Epic Universe is Universal Orlando’s fourth theme park, not far from Universal Studios Orlando. It houses five brand new lands, including Celestial Park, How To Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, Super Nintendo World, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.

Epic Universe’s theming is inspired by the heavens, stars, and constellations, and once guests step through the towering Emerald Gate and Chronos device, they will find themselves in Celestial Park. From there, they will be able to access the four other portals leading them into various lands.

Just through the fiery red swirling portal is the Isle of Berk – a land where Vikings and dragons live in harmony. Themed to DreamWorks’ animated feature ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ franchise, this land in Epic Universe will transport you to a world that has only existed in animation – until now. There are plenty to do in Berk, including three rides, one live show, meet and greet with Toothless, plenty of food options, and of course, you’ll spot characters from the film roaming around the village.

Once inside Berk, you’re greeted by towering Viking and Dragon statues emerging out of the water. The larger-than-life decor of this land will make you forget that you’re at a theme park. Aside from its attractions and live entertainment, there are 30 animatronic dragons spread throughout Berk. From napping baby dragons to the massive Snow Wraith ready to blast you with its icy breath.

The Attractions In Isle of Berk

Out of all the lands within Epic Universe, the Isle of Berk houses the most attractions. It has three rides – Hiccup’s Wing Glider, Dragon Racer’s Rally, and Fyre Drill. Each is unique, has colorful outdoor line queues, and fits right into the world of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’.

Hiccup’s Wing Glider rides like a classic rollercoaster, with just enough thrills without taking the riders upside-down. As the coaster moves out of the loading station, you’ll hear Hiccup speaking to Toothless, “Hey Toothless, we’ve got to prepare for launch”. The coaster takes you right past animatronics of Hiccup and Toothless before Toothless launches your Winged Flying Machine to soar through the Isle.

The ride track will take you through the entire land and over water so you can get a fantastic view of Berk. All is well until you come across some Gronckle eggs hatching. The winged machine quickly makes its getaway by launching at full speed. As the coasters soar past the eggs, the score from ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ plays, and you get the sensation of what it’s like to fly on the back of a dragon.

The official synopsis for Hiccup’s Wing Gliders:

“From Hiccup’s workshop comes his latest contraption: a winged flying machine that launches aspiring Dragon Riders into the air, swooping and soaring and encountering Hiccup and Toothless along the way. Get ready to board Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, a fun coaster that invites Vikings to prove they’re brave enough to speed through the sky with dragons.”

Dragon Racer’s Rally takes riders in a circular motion up to 67 feet in the air before gliding back down in a circular motion. What makes this ride unique is that each rider has control over their own vehicle’s “wings”. Alternating them back and forth will allow your vehicle to spin 360 degrees, which means as the ride is gliding in a circular motion, you are also spinning and going upside down. The wings are heavier than expected and can take some getting used to to get your vehicle to spin. If you prefer a milder experience, hold the wings steady and your vehicle will not spin. This is a short ride and a fun way to experience flying like a Dragon.

The official synopsis for Dragon Racer’s Rally:

“The sport of dragon racing is a celebrated pastime on the Isle of Berk. At Dragon Racer’s Rally, Berk’s new Vikings can practice aerobatic maneuvers and high-speed barrel rolls on a Viking-made dragonriding trainer. You’ll need these high-flying, gravity-defying, swooping and soaring skills if you hope to become a champion dragon racer.”

Fyre Drill is the perfect way to beat the heat. It’s an interactive boat battle, and in Viking fashion, teaching you how to douse flames or foes with water. This is an all-ages ride with no drops, twists, or turns. Each boat is equipped with water cannons. As the boat moves through large wooden targets, your goal is to hit the targets, but there’s no rule about also soaking the other boats and its riders with your water cannon. The ride is slow moving, so there is no way to avoid getting wet on this ride.

The official synopsis for Fyre Drill:

“With fire-breathing dragons everywhere, villagers have to be prepared. Viking twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut have transformed Berk’s Fyre Skööl into a watery, interactive boat battle at sea. Board your ship in Fyre Drill and blast your water cannons at flame-like targets – and the occupants of every other boat – to out-soak other Vikings.”

There are several dining options in Isle of Berk including the Mead Hall, the Spit Fyre Grill, and Holligan’s Grog & Gruel. Each of the food locations offers quick service and a variety of dishes.

