The upcoming Walt Disney animated feature ‘Moana 2’ will be in theaters on November 27, 2024. Moviefone was invited to the Walt Disney Animation Building in Burbank, California, along with a group of journalists to preview the first 25 minutes of the film and see just how far the animators will go to continue Moana’s story.

What Footage Did We See From ‘Moana 2’?

Moviefone had the pleasure of screening the first 25 minutes of ‘Moana 2’, presented by directors Dana Ledoux Miller, David Derrick Jr., and Jason Hand.

Derrick, who is of Samoan heritage, spoke of his time on the 2016 film and discovering Moana’s history and heritage:

“Working on the first film was an absolute gift. Continuing her story has been one of the true honors of my career.”

Over 750 people worked on the sequel, including long-time Disney animator Eric Goldberg (‘Aladdin,’ ‘Once Upon A Studio’) as Supervising Animator.

Ahead of viewing the footage, the directors spoke of the new characters who are introduced in this movie. Aside from returning talents such as Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, ‘Moana 2’ boasts a slew of new characters, including a band of adventuring seafarers who will accompany Moana on her journey, as well as her little sister, Simea.

The crew includes Kele, a farmer whose character is based on real-life farmers who took part in voyages. Loto, an engineer who proves to be Moana’s right-hand woman. Finally, Moni, the inspirational storyteller and a Maui superfan, rounds out the group. Each one of them proves to be an essential part of Moana’s adventure.

The footage begins with Moana running and parkouring on an unknown island, seemingly being chased. As she clears a a cliff, it is revealed that it is Pua who was running after her. “You wanted to come this time,” said Moana to Pua, eluding to how the adorable pot-belly pig missed out on the action in the previous film. As Moana approaches the peak of the mountain, she blows into a shell to alert her presence – and listens for a call back – but no one answers. The island is uninhabited. As Moana and Pua begin to make their way off the peak, they take a tumble where Moana discovers a piece of broken pottery with a motif depicting people next to a mountain – a sign that people once lived on this island.

Sailing home with her new discovery, Moana breaks into a song about how she’s “Back Where We’re Meant To Be.” The music continues as she sails onto her home island. It is also used as an instrument to introduce the audience to Kele, Loto, and Moni. Breaking through the crowd, Moana’s little sister Simea runs to welcome back her sister. Later, Moana and Simea visit the ancestors’ cave, sharing a sweet moment much like the one shared between Moana and Grandma Tala.

In the next scene, Maui mentions that the powerful Storm God Nalo has started something, as he is seen standing in front of a large portal. We’re introduced to the mysterious Matangi, who works for Nalo. She’s not seen quite clearly in the footage as she’s shrouded in darkness and bats.

Back on the island, the village is in celebration mode as Moana is about to receive the title of Chief. Before the ceremony can finish, lightning strikes through the roof, launching Moana into the side of the hut. She received a vision about a “fire in the sky” that would guide her to the mysterious island depicted on the pottery she had discovered earlier – Motufetu. The island has the power to connect all the people of the sea, but Moana must break the curse placed by Nalo, who wanted to separate the people to weaken the sea.

A comet appears in the sky, one that Moana must follow to find Motufetu. The song “What Lies Beyond” begins as Moana prepares for her journey. It also conveys the sadness she feels about leaving her family and little sister behind. You can catch a glimpse of Grandma Tala in this song as well. Moana explains her mission to her village and chooses her crew – Kele the farmer, Loto the engineer, and Moni the storyteller. Before she sets sail, she shares an emotional moment with Simea, who gives Moana a tiny starfish to keep inside her necklace “so you can take a piece from home.”

Moana debuts a brand new outfit for her journey as the village sends her off with a chant.

The story returns to Maui, who has been caught and bound by a new and mysterious villain. Without his hook, he’s unable to use his powers and pleads with a group of sucker fish to retrieve his hook, to no avail. Mini tattoo Maui gestures that they should call Moana for help.

Finishing off the footage presentation, we see Moana and her crew encounter the fearsome Kakamora, and later on, a giant sea monster as big as an island, with multiple rows of teeth and eyes.

