  • Netflix’s ‘The I-Land’ Trailer Is ‘Lost’ Meets ‘Cabin in the Woods’

Netflix’s ‘The I-Land’ Trailer Is ‘Lost’ Meets ‘Cabin in the Woods’

    Netflix

The age old “nature vs. nurture” debate gets a few new twists in “The I-Land,” a Netflix series that draws inspiration from several other pop culture properties to form its own mysterious concoction.

A trailer parodying the much-maligned Fyre Festival introduces viewers to the titular locale, a seemingly-idyllic tropical destination that’s touted as “an immersive experience so exclusive, captivating, and breathtaking, once you arrive, you’ll never leave.”

It soon becomes clear that The I-Land is no paradise, and the 10 people who find themselves stranded there have no memory of how they arrived — or even who they are.

The show’s official synopsis warns of the ominous fate that awaits them:

“Faced with the I-Land’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves — or die as their worst ones.”

The clip offers a taste of the horrors to come (one shrieking woman has seemingly lost her hand in a gruesome accident), but ends with an even more twisted revelation: All of this is being monitored — and seemingly manipulated — by someone else. It’s like if “Lost” and “Cabin in the Woods” had a baby.

“The I-Land” stars Natalie Martinez (“Under the Dome”), Kate Bosworth (“Superman Returns”), Michelle Veintimilla (“Gotham”), Alex Pettyfer (“Magic Mike”), Sibylla Deen (“The Last Ship”), Kyle Schmid (“Being Human”), Ronald Peet (“Defectives”), Kota Eberhardt (“Dark Phoenix”), Anthony Lee Medina (“Flesh and Bone”), and Gilles Geary (“Spirit Warriors”). It washes up on Netflix on September 12.

  • Marvel Is Reportedly Done Making ‘Spider-Man’ Movies After Sony Money Dispute

Marvel Is Reportedly Done Making ‘Spider-Man’ Movies After Sony Money Dispute

    Sony Pictures

Marvel Studios and “Spider-Man” are once again parting ways.

A new report from Deadline says that the partnership between Disney and Sony that finally united the webslinger with the Avengers — paving the way for hits including “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” — is effectively over, following a dispute over money. According to the trade, Disney was attempting to broker a new deal with Sony that would see both studios put up a 50-50 financial stake in future “Spider-Man” flicks (and essentially earn 50-50 in profits), rather than the reported 5 percent of first-dollar grosses it currently earns.

But Deadline says Sony scoffed at that idea, and after Disney declined to keep the current terms of the partnership, the studios decided to part ways entirely. Now, Marvel Studios — and its chief and super producer, Kevin Feige — will no longer be involved in the “Spider-Man” franchise going forward, though star Tom Holland and director Jon Watts are still attached to two more movies featuring the hero.

Deadline speculates that Sony simply didn’t want to share such a large piece of its most profitable franchise with Disney, and the studio does already have plans in place for a “Venom” sequel and several other spin-offs in the Spidey-verse. Just how successful those will be without the golden touch of Marvel Studios and Feige remains to be seen.

  • HBO Renews ‘Succession’ for Season 3

HBO Renews ‘Succession’ for Season 3

    HBO

It didn’t take long for HBO realize it had a hit on its hands, with the premium cable outlet renewing family drama “Succession” for a third season only two episodes into its second.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has built an impressive audience of loyal viewers, averaging 4.3 million viewers per episode across all platforms in season one, which premiered in 2018. Season two, which debuted on August 11, has already notched more than 1 million viewers each for its first two installments — and counting.

In a statement announcing the renewal, Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO drama programming, specifically cited the show’s ability to connect with viewers as a key to its, uh, success.

“We are elated that ‘Succession’ and its exploration of wealth, power and family has resonated so powerfully with audiences,” Orsi’s statement said. “We cannot wait to see how the complex characters that Jesse Armstrong has created continue to navigate this captivating, ruthless world of the uber-rich. In today’s world where the intersection of politics and media is increasingly prevalent, ‘Succession’ presents an especially piercing look behind the curtain of this elite, influential, and cutthroat community.”

“Succession” follows the wealthy Roy family (a not-so-thinly-veiled fictional version of the Murdochs), whose dysfunctional members are vying to take control of its vast media empire. Brian Cox stars as family patriarch Logan Roy, and the series also features Jeremy Strong, Hiam Abbass, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, and J. Smith-Cameron.

Season two is currently airing on HBO on Sundays, and will run for 10 episodes. Season three is expected to debut sometime in 2020.

  • James Gunn’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Adds ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Star Flula Borg

    Universal

The squad keeps expanding: James Gunn‘s upcoming “Suicide Squad” flick has added another cast member.

Deadline has the scoop that Flula Borg is the latest star to join the ever-growing ensemble of the DC villains feature. Borg — a German actor, DJ, YouTube star, and comedian who is best known to U.S. audiences for his part as one the Bellas’ international a cappella rivals in “Pitch Perfect 2” — will reportedly be playing a love interest to one of the film’s characters, though Deadline says that not much else is known about the role at this time.

