Day-Lewis co-wrote with his father, Daniel Day-Lewis, who left retirement to appear in the movie. And, of course, there’s reportedly final ‘Downton Abbey’ movie ‘The Grand Finale.’

    Bugonia

That was followed by the first trailer for ‘Kinds of Kindness’ director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie, ‘Bugonia,’ which reunites that movie’s Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

It’ll creep into theaters on November 7th.

The orchestra struck up music of the video game adaptation, which heralded one of the animatronic characters (well, a suit based on them) striding on stage.

After some confusion as to how to remove the head, it turned out to be company boss Jason Blum, who joked he so loves to save money that he was in the costumes the whole time for the original movie.

The original ‘Freddy’s is Blumhouse’s biggest hit of all time, so of course the sequel is already in the works. Blum also apologized for the decision to make that movie day and date on Peacock, so this follow-up will be cinemas only upon release.

    And that release? December 5th.

Blum also cued up a teaser, which sees the return of Josh Hutcherson’s Mike and more animatronic chaos.

Ethan Hawke as The Grabber in 'The Black Phone,' directed by Scott Derrickson.
Ethan Hawke as The Grabber in ‘The Black Phone,’ directed by Scott Derrickson.

Not done with the costume theatrics, Blum arrived back on stage in a Grabber mask to offer that the sequel to Scott Derrickson’s 2021 kidnap horror thriller will be in theaters on October 17th.

Actor Madeleine McGraw, who returns for the new movie (and is CinemaCon 2025 Rising Star of the Year), joined Blum on stage to talk about the movie, which is Derrickson’s first-ever sequel.

We were treated to a first look trailer for the new movie. The footage finds the two kids (played by McGraw and Mason Thames) dealing with the repercussions of the first movie. Ethan Hawke’s Grabber is back –– even though he died –– but we only hear his voice in the trailer.

The follow-up takes the ‘Terminator 2’ approach, with an even more threatening AI system going online and M3GAN has to be re-activated to stop it.

Atomic Monster boss James Wan –– whose company has formed a creative partnership with Blumhouse –– came on stage to talk up ‘Soulm8te,’ which if it sounds like a more grown up take on ‘M3GAN’ (or really, ‘Companion,’ with its story of a female robo-partner who turns out to be an issue), that’s because it’s set in the same universe as the devious doll.

‘Soulm8te’s first look played, followed by word of a January 2md. 2026 release.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ will open in theaters on April 7, 2023.

Jim Orr, the studio’s president of theatrical distribution, came on stage to discuss even further in the future. To coin a phrase, more sequels!

He confirmed the likes of ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie 2′ (April 2026), ‘Minions 3’ (July 2026) and ‘Shrek 5‘ (yes, featuring Zendaya in a voice role, arriving Christmas 2026).

But there are originals too, including Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ (July 2026) and a certain Mr. Steven Spielberg’s still-to-be-titled new event movie, which will arrive in June 2026.

To the strains of ‘Defying Gravity,’ the presentation wrapped with ‘Wicked’ stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande taking the stage –– and, yes, referring to holding space as per the viral interview meme –– to discuss the follow-up, and thank theater owners for their support.

They were joined by producer Marc Platt and director Jon M. Chu, who joked that this is the third year his movie(s) have closed out a Universal CinemaCon presentation.

    Chu quipped:

    “It all worked out!”

We got a first look at the movie via an extended trailer, which finds Glinda and Elphaba meeting again after some time has passed since the end of ‘Wicked.’

    • Warner Bros. showed off its upcoming slate at CinemaCon.
    • Movies such as ‘Superman’ and ‘F1’ were promoted.
    • The likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Gunn and Jerry Bruckheimer were present.

Taking the third spot at CinemaCon this year, Warner Bros. is in the middle of some issues, including the fact that their latest slate, betting big on largely indie directors handed giant budgets has yet to truly pay off –– witness ‘Mickey 17’s less-than-stellar box office.

But the studio will be trying to drum up enthusiasm for its upcoming slate, which still features some heavy hitters, including the latest take on ‘Superman’ (the company will be hoping that DC Studios boss James Gunn’s sprawling new superhero universe will fly out of the gate) and Ryan Coogler’s  ‘Sinners’ (part of the directors-given-big-budgets experiment).

With the ‘Superman’ music playing even as the presentation starts, it’s not hard to spot what the studios’ big focus is likely to be.

    Here we go…

As with Disney’s bulging portfolio of labels, Warner Bros. has the likes of WB Animation, New Line, DC Studios and the main Warners movie studio under its umbrella. We heard about projects from all of them today.

