  • ‘Tommy Boy’ 30th Anniversary Interview: Director Peter Segal

    Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director Peter Segal about his work on ‘Tommy Boy’, how he came to direct the project, improvising on set, Farley and Spade’s chemistry, Spade’s comedic abilities, Farley’s genius and legacy, and why Rob Lowe did not take a credit in the film.

    Moviefone: To begin with, from your unique perspective can you talk about how this project came together and you were hired to direct?

    Peter Segal: I had worked with Farley a couple times before this movie, once on an HBO special and then on a sitcom called ‘The Jackie Thomas Show’. At that point I had not done ‘Naked Gun 33+1/3’ yet. But I knew that if I had an opportunity to ever do a movie that I absolutely wanted to work with Farley in a starring role. So, about a year after ‘The Jackie Thomas Show’, the script from the Bonnie and Terry Turner came to me, ‘Billy the Third: a Midwestern’. It was a first draft and I had a lot of ideas. I actually wanted to take the story, if I did it, in a different direction, adding a little bit more of a relationship with Tommy’s father and himself, in addition to Richard and Tommy working together to save the factory. By doing that I was unraveling the very thing that was greenlit. It put us in a precarious place because suddenly we had no script and we were heading towards the ‘SNL’ season, which meant we were going to be splitting time. That was the good and the bad news. The bad news, it was hard for Dave and Chris to go back and forth from Toronto to New York. But it allowed me a couple of extra days a week to work on the script with Fred Wolf as we were filming. So that’s how we survived.

    MF: Famously, the “Fat guy in a little coat” and “Housekeeping” scenes were improvised on set and were bits that Farley and Spade would do off screen. Can you talk about those scenes and how much of the film was improvised?

    PS: Well, once, like I said, we changed direction on the script and started with not much we were desperate for any bits or stories about what they did together at ‘SNL’. “Fat Guy in a Little Coat” was definitely one of those things. But it was spoken, not sung. That was Chris’s thing at ‘SNL’. Well, both Chris and Dave were a little bored of the moviemaking process of multiple takes, multiple angles, they’re used to one take with live cameras. So, when we were shooting “Fat Guy in a Little Coat” from the office scene, I shot Chris and then I turned the camera around on Dave. I wasn’t paying attention to Chris but he was getting so bored that he started to improv and sing just to try to get Dave to break and laugh. I wasn’t really paying attention, I was just focusing on Dave, until my editor that night after dailies said, “Oh my God, you’ve got to go back and reshoot him this time singing.” That’s the type of thing. There were so many little things like that that I would just jot down. One example was Dave looked at Chris coming out of a wardrobe test, and Chris was wearing the now iconic brown tweed jacket, and he said, “Hey, Dave, does this suit make me look fat?” Dave said, “No, your face does.” I went “Okay, that’s going in.”

    MF: ‘Tommy Boy’ is very much a chemistry movie. Can you talk about Farley and Spade’s relationship and onscreen chemistry, and how you were able to capture that with this film?

    PS: What I have heard is that Spade and Farley were goofing off during a writing session at SNL and Lorne (Michaels) said, “We’ve got to do something with you two, so Turner’s see if you can come up with something,” and they did because he saw the chemistry between them. You can’t teach chemistry it sort of is what it is, you have it or you don’t. Dave and Chris were best of friends but they were also an old married couple. They’d get into fights, and then kiss and make up and everything was fine, and then fight again. It was just sort of like watching two young boys. I mean, we were all young at the time. It was a little juvenile. But it was also where the inspiration and the fun came from because they loved to pick on one another. Dave could say stuff to Chris that I would never have imagined anyone saying like the thing about the coat but it would make Chris laugh, and that stuff was just priceless.

    MF: Can you talk about how important David Spade’s role as the “straight man” is to the film and his ability to work off of Farley?

    PS: Well, he’s really sort of the engine of a lot of the improv. I would not say that a lot of improvisation happened while the cameras are rolling but the improv happened off camera where they would just interact. If Dave served up the beginning of a joke, Chris would knock it out of the park and they loved that. It’s like watching in basketball someone make a great assist. Dave was an assist leader. That helped with the writing process. His idea for the Carpenter‘s song (“Superstar”) and many other things. Like I said, we were just so desperate for anything that when these guys, as much as they were exhausted, would come up with ideas, we’d try to find a way to put it in the movie.