Borg’s comedic sensibilities mesh well with Gunn’s offbeat aesthetic, which Gunn showcased in his breakout film, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” DC is undoubtedly hoping that the filmmaker’s signature wit and quirk can breathe new life into “The Suicide Squad,” which faltered with fans and critics alike on its first attempt at a film in 2016.

With the cast so far, it looks like Gunn is doing just that. In addition to Borg, other newcomers to the franchise include Idris Elba (reportedly playing a new villain), “A Wrinkle in Time” star Storm Reid (playing Elba’s character’s daughter), “Ant-Man” star David Dastmalchian (playing Polka-Dot Man), Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Dave Bautista (rumored to be playing Peacemaker), newcomer Daniela Melchior (playing Ratcatcher), and John Cena. Returning stars from the original include  Margot RobbieJai CourtneyJoel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis.

“The Suicide Squad” is due to storm theaters on August 6, 2021.

  • HBO Max Lands Steven Soderbergh Comedy Starring Meryl Streep, Gemma Chan

HBO Max Lands Steven Soderbergh Comedy Starring Meryl Streep, Gemma Chan

    Universal Pictures

HBO Max is having a busy Monday: After announcing its first slate of original TV pilots, the new streaming service has revealed its first film acquisition — and it’s a pretty huge get for the fledgling outlet.

According to word from The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max will be the home of a new comedy feature from Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, with some A-list talent attached. The film, using the working title “Let Them All Talk,” features Oscar winner and acting legend Meryl Streep as the headliner, alongside Gemma Chan (“Captain Marvel,” “Crazy Rich Asians”); other co-stars include Dianne Wiest, Candice Bergen, and Lucas Hedges.

The film is the project that Soderbergh has been hinting at on social media, and it sounds awesome. Here’s the scoop on the film’s plot, per THR:

MacArthur Fellow and PEN/Faulkner award-winning author Deborah Eisenberg wrote the script that centers on a celebrated author (Streep) who takes a journey on a cruise ship with some old friends (Bergen, Wiest) to have some fun and heal old wounds. Her nephew (Hedges) comes along to wrangle the ladies and finds himself involved with a young literary agent (Chan).

THR reports that production already began last week in New York City. Other shooting sites include the Queen Mary II and the U.K.

In a statement, Sarah Aubrey, head of HBO Max original content, told THR that “Let Them All Talk” was “the kind of project where you just say, ‘Yes please, sign me up.’” Sounds about right to us.

“To work with Steven Soderbergh and this all-star cast led by Meryl Streep is thrilling and sets the standard for features at HBO Max,” Aubrey’s statement added.

This project will certainly leave some seriously large shoes to fill. But it sounds like HBO Max is more than up to the task of courting some heavy-hitters.

  • Chris Pine to Play John Dean, Nixon Lawyer Turned Watergate Whistleblower

Chris Pine to Play John Dean, Nixon Lawyer Turned Watergate Whistleblower

    Warner Bros.

A pivotal figure of the Watergate scandal is getting the big screen treatment, with Chris Pine set to play lawyer-turned-whistleblower John Dean in a new feature.

Variety has the scoop on the project, which chronicles the political exploits of Dean, who served as White House Council under President Richard Nixon from July 1970 through August 1973 — right at the heart of the scandal that imploded Nixon’s presidency. The film is set up at Amazon Studios, and Dean himself will serve as an executive producer on the feature.

According to Variety, Dean was known as the “connoisseur of cover-ups,” and  “became a crucial Nixon whistle-blower by offering testimony that implicated the president in the historic cover-up” of the break-in at the Democratic committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel, during Nixon’s 1972 re-election campaign. In exchange, Dean pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, and received a sentence of four months of house arrest. He remains in the public eye today as an author of numerous books and a political commentator, and has been outspoken against the Republican Party and the current administration.

The script for the film — currently untitled — is being penned by Evan Parter, who Variety notes is an “Up-and-coming screenwriter … whose scripts have appeared more than once on the annual Black List.” Amazon scooped up the flick after hearing only the pitch, so expect production to take some time as the film comes together.

  • ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Renewed for Season 12, ‘All Stars’ Renewed for Season 5

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Renewed for Season 12, ‘All Stars’ Renewed for Season 5

    VH1

RuPaul will be back to sashay another day: Both “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars” have each been renewed for an additional season on VH1.

The Emmy-winning host announced the fabulous news in a video message on Monday, revealing that “Drag Race” would be back for a 12th season, and “All Stars” would werk it for a fifth outing.

There’s no word yet on a lineup for either show’s next installment, or an exact premiere date, though Ru promised that both are “coming soon” to VH1.

After more than a decade on the air, “Drag Race” continues to be one of the most bankable reality competition series on the air, delighting fans and critics alike — and winning over even more devotees — year after year. Last month, the show pulled in a whopping 14 Emmy nods for season 11, snatching the title of VH1’s most-nominated series in a single year ever.