The Mead Hall is the tallest building in the land, and its entrance doors are over 16 feet tall. Here you’ll find larger platters of meats perfect for sharing, seafood, sandwiches, desserts, drinks, and of course, mead. There are also two vegan options available: the Nordic Harvest Salad and Valka’s Vegan Burger with an ancient grain patty. This is where you’ll find the adorable fish-shaped dessert made of chocolate mousse on a bed of cereal crumbles.

Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel is where you can find the Instagramable Dragon Fire Chicken Spire mac-and-cheese cone. These huge bread cones are filled to the brim with creamy mac and cheese and toppings such as BBQ pulled pork or pulled chicken with hot honey. Spit Fyre Grill is where you’ll find various bowls featuring steak, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. There’s also a vegan bowl option with kale spring mix, bean salad, vegan feta, with a mango and mint vinaigrette.

Amongst the rides, food, and character meet and greets, there is also the live show called “The Untrainable Dragon, ” unlike any theme park stage show. First debuted in Universal Studios Beijing, the Vikings encountered a new troublesome dragon causing mayhem in the village. Hiccup, Toothless, Gobber, and Astrid must find a way to calm the dragon before it causes more destruction.

This show will feature large dragon puppets, singing, dancing, projection, smoke, and lighting effects. Best of all, Hiccup and Toothless will soar over the audience. It’s truly stunning to see Hiccup on the back of the massive Toothless animatronic, with a wingspan of 27 feet, breaking through the fog, high in the theater. The show runs about 20 minutes and is pure entertainment.

You can also meet Hiccup and Toothless, located near the theater for “The Untrainable Dragon”. This is probably the most sought after experience in Isle of Berk so if you want to meet Toothless, make sure to prioritize and plan because the line can get up to over 2 hours long.

The Isle of Berk immerse guests into the world of Dreamwork’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. Aside from all the attractions and entertainment, it’s fun to walk around to try to find all 30 animatronic dragons. There are interactive towers placed all around Berk that’ll play a sound or mist effect once you interact with it. You’ll undoubtedly run into Ruffnut, Tuffnut, and Gobber, as they usually roam around the land. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for adorable baby dragons who will play a game of “Toothless Says”.

Explore the world of ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Walking through the towering wand-topped portal, you are transported to 1920s Paris. This land has incredible design, from the cobblestone streets to the tall buildings of Place Cachée to the towering Phoenix arch.

This land is filled with interactive activities, hidden in shop windows. To unlock the magic, you will need an interactive wand, which is available at Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique. This is where you can find the new second-generation wands with a more powerful connectivity, and features light and sound haptics to give you a more unique spell casting experience.

Aside from interactive wand spells, there are also character interactions in magical Paris. You can find a live street band playing, alongside the magical creature Plume the Puffskein. The stylish wand designer Cosme Acajor roams near her storefront, and students from various wizarding schools add to the overall atmosphere.

Battle at the British Ministry of Magic

The main attraction in this land is the “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry” ride. For the first time, guests will be able to experience the Métro-Floo as they walk through the green tunnel. Stepping through the mist, you’ll find yourself at the atrium of the British Ministry of Magic.

The official synopsis for “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry” is:

“Travel by Métro-Floo from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic™ where Dolores Umbridge™ is about to stand trial. Board a lift and join Harry, Ron, and Hermione as you journey deep into the Ministry’s many departments. Thrilling adventure, fantastic beasts, and unexplored mystery await in Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry™.”

This ride queue is the most impressive one at Epic Universe. As you come out of the Métro-Floo tunnels, it feels like you’re swallowed by the massive atrium of the British Ministry of Magic, with its tall ceiling and the multiple floors of office buildings that overlook the Fountain of Magical Brethren. The sight is truly breathtaking. Proceeding through the line queue, you’ll walk through the Magical Archives library, the Aurors’ locker room, and Dolores Umbridge’s office.

The wait for this attraction is likely to be very long, but it will give you time to take in all the details this line queue has to offer. As you walk through Umbridge’s office, you’ll find her house-elf Higgledy explaining a little about Umbridge’s trial.

