  • ‘Practical Magic’ Is a Two-Hour Identity Crisis: Podcast

    Practical Magic 1998, Sandra Bullock, Nicole KidmanWitches (played by box office royalty Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman), romance, a family curse, and sisters with an immutable bond — on the outside, that’s everything one would need to cast a spell of cinematica perfectum. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

    Yes, the CAN’T WAIT! crew grabbed their broomsticks (and tequila) and dove headlong into the 1998 romantic comedy / drama / thriller / supernatural drama / romance / [insert sixth genre here] “Practical Magic,” a movie that struggles for an hour and forty-five minutes to figure out exactly what it is, then leaves you wondering what, exactly, you just watched. But hey, the movie isn’t without its redeeming qualities — they’re just few and far between. Topics discussed include Bullock and Kidman unconvincingly playing teenagers, deadly curses with more patience than Mahatma Gandhi, Camilla Belle‘s eyebrows, and a town where it’s OK for kids to yell profanity at other kids, as long as those kids are witches.

    Next week we’ll be watching and discussing Tony’s pick, the 1993 career suicide machine “Super Mario Bros.” No one is happy about — except Tony.

  • ‘Deep Blue Sea’ Is the Guilty Pleasure You Need Right Now: Podcast

    LL Cool J in DEEP BLUE SEA“Deep Blue Sea” has everything: shape-changing genius sharks, maddeningly convoluted plot points, comic relief from LL Cool J, water-related puns, and more shockingly brutal deaths than all six seasons of “Game of Thrones” combined. OK, that last one’s a stretch, but you get the point.

    This week, the CAN’T WAIT! crew dives into Renny Harlin‘s 1999 aquatic misstep classic, which stars a bunch of people whose careers were likely stifled by the movie’s severe lack of box office success. (Except for Samuel L. Jackson, whose death in the movie made him a star all over again.) Topics discussed include cartoon-like CG sharks, the egregious misappropriation of science, favorite death scenes, and uncovering the real hero of the movie (spoiler alert: it’s not the bird).

    Next week, we’ll be discussing 1998’s genre-confused witch tale, “Practical Magic,” starring Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Stockard Channing, and Diane Wiest.

Other topics of discussion include questionable casting choices, lovable toad dogs, and the very minor role real science plays in the movie.

  • ‘The Craft’ Is a Wicked ’90s Time Capsule That’ll Make You Hate Los Angeles: Podcast

    THE CRAFT“We are those ‘The Craft‘-loving weirdos, mister.” Well, half of us are, the other half want to invoke Manon and get back the hour and 40 minutes spent watching the movie.

    Tim picked the (apparently divisive) ’90s teen witch thriller, which stars perhaps the most ’90s cast ever assembled: Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Skeet Ulrich. Topics discussed include obvious wigs, Catholic schools with no rules, terrible special effects, terrible parents, Breckin Meyer‘s stellar douche acting, and the hell-on-Earth that is Los Angeles. (Seriously, there are a lot of trash fires and snake-loving ne’er-do-wells in this movie’s version of L.A.)

    Next week’s movie, “John Carter,” comes courtesy of special guest Drew Taylor, who will somehow try to convince us that watching a loincloth-clad Taylor Kitsch learn how to battle aliens in low gravity for two hours and 12 minutes is time well spent.

    Yes, we’re tackling Tony’s pick, and by “tackling” we mean “beating to a bloody pulp.” Among the topics discussed are: the JCVD school of acting, jokes that aren’t jokes, unsettling nudity, high kicks & high splits, and how “Timecop” — despite all its shortcomings — somehow managed to predict a Trump presidency. (Why isn’t that last point making headlines?! Oh, right. Because this movie is terrible.)

    TWO WEEKS NOTICEIs it “Two Weeks Notice” or “Two Weeks’ Notice”? When you live in a world of oblivious billionaires and binge-eating activist lawyers, who cares?!

    This week, we watched the Sandra Bullock / Hugh Grant rom-com, “Two Weeks Notice.” Sure, the title is technically missing an apostrophe, but nothing is missing from the undeniable chemistry between the movie’s stars. Among other topics discussed: too much Chinese food, diarrhea theme songs, mystery characters, and confusing AF circus parties. Maybe one day all the questions we have about this movie will be answered by its inevitable, completely unnecessary straight-to-Netflix sequel.

    This week, Tim Hayne, Phil Pirrello, Rachel Horner, and Tony Maccio talk about 1992’s most disquieting, lactation-inducing, politically incorrect thriller, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.” Directed by Curtis Hanson (yes, that Curtis Hanson), “Cradle” follows the exploits of a vengeful nanny named Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay) and her hapless, far less interesting victims: asthmatic mom (Annabella Sciorra), Lloyd Braun from “Seinfeld” / dad (Matt McCoy), adorable little girl (Madeline Zima), sassy redhead / nosy best friend (Julianne Moore!), and mentally challenged Ernie Hudson. This movie works hard to make its audience feel as uncomfortable as humanly possible, and, for the most part, it truly succeeds. Sinister, nipple-exposed breastfeeding, anyone?

    This week, the Moviefone crew (Tim Hayne, Rachel Horner, Phil Pirrello, and Tony Maccio) couldn’t wait to talk about the greatest Patrick Swayze movie ever released on May 19, 1989, including its mysterious bouncer subculture roots, nonsensical fight sequences, and the curious, crime-riddled town of Jasper, MO (which could be a real town, because it has a sign and everything; and it doesn’t look anything like southern California). The movie has a lot of issues, most of which we point out in the process of declaring our love for this R-rate piece of ’80s perfection.

    In addition to unsolicited medical diagnoses, we dreamcast a “Road House” reboot, which could (and does) go in some pretty unexpected directions. Not interested in “Road House”? Fair enough. For you, we offer up a few recommendations to get you through the weekend.

  • The Awful Truth About ‘The Wedding Planner’: Podcast

    The Wedding Planner (2001) podcastOh, “The Wedding Planner.” In theory, you’re a wonderful piece of J.Lo rom-com nostalgia. In fact, however, you’re far more terrible than anyone could have ever remembered.

    If you haven’t guessed by now, this week, Tim Hayne, Tony Maccio, Phil Pirrello, and Rachel Horner sink their teeth into Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey‘s 2001 romantic comedy hit, “The Wedding Planner,” and gnaw it to its misguided, nonsensical, terrible-Italian-accented bone. For the record, they really wanted to like this movie — you could say they planned to like it — Rachel and Tim, especially. Alas, much like 50 percent of marriages in America, this movie was doomed from the start.Tyra Banks AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL rooting for youAre there redeeming qualities? Sure, but they’re few and far between. Judy Greer, for instance, and Kathy Najimy‘s “boss” wig — but you’ll have to listen to the podcast for the rest.
