  • HBO Confirms ‘Game of Thrones’ to Return in 2019

After months of speculation about when the final season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere, we finally have an official (if still pretty vague) answer: HBO confirmed on Thursday that the hit fantasy series will return sometime in 2019.

That’s in keeping with what the cast and crew alluded to in recent interviews, acknowledging that a delayed production schedule (thanks in part to Kit Harington and Rose Leslie’s upcoming nuptials) necessitated pushing the premiere date back. Now, the premium cable outlet has made that assumption official, though of course, we still don’t have a concrete premiere date (or even a rough timeline, like earlier or later in the year).

What we do know, however, is that the final six episodes of the series — all directed by veterans of the show — will be more than worth the wait. Even former stars of the series are raving about the amazing conclusion, which provoked the cast to weep and give a standing ovation at a recent table read. We have a feeling that fans will have a similar reaction once the show wraps.

Now, we just have to wait for 2019 to hurry up and get here already. Keep watch here for more information about season eight of “Game of Thrones” as it becomes available.

  • The ‘Minecraft’ Movie Lands 2019 Release Date

minecraft, minecraft movie, mojang, release date, script, rob mcelhenneyFans whose excitement has been building for the upcoming “Minecraft” movie will have to wait a while longer for the flick: Studio Warner Bros. and game developer Mojang revealed on Monday that the film won’t be hitting theaters until 2019.

In an announcement posted on the Mojang website, company COO Vu Bui said that the movie would make its debut on May 24, 2019.

“Yes, that might seem like a long time away,” Bui wrote, “but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?”

There’s been no word yet on just what the plot of the flick will be (and Mojang’s announcement coyly blocked out the screenwriter’s name on a photo of the script, seen above), though it’s secured a quirky director: Rob McElhenney, the co-creator and star of long-running FX sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” McElhenney has already promised that the film will be “strange and wonderful,” a combination that should be familiar to “It’s Always Sunny” fans.

The “Minecraft” movie is being modeled on the success of “The LEGO Movie,” another kid-friendly property that had no previous narrative structure, but found box office success — and critical love — anyway. There are already a bunch of “LEGO” spinoff and sequel projects in the works, and the folks behind “Minecraft”‘s foray onto the big screen no doubt hope their massively popular game translates into a similarly popular movie franchise, too.

We’ll have to wait until 2019 to find out if their plan pans out. Stay tuned for more intel about the film as it becomes available.

  • ‘Wicked’ Movie (Finally) Gets 2019 Release Date

58th Annual Tony Awards - ShowMore than 12 years after it hit Broadway, a movie version of the musical smash “Wicked” is finally coming to the big screen, and has an official release date.

Studio Universal announced on Thursday that “Wicked” would hit movie theaters on December 20, 2019, a release date that’s right in the thick of awards season. And with the show’s success on Broadway — it won three Tonys in 2004, and has grossed more than $1 billion since its debut — producers of the flick likely have Oscar in their sights as well.

The movie will be directed by Stephen Daldry (who’s been nominated for four Oscars, and won a Tony for directing the musical version of his film “Billy Elliot”), who joined the project way back in 2012. Producer Marc Platt, who also produced the stage version of “Wicked,” will return in that role as well.

“Wicked” is based on the “Wizard of Oz” prequel novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire, and was adapted for the stage by book writer Winnie Holzman and famed lyricist-composer Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Pippin”), who took home a Tony for his work on the show. Holzman and and Schwartz will collaborate on the film’s screenplay.

As for just who will star, Idina Menzel, who won the Best Actress Tony for playing Elphaba in the original Broadway production, admitted in an interview earlier this year that she was probably too old for the role now. Still, we’d love to see her and fellow star Kristin Chenoweth pop up in the production in some capacity. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ With Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg Coming in 2019

indiana jones, harrison ford, steven spielberg, indiana jones 5After years of radio silence from the “Indiana Jones” filmmakers — and some juicy rumors about a possible franchise reboot starring Chris PrattDisney has decided to stick with the original one-two punch of Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, and has officially announced that the duo will reunite for “Indiana Jones 5.”

The as-yet-untitled flick already has a release date in place, and will hit theaters on July 19, 2019. There’s no word on other casting (could Pratt perhaps pop up in a supporting role, in a wink to those red-hot rumors?), and no plot has been revealed just yet, but still, this is big news, and we can’t wait to see Ford don Jones’s iconic fedora once again.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, in a press release. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

It’s been almost eight years since the last “Indy” flick hit theaters, though “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” wasn’t exactly a critic or fan favorite. Still, anytime Ford and Spielberg get together, it’s exciting, and we’re optimistic that Disney can breathe some much-needed new life into this franchise like they did with “Star Wars,” which was due for a creative resurgence after the much-maligned prequels. Our fingers are crossed that “Indy 5” will do for the “Jones” series what “The Force Awakens” did for “Star Wars.”

  • ‘Transformers’ 5, 6, and 7 Get Release Dates

There will be at least three more movies in the money-printing “Transformers” series, with studio Paramount announcing on Friday release dates for the fifth, sixth, and seventh installments in the franchise.

Fans of the series should be pleased, since they’re guaranteed a new film in the franchise every year for at least three years, beginning in 2017. “Transformers 5” is slated for release on June 23, 2017, followed by “Transformers 6” on June 8, 2018, and then “Transformers 7” on June 28, 2019.

Like Marvel and DC before them, it seems that Paramount is rolling out an ambitious “Transformers” schedule in an effort to establish itself as an anticipated annual presence at the summer box office. The series will face some big competition from the DC camp and Warner Bros. when “Transformers 5” opens against “Wonder Woman” next summer. It will then go head-to-head with “Godzilla 2” (another Warner Bros. property) when “Transformers 6” hits in 2018.

The first four “Transformers” flicks have earned a combined $3.8 billion at the worldwide box office, and Paramount no doubt hopes that there’s plenty more where that came from. Director Michael Bay will be back at the helm for his fifth outing with the franchise, though he’s said it will be his last “Transformers” flick. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” star Mark Wahlberg is also set to return.