    MF: In addition to being a comedic genius, Chris Farley was also a strong dramatic actor, and you can see that in the scene where he says goodbye to his late father on the boat. Can you talk about Farley’s legacy and were you aware of how talented he was when you were making the movie?

    PS: Well, I sort of discovered that. Even though I’d worked with him a couple of times before, those were definitely comedies. This story I knew was going to touch on something that was very important to him and that was his relationship with his father in real life. The fact that we knew that the character of Big Tom was going to die, I knew that there was an opportunity here to show a different side of Chris Farley because there are going to be more serious moments, it wasn’t just about the jokes. It was delightful to see how good he was at that. That’s what makes me, and still does to this day, so very sad that he didn’t get to really explore that part of his personality. The original writers for ‘Shrek’ actually told me that they patterned the characters of Donkey and Ogre after Spade and Farley in ‘Tommy Boy”. Then Chris, of course, was hired to play the Ogre but didn’t complete it before he passed.

    MF: Finally, why did Rob Lowe take no credit in the film?

    PS: It’s a little bit of a mystery to this day. I think possibly because he thought the movie might’ve sucked and wanted to protect himself. I mean, that’s sort of just a joke. I really don’t know. I’ve never really asked him but it seems to be on a lot of people’s minds.

    Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Oscar-nominated screenwriters Tim Fehlbaum and Moritz Binder about their work on ‘September 5’, being nominated for an Academy Award, their research and development of the screenplay, their writing process together, the choice to cast an actor to play Peter Jennings, Fehlbaum’s experience directing, and the bonus features available in the digital release.

    Moviefone: To begin with, congratulations to both of you on your Oscar nomination. How does it feel to be an Academy Award nominee?

    Moritz Binder: It feels still like a dream, I have to say. I mean, when we found out, when we heard the nomination, we were overwhelmed with joy for that very second, and then I immediately thought, “Okay, maybe I have to sleep one night to realize it.” But I’m still waiting for that moment because this recognition is almost the biggest recognition you can get. Having your name, like our movie, among these other movies and these other people, people we deeply admire, that feels like a great honor, and we are very honored to be there.

    MF: Tim, how does it feel to see your film celebrated in this way?

    Tim Fehlbaum: I can say it’s a childhood dream coming true in a way, and it’s very exciting. We’re blessed that we also had the support of Paramount Pictures to give the movie that wide release and to give it the whole campaign. I also hope that, in a way, the nomination, also motivates people to see it in the theater also because it’s still out there, and I hope it helps to get some attention to the movie.

    MF: Moritz, can you talk about joining forces with Tim to write this screenplay, and the research you did into the actual event?

    MB: You must know that this was a kind of lucky moment. As a journalist, you would maybe call it reporter’s luck because we were broadly researching everything from police files to scientific books about politics, and we got deeper into the research, and we found out more about that crucial role the media played at that day. We were really interested in that because both of us, we are kind of people in the media, too, as filmmakers, and I come from a documentary background before that I was a TV journalist. So, I was really interested, or we both were really interested, in this special crucial moment of media history. Then we found Geoffrey Mason, the character now played by John Magaro, and we scheduled a Zoom meeting that was maybe set up for half an hour to talk to a source. But I think it lasted over two hours because we talked and he told us his story from his perspective, his 22 hours sitting in that room. It was so interesting and so thrillingly that we, after that meeting said, “Well, maybe this is not a source. Maybe this is the perspective of the movie.” Then we thought, for the first time, about not leaving this room for an entire movie.

    MF: Tim, as a director and a writer, can you talk about the challenges of staying true to the facts while still telling an entertaining and compelling story?