Aside from Moana and Maui, other fan favorites like Hei Hei and Pua are returning for the sequel, as well as Moana’s parents, Chief Tui and Sina. The small yet fierce coconut-like pirates Kakamora will also return.

Director Jason Hand said the following about working with Cravalho:

“There’s a quality that she alone brings to this character—Auli‘i is a leader, she’s kind, she’s funny —she really cares deeply for this character.”

On the dynamic between Moana and Maui, director David Derrick Jr. said:

“We love these two characters together—they make each other better.”

He went on to explain the growth the Demi-god has since the 2016 film:

“Maui has evolved—he’s grown and changed. But he’s still the same Maui that we love. He sets out to defeat this terrible curse all by himself—which is very Maui of him. But we all know that Maui and Moana will have better luck if they team up. It’ll take Maui’s strength and bravery—he can lasso the sun and lift up an island—along with Moana’s selflessness and empathy to unite the people of the ocean.”

New characters include the aforementioned seafarers Kele, Loto, and Moni, Moana’s little sister Simea, Kotu, the Kakamora warrior, the mysterious Matangi, and the fearsome storm god Nalo.

For the sequel, Disney called upon Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear to create new music for ‘Moana 2’. Barlow and Bear received the Best Musical Theater Album award at the 2022 Grammy’s for their work on ‘The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.’

Producer Yvette Merino said that the writing duo hit the ground running, and by the time they had the meeting, Barlow and Bear were ready with a song:

“We listened to what became our opening song, ‘We’re Back.’ It takes you right back into Moana’s world.”

Three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancino will also be a part of the musical sound of ‘Moana 2’ and Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, who worked on the 2016 movie.

Director Dana Ledoux Miller talked about working closely with Barlow and Bear and how the music will be a tool to convey Moana’s growth and journey:

“I’m like, ‘well, so Moana is growing up and she’s learning that there are consequences to her actions and that the choices she makes actually affect other people.’They’re like, yeah, yeah, we’re living that right now, we got it. So, you know, there’s a shorthand that just comes from their experience in it, but they’re also huge musical fans, and they understood what this needed. With the help of Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i, they’ve really been intentional about making sure the music in this film speaks the language of the music in the first film. It’s very much an immersive experience when you watch that first film. We were intentional about making sure we weren’t reinventing that wheel, but we were expanding on it.”

What Else Did We Learn About Moana 2?

Following the footage presentation, directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller held a press conference with journalists.

During the Q&A, Ledoux Miller talked about ‘Moana 2’ being her first animated film and how much she sees her culture represented on screen:

“I was a huge fan of the first time. I very distinctly remember sitting in the theater. The lights come out, and over the bumper, the first sounds, the first voices are Samoan. I realized in that moment, this film, which ended up becoming one of the biggest Disney properties ever, that that film would forever change the way people saw Pacific Islanders.”

Ledoux Miller was hired to co-write the live-action ‘Moana’ with Jared Bush and was brought onto the sequel to direct alongside Derrick Jr. and Hand.

David Derrick Jr, who is also of Samoan heritage, talked about  his excitement to continue Moana’s story:

“When we were asked to come back and continue her story, I was so thrilled because I believe I felt like Moana when she entered that cavern of the Wayfinder. I have Samoan heritage, I’m very proud of it, but I didn’t understand the depths of it. It was the navigators of the Pacific Ocean who found the last discoverable land on earth. They were able to navigate from, you know, Rapa Nui all the way to Aotearoa, all the way to Hawaii. It’s one-third of the earth. These islands are spread out like tiny jewels across a vast ocean that doesn’t divide. It connects. Going forward with this story, we really wanted to show how far the people of the Pacific would go. So for me, I love celebrating that culture, and I hope everyone sees that and appreciates that.”

The film will also cover personal relationships, such as the one Moana has with her little sister Simea – a name inspired by an ancestor of Derrick’s. This storyline was inspired by the director’s personal life.

“My eldest daughter is 21 years old, and her name is Samea, and she’s 21. We have a little son, and his name is Quentin. He’s seven years old. The two of them are the closest siblings I’ve ever seen. During COVID, he would sleep in her bed; they’d go camping together. They’re kindred spirits. There was a very difficult moment when he realized she was going to college and not coming back home. That this pillar of joy in his life was suddenly not always gonna be there.”