Jeff Goldstein, president of global distribution at the studio, took the stage to kick things off with a sizzle reel of the movies the studio has not written off for tax reasons.

That was followed by current WB film bosses Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who arrived on stage to start the hype in person.

    First up…

    Sinners

Introduced by director Ryan Coogler (who also wrote the script) via a video, the new movie features Michael B. Jordan playing twin brothers who return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Coogler called it his most personal movie yet. Which makes us wonder how many supernatural creatures he’s battled in his life.

‘Sinners’ will be haunting theaters on April 18th.

A key tentpole in the film team’s tactic of giving respected filmmakers big budget, this is the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead, playing a member of a group of ex-revolutionaries that reunites to rescue his daughter.

DiCaprio walked on stage alongside co-stars Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor to talk up the movie, which DiCaprio described as “incredibly epic.”

And according to him, it was an “honor” working with “master filmmaker” PTA, with whom he’s wanted to collaborate for 20 years.

The stars introduced an extended trailer for the new movie, full of more of the wacky action to be found within.

‘One Battle After Another’ storms onto screens on September 26th and seems likely to be making an awards play.

(L to R) Director Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jessie Buckley at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest directorial job is a new, slightly skewed take on ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ as the doctor’s creation asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change.

Gyllenhaal and Jessie Buckley (the latter plays the title character) strode on stage to discuss the movie, which was shot in IMAX.

The director admitted that after ‘The Last Daughter’ she was looking for something popular and big, but also radical and she wasn’t sure what until she was at a party and saw someone with a bride tattoo.

Here’s what she said about the movie:

“I’m really interested in monsters. We all have something a little monstrous in us, which is why I think we love monsters.”

Buckley, meanwhile, said she felt like the script, written by Gyllenhaal, had an electrical current running through it. And that Frankenstein’s monster’s (Christian Bale) relationship with the Bride is the punkest ever.

This take on the creature is a movie lover. We find him in a theater watching movies and his best friend is a Hollywood actor. Gyllenhaal, likewise, though she admitted she had seen exactly two IMAX movies before making one.

An extended trailer played for the movie to wrap up this portion.

‘The Bride!’ is lumbering towards theaters on March 6th, 2026.

Writer/director Zach Cregger (who was already in Las Vegas because he’s also working on the new ‘Resident Evil’ movie for Sony) was brought out to tout his new horror pic.

He described ‘Weapons’ as “twisty and turny” and had a teaser to show that may never be made public.

In it, kids wake up at 2:17am and wreak havoc on a small town. The footage is narrated by a five-year old’s voice. Mobs of parents are losing their minds in a school meeting. Josh Brolin’s character demands and yells for answers.

Julia Garner, a concerned parent is distressed and wake up with night sweats over the stress. She walks into a classroom in the middle of the night to find spooky kids at desk.

Director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer took the stage to promote their new collaboration –– their first together since ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’

While it’s an Apple production, Warners has the distribution rights and will be hoping for big things from the Brad Pitt-starring movie, which finds him as a Formula One who driver comes out of retirement to mentor and team with a younger driver.

It’s full of racing action (including Pitt, who drove cars himself at 185 miles an hour at actual race tracks) and Bruckheimer (no stranger to hype) said he believes it’ll be the cinematic event of the summer.

10 minutes of the movie were screened, and it races into theaters on June 27th.

The major title to get a boost was this Seussian comedy, with Bill Hader taking the stage and showing his “audition reel” –– actually his ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit playing the Cat.

Hader claimed his daughter wanted Ryan Gosling to voice the cat instead of him!

But the actual screening was a work-in-progress trailer for the movie, which features the Things.

‘The Cat in the Hat’ will be in theaters on February 27th, 2026.

From there, it was time to fly to DC Studios…

    Superman

(L to R) James Gunn, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and David Corenswet at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

A behind-the-scenes featurette on ‘Superman’ featured writer/director (and DC Studios co-chief) James Gunn making the movie and talking it up.

Gunn and Safran arrived on stage to fill the crowd in on their plans for this year and beyond, with Safran declaring 2025 “the summer of ‘Superman.’ ”

Stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult (AKA Suprman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor) joined the DC bosses on stage to promote the movie, with Corenswet and Brosnahan telling the assembled crowd it was their first CinemaCon.

Gunn, meanwhile, said he was offered the chance to direct a Superman movie in 2018, but chose an “easier path” –– ‘The Suicide Squad.’ However, the concept stuck with him.