    TF: I mean, that’s the act of balance that we had to do at every step of the process, at the script writing stage, when shooting, and then also still up until editing. Interestingly, I would say this is also questions that the crew in our movie gets confronted with, you know? They want to stay true to the story, but sometimes they are like, “Nothing’s going on. What can we report on?” So, our credo was always that we tried to stay as truthful as possible. But as you said correctly, we also are telling a movie, and it was important for us to keep the audience engaged because that’s also what Geoffrey Mason told us about this 22-hour marathon of broadcasting felt. It was like this because it was so intense. So, we felt the movie must feel the same way. So, what we did, of course, is condense events. We are telling these 22 hours within 90 minutes, but also, we combine certain characters. So Geoffrey Mason is (a composite of) several professions that were done by several people in that room, or Leonie Benesch is also a combination of several stories of characters that we heard, because for us, it was also important that we have Germany’s state of mind in the historical context reflected in the movie. Or little things like, to give another example, we have that crucial scene in the moment where they think that the police called off the action because they were being filmed. From our research, we know that this is probably not the reason why the police called it off. It’s much more likely that they just were completely overwhelmed in a situation like this. But the police were there, and then we heard it from Geoffrey who worked there, “Tell them to turn off the cameras”, and they were so clear. Of course, we must have that in the movie. Of course, they themselves kept asking, “Oh, are we part of the reason why they failed now?”

    MF: Moritz, can you talk about the actual writing process between you and Tim? How does it work?

    MB: You must know that I got down the rabbit hole in research, and I tried to find all the details that really were interesting, and sometimes maybe I found too many details because the scenes got longer and longer. Tim is good at finding the core of the scene and keeping the rhythm of the movie. So, the thing that everybody is talking about now is that it feels like a thriller, and its fast pace. This is something that Tim always pushed for. Even the screenplay feels like a page turner. I think that was a great collaboration because I always tried to find details hidden in the research and providing them, and Tim always was aiming for the greater picture and the rhythm. That was a great experience.

    MF: Moritz, can you talk about the choice to cast an actor as reporter Peter Jennings, yet use real footage of broadcaster Jim McKay, rather than casting an actor to play him as well? Was that choice made during the writing process or during pre-production?

    MB: That was a script choice because we found in the research hidden between lines, for example, Roone Arledge’s biography, that there was some kind of tension between Roone Arledge and Peter Jennings at some certain points. For example, how they could name the perpetrators that day, for example, or should news take over. We thought that this is such a crucial discussion that we need it as a scene between the characters. So, we decided on a very early stage that we would cast Peter Jennings, but we would need the real Jim McKay for this. So that was kind of the choice that happened in there.

    TF: I think it’s a good question. An important part of the premise of the movie is that they were sports broadcasters that had to make the switch. So, of course, Peter Jennings was the only person from news there, so that they got confronted with that they’re maybe not experienced or trained to report on a situation like this, via a character that had to be there. So, it’s Peter Jennings. It was clear that Peter Jennings is a character. But I’m also so glad that we could license the original footage because, my theory is if we would have had McKay as an actor, then you would also start to be like, “I want to also see that guy’s story. He’s the person who must talk about it. I want to see what he struggles with, it’s just as important or as interesting as what the people in the control room are struggling with.” But since it is the original McKay, I hope that on a subconscious level at least, the audience is like, “Yeah, of course I don’t see this person because that’s the real footage, and this is a film about people behind the camera.”

    MF: Finally, Tim, can you talk about the bonus features that can be found on the digital release?

    TF: Oh, we have a lot of wonderful material. I’ve seen all of it. You see, especially also how big the effort was, the production designer, Julian R. Wagner, how they built a set based on original construction plans. You see interviews with the real Geoffrey Mason. That is, I think, interesting to see the person that we based John Magaro’s character on and our conversations with him, that was the inspiration to make the movie. If you see these interviews in the bonus material, you see why, because he’s such an eloquent person, and it’s so interesting to listen to his stories. You just get an idea of the whole machinery behind that film and how everybody put their whole heart into it. So, it’s nice. I must say that, for me, I learned more from watching bonus materials on DVDs, and then a little bit later, Blu-rays, then from many years of film school. So, I really enjoy bonus materials and hope for viewers that we offer an interesting package there.

    Nearly six years after ‘Deadpool 2,’ the self-proclaimed “Marvel Jesus” has returned to the big screen and this time, he brought his BFF Wolverine with him. Real-life BFFs Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively.