Derrick Jr. also discussed the themes of growing up and taking on responsibility:

“Those moments when you’re forced to grow up in certain ways. We wanted to show a maturity to Moana. We wanted to show that she could be even more invested and connected to her people and to her Island. I love that we gave her a sister to show that connection and show that love.”

'Moana 2' co-director Jason Hand. Photo by Alex Kang/Disney. ©2024 Disney. All Rights Reserved.
‘Moana 2’ co-director Jason Hand. Photo by Alex Kang/Disney. ©2024 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Director Jason Hand said that they aim to stay true to the first film while moving forward to the next chapter.

“There’s something left to be done in her story. I think that was the kernel of this idea, this idea of connection. But through that, her own personal growth, she still has somewhere to grow. She’s still a young person who’s growing up and finding out more about herself. That’s the kind of stuff that energizes the story, but it also energizes the storytelling through the songs because you can sing about things that are personally in your own life. So a song like “Beyond” that you heard earlier is from Moana’s personal journey that’s starting to change. She’s starting to grow. That’s a really powerful place.”

    Ledoux Miller added:

“The first film was about Moana reconnecting to the past and who her people were meant to be. This film is really about Moana looking towards the future.”

  • Where To Watch Director Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’

Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny in 'Civil War.'
(L to R) Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny in ‘Civil War.’ Photo: A24.

A24’s ‘Civil War’ takes a terrifying look at what would happen if the United States became fractured. The film follows a group of journalists who are determined to witness history no matter the cost – with chaos and fright at every corner.

The film is written and directed by Alex Garland, who also helmed ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Annihilation’. Kristen Dunst stars as war photographer Lee Smith, who travels across the nation to take photos of the country. Alongside Dunst are Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Sonoya Mizuno, Jefferson White, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Jesse Plemons.

While the movie seems inspired by the current political climate, it does not tell the story from either the left or the right. Rather, Garland focused on the battles between the citizens of the United States.

    A Film That Sparks Debate

‘Civil War’ presents California and Texas as a united force, which seems an unlikely alliance given how far they are apart politically. However, Garland does not tell the story from either side of the political aisle. The director intends for the film to start conversations and spark debates.

The cast has also spoken on the topic. “The whole movie is open to interpretation,” said Dunst in an interview with Variety. Nick Offerman calls the movie “a brilliant piece of fiction” at the film’s premiere and says that his depiction of the President of the United States isn’t based on current or former presidents, “When you see the movie, it’s so unattached to anything in modern politics, not only in your country but any country.”

The Fall Guy’ is not just a rom-com between a stuntman and a director. It is also a love letter to the stunt community. As a former stunt performer, director David Leitch (‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Atomic Blonde’) paid extra attention to the action sequences and fight scenes in the film, ensuring they’re grand, authentic, and most importantly, highlight the men and women who perform them.

The film is (loosely) based on the 80’s TV show of the same name, starring Lee Majors. In the show, Majors’ Colt Seavers works as a bounty hunter on the side, where his stunt skills come in quite handy in apprehending the wanted. In Leitch’s film, Colt is played by Ryan Gosling, who is tasked to find the missing action star Tom Ryder. All the while he is trying to win back the love of his life – Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt.

Joining Gosling and Blunt are Aaron Taylor-Johnson (‘Bullet Train’), Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’), Winston Duke (‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’), and Stephanie Hsu (‘Joy Ride’).

With former stunt performer David Leitch at the helm of a film about a stuntman, one can expect the movie to showcase some of the most daring stunt sequences. Not only is ‘The Fall Guy’ filled with spectacular action, but it broke the record for most cannon rolls in a film. The record was previously held by ‘Casino Royale,’ where James Bond’s Aston Martin rolled seven times as it swerved off the road.

Performed by stunt driver Logan Holiday, the cannon roll sequence in ‘The Fall Guy’ broke records when it rolled eight and a half times, setting the new record for most cannon rolls performed in a film.