So, how will he adapt a well-used story for a modern audience?

“It just hit me. It has all the fantastic moments we haven’t seen before in this universe.”

James Gunn at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.
James Gunn at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

Corenswet, for his part remembered his screen test with Nick, who stepped out of a shadows like something from a comic book page and it was terrifying. He also recalled his very long screen test with Rachel.

Hoult shared that seeing David flying onto the set made him feel he was witnessing the magic of cinema in first person and he had this little grin on his face. He turned around and everyone else did as well. But he still found time for some Luthorian posturing: “as an icon, it’s nice to finally play an icon.”

And despite the pressure, Corenswet revealed that it’s a great honor to play a role that so exists in the public consciousness that even if you’ve never read a comic, you know who these symbols and characters are.

Rachel Brosnahan at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.
Rachel Brosnahan at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

For Brosnahan, it was like theater:

“I feel these stories endure because there is someone for everyone. We get to stand on the shoulders of giants and find our way into their heads through a great script.”

A big element of this Supes is his faithful –– though not always obedient –– hound Krypto, which Gunn based on his own dog, Ozu.

The actors also discussed Gunn’s big vision for DC –– and how unique he is, loving every aspect of the process.

Gunn explained that the movie is about people and human connections.

(L to R) Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.
(L to R) Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet at CinemaCon 2025. Photo: Warner Bros.

And for a fun part of the presentation, the actors were asked which character they would play other than their own. Corenswet chose Batman, Rachel wanted to be Lex and Hoult, candidly,

“I’ve interviewed for Superman and Batman and I didn’t get either, so I think I was meant to play Lex!”

The team then introduced a sneaky new look at the movie, in a funny scene where Krypto rescues our hero. That was followed by First look at Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s robots and then an extended trailer with a few new shots including Lois interviewing Superman.

‘Superman’ heads faster than a speeding bullet to screens on July 11th.

    mpChTLmo

And with that, the Warner Bros. panel was wrapped. Seemed surprising not to have more from DC Studios, but perhaps next year?

    • The likes of Sydney Sweeney and Jenna Ortega were there to showcase their new movies.
    • ‘The Long Walk’ and some fresh ‘John Wick’ news was also shared.

Lionsgate had, let’s be generous here, a pretty dreadful 2024, with movies such as ‘The Crow’ and ‘Borderlands’ seriously underperforming. The company has also been through more financial turmoil, but its presence at CinemaCon points to planting a flag and looking to convince theater chains that it’s in good shape with some exciting movies headed our way.

Among them, the latest ‘John Wick’ spin-off, ‘Ballerina,’ and the first official look at the third ‘Now You See Me’ entry are expected to be the biggest.

    TmJtO5movvVx2ISzod9XB2

It’s telling, though, that the Lionsgate presentation was part of an overall package with a state of the industry talk (featuring confirmation of name change from NATO to Cinema United with bonus Tom Cruise “we love movies” video, and a blend of self-congratulatory updates and concerns about the future of moviegoing as a whole) and fellow distributor Neon showing trailers for some of its own upcoming movies, including Mike Flanagan’s Tom Hiddleston-starring Stephen King adaptation ‘The Life of Chuck’ and Alison Brie/Dave Franco supernatural sci-fi horror ‘Together.’

After more talk about windows than a glazing company conference, it’s on with the Lionsgate show!

To absolutely no-one’s surprise, the presentation kicked off with an extended look at the latest tendril of the ‘John Wick’-verse, ‘Ballerina.

Starring Ana de Armas as a young woman trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma organization who sets out to seek revenge after her father’s death, the movie has Len Wiseman in the director’s chair, but is also produced by ‘Wick’ franchise overseer Chad Stahelski.

The new glimpse of the movie of course spotlights the considerable set-pieces. Because after all, what’s a ‘Wick’ movie without some good old fashioned fighting?

We also get a look at Gabriel Byrne in the movie, and Anjelica Huston’s director hiring a certain familiar assassin to take out de Armas’ Eve. Yep, as you’ll have seen in the recent trailer, Keanu Reeves’ titular Mr. Wick makes his presence felt alongside franchise veterans Lance Reddick (RIP) and Ian McShane.

    1YxLpoTP

In fact, this is mostly just an extended version of the last public look at the movie with added fisticuffs.

Wiseman and de Armas took the stage to talk up the new movie. De Armas spotlighted how she appreciated the discipline of ballet, which carried over into the stunts, which were the most physically demanding work she had to for a movie.