Once you’ve reached the end of the line queue, you will board the magical omnidirectional lift as it makes its way to Umbridge’s trial. As she attempts to escape, the lift, along with Harry, Hermione, and Ron, gives chase throughout the Ministry. The ride has a combination of screens and practice sets, similar to “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” but on a grander scale. Even though this ride isn’t as thrilling as Monsters Unchained, what sets this ride apart is immersive storytelling and the detailed animatronics found throughout. For Harry Potter fans, this is a must.

    Le Cirque Arcanus

Head straight from the Phoenix Arch, and you’ll find “Le Cirque Arcanus”, A live show featuring cirque acts and fantastic beasts in large puppetry form. The magic begins as soon as you enter the red show tent because the line queue and the theater inside are much bigger than they look outside, similar to the effect of the charmed tent used by Hermione and Ginny after the World Cup Final.

During the pre-show, you are introduced to Ringmaster Skender and his assistant, Gwenlyn. Wanting to save his failing circus, he has stolen Newt Scamander’s suitcase and wants to use the magical creatures inside to draw a crowd. When Gwenlyn accidentally lets out a Demiguise. This pre-show includes magical surprises like Newtscander’s suitcase traveling through the wall into Skender’s office, and how the Demiguise crawls out of the suitcase, just like we’ve seen Scamander do in the movies.

The main show takes place inside a 550-seat theater, featuring various circus acts. The rest of the show takes place inside Scamander’s suitcase. Yes, the entire stage transforms into the inside of the suitcase, and the transition was magical to watch. As Gwenlyn looks for the Demiguise, she encounters many other magical creatures, including a very large Zouwu and the adorable Mooncalf. With special effects and intricate set designs, guests will feel surrounded by the magic of the Wizarding World.

There is plenty to taste while you’re in the Wizarding World. Quick service dining options include Cafe L’air De La Sirène, where you can find the delectable Butterbeer crepe, Le Gobelet Noir for drinks and hearty entrees, and Bar Moonshine for a refreshing beverage.

Cafe L’air De La Sirène and Le Gobelet Noir are where you can find the most seating and be tucked away in air conditioning from the heat. Le Gobelet Noir has several dining rooms themed to its moody name, while Cafe L’air De La Sirène has one large dining area.

The Butterbeer crepe served at Cafe L’ar De La Sirène features a warm crepe with a Butterbeer filling, topped with powdered sugar, fresh strawberries, Butterbeer whipped cream, a decorative shortbread cookie, and finished with a Butterbeer drizzle. Despite the description, this was not overly sweet. If you enjoy Butterbeer in its drink form, you’ll want to try this. Aside from the Butterbeer crepe, the cafe serves a variety of sweet and savory crepes, quiches, sandwiches, salads, and more.

Le Gobelet Noir features dishes inspired by French, German, and Hungarian cuisine. Items such as Jägerschnitzel and Coqu Au Vin can be found here. Themed to its dark decor, you’ll also find Le Breuage Sombre du Gobelet Noir, which is a dark brew drink with eyes of Plimpies. Don’t worry, they are actually just yogurt popping pearls.

14 Best Sci-Fi Movie Franchises Ranked

    Best Sci-fi movie franchises
    WB/Lucasfilm/TriStar

People need their escapism these days. These are the best sci-fi and fantasy franchises of all time, including a couple that blur the line between the two.

    14. Blade Runner

The fact that “Blade Runner” qualifies as a franchise now rather than one really beloved sci-fi movie is a pretty neat development. To date, the franchise only consists of two films, a couple animated shorts and a tenuous connection to the “Alien” movies, but here’s hoping it continues to grow.

    13. Godzilla

The “Godzilla” series is both one of the most influential sci-fi franchises of all time and one of the most prolific. This is a series that spans dozens of sequels and all sorts of random spinoffs, with the tone varying between serious contemplation of nuclear age horror to rampant monster-on-monster zaniness. We wish American studios had better success translating that formula, but you can’t argue with the sheer amount of Godzilla goodness on tap.

    12. The Hunger Games

You can pretty much trace the current YA dystopian fiction craze straight back to the “Hunger Games” series. And it’s little wonder it turned out to be such a trend-setter. These four movies offer a captivating look at a world so deranged the wealthy elite make hungry teenagers fight to death for their amusement. The allegory is pretty obvious in this case.

    11. X-Men

The “X-Men” franchise has seen some pretty extreme highs and lows over the course of almost two decades of existence. Fortunately, those highs are enough to make up for everything else. These aren’t just great superhero movies, but terrific sci-fi parables about outcasts banding together to make the world a better place. Here’s hoping that things will only improve as the franchise makes it way to Marvel Studios.