“Drag Race” is the reigning champion in both the Reality Competition Series and Reality or Competition Series Host categories at this year’s ceremony, and both the show and RuPaul are nominated again this year. RuPaul has the biggest lock on a repeat, having taken home the trophy three consecutive times since 2016.

  • HBO Max Orders Pilots for ‘Practical Magic’ Prequel Series, More Originals

HBO Max Orders Pilots for ‘Practical Magic’ Prequel Series, More Originals

    Warner Bros.

New streaming service HBO Max is wasting no time in shoring up its offerings of original content, ordering three new pilots for an eclectic slate of projects.

The buzziest among them is “The Rules of Magic,” a prequel to the 1998 film “Practical Magic,” which starred Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as sisters who embrace their family’s knack for witchcraft, with the guidance of their aunts (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest). The series will be based on author Alice Hoffman’s novels “Rules of Magic” and “Practical Magic,” and be shepherded by Melissa Rosenberg (Netflix’s “Jessica Jones”) and Dana Baratta.

Here’s the official logline, per Deadline:

In this epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City, three troubled siblings — Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens — wrestle with “abnormalities” that have kept them isolated. But the tumultuous times unearth the extraordinary discovery that they are, in fact, descendants of a bloodline of witches. In their aspirational journey towards self-discovery and self-acceptance, they’ll contend with grief, war, bigotry and dark magic, not to mention a centuries-old curse designed to keep them away from love. The two sisters, Franny and Jet, will become the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in ‘Practical Magic,’ while their beloved brother, Vincent, will leave an unexpected legacy.

The next series, “Generation,” is a half-hour dramedy created by Zelda Barnz, the 17-year-old daughter of writer-director Daniel Barnz (“Beastly,” “Cake“) and producer Ben Barnz (“Cake”). Lena Dunham will co-produce along with Zelda, Daniel, and Ben.

Deadline reports that the idea for the series “reportedly grew out of Zelda’s desire to see herself honestly (not sensationally) represented and to give herself and her peers an authentic voice.”

    The show’s logline states:

A dark yet playful half-hour, GENERATION follows a group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.

And finally, the one-hour YA drama “Red Bird Lane” will also get a pilot. The show is described as a “Morality and psychological horror series about eight strangers who arrive at an isolated house—all for different reasons—and quickly realize that something sinister and terrifying awaits them.”

Sara Gran (“Southland”) will serve as writer and showrunner. John Wells (“ER,” “The West Wing,” “Southland”) will also co-executive produce.

  • ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Gets Season 3 Trailer, Premiere Date

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Gets Season 3 Trailer, Premiere Date

    Amazon Prime

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is finally set to make its triumphant return to the spotlight, with the Emmy-winning Amazon Prime series announcing a premiere date for its third season.

The show will be back just in time for the holiday season, with season three set to debut on December 6. “Mrs. Maisel” also dropped a new season three trailer, packed with the show’s signature witty banter (thanks, Amy Sherman-Palladino) and a brief glimpse of new guest star Sterling K. Brown.

Details about Brown’s character haven’t been revealed yet, and his appearance in the clip doesn’t give much away, either, though his presence alone is enough to get us excited. We see him approach Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her manager, Susie (Alex Borstein), on an airplane, wishing them “happy flying,” though Susie — mid-gulp of an adult beverage — doesn’t look particularly pleased.

Season three of the series follows Midge as she sets out on a stand-up tour of the U.S. and Europe, serving as the opening act for crooner Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain). Part of the season was shot in Miami, and the locale’s sun-kissed color palette lends an additional air of whimsy to the trailer. Looks like fans of “Mrs. Maisel” should be plenty happy with these new episodes.

  • ‘Coming 2 America’ Adds Original Star Vanessa Bell Calloway

‘Coming 2 America’ Adds Original Star Vanessa Bell Calloway

    Paramount Pictures

The list of returning “Coming to America” cast members set to reprise their roles in the long-awaited sequel continues to grow, with another star joining the ensemble.

Vanessa Bell Calloway will appear in “Coming 2 America,” Variety reports. She had a small role in the first film as Princess Imani Izzi, the woman hand-picked by Prince Akeem’s father for an arranged marriage. Of course, things don’t work out between the would-be couple, after the prince decides to head to the U.S. to look for true love instead.

Original star Eddie Murphy will be back as Prince Akeem, and additional fellow returning cast members include Arsenio HallJames Earl Jones, Paul Bates, John Amos, and Shari Headley. New cast members include Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, and Kiki Layne.

It’s unclear how significant Bell Calloway’s part will be in the follow-up, though her brief screen time in the original remains memorable, thanks to the princess’s striking gold dress. The look has inspired plenty of fashionistas over the years, and has been emulated by the likes of “Black Panther” star Danai Gurira.

“Coming 2 America” is due to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
