  • Golden Globes 2015: The 12 Things You’re Most Likely to See at This Year’s Ceremony

Golden Globe StatuettesA month from now, are you even going to remember who won the Golden Globes? And should you? After all, it’s not like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the little group of entertainment journalists who give out the prizes, have loads of credibility, either as Oscar and Emmy prognosticators or as discerning film and TV critics.

But they do put on a heck of an awards show. This year’s gala, the HFPA’s 72nd, boasts a pair of popular and funny emcees, a glamorous gathering of TV and movie stars, a tribute to a certain Hollywood royal, and the possibility that the event’s free-flowing alcohol and relaxed vibes will lead to something spontaneous and memorable happening. Oh yeah, and Sunday’s proceedings will also offer a small hint at what could win at the Oscars in February. Here, then, are some things likely to catch your eye at the 2015 Golden Globes ceremony.

The Tina and Amy Show. This is the third and, alas, apparently the last year that Ms. Fey and Ms. Poehler will co-host the ceremony. Expect them to go out with a bang, sparing few with their sweetly-delivered barbs, since they don’t have to worry about being invited back.

More of the same from Ricky Gervais. After all, the HFPA is letting previous three-time host Gervais come back as a presenter, despite his well-established tendency to insult the powerful and hijack the show for his own purposes. You at home will be laughing, even if those in the Beverly Hilton ballroom do not.

A-listers reading cue cards. Along with Gervais, plenty of top-ranking entertainers will be happy to serve as presenters at the Globes, where no one will be writing awkward jokes into their remarks like at the Oscars. Those who’ve agreed to appear so far include Amy Adams, Adrien Brody, Robert Downey Jr., Anna Faris, Kevin Hart, Salma Hayek, Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Pratt, Channing Tatum, Lily Tomlin, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Frasier’s daughter. Miss Golden Globes, the gowned gal who hands out the trophies and escorts the winners offstage, is almost always a celebrity’s daughter. This year, it’s 22-year-old Greer Grammer, star of “Awkward” and daughter of Kelsey. Keep an eye on her; after all, past Miss GGs have included Melanie Griffith and Laura Dern.

A coronation for George Clooney. After all, like Jack Nicholson or Clark Gable before him, Clooney is pretty much acknowledged by one and all to be the king of Hollywood. So why not make it official? On Sunday, he’ll pick up the Cecil B. DeMille award, the HFPA’s lifetime achievement prize. Isn’t the 53-year-old a little young for that? After all, just 20 years ago, before the 1994 debut of “ER,” hardly anyone knew who he was. (Though we shouldn’t discount his earlier career, a decade spent doing things like guest roles on “The Golden Girls” and starring in horror spoof “Return of the Killer Tomatoes!”) Still, he’s a big deal now. And a good sport, judging by the way he canoodled with Poehler during a comedy bit at a previous Globes ceremony. Over the years, the HFPA has nominated him in nine different categories; the organization’s official press release about the DeMille award observes, “At this point, he could only top this if he were to write a song or have a sex change.” Let’s hope not.

Newcomers among the TV winners. The Globe voters like to get out in front of the Emmys when it comes to being the first to recognize new shows. So look for Gina Rodriguez to take home a trophy for “Jane the Virgin” and Viola Davis (who’s a newcomer to primetime, at least) to grab one for “How to Get Away With Murder.”

Newcomers among the movie winners — sort of. Director Richard Linklater has gone Globe-less throughout his quarter-century career, but that’s likely to end with the hosannas over “Boyhood.” Watch for that film’s supporting actress nominee, Patricia Arquette, to pick up her first Globe, too. Of course, “Boyhood”‘s big rival, “Birdman,” could also grab a few prizes, including a Best Actor award for the previously Globe-deprived Michael Keaton.

Jokes about “The Interview.” Nobody came off looking noble in that fiasco, so there’ll be plenty of wisecracks to go around.

Food envy. Potential Globe honorees had better remember to bring some dental floss; you don’t want to go up on stage and on camera with black Tuscan kale from the awards banquet’s second course stuck in your teeth. This year, you can watch as Globe guests nibble on a three-course meal consisting of a modified Waldorf salad with a lemon emulsion dressing, a surf-and-turf course of filet mignon and Arctic char (served with a potato croquette, a fondue of heirloom cherries and tomatoes, and the aforementioned kale), and a triple dessert course of cassis lemon cheesecake, chocolate alliance salted caramel, and hazelnut dacquoise. You know, in case you wanted to duplicate the menu at home.

A moment of silence. Many greats from the worlds of both TV and film passed away last year, probably too many for the show to do justice to them all in the annual “In Memoriam” montage. Hold your applause ’til the end, folks.

Plugs for “Parks and Recreation.” You think NBC is going to miss a chance to promote the final season of Poehler’s cult-fave sitcom? C’mon, people, it’s your last chance to discover this show.

Drunken revelry. There’s never as much of it as we at home would want to see. Still, hope springs eternal that the Globes’ keep-refilling-those-goblets policy will pay off in an on-camera slap fight or wardrobe malfunction. Heck, we’d settle for a loud belch.

  • Netflix Knows You’ve Been Accessing Foreign Content Illegally

International viewers who have previously found ways around Netflix‘s restrictions on certain content may have their work cut out for them from now on: The streaming service has reportedly been fixing vulnerabilities in an effort to cut illegal access to its U.S.-exclusive content from foreign countries.

According to CNN Money, restrictions from country to country are in place thanks to licensing agreements with movie and television studios. But viewers abroad have been able to trick Netflix servers in the past by using a virtual private network, or VPN, to obscure their location and gain access to internationally-blocked content.