    10. Alien

1979’s “Alien” and its 1986 sequel both rank among the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. One is a claustrophobic sci-fi horror mash-up, and the other is a delightfully enjoyable action romp. Sadly, none of the sequels, prequels, and spinoffs have quite lived up to that standard, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t always eager to spend more time in this universe.

    9. Harry Potter

It’s rare to find a franchise that stays good for even two or three movies, much less eight. But for the most part, the “Harry Potter” series only got better with time. And now that series has spawned a whole new spinoff franchise in the form of “Fantastic Beasts.” Between the two, you have one of the most consistently entertaining fantasy properties in Hollywood.

Here is your guide to watch Harry Potter movies in order.

    8. Mad Max

The “Mad Max” movies remain the gold standard when it comes to post-apocalyptic action. And thanks to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the franchise has proven itself to be more relevant and daring than ever in the 21st Century. That belated sequel shows that this series doesn’t need to rest on the shoulders of Mel Gibson, or even the Max Rockatansky character at all.

    7. The Lord of the Rings

For decades, many “Lord of the Rings” fanatics considered this franchise to be impossible to adapt to the big screen. But all it took was a crafty team led by director Peter Jackson to do justice to J.R.R. Tolkien’s sweeping saga of men, elves, orcs and Hobbits. The original trilogy ushered in a whole new weave of fantasy and medieval epics. It’s unfortunate that the “Hobbit” prequels were stretched beyond the breaking point, but we’re still eager to see what other directions Hollywood can take this beloved fantasy series in the years to come.

    6. The Planet of the Apes

From the original series to the new, very photo-real reboot, “Apes” is the allegorical-heavy and emotionally-resonate franchise we need and deserve right now.
    10086723
    20072319

    5. Terminator

Much like the “Alien” franchise, the “Terminator” series is marked by two amazing movies followed by sequels and spinoffs of varying degrees of quality. But those first two movies are enough to cement this franchise as one of the greatest sci-fi properties of all time. The conflict between man and machine is still as resonant now as it was at the time, as is the central theme of fate vs. free will. We just hope we can get one more good sequel out of Arnold Schwarzenegger before he retires from the series for good.
    3281

    4. Back to the Future

There’s a lot to be said for a franchise that knows when to call it quits. “Back to the Future” never overstayed its welcome. The 1985 original is a delightful fusion of science fiction and comedy. Its two sequels further enrich the whirlwind saga of Marty McFly and Doc Brown. And that’s it. Other than an entertaining animated series and a video game continuation, this franchise has been allowed to rest in peace. No remakes or reboots to dilute the appeal of the originals.
    13014
    22233

    3. Star Trek

TV may be the medium in which “Star Trek” works best, but there have been some darned good Trek movies over the decades. Between “The Wrath of Khan,” “The Voyage Home,” “First Contact” and the recent reboot series, there’s no shortage of sci-fi goodness to be found with this franchise. Even if these movies are notorious for alternating between good and bad sequels, “Star Trek” will always rank among the greats.

    2. The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Iron Man in Avengers End Game
    Marvel Studios

The MCU has truly changed the game when it comes to superhero movies. There had certainly been great superhero movies before the MCU came along, but never before had a studio attempted to craft a shared universe on this scale. Marvel Studios has managed to craft a franchsie where super-soldiers, armored billionaires, gods and aliens bump elbows. Most amazingly of all, almost all of the 20-something MCU movies to date have ranged from really good to downright terrific.

Here is your guide to watch Marvel movies in order.

    1. Star Wars

    Kylo Ren in Star Wars
    Lucasfilm

In the end, could there be any other franchise topping this list? “Star Wars” blurs the lines between sci-fi and fantasy, tapping into our most fundamental myths and archetypes to tell the ultimate story of a heroic few overcoming a terrible evil. The original Trilogy shaped countless childhoods and gave us some of the greatest cinematic moments ever. And while the prequels and sequels have their detractors, they also prove that this is a franchise capable of constantly reshaping itself in order to appeal to new generations. This is a saga that apparently has no end, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Box Office Tracking Close to First Film, Lower Than ‘Halloween’ Opening

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Box Office Tracking Close to First Film, Lower Than ‘Halloween’ Opening

    Warner Bros.