The Boys’ are back, and they’re not pulling any punches. The series returns on Prime Video on June 14 with a 3-episode premiere. Tensions are high as Victoria Neuman inches closer to becoming the Vice President. The Boys’ team morale is fractured as the gang becomes tired of Butcher’s deceits and lies. On top of it all, Homelander now has Becca’s son Ryan under his influence, and Butcher must do whatever it takes to get Ryan away from him.

    Initial Thoughts

The story and its characters continues to wow in season 4, with ‘The Boys’, deeply exploring each character’s past and face the consequences of their past decisions. While the first couple of episodes moved a bit slow, the series does ramps up with shocking reveals in later episodes. This season merges a major storyline from spin-off series ‘Gen V’ into the series, and adds a new threat to both supes and humans alike. It’s easy to see why the series continues to gain so much attention and is renewed for a fifth season.

    ‘The Boys’: Story and Direction

    'The Boys' Season 4.

Just as in previous seasons, each episode is filled with an outrageous amount of gore and shocking reveals. In this season, the story focuses on facing the past, as well as one’s own mortality. For Billy Butcher, the consequences of taking temp V have caught up with him. With merely months to live, Butcher re-examines his past decisions and actions when it comes to how he treated Ryan, who is now under the watchful eye of Homelander. Although rare, it’s not the first time Butcher has had a soft spot for someone in his life. When it comes to Ryan, Butcher feels more of an attachment because he’s the last connection Butcher has to his late wife, Becca, and his actions feel more genuine rather than self-serving.

Butcher isn’t the only one facing mortality. This season also sees Homelander confronting the issue from the lens of an all-powerful and essentially indestructible superhero. There are moments where you sympathize with what Homelander is feeling and how lonely he actually is in all of this, though those moments are brief as he goes right back to doing the next terrible thing.

    'The Boys' Season 4.

Erin Moriarty’s Starlight takes ownership of her own identity this season, leaving behind her super suit and superhero name. Now going by her real name, Annie January is hard at work to expose Vought but crumbles under pressure when something from her past is brought to light. This season has been the best development for Annie and perhaps the most vulnerable we’ve seen her yet.

Aside from exploring mortality and characters’ pasts, this season introduces a couple of new members of The Seven: Firecracker (Valorie Curry) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward), who are not afraid to make waves within The Seven.

There is a lot going on in this season, but it doesn’t ever feel convoluted. Every character gets their fair share of screen time, fully explored, and there are still plenty of action and carnage that we all know and love.

Merging the World of ‘The Boys’ and ‘Gen V’

    'The Boys' Season 4.

‘The Boys’ spin-off series ‘Gen V’ premiered in September of 2023, fleshing out and expanding the world of ‘The Boys’. Aside from the up-and-coming superhero hopefuls, ‘Gen V’ delves further into Vought’s history and introduces a dangerous virus that can kill the supes. With cameos from a couple of notable characters of ‘The Boys,’ it makes sense that in this season, we see some ‘Gen V’ characters make their own crossover appearances.

As seen in this season’s trailer, Sam and Cate make a cameo, connecting the storyline from ‘Gen V’ to ‘The Boys’. However, this does not mean viewers need to binge the spin-off series (though they should). What has been great about both series is that they explain the backstory without the need for an exposition scene or narrative, and usually, it’s concise and to the point.

This season is filled with the most character growth and arcs yet, which is wild to say because the show has always done a great job exploring and developing its characters. Despite a slightly slow start, the series ramps up and gets more intense with each episode.

Although the focus is on Victoria Neuman’s potential rise to presidency, the series continues to explore and flesh out its characters. This season focuses on certain characters’ mortality, and it’s been interesting to see how each character reacts.

The series continues to surprise and awe. Whether it’s plot twists, carnage, or suped-up farm animals, it keeps its viewers on their toes.

‘The Boys’ season 4 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

What Is The Plot Of ‘The Boys’?

In Season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander (Antony Starr), who is consolidating his power. Butcher (Karl Urban), with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.

‘Inside Out 2’ is a solid sequel to ‘Inside Out,’ with director Kelsey Mann and the Pixar animation team taking great care to ensure the new movie matched the aesthetic and look of the 2015 film. The exploration of one’s teenage years and how much self-doubt and awkwardness can affect every decision at that age is very relatable. Get ready for a ton of puns, huge laughs, and a very heartfelt message about growing up.