    Director Shawn Levy (‘Free Guy’) is at the helm for the highly anticipated film. The movie features a slew of familiar Marvel characters, unexpected cameos, visceral fight scenes, and a fantastic soundtrack.

    The film premiered at the David H. Hoch Theater in New York City on July 22, 2024. The movie was released domestically on July 26 in formats such as IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX.     Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dafne Keen about her work on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, how she found out she would be returning, returning to the character of Laura, how she’s changed since ‘Logan’, reuniting with Hugh Jackman, working with the rest of the cast, which scenes were improvised, the action sequences, the challenges of keeping her appearance a secret, collaborating with director Shawn Levy, what she learned from Ryan Reynolds, joining the MCU and the possibility of her appearing in future Marvel movies.

    Moviefone: To begin with, when did you learn that you would be returning to play Laura / X-23 in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and were you given the entire script to read before shooting?

    Dafne Keen: I got a call from my agent to tell me, and then I had a FaceTime with Shawn, and I had a bunch of guy friends over at my house and I locked them outside in the garden while I was on the phone to Shawn. Then Shawn said to me, “All your scenes are with huge actors, but I can’t tell you who.” Then I got the full script, but it was so heavily spoiler free in the sense that they changed all the names for everything, but I understood the story. I just didn’t know who anyone was. So, watching the film was cool. I was like, “Oh, that’s crazy.” I kind of figured it out because I’d go into a costume fitting and I’d see a picture of someone on the wall and I’d be like, “Wait, who are they playing?” It was cool. It was fun and I’m happy that I got to read the whole script and it was exciting.

    MF: What was it like working with Hugh Jackman again all these years after ‘Logan’?

    DK: Yeah, it was weirdly, it was like no time had passed. We started acting and it was like we were doing ‘Logan’ yesterday. It was weird and wonderful.

    MF: Can you talk about how Laura has changed since ‘Logan’ and did you create a backstory for yourself about how she ended up in the Void?

    DK: I think as an actor you must. I think it was fun playing her as an older character, especially now because she’s got this sense of gratitude that she didn’t have in ‘Logan’. She’d been so wronged by men and by men, I mean humans. I think she had no faith in humanity, and I think Charles (Xavier) and Logan restored that in ‘Logan’. After losing them, she kind of has this sense of loss but still gratefulness for them and getting to have her reunite with Logan is such a huge thing for her and getting to play that felt like a big emotional beat for that character.

    MF: As a comic book fan, I think ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ might feature the greatest superhero team-up of all time. What was it like for you to work with Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes and Channing Tatum and be a part of this incredible onscreen team-up?

    DK: It was so cool and they’re just the most lovely, wonderful people. We had the best time and as a fan it was just crazy when you hear the superheroes you are sharing the screen with are Gambit, Elektra and Blade. Then you meet them and they’re the loveliest, most nurturing, funniest people, so we just had the greatest time on set.

    MF: Famously, Ryan Reynolds loves to improvise on set. Did you have a chance to improvise with him in any of your scenes?

    DK: I didn’t get to do as much, but I got to witness Channing and Ryan do a lot of it, which was fun. I felt like I was in a master class for comedy. It was really cool, and everyone was so talented, but they had a lot of comedic beats that I got to just stand back and enjoy.

    MF: Can you give us an example of a scene that Ryan and Channing improvised?

    DK: I think the line where we’re in the cave, and Channing’s like, “I shot out my mama and I said, What’s up, Doc?” That was an improv, and we were all dying. That whole interaction between Ryan and Channing was improvised. The “Who’s your dialect coach? The Minions”, I think that was an ad lib. It was so impressive, and it was cool to then be at the premiere and all their improvisations was getting so much love and laughter. It was exciting to know that it was all kind of in the script, but it was all like an ad lib variation of it.

    MF: What was it like filming the final battle sequence in the Void? How many days did that take to shoot?

