9. ‘Back to the Future Part II’ (1989)

Zemeckis’ ultimate puzzle box movie plays like the first movie as rewritten by Jorge Luis Borges. Whether Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) visit the future (a presciently imagined 2015) or the past, they’re condemned to relive the same sequence of events over and over. It’s technically dazzling but dizzying to watch. And the movie suffers a little from being a transitional middle-of-a-trilogy film, without a satisfying beginning or ending.