Lionsgate seems to be very confident in this one, claiming that they’ll be screening it to exhibition partners earlier than originally planned.

‘Ballerina’ hits theaters on June 6th.

The Stephen King adaptation, directed by ‘Hunger Games’ veteran Francis Lawrence, is a dystopian tale featuring a group of teenage boys competing in an annual contest known as “The Long Walk,” where they must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot.

Lawrence was joined by ‘Alien: RomulusDavid Jonsson and Mark Hamill (from some famous genre movies and TV) on stage to talk up the latest King joint.

According to the director, this is his favorite King tome. Jonsson, meanwhile, mentions that the actors walked for miles each day while shooting. At least it was a good workout!

Hamill, a CinemaCon newbie, plays the movie’s antagonist, so the cast apparently didn’t want to hang out with him until production was wrapped.

He says he’s wanted to work with Lawrence for a while and “there is nothing for me in ‘Hunger Games.’” ‘The Long Walk,’ he says, hit him like a ton of bricks but he appreciated getting pushed out of his comfort zone.

The trailer was shown, and we know that ‘The Long Walk’ will march into cinemas on September 12th.

Lawrence remained on stage, because next up was…

The latest ‘Hunger Games’ outing, once more directed by Lawrence, is the next prequel story, focused on a young Haymitch (as played by Woody Harrelson in the original trilogy).

Lawrence told the crowd that they’re casting now for a planned July shoot, and the director calls the color palette a “return to form” and that the new film takes place later in time than the last movie.

And again, it was his favorite book –– this time by ‘Games’ author Suzanne Collins.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunshine on the Reaping’ will be out on November 20th, 2026.

In between the bigger presentations was a video featuring other filmmakers talking up projects and more –– ‘A Simple Favor’s Paul Feig revealed he’d signed a first-look deal with the studios, while Luca Guadagnino appeared to hype his ‘American Psycho’ adaptation, which will go back to the book and features Scott Z. Burns writing. He’s casting it right now.

While ‘Ballerina’ continues the story, a new animated prequel to the original ‘Wick’ flick sets the clock back to before the story. Shannon Tindle of ‘Ultraman: Rising’ will direct.

But you were thinking Keanu Reeves’ character himself wouldn’t be back, think again –– Lionsgate has the actor and Stahelski developing a fifth main outing.

On the comedy front, there’s more work for Keanu Reeves…

Aziz Ansari’s film, which brought its first trailer, focused on a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves), who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen).

John Carney –– him of ‘Sing Street’ and ‘Once’ has more music on his mind with this Paul Rudd/Nick Jonas starring comedy about a wedding singer, a rock star, and the song that comes between them.

The third movie in the magician con-team franchise has Ruben Fleischer in the director’s chair, and he took the stage to announce that a fourth film (with Fleischer back behind the camera) and other spin-offs are in the works.

This third outing blends the classic cast with new recruits such as Rosamund Pike and Ariana Greenblatt. And for the first time since the first movie, Isla Fisher returns as Henley.

Oh, and it’s officially titled ‘Now You See Me, Now You Don’t.’

Fleischer brought a first look trailer with him, but also took time to explain that the vast majority of the magic tricks are done in camera. The story this time sees Jesse Eisenberg’s falling out with his buddies, and recruiting a new team featuring Justice Smith, Greenblatt and Dominic Sessa. They work with Morgan Freeman to rob Pike’s villainous character.

Once the trailer finished, Fleischer announced he’s also at work on another title for the studio, as well as a fourth ‘Now You See Me’ and possible spinoffs, but they’re keeping details on that in a bank vault for now.

‘Now You See Me, Now You Don’t’ will appear in theaters on November 14th.

    Finally?

    Hurry Up Tomorrow

The Boondock Saints’ director Trey Edward Shults brings this new drama, which stars The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in the story of an insomniac musician encounters a mysterious stranger, leading to a journey that challenges everything he knows about himself.

Shults said this is a hard movie to describe, soulful, and a journey.

Ortega took the stage to enthuse about working on the movie. She got the script and fell in love with a scene. She went in trying to get a small role and ended up getting the lead alongside the music star. Her character shifted a lot even during the production, it is quite an experience.

After the talent talks portion, the new trailer played. Trippy!

Absent, despite being hyped before it kicked off shooting last year, was ‘Michael,’ the Michael Jackson biopic. That might have something to do with the ongoing legal issues with one of the singer’s accusers.