    DK: It took a while. It took a week I think, and I had to go back because I had all the wire work for climbing up the skull. I had to come back in the end of January, and it was so fun. We had the best time. It’s the most fun I’ve had doing stunts ever. To get to train with these people, it’s incredible. I came into training, and it was like Channing, Wesley, Jennifer, Ryan, Hugh. It was so cool, and we were all just so excited to be there and we all love these characters so much. We all felt so lucky to be there, which I think is such a rare thing. A lot of people are ready to go home and to wrap the day and we were all just happy to stay. If they’d ask us to do 20 hours of overtime, we would’ve all been like, “Yeah, I’m here and I’m so excited to do this.” It was cool. We were all kind of nerding out with everyone with their weapons. I had the claws back and I was so excited about the glasses. Channing was so excited about throwing the cards. He’d learned a bunch of impressive card tricks. It was very cool.

    MF: Can you talk about the challenges of keeping your involvement in the movie a secret, especially when you were doing press for ‘The Acolyte’?

    DK: I enjoyed it. It was quite fun. It’s cool to do these interviews and I got to be like, “It’s so sad. I’m not in it.” I knew I’d filmed it and we’d had a great time on set. Also, it felt exciting. It was a cool surprise for the fans, and it felt like such a special thing, and it was such a special thing for me. It was quite funny because my two co-stars and my very good friends, Amandla (Stenberg) and Charlie (Barnett) who were in the show with me knew. So anytime I’d get asked around them, they would giggle. So, if you look at the interviews, they’re trying to look down and trying to be nonchalant when we all knew it. So, it was quite funny.

    MF: Is it true that you were added to the film’s final trailer specifically so you could attend the premiere without any questions?

    DK: I don’t really know. Maybe. I was going to go to the premiere as far as I know in the capacity of, “Oh, Hugh invited me.” That was the original lie, and then they were like, “We’re putting you in the trailer, which means you can come to the premiere.” So maybe it was to come to the premiere. That was the original plan, and it would’ve worked because we’re buddies. It is exciting. I was happy I got to go.

    MF: What is Shawn Levy like as a director on set?

    DK: I love that question because I love Shawn. Shawn is one of my favorite people to ever work with. He’s such a wonderful human being and such an incredible director. He’s got such incredible dexterity and such an amazing range of talent that he can do. I’ve seen him directing the funniest, most absurd scene, and then I saw him directing us in the bonfire scene, which was a kind of heavy, hard-hitting thing. He was so incredible at the nuance and knowing when things had to be cool and big and what he was doing for the fans and when they had to be small and human and raw and when he had to do cuts and when he didn’t. He was so kind of gentle in his directing with us, but so honest and so specific with his notes in a really special way. He also loves making films, and I love making films, so it was so cool to be around someone who kind of loved it and was excited to be there. Like I said, we were all just so excited to be there and Shawn was the first one and he infected us all with this incredible joy and excitement for the project. I truly feel so honored to have worked with him and I think he’s already one of the biggest directors, but I think he’s going to go down in the history books for me.

    MF: In addition to being an actor, Ryan Reynolds is also a screenwriter and producer, and basically the force that makes these ‘Deadpool’ movies possible. What did you learn from working with him that you will apply to your own career moving forward?

    DK: I learned so much from observing Ryan on set. He’s such an incredible creative. He’s so dedicated and so hardworking and he’s got such an incredible mind. I was so impressed by how he was on everything. We’d be acting and he would be acting and improving while thinking about the script change for another scene that they were going to shoot three days later while thinking about producing. It was so impressive to watch him, and I think him, and Hugh and Shawn are such incredible hard workers that I honestly felt like I was in a masterclass the whole time and five minutes with those guys felt like 20 years of lessons. I think Ryan really taught me a lot and I got to really observe his process, even just as an actor, he’s so impressive. He’s got such incredible range. You see him in a character like Deadpool where he’s being so funny, and he’s got scenes where he is being hilarious, absurd, ridiculous and outlandish. Then you see him when he is talking about Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) in the film and it’s completely heartbreaking and devastating and you can really see that in his career and in the things he’s picked. You can see completely comedic characters and then you see the character that he did in ‘The Voices’. I’ve always just really looked up to him as a creative. So, getting to share the screen with him was huge.

    MF: Finally, thanks to ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, ‘Logan’ and the character of Laura / X-23 is now cannon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How does it feel to be part of that legacy and is it possible that we will see you playing this character again in the MCU at some point?