Unfortunately for them, Netflix has caught on to that trick, and has begun blocking more international access in recent days, with users reporting on social media sites and Reddit that their VPNs no longer work with the service. Netflix claims that its terms of service have not been altered, but there appears to be some sort of deliberate action on its part to curb the illegal streaming, and CNN Money reports that that’s because studios are complaining that their copyright agreements with Netflix have been violated.

“Our policies have not recently changed,” Netflix spokesman Marlee Moseley told CNN Money. “Virtually crossing borders to use Netflix is a violation of our terms of use because of content licensing restrictions, and we employ standard measures to prevent this kind of use.”

It seems that people who want to watch things illegally will always find a way — but in this case, Netflix may no longer be an option.

  • Here Are the 2014 PGA Awards Film and Television Nominees

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.

Among the films in the running for the top prize — known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — are “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Boyhood,” “Foxcatcher,” “Gone Girl,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler,” “The Theory of Everything,” and “Whiplash.”

But it’s the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. “Selma,” “Unbroken,” and “Into the Woods” all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies’ Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.

  • Anthrax is on the’Game of Thrones’ Mixtape

Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax Perform At The Gibson Amphitheatre
Game of Thrones” is already pretty metal, what with all the swords and dragons and George R.R. Martin’s beard, but the mixtape for next season will really take things to a new level. Last season’s mixtape, “Catch the Throne,” relied primarily on hip hop artists for songs that riffed on “GoT” themes and used samples from the show.

However, this year things are gonna get a little hairy. Anthrax’s Scott Ian, whose impressive goatee rivals GRRM’s, has revealed that his band will be contributing a song to this year’s “Catch the Throne” mixtape, as per Facebook.

Scott Ian told Metal Hammer Magazine that writer, executive producer, and showrunner DB Weiss is a big fan of Anthrax. He said, “I asked Dan, ‘Hey man, what would be the possibility of us recording the drums for the next album in the throne room?’ Like we bring a mobile studio and set up the drums, mic everything and record in here. He says, ‘Oh my God, that would be the sickest thing ever. We know the guys that can make that possible.’

“All of you out there who watch ‘Game Of Thrones,’ much like me, probably think it’s a very metal TV show. And just know: the reason for that is that one of the creators is a huge metalhead.”

Anthrax’s next album will come out in 2015. “Game of Thrones” will return on this spring.

  • New Year’s Resolutions for TV Characters

Sansa Stark at her wedding in Game of Thrones

Sure, that sort of behavior makes for great drama and comedy, but it also makes for messy lives. If our favorite TV characters really want to clean up their acts, they’ll take our advice and adopt these custom-tailored New Year‘s resolutions.

Sansa Stark (“Game of Thrones”): I will not accept any wedding invitations.

Mindy Lahiri (“The Mindy Project”): I will remember that life is not a romantic comedy, and everything doesn’t turn out the way it does for Meg Ryan.

Lisa Simpson (“The Simpsons”): After 25 years, I will finally pass the second grade.

Don Draper (“Mad Men”): Maybe seeing Bert Cooper dancing down the hallway after his death is a sign that I shouldn’t drink so much.

Saul Goodman (formerly of “Breaking Bad,” soon to be seen on “Better Call Saul”): I will find a better class of clientele. Maybe just white-collar criminals.

The cast of “Scandal”: We will stop mixing work and our social lives.

Frank and Claire Underwood (“House of Cards”): Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.

Alicia Florrick (“The Good Wife”): Me, too.

Fitz (“Scandal”): Oh, one more for me: no more presidential phone sex. You never know who’s listening…

Jane Villanueva (“Jane the Virgin”): I’ll go through with the malpractice suit against the gynecologist whose epic blunder left me pregnant, even if she is the sister of hunky, wealthy Rafael. Or at least I’ll make Rafael cough up for daycare.

Jonah (“Silicon Valley”): I will never get into a driverless, computer-controlled car again.

The cast of “Orange Is the New Black”: Is it too late to get time off for good behavior?

Paige (“The Americans”): I know my parents are weird and secretive, but I will not look too hard for the skeletons in their closet, since I might be super creeped out by what I find.

Sheldon Cooper (“The Big Bang Theory”): I will interact more with lesser human beings, and I won’t always bring disinfectant wipes.

Jules Cobb (“Cougar Town”): I’ll stop drinking so much red wine and switch to something less heavy-duty. Like white wine.

Will Graham (“Hannibal”): I will try to get some sleep, though I’ll surely be troubled by nightmares.

Jack Larsen (“Stalker”): Um, maybe I should stop being a stalker? Or at least appearing to be one?

Sterling Archer (“Archer”): You know that whole “Miami Vice” thing we did throughout last season? I’ll forget it if you viewers will.

John Thackery (“The Knick”). Imagine how much more brilliant and trailblazing a surgeon I could be if I weren’t high on liquid cocaine all the time. Maybe I could have invented transplant surgery in 1900 if I weren’t so busy probing the spaces between my toes for injectable veins.

The extended Braverman clan (“Parenthood”): When we have our series finale at the end of January, we won’t make you cry… too much.

The cast of “Parks and Recreation”: Neither will we… oh, who are we kidding? You’ll weep as hard as if Li’l Sebastian died all over again.

Valerie Cherish (“The Comeback”): I’ll be back.

Robert Crawley, Lord Grantham (“Downton Abbey”): I will consult with my family before embarking on any new business ventures, since I’m clearly hopeless at such things. Although that American fellow, Ponzi, seems like a successful money manager…

Dowager Countess Violet Crawley (“Downton Abbey”): I shan’t be making any resolutions, as I do not require any self-improvement. Though I can think of others who do.