First off, early box office tracking is about as reliable as a prediction from Professor Trelawney. But she did get one big one right. So…

The early opening estimates for “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” offer a wide range from $65 million to $75 million. For comparison, “Halloween” just opened above $76 million.

The early estimates for “Halloween” were much, much lower. And the “Grindelwald” estimates may be too low as well. (Or not. We’ll see.) Because why not, here’s my random probably-equally-wrong prediction for the “Fantastic Beasts 2” opening: $82 million.

The second “Fantastic Beasts” movie opens in theaters November 16. Since reviews aren’t even out yet, it’s way too soon to really say how it will do. Some people will be swayed by critical and early audience reactions. It’s very easy and terribly tempting to just stay home and wait for the DVD, rather than head out and spend all that money on something that might disappoint. But if it gets raves, more people might be motivated to head out in the weekend before Thanksgiving.

The first film, which came out in 2016, made $74.4 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. Ultimately, it picked up $234 million at the domestic box office, and a whopping $580 million at the international box office for a worldwide total of $814,037,575.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    Warner Bros.

The global numbers are going to lift “Grindelwald,” too. But for now, the opening North American projections show it earning anywhere from low $60Ms to mid $70Ms.

This film has Johnny Depp starring as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, with Jude Law as (hot) younger Albus Dumbledore. That’s in addition to the returning “Fantastic Beasts” cast, like Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. Plus, we get to meet Nagini before she was a snake!  Some people have threatened to boycott the film because of Depp’s casting, but it remains to be seen if that will really happen and affect the box office take.

“Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five planned films in this series, and it’s hard to imagine people who watched the first one wouldn’t be curious to continue with the series. But that doesn’t mean they’ll rush out to watch it opening weekend, or in a movie theater at all.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, via EW
    Warner Bros.

“Fantastic Beasts 2” was picked as the most anticipated fall movie in at least one survey. Plus, “Halloween” just opened waaaaay past its own early estimates — which were much lower than the eventual $76+ million.  If an R-rated “Halloween” sequel can do that well, shouldn’t a PG-13 “Harry Potter” prequel sequel top it? Apples to oranges?

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” opens Friday, Nov. 16, in the weekend before Thanksgiving. Will you head out that opening weekend, or wait till the next week, or later in the year, or till when it comes out on Digital/DVD/Blu-ray? Or will you skip it entirely?

  • Why Rupert Grint Almost Quit ‘Harry Potter’ After Fourth Movie

Why Rupert Grint Almost Quit ‘Harry Potter’ After Fourth Movie

    Harry Potter
    Warner Bros.

Rupert Grint is 30 years old. It’s hard to imagine it, since we’ve known him as Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” film series since he was cast at age 11.

Grint was part of the main cast for eight “Harry Potter” films. Now he’s co-starring in the Sony Crackle series “Snatch,” and talking to the Independent about his formative years.

Apparently he used the word “weird” more than a dozen times when talking about his Harry Potter experience.

He told the Independent he almost quit the series after filming the fourth film, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

“I had just finished my GCSEs [General Certificate of Secondary Education exams]. I thought ‘Do I actually want to keep doing this? It’s a bit of a drag.’ Because obviously it’s a big sacrifice. You take for granted anonymity — just doing normal stuff, just going out. Everything was different and a little bit scary. There were times when I was like ‘I’m done.’”

    Ron Weasley gif, Harry Potter
    Warner Bros.

Damn. Why is Ron always the quitter?

You could argue Grint was lucky to get the high profile role — which came with the kind of fortune that magically vanishes any of the usual Muggle money problems. But everything in life is a trade-off, and the loss of anonymity that came with fame was a big issue for him. Not just from paparazzi and tabloids looking for dirt, but also from fans constantly whispering, taking photos, or approaching him because he’s Ron.

“It’s almost like having a split personality. Sometimes it can be quite dehumanizing to have people just taking pictures of you when you’re out. To them, you are just this one thing. It’s a weird existence. But that’s my life. I can’t really remember life before it. In a weird way, you become blasé about it. It becomes normal and you adapt.”

Of course, Grint did finish filming the series and he even went back to watch the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” watching a new older actor in the role of Ron Weasley.

Independent asked if he’d ever go back to play Ron in an eventual movie version of the stage play.