    DK: I mean, even hearing you say that ‘Logan’ is canon is so crazy to me. I’m still kind of absorbing that and the possibility is so exciting. I mean, I’ve said this a trillion times. I would play Laura for the rest of my life, and I would be content. She’s the most incredible character to play and I have so much fun playing her, and I have so much love for her, and I have so much love for Marvel. So, I’d pay them to have me back, honestly, if I’m being completely honest. So of course, I really hope I get a call, even if it is to do another tiny little silly cameo in something. I’d be happy. Any chance I get to be here again and get the claws back on, I’ll take it.

    Six years after the events of ‘Deadpool 2’, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) lives a quiet life, having left his time as the mercenary Deadpool behind him, until the Time Variance Authority (TVA)—a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline—pulls him into a new mission.     Director Kelsey Mann is at the helm for the sequel and went to great lengths to retain the same look and aesthetic as the 2015 film. The sequel deeply explores the self-doubt and self-consciousness of a teenager, which will make for a ton of puns and laughs.

    The latest installment in the ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise comes centuries after Caesar’s reign. The story follows a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague) and his journey to free his clan from Proximus Caesar’s (Kevin Durand) tyrannical rule. The Apes epic is helmed by Wes Ball (‘The Maze Runner’).

    In the film, the apes are the dominant species, and the humans are reduced to living in shadows. The movie received positive reviews, with an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and a 70% from the audience.     Currently, there are no official announcements from the studio for a sequel to ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’. However, director Wes Ball eluded in an interview with Variety that this film is the first in the trilogy. When asked if there’s an intention to do two more, Ball replied, “Yeah, three is a good number.”

    Wes Ball is also set to direct the ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie, an extremely popular and beloved video game.

    Moviefone: To begin with, ‘Despicable Me 4’ is now available on digital but is still doing very well theatrically at the box office. Are you surprised by the success of the movie and the popularity of the franchise?

    Chris Renaud: Yes and no. In that, I mean, look, as we’re making these films, we preview them. We test them with audiences, and I was at a premiere in New York and a premiere in Paris, and even though those are probably stacked in your favor, you can feel the energy. You can feel the response and the love that the audience really has for these characters. I think that obviously coming off ‘Minions: Rise of Gru’, the love of the audience is clear. I think the job for us as filmmakers is not to let them down. I think that after sitting with several audiences through the course of making the movie, and you can never predict what’s going to happen financially at the box office, but I felt that we were delivering on the promise and hopefully that that would translate to people going to the theater and seeing the movie.

    MF: Can you explain the pop culture phenomenon that is the Minions? Why do we love them so much?

    CR: It’s truly lightning in a bottle. I think it’s one of those things that all the elements came together to create this comedic personality with a universal quality. By that I mean from the design, which is super simple, a five-year-old could draw it, no problem. The simple color scheme, yellow and blue, besides the Ukrainian flag now means Minions. The language, which is every language and (no language at the same time), and very much influenced by things like R2-D2 and the Jawas where you kind of got what they were saying but you didn’t understand it literally. Their animated performance, their incompetence, their childlike quality which gives them this appeal that is hard to match. So, I really truly think it’s one of those things where every element of it came together in a way that is just special. That’s about all I can say. The things that I loved as a kid, Batman comics and ‘Star Wars’, the Minions are sort of maybe not quite at that level, but they’re in the culture in a way that is far and few between with other characters, and that’s amazing to have been a part of that.

    MF: Can you talk about how Gru has changed since the first film?

    CR: We think about that. We’re like, we need Gru to be Gru, which is maybe more villainous, but the truth is when we try it, what we end up finding is it feels false. The reason why, and I think one of the reasons that besides the Minions that people like this group of characters is that Gru has changed, and he’s changed the way probably most people change once they have kids and have a family. It does change you and change how you think. So, it’s very extreme for Gru, where he was a villain and then now, he’s essentially a good guy and a softy. He’s still, obviously in this movie, he enjoys seeing his snobby neighbor get bested by one of the Minions. So, he still Gru, but he’s a different guy. I think that the arc of his life is something that a lot of people, particularly the adults in the audience can relate to.