    Preview:

    • Sony has made its big presentation to the 2025 CinemaCon crowd.
    • ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and ‘28 Years Later’ were among the major titles showcased.
    • The studio also showed footage from ‘Karate Kid: Legends.’

Theater owners are suffering right now, with takings down compared to last year, even with a solid start to 2025. So the cinema chain owners allied under what is now known as Cinema United –– formerly the National Association of Theater Owners –– will be looking for good news and plenty of potentially successful movies from the studios.

The mantra for the big cinema chains was “survive ‘till ’25,” and we’re here. Which is where CinemaCon comes in –– the big show in Vegas each year where the companies roll out stars and footage to tease what they have in the coming year.

First up was Sony, home of the ‘Spider-Verse‘ and the ‘Karate Kid‘, and we can expect both to show up somehow in the studio’s presentation.

With two and a half hours of show time to fill, the company kicked off like any student forced to give a verbal presentation –– talking about other things, including a sizzle reel of 2024 movies and lots of talk about HDR and distribution. Which is what you get when you’re at a show intended for theater owners.

But then the presentation proper began with Paul Rudd and Jack Black introducing their new comedic take on cult classic, ‘Anaconda,’ cracking a couple of jokes before segueing to welcome Sony movie boss Tom Rothman to the stage. Rothman began his opening remarks with a quip that Seth Rogen’s character in new Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio’ is based on him.

According to Rothman, the focus of Sony’s presentation will be the filmmakers who have been laboring to produce their new output, and what better choice to start with than Danny Boyle?

    28 Years Later

The long-anticipated third entry in the ‘28 Days Later’ franchise is also technically the launch of a new trilogy, with original duo Boyle and writer Alex Garland back behind the camera.

As the title suggests, it’s set years after the original movie set a virus that turns infected humans into rageful creatures upon London and the wider environs on England.

Boyle was there to introduce the premiere of the new trailer for the movie, which had a hard act to follow given the impressively impactful first teaser.

We’re introduced to a new world order for the country –– save havens are in place, where the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s Jamie and his family live. But an ill-feted hunting trip strands him in the infected-infested outside world. We also see and hear Ralph Fiennes, a rugged survivor. We’re also told that Cillian Murphy will be back for the new movie.

Fiennes is mentioned as also appearing in the follow-up, ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ and the director of that movie, Nia DaCosta also showed up on stage.

Boyle mentions that DaCosta is in production now on that movie, and that they’re looking for financing for the third. So if anyone has some quarters they can spare…

The first movie seethes onto screens on June 20th.

Phil Lord and directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson took the stage to announce that the third ‘Spider-Verse’ outing will be “bigger than the past two,” and a massive movie, in fact. So massive that it’ll be the first Sony animated pic to show on IMAX screens.

The movie, as you might have suspected from the cliffhanger ending of the second, picks up immediately, so no waiting to see what happens with Miles and co.

We also finally know when the next ‘Spider-Verse’ movie is landing… Prepare to wait until June 4th, 2027 to see this one. Yep, more than two years away!

That’s followed by a newcomer to the CinemaCon stage…

    Caught Stealing

This is Darren Aronofsky’s first trip to CinemaCon, and he’s here to promote ‘Caught Stealing,’ his new crime thriller ‘Caught Stealing.’

The first trailer for the movie –- featuring Austin Butler, Matt Smith (sporting a shock of blond/red mohawk hair), Zoe Kravitz, Regina King, Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio was showcased, giving a hint to the tone of this one.

‘Caught Stealing’ will be with us on August 29th.

    That was followed by…

    Resident Evil

Zach Cregger (director, 'Resident Evil') at CinemaCon 2025 for Sony Pictures at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on March 31, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Stewart Cook/Sony Pictures via Getty Images.

The next adaptation of the hugely popular video game franchise comes from ‘Barbarian’ director Zach Cregger, who is in the early stages of putting this one together. He promised it’ll be nothing like the Paul W.S. Anderson/Milla Jovovich movies, but still call it a ‘Wild Ride.’

    Here’s what he said:

“The movie I’m going to make is unlike any of the previous adaptations…It’s a story that follows one central protagonist from point A to point B as they descend into hell.”

Though only currently in pre-production, the movie has a September 18th, 2026 date on the books.

    qLkEAbCIEU1yfo0Cnpvlb2

And now the whistlestop tour of Sony’s slate continues with…

    A Big Bold Beautiful Journey

Stars Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie joined director Kogonada to talk up the fantastical romantic adventure, and debut the first trailer.