The movie kicks off with Riley’s hockey game, and the original emotions are re-introduced via a sports announcer segment with Joy giving the play-by-play. This also serves as a reminder of what each emotion was in charge of: Anger for when Riley needs to be more aggressive on the ice; Fear when Riley needs to protect herself; Disgust to prevent her from putting the wrong mouthguard in; Sadness when Riley was put in the penalty box; Joy when Riley scores a goal.

This movie introduced Riley’s “Sense of Self,” which is a collection of positive memories that are placed in a pool. Once a new memory is placed, a glowing string reaches up towards the ceiling, which is connected to Headquarters, forming a beautiful blossom of shapes and lights.

After winning her game, high school hockey coach Roberts (Yvette Nicole Brown) approaches Riley and her best friends, Grace and Bree, to invite them to a 3-day skill camp at the high school. The girls, elated by the news, go home to prepare for their trip. That night, the emotions awake to a strange beeping sound coming from the Console. A new button has appeared – “Puberty”. As the puberty alarm grows louder, Joy plucks the button off the Console and uses the chute to throw it into Riley’s back of mind.

Immediately following the puberty button incident, a wrecking ball comes crashing through Headquarters, followed by Mind Workers to start the demolition. Amidst the chaos, a new console was placed, and this prompted the arrival of the new emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Enuui, and Embarrassment. Joy and Anxiety quickly realize they have very different ideas on how to operate the console and how to take Riley through each situation. With Riley arriving at camp, Anxiety decides they must create a new Riley in order for her to better fit in and be accepted amongst the high school hockey players. Trapping the original emotions in a jar, Anxiety sends them to the vault. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust now must find their way back to Headquarters before Anxiety undo the Riley they know and love.

The film explores not only the self-doubt and self-consciousness of a teenager but also all the things that come with puberty, like body odor and mood swings. While these moments play as comedic, there’s also a sense of relatability, as the audiences will have gone through or will be going through that stage in life.

Anxiety is the perfect emotion to introduce in the sequel – almost every decision being made is carefully crafted by her to prevent awkward social situations and, ultimately, how to best plan for the future. The teams of emotions are split into two, where the original emotions are navigating through Riley’s mind in order to get back to Headquarters, and the new emotions are working hard to steer Riley through hockey camp.

‘Inside Out 2’ nails the life stages of social awkwardness and the idea of needing to fit in, all the while keeping the heartwarming aspect of a Pixar film.

Teenage years can be that awkward stage where you don’t admit you still like a certain type of music or TV show anymore because it’s deemed “uncool” or “childish.” This film showcases how many emotions we go through during this period as a teen, but also through the lens of parents. When Riley goes through her mood swing before leaving for hockey camp, we get an inside look at her mom’s Headquarters, and the reactions of the emotions are hilarious.

It also touches on making new friends and maintaining relationships with old friends as we grow – what causes us to grow apart and what we are willing to do to fit in with a new friend group.

The voice cast, old and new, is excellent in the movie, but Maya Hawke’s Anxiety is the standout. She nails Anxiety’s persona with her fast-talking ability, never needing to take a second to breathe. Hawke’s performance isn’t just Anxiety-driven speed talk. Her character goes through flashes of self-doubt as well, where she begins to crack under the pressure of making sure Riley is presenting her best self, all the while “planning for the future.” Her emotional delivery later in the film proves that Anxiety isn’t just a fast-talking, caffeine-drinking character but can be multi-dimensional.

    Final Thoughts

‘Inside Out 2’ is a solid sequel to ‘Inside Out,’ and stands strong on its own without audiences needing to rewatch the first. It feels more mature, which is natural given Riley’s age in the film. The movie does a great job of setting up the new characters, but with it mostly focusing on Joy and Anxiety’s journey, it makes the other emotions feel like supporting characters at times. In good old Pixar fashion, there are plenty of moments that’ll tug at your heartstrings, but none that hits as hard as that “Bing-Bong” moment. Still, the story and growth of all the characters are incredibly relatable, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.
