6. ‘Safety Last’ (1929)

Silent comic Harold Lloyd was famous for doing his own stunts, which is probably how he came up with the title for this movie, in which his character has to climb up the side of a high-rise Los Angeles department store. In the famous close-ups of Lloyd hanging off the face of a clock at the rooftop — one of the most iconic sequences in screen history — that’s really the star himself. He had a mattress on a platform positioned a few feet below the camera frame, but otherwise, there’s no wires –just Lloyd.