    MF: Can you talk about Gru and Le Mal’s history together and their rivalry?

    CR: Maxime Le Mal really starts with Will Ferrell’s performance, which is terrific. Seeing Maxime and Gru in the high school reunion, they went to a villain high school called Lycée Pas Bon. Seeing that rivalry at the beginning of the film I think is just so much fun, particularly with those comedic actors, but also giving us an opportunity to again, see a different aspect of Gru’s life. We haven’t really seen any clips from his high school. What I love too, without getting into the details is that the source of their rivalry is such a small detail and such a small transgression. I think that’s so true, and I think that’s one of the great things about these characters and what makes them so relatable is that little kind of, as I said, transgression from high school is the kind of thing that we carry with us the rest of our life. I love that, that it is not some big world-shattering stakes that they have against each other. It’s just a tiny insult that ends up creating this rivalry that runs through the film.

    MF: What was it like working with Will Ferrell?

    CR: So, the character in the script that we delivered to Will was Maxime Le Mal. So, he came in with a French accent, which was great. What we did do, as I sort of gave him the opportunity, I said, “Look, do you have any other ideas that we could try?” Because it was the first session. Will is like, “Listen, I got this great Swedish accent I’ve always wanted to try.” We would’ve changed the name no problem. It was early days. We did try a couple of things, but really the French accent that he came in with was what you hear and that is the character.

    MF: Can you talk about Steve Carell’s impact on this franchise?

    CR: I think it’s hard to understate how important Steve’s performance is to the character. Again, and we were just talking about accents. One of the things that when we started our first recording session for him way back in probably 2008, we were talking about Peter Sellers and ‘Inspector Clouseau‘ and this idea of an accent. We tried a couple of things like a Latin influence, a couple of different thoughts, a Spanish influence. But we quickly landed on what you hear, which is this kind of weird fusion of Eastern European. The scale to it that Steve was able to bring, and we obviously have the best comedic actor out there, but it all radiates out of what Steve has done with Gru. When he comes in and records, obviously at this point, we know what he is doing. It’s not like we’re figuring it out. We all have a good handle on Gru, but he’s very thoughtful in the process. He thinks about the lines. He is like, “Why would Gru say that?” He’s very considerate of the character and I’m sure he has a great affection for the character because he’s probably one of the most iconic, well-known animated characters of all time at this point. That’s no small credit to the performance that Steve has helped create. I say help because of the animators who do the visual and the character design, but Steve is really where it starts.

    MF: Finally, can you talk about what it has meant to you personally to be part of this beloved franchise?

    CR: in a lot of ways that’s even hard to describe. It’s had such a huge impact on me, not just working with these characters and being a part of these successful films, but living in Paris, France where the film picture is produced. So as an American living abroad, I’ve spent essentially my adult life there. We moved back in 2008, it’s almost 16 years now I’ve lived in France. So, it’s every aspect of my life and our life as a family have been impacted by working on these films. I think that Illumination as a company stands where it stands because of the first ‘Despicable Me’, it was a rock-solid idea in the original pitch. Then the stuff that we were able to add to it, Pierre Coffin, myself, the writers, Chris Meledandri, and the team at Illumination. It really was one of these things that was built brick by brick in the first film. I think that first film is what carries the day and why we’re talking about a ‘Despicable Me 4’ now. It was something that from a design point of view and animation point of view, when it came out, everyone was like, “What is this?” I think that now it’s obviously become part of the culture, but I think that our ability to create something a bit different in the marketplace at the time still resonates. It’s why we’re still making these movies.

    James Cameron is not a man to mince words. He’s been outspoken on a variety of topics and continues to be a no-BS talker when he’s interviewed.

    And though it seemed he would be busy with ‘Avatar’ projects for the foreseeable future, he’s someone who has always had time to figure out other ideas, even if he ends up handing them off to other filmmakers.

    The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down with him to discuss one of his new projects, a docuseries called ‘OceanXplorers’ that channels one of his other big passions: diving deep into the sea.

    Yet it was his comments about something potentially new in the ‘Terminator’ world that drew the most excitement…

    What did James Cameron say about a new ‘Terminator’ project?