    Expect that on September 19th.

    VHro2LH9r5S1lTwNKVQ6S1

    A change of pace to…

    ‘GOAT’

The animated animals-playing-basketball movie is produced by sporting icon Steph Curry, and he appeared via video to introduce the movie, which will be out on February 13th, 2026.

Following ‘GOAT,’ it was the turn of Sony distribution chief Adam Bergerman to discuss release windows, which if we’re honest, is catnip to the CinemaCon crowd.

He also mentioned the company’s continued investment in anime, spotlighted by a clip from…

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle.’

From there back to more live-action matters, with word that a new ‘Insidious’ movie, co-produced by Blumhouse will be in theaters next year (August 21st, 2026, to be exact).

    xoWGMAlrmzTINkZm7ZmDJ4

That leads on to more horror…

I Know What you Did Last Summer

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' opens in theaters on July 18th, 2025.
‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ opens in theaters on July 18th, 2025.

For this one, it’s a case of Classic Story, New Kids as a new group of teens will try to cover up a road accident only to be stalked by a hook-handed killer.

We’re promised the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson.

It’ll be out on July 18th.

    yhFQeRSSB5bA8FWaAWylH6

After that, the studio’s team rattled through other titles we can expect in the coming months and year, including a third ‘Jumanji’ in 2026, Taika Waititi’s robotic fable ‘Klara and the Sun’ (which stars Jenna Ortega), ‘Grandgear’, the mysterious new movie from ‘Godzilla: Minus One’ director Takashi Yamazaki, produced by J.J. Abrams, and Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Starship Troopers’ adaptation –– which as previously promised will not remake the Paul Verhoeven movie, but instead be a fresh take on Robert Heinlein’s novel.

All that, and official confirmation that Wes Ball’s ‘Zelda’ movie is in the works, with a March 26th, 2027 release.

    kQaucbdN0NqBpCyxzOI8R3

But it wasn’t over, as another big title needed a big introduction…

     ‘Karate Kid: Legends

Ben Wang (L) and Ralph Macchio, from 'Karate Kid: Legends', at CinemaCon 2025 for Sony Pictures at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on March 31, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Sony Pictures via Getty Images.

The next iteration of the ‘Karate Kid’ movie franchise blends the classic (Ralph Macchio as student-turned-sensei Daniel LaRusso) with the reboot (Jackie Chan’s Sifu Han) as the two teachers combine forces to tutor the new Karate Kid, Ben Wang’s Li Fong.

    ht8azNjV

A live karate demonstration gave way to Macchio and Wang on stage, who talked up the new movie, and showed a couple of clips and the first trailer.

The movie itself is in cinemas on May 30th.

    And now… the big finish!

    Spider-Man 4

The latest Spidey outing brings Tom Holland swinging back to our screens for Sony’s collaboration with Marvel and the MCU proper.

With Destin Daniel Cretton taking over directorial duties, he was on stage to hype the film.

But we also heard from star Holland, who appeared via video from the set of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to extol how the new ‘Spider-Man’ will be a “fresh start” for the franchise.

And that’s seemingly confirmed by the title: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Which makes some sense given the world-memory-wiping antics of ‘No Way Home.’

    It’ll land on July 31st, 2026.

    awhHMJKDYrfBPpvA5aIUj6

But wait! There’s more. Tom Rothman returns to the stage to talk about Sam Mendes’ four Beatles biopics, one each focused on John, Paul George and Ringo (kids, ask your grandparents).

It’s being touted as a four-movie cinematic event.

The bold idea for this one is four separate movies, each one focusing on a different band member’s perspective, all shot across one year and then released together in April 2028, to make, as Rothman touts, “the first bingeable theatrical experience.”

And here comes the confirmation of the official cast…

'The Beatles - A Four-Film Cinematic Event', directed by Sam Mendes. (L to R) Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), Paul Mescal (Paul McCartney), Barry Keoghan (Ringo Starr), and Joseph Quinn (George Harrison). In theaters April 2028. Photo by: John Russo.

Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney (somewhere Ridley Scott is seething), Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. All four were on stage to do the Beatles bow.

Thus ends the Sony presentation. Some hefty hitters there, and a good mix of horror and Spider-action. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.

(L to R) Bob Persichetti (director, 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse'), Justin K. Thompson (director, 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse'), Phil Lord (producer, 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse'), Nia DaCosta (director, '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple') and Tyree Dillihay (director, 'GOAT') at CinemaCon 2025 for Sony Pictures at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on March 31, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