“Never say never, but, for me, I closed the book on that. It was a huge and amazing part of my life that I feel ended at the right time. We’re all saying this, but we’re ready to move on. The interesting thing is, I saw the play a couple of years ago, and it’s based 30 years on. It was very strange seeing someone else play Ron. A character I really thought I was. We merged into the same person. To see someone else’s portrayal of it, it was like an out-of-body experience. It was very strange. I loved it.”

Read his full interview for more. In addition to “Snatch” — which he also helps executive produce — Grint will soon be seen as Inspector Crome opposite John Malkovich in the BBC’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “The A.B.C. Murders.”

Johnny Depp Explains Grindelwald’s ‘Scary Eye,’ and Defends Own Casting

Johnny Depp, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    Warner Bros.

There’s been so much talk about Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” but surprisingly little — to none — of that talk has been from Depp himself.

Depp just had a Q&A with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts” sequel. He discussed Grindelwald’s sexuality, his “intense” relationship with Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), his jealousy of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), and his defense of Grindelwald as “an oddly likable character.” (As opposed to Donald Trump — Depp doesn’t agree with comparisions between Grindelwald and Trump.)

He also explained his process of finding the character, and said giving Grindelwald two very different eyes was his idea:

EW: “He now has, as one of your costars referred to, a “Scary Eye,” one eye rather different from the other. Does that have a backstory, is that just creepy?”

Johnny Depp: “It’s a character choice. I saw Grindelwald as more than one, if you know what I mean. I almost felt like he’s maybe two people. He’s twins in one body. So a gamey eye is more like the other side of him. Sort of like a brain for each eye, an albino twin, and he’s somewhere in the middle.”

    Warner Bros.

And of course there’s the controversy over casting Johnny Depp at all. Some “Fantastic Beast” fans were thrilled to see Depp. Others were disappointed, after having Colin Farrell in the first film. And still more were upset at J.K. Rowling for casting Depp after allegations that he abused his now ex-wife Amber Heard. Rowling issued a statement supporting Depp.

EW asked Depp if there was anything he’d say to fans on the fence about seeing the film:

“I’ll be honest with you, I felt bad for J.K. having to field all these various feelings from people out there. I felt bad that she had to take that. But ultimately, there is real controversy. The fact remains I was falsely accused, which is why I’m suing the Sun newspaper for defamation for repeating false accusations. [Depp’s attorney said his “evidence” will be presented in court in the defamation case against The Sun.] J.K. has seen the evidence and therefore knows I was falsely accused, and that’s why she has publicly supported me. She doesn’t take things lightly. She would not stand up if she didn’t know the truth. So that’s really it.”

Not that Rowling was part of Depp’s marriage. None of us were there. Depp also shared a message to the many loyal “Harry Potter” fans:

“I feel like the main thing as an actor is your loyalty. It’s my job to enforce the author’s vision and also be true to the director’s vision. And then there’s being true to my vision. It’s a major responsibility, being handed the keys to this car. My intense loyalty is to not just J.K. and David Yates but to the people who go and see the films as well, the people who have invested their lives into this magnificent, incredible world J.K. has created. I went full tilt and headfirst into the character knowing the responsibility that I had. It’s good to take the audience on a ride they’re not necessarily expecting, yet with great respect to the world they’ve come to understand and know. The Potter fans are like scholars of this stuff which I find incredibly impressive. They know that world inside and out. I hope to give them something they haven’t seen before.”

It’ll take seeing this movie (and maybe the next one, and the next one?) to really judge Depp’s performance as the infamous dark wizard. Fans and non-fans have already taken sides on Depp’s relationship with Heard, and that may continue through the next films as well.

The “Fantastic Beasts” series is meant to include five films, all written by “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling herself. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” is the second movie in the series and it opens in theaters November 16.

‘Legacies’ Trailer Mixes ‘Vampire Diaries’ With ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘X-Men’

    Legacies
    The CW

Legacies” is The CW’s joint spinoff of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” — but it also clearly owes a lot to “X-Men” and “Harry Potter.”

“Legacies is set at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted. It’s gonna remind you of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The show is leaning into those comparisons.

Here’s what Matt Davis (Alaric Saltzman) told TV Guide of his role as Salvatore school headmaster:

“He’s taking on a new set of responsibilities. He genuinely is coming from a place of love. He’s somewhere between Professor X and Dumbledore.”

