  • ‘The Deuce’ Season 3 Trailer Ushers in the End of a Porn Era

‘The Deuce’ Season 3 Trailer Ushers in the End of a Porn Era

    HBO

    Video birthed the porn star.

HBO released the official trailer for the third and final season of “The Deuce,” which sees the porn industry experiencing a revolution in 1985 as VHS overtakes film as the primary medium for production and distribution.

The Martino brothers (both played by James Franco) are hoping to take full, financial advantage, as is budding porn mogul Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

And video isn’t the only thing changing the industry — New York City’s takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era.

With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before.

“The Deuce” is concluding at the end of this season, which has always been the plan, as Franco told Collider in 2017.

“It gives it this perfectly encapsulated, very concise, economical power punch feeling to it,” he noted. “From the beginning, the plan was to cover 14 years … The third season will be ’84-’85 when everything imploded and the old 42nd Street was shut down by Mayor [Ed] Koch.”

“The Deuce” Season 3 premieres Monday, September 9 on HBO.

  • HBO’s ‘His Dark Materials’ Adds Voice Cast Members as Daemons

HBO’s ‘His Dark Materials’ Adds Voice Cast Members as Daemons

    HBO

“His Dark Materials” has set the voice cast for HBO and BBC’s upcoming big-budget adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy novels.

The story takes place in an alternate universe where human souls take the form of animal companions called daemons. The bond between the two is sacred.

Season 1 follows Lyra (Dafne Keen) and her daemon Pantalaimon, who live at Jordan College in Oxford until she gets caught up in a nefarious plot to steal children and the mystery of a phenomenon called Dust.

Kit Connor (young Elton John in “Rocketman”) will voice Pantalaimon aka Pan.

American comedian Cristela Alonzo is voicing aeronaut Lee Scoresby’s (Lin-Manuel Miranda) arctic hare daemon Hester, while “Poirot” star David Suchet takes on the identity of Kaisa, the gyrfalcon daemon to the witch Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas).

And Joe Tandberg (“The Innocents”) will voice the famous armored bear Byrnison, who is both a skilled metal worker and a fierce warrior.

Helen McCrory (“Peaky Blinders”) was previously announced as the voice of Stelmaria, the snow leopard daemon of Lord Asriel, Lyra’s uncle (James McAvoy).

Meanwhile, Ruth Wilson‘s mysterious and dangerous Mrs. Coulter has a golden monkey daemon that doesn’t speak or have a name. Brian Fisher, a puppeteer from “Detective Pikachu,” will provide the animal noises and vocal characteristics. Fisher also serves as the lead puppeteer and CFX coordinator on “His Dark Materials.”

    Outlander season 4
    Starz

The “Droughtlander” is coming to an end.

Starz announced that Season 5 of “Outlander” will premiere Sunday, February 16. That will make it over a year since the Season 4 finale aired this past January.

The time-traveling romantic drama will also hold a panel presentation at this year’s New York Comic-Con on Saturday, October 5. Stars Caitriona Balfe (Claire) and Sam Heughan (Jamie) are confirmed to attend, along with Duncan LaCroix (Murtagh), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jocasta), and David Berry (Lord John Grey). • New ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Trailer Introduces the World After Judgment Day

New ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Trailer Introduces the World After Judgment Day

    Terminator: Dark Fate teaser poster
    Paramount Pictures

“August 29, 1997 was supposed to be Judgment Day. But I changed the future,” declares Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) in the new trailer for “Terminator: Dark Fate”

That doesn’t impress Mackenzie Davis‘ human-cyborg hybrid. “You may have changed the future, but you didn’t change our fate.” Seems like Skynet will still bring about an apocalypse — unless Sarah and her new ally, with the help of T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) do something about it.

The ass-kicking trio team up to save a young woman (Natalia Reyes), who bears some kind of importance to humankind’s survival, from a dangerous new terminator (Gabriel Luna).

The new trailer features the blend of jaw-dropping action, snappy dialogue, and grim grittiness that made the original “Terminator” and “T2” movies so iconic.

“Terminator: Dark Fate” opens in theaters November 1.

  • ‘The Two Popes’ Trailer: Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce Face Off Over Future of Catholic Church

‘The Two Popes’ Trailer: Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce Face Off Over Future of Catholic Church

    Netflix

“Two Popes” aren’t better than one, as the trailer for the upcoming Netflix film from Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”) proves.

The movie is based the real-life tumultuous transition from traditionalist Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) to his more open-minded successor, Cardinal Bergoglio, later known as Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce).

The movie follows the cardinal after he requests permission to retire in 2012 from the pope. Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church.

Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

“We are no longer part of this world,” Bergoglio declares, while Benedict muses on being able to see the “correction” following his tenure as pope.

“The Two Popes” will have its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this weekend. It will open in select theaters on November 27, then begin streaming on Netflix on December 20.

  • Blumhouse’s ‘The Invisible Man’ Remake Will Center on Abusive Relationship

Blumhouse’s ‘The Invisible Man’ Remake Will Center on Abusive Relationship

    Hulu

What you can’t see can, in fact, hurt you. That’s the official premise of the upcoming “Invisible Man” remake from Blumhouse Productions.

Universal and Blumhouse are reimagining the classic tale by H.G. Wells, which has inspired numerous film and television adaptations, including the 1933 black-and-white movie starring Claude Rains.

Not much was known about the project, other than that it is coming from director Leigh Whannell and stars Elisabeth Moss, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Storm Reid, Aldis Hodge, and Harriet Dyer.

Now, an official description reveals more details about the plot:

“Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Dyer), their childhood friend (Hodge) and his teenage daughter (Reid).

But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Jackson-Cohen) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.”

It seems like the movie wants to tap into topics of the current time, like toxic masculinity and the #MeToo movement. Addressing pressing issues of the day, within the horror genre, is something Blumhouse has done well before (see: “Get Out,” “Us”).

“The Invisible Man” opens in theaters February 28, 2020.