    When asked about the upcoming ‘Terminator Zero’ animated project landing on Netflix on August 29th, he admitted that he had nothing to do with it but hoped that it would be a success.

    Still, more intriguingly, he dropped word of his own development in that sphere.

    “I’m working on my own ‘Terminator’ stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that. Like with ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’, they occasionally touched on things I had been playing with completely independently. It’s totally classified. I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.”

    Intriguing! Despite his obvious need for secrecy, there’s much to anticipate about a ‘Terminator’ that includes real involvement from Cameron. The movies and shows that followed his groundbreaking 1984 original and its even more impressive sequel, ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ have been hit and miss (mostly, let’s be honest, miss, even 2019’s ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, which boasted Cameron as a producer), but if he’s excited by something in the ‘Terminator’ world, we’re not going to bet against someone who has made some of the most successful movies in history.

    What else did James Cameron talk about?

    One of the better answers Cameron gives in the interview is when he’s asked about comments Roland Emmerich made at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con about leaving the ‘Fantastic Voyage’ remake because Cameron (who wrote a draft and was a producer on the still-unmade movie) was, to quote Emmerich, “Overbearing”.

    Here’s what Cameron said:

    “I’ve never said anything negative about Roland. But anyway: Yes, I’m overbearing. Damn right. When it’s a project where I’ve contributed to the writing, I might actually have an opinion on it. I actually don’t even remember talking to Roland Emmerich about ‘Fantastic’. I remember the other directors that we worked with for months on end trying to develop that project. If I talked to Roland, it was for two minutes. I have a pretty good memory and I don’t remember that at all.”

    There was one other subject that caused a hot-button response. Asked about complaints with regards to the look of the new 4K transfers of ‘Aliens’ and ‘True Lies’.

    This is what he said:

    “When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom’s basement and meet somebody. Right? I’m serious. I mean, are you f****** kidding me? I’ve got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the color and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for years]. All the ‘Avatar’ films are done that way. Everything is done that way. Get a life, people, seriously.”

    Oh, James Cameron… never change.

    Moviefone: To begin with, your character was killed off in ‘Bad Boys for Life’, how surprised were you to discover you would be retuning for ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’?

    Joe Pantoliano: I wasn’t going to give them any opportunity to change their mind. “Yes, sir. May I have another?”

    MF: What was it like for you to return and have a chance to play Captain Howard one more time?

    JP: Oh, it was great. It was brief. I was working on something else, and I needed to get back, I was doing a play. So, they accommodated my schedule. It was a whirlwind, but it turned out to be so very good.

    MF: Can you talk about Captain Howard’s love and respect for Mike and Marcus, and the trust that he’s given to them over the years?

    JP: It’s a natural trajectory that played into the chemistry. In a lot of ways, it reflected our own personal journey as actors, as people, and as humans. I got to know those guys when they were kids, and then started families, and grown up in a way that I’m very proud of them as professionals and as humans.

    MF: What was it like getting to work with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence again?

    JP: It’s just very easy.

    MF: Can you talk about shooting the “After Life” scene with Martin Lawrence?

    JP: It was fascinating, because it was blue screen, and the equipment that they use. When Marcus goes back into the bed and the clothes get torn off. The equipment boggles my mind, it boggles my imagination. The forty-some years that I’ve been doing this, the idea that focus pullers can now be 200 yards away from the camera, it just boggles my mind. So, I was just like a kid in a candy store, seeing how they do all this stuff and having no idea how it gets pulled off.

    MF: Finally, you began making these films with director Michael Bay but what has it been like working with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on these last two ‘Bad Boys’ movies?

    JP: They have a childlike quality about them, and enthusiastically, and Michael Bay is one of their hugest fans. They’re huge fans of Michael Bay. So, to pay homage to what Michael created, and they adore him, and they think about that, and their collaboration with Robrecht Heyvaert, the cinematographer who’s extraordinarily creative in his own right. So, it’s a combination of the three of them. Fascinating. It’s like being a student of filmmaking, you just watch this stuff, and you go, “Wow, how did they do it?”

The next installment is scheduled for release on March 26, 2027 with a new director – Grant Sputore, at the helm.