TV Guide debuted the first trailer, giving us a glimpse of boarding school life:

“Legacies” premieres October 25, and boss Julie Plec said the first few episodes “play into what’s going on with the school and the town of Mystical falls.” There’s a rivalry between the local high school and the kids at Alaric’s private school.

We know Alaric will have some tense moments with “crazy” Sheriff Matt Donovan. And we’ve already heard that Jeremy Gilbert will return.

As TV Guide revealed, “Jeremy has kept busy as a hunter and something brings him back to Mystic Falls this season.” Plec added: “He’s out in the field. He’ll pop up in a couple of episodes.” Last we heard, Steven R. McQueen was popping up in Episode 3.

    The CW

Plec seems to be using “Legacies” to return to her original ideas for “The Vampire Diaries”:

“This show is what The Vampire Diaries was before it became TVD. Everything I always thought TVD would be, I was able to circle back and bring to here.”

Sound good to you? Check out the first photos from “Legacies,” and watch the magic happen Thursday, October 25 at 9/8c on The CW.

  • Macaulay Culkin Just Asked J.K. Rowling to Write Him Into ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’

Macaulay Culkin Just Asked J.K. Rowling to Write Him Into ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’

    Macaulay Culkin, The Tonight Show
    NBC

Macaulay Culkin has kind of a Malfoy look to him, no?

The “Fantastic Beasts” films are all set long before the timeline of Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter, but maybe Culkin could play Grandpa Malfoy.

    Harry Potter, Malfoy family
    Warner Bros.

Just spit-balling to help a guy out, since he clearly wants to be in the next “Fantastic Beasts” movie. Culkin said as much in a tweet to “Harry Potter” author and “Fantastic Beasts” screenwriter J.K. Rowling.

Rowling has been catching some heat from fans for making Nagini a human (and Asian) woman in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” Culkin started his pitch by backing Rowling up on her decisions. He also reached out to Dan Fogler, who plays Jacob Kowalski, as a job reference:

Haha. Culkin may be too late for the third movie, though. During a fan Q&A in late May/June, Rowling revealed she was already working on the script for “Fantastic Beasts 3.” There are five films planned for the “Fantastic Beasts” series. So if he missed No. 3, maybe No. 4 is available?

Culkin, now age 38, hasn’t been up to anything significant film-wise in a while. The “Home Alone” alum is listed as starring in Seth Green‘s film “Changeland,” which is currently marked as in post-production. But he should be free to join “Fantastic Beasts 3,” among other things.

By the way, the photo at top is from a “Tonight Show” interview he gave earlier this year, talking about “Home Alone” conspiracy theories, and all of his death hoaxes:

The second “Fantastic Beasts” movies hits theaters November 16.

  • Claudia Kim: In ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ Nagini Is a ‘Wonderful’ Woman Who Wants to Stay Human

Claudia Kim: In ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ Nagini Is a ‘Wonderful’ Woman Who Wants to Stay Human

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
    Warner Bros.

A “Harry Potter” theory was just confirmed in the new trailer for “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.”

It’s now official that Claudia Kim‘s character is the same Nagini who later becomes Lord Voldemort’s snake Horcrux.

Fans got their suspicions up when it was revealed that Kim’s character was a Maledictus, which denotes a person whose blood had been cursed from birth leading them to eventually turn into a beast.

Claudia Kim talked to Entertainment Weekly about her character, showing emotion when she was finally able to confirm that she’s playing the famous HP character Nagini:

    Warner Bros.

Kim told EW that, in the second film’s storyline of 1927, Nagini “feels this pressure that the clock is ticking” because at some point she will be permanently transformed into a snake.

And while Potter fans know Nagini as Voldemort’s closest ally — who kills Snape and is killed by Neville — this film will show the real woman behind the curse:

“You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”

In “Fantastic Beasts 2,” Nagini is basically the only friend of Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), who has run off and joined the circus.

“It’s amazing these two broken souls are able to form some kind of friendship within the circus,” Kim told EW. “Credence is special to her because he encourages her to use her power.”

Harry Potter author and “Fantastic Beasts” screenwriter J.K. Rowling has been answering questions, and teasing out more information, on Twitter:

A bigger shock is coming for Ezra/Credence?! Interesting…

Here’s more intel on Nagini from the Harry Potter Wiki:

“Nagini (d. 2 May, 1998) was a previously Human Maledictus with the ability to transform into a snake. During the 1920s, she was a performer at the Circus Arcanus where she met Credence Barebone. By the 1990s, Nagini, seemingly trapped in snake form, belonged to Lord Voldemort, with whom she had a special bond largely due to becoming a Horcrux, after her master had killed Bertha Jorkins in 1994.

After Voldemort’s initial downfall, he used Nagini’s venom as one of the ingredients for a Potion in order to regain strength, which eventually led to his Rebirth. In 1995, she attacked Arthur Weasley, but he managed to survive. During the Second Wizarding War, she had to be destroyed in order for Voldemort to be finally defeated. Nagini was killed by Neville Longbottom with Godric Gryffindor’s Sword in 1998, and was the last Horcrux to be destroyed.”

Warner Bros. recently issued character posts for stars Eddie RedmayneKatherine WaterstonDan FoglerAlison SudolEzra MillerJude LawJohnny Depp, and Callum Turner. EW also added Claudia Kim’s to the list:

  • Emma Stone Mistaken for Emma Watson in Hilarious ‘Billy on the Street’ Video

Emma Stone Mistaken for Emma Watson in Hilarious ‘Billy on the Street’ Video

    Emma Watson, Emma Stone
    Warner Bros./Lionsgate Films

Someone needs to just cast both Emmas in a movie — Emma Watson on one side, Emma Stone on the other.

Maybe it’s a horror movie. Maybe it’s a superhero movie. Maybe it’s a romantic comedy and they fall in love in the end.

Either way, this feels like it’s leading somewhere.

Billy Eichner just returned with more “Billy on the Street” — ambushing random people on sidewalks with random questions, and then yelling at them as he runs away.

It doesn’t sound like it should work, but it’s awesome.

In his newest video, Billy acknowledged all the serious questions facing the country today … so he decided to ask New Yorkers if they agree that Emma Stone should join Instagram. The result was amazing on so many levels. Poor Emma Stone just seemed so sweet and awkward, and some of the fans on the street were classic.

When one guy was asked for his favorite Emma Stone movie, he said “Harry Potter.”

    Billy: “That’s Emma WATSON.”

    Emma: “That’s OK.”

Billy [angry whisper to Emma Stone]: “Why couldn’t you be Emma Watson?”

Funny he should say that. Emma Watson was originally attached to the “La La Land” role that ultimately got Emma Stone her Oscar. More recently, Emma Watson was announced to replace Emma Stone in “Little Women.” They are locked in a Hollywood dance. Now we just have to get them their own franchise — and maybe throw Emma Roberts into the triangle.

Watch the whole thing, and keep going, keep going, keep going to the end for Emma Stone’s never-ending horror face:

  • Daniel Radcliffe Reacting to ‘Harry Potter’ Memes Is Just Brilliant

Daniel Radcliffe Reacting to ‘Harry Potter’ Memes Is Just Brilliant

    The Tonight Show, Daniel Radcliffe
    NBC

Daniel Radcliffe will never — never — not be Harry Potter.

He has made so many other movies by now, and he’s become quite a Broadway star. But he was just on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” trying to promote his new play “The Lifespan of a Fact,” and he was asked to react to Harry Potter memes.

He does get to talk about his play, starting around the 2:50 mark of the video below. But first, Jimmy Fallon had to talk Potter. Daniel Radcliffe said he’s seen a few Harry Potter memes out there, but he doesn’t exactly seek them out.

So watch the video to see him react to memes like “Hairy Pugger” — “What’s not to like? That’s great” — and “If you’re havin’ Quidditch problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a snitch ain’t one.”

    Dan really liked that one:

“What’s cool about that stuff is, as a kid I was insecure, I never felt cool at any point playing that character. So [these memes show] people thought I was pretty cool.”

The audience cheered. Of course we all found him cool. Who didn’t want that Hogwarts life?

Watch the video to see him react to a few more memes; he also explained what he was actually thinking in one photo of himself — not as Harry — that became its own meme. A paparazzo is involved.

It’s a shame there wasn’t time to get DanRad’s reaction to all the “Guns Akimbo” memes from a few months ago. Here’s just one:

If you happen to be heading to Broadway, here’s how to check out “The Lifespan of a Fact.”
